Project description:We develop a novel exploratory tool for non-Euclidean object data based on data depth, extending celebrated Tukey's depth for Euclidean data. The proposed metric halfspace depth, applicable to data objects in a general metric space, assigns to data points depth values that characterize the centrality of these points with respect to the distribution and provides an interpretable center-outward ranking. Desirable theoretical properties that generalize standard depth properties postulated for Euclidean data are established for the metric halfspace depth. The depth median, defined as the deepest point, is shown to have high robustness as a location descriptor both in theory and in simulation. We propose an efficient algorithm to approximate the metric halfspace depth and illustrate its ability to adapt to the intrinsic data geometry. The metric halfspace depth was applied to an Alzheimer's disease study, revealing group differences in the brain connectivity, modeled as covariance matrices, for subjects in different stages of dementia. Based on phylogenetic trees of 7 pathogenic parasites, our proposed metric halfspace depth was also used to construct a meaningful consensus estimate of the evolutionary history and to identify potential outlier trees.

Project description:An important function of the visual system is to represent 3D scene structure from a sequence of 2D images projected onto the retinae. During observer translation, the relative image motion of stationary objects at different distances (motion parallax) provides potent depth information. However, if an object moves relative to the scene, this complicates the computation of depth from motion parallax since there will be an additional component of image motion related to scene-relative object motion. To correctly compute depth from motion parallax, only the component of image motion caused by self-motion should be used by the brain. Previous experimental and theoretical work on perception of depth from motion parallax has assumed that objects are stationary in the world. Thus, it is unknown whether perceived depth based on motion parallax is biased by object motion relative to the scene. Naïve human subjects viewed a virtual 3D scene consisting of a ground plane and stationary background objects, while lateral self-motion was simulated by optic flow. A target object could be either stationary or moving laterally at different velocities, and subjects were asked to judge the depth of the object relative to the plane of fixation. Subjects showed a far bias when object and observer moved in the same direction, and a near bias when object and observer moved in opposite directions. This pattern of biases is expected if subjects confound image motion due to self-motion with that due to scene-relative object motion. These biases were large when the object was viewed monocularly, and were greatly reduced, but not eliminated, when binocular disparity cues were provided. Our findings establish that scene-relative object motion can confound perceptual judgements of depth during self-motion.

Project description:Moving object segmentation is the most fundamental task for many vision-based applications. In the past decade, it has been performed on the stationary camera, or moving camera, respectively. In this paper, we show that the moving object segmentation can be addressed in a unified framework for both type of cameras. The proposed method consists of two stages: (1) In the first stage, a novel multi-frame homography model is generated to describe the background motion. Then, the inliers and outliers of that model are classified as background trajectories and moving object trajectories by the designed cumulative acknowledgment strategy. (2) In the second stage, a super-pixel-based Markov Random Fields model is used to refine the spatial accuracy of initial segmentation and obtain final pixel level labeling, which has integrated trajectory classification information, a dynamic appearance model, and spatial temporal cues. The proposed method overcomes the limitations of existing object segmentation algorithms and resolves the difference between stationary and moving cameras. The algorithm is tested on several challenging open datasets. Experiments show that the proposed method presents significant performance improvement over state-of-the-art techniques quantitatively and qualitatively.

Project description:Many real-world searches (e.g., radiology and baggage screening) have rare targets. When targets are rare, observers perform rapid, incomplete searches, leading to higher miss rates. To improve search for rare (10% prevalence) targets, we provided eye movement feedback (EMF) to observers during their searches. Although the nature of the EMF varied across experiments, each method informed observers about the regions of the display that had not yet been inspected. We hypothesized that feedback would help guide attention to unsearched areas and increase the proportion of the display searched before making a target-absent response, thereby increasing accuracy. An eye tracker was used to mark fixated areas by either removing a semiopaque gray overlay (Experiments 1 and 4) as portions of the display were fixated or by adding the overlay once the eye left a segment of the image (Experiments 2 and 4). Experiment 3 provided automated EMF, such that a new region was uncovered every 540 milliseconds. Across experiments, we varied whether people searched for "Waldo" in images from "Where's Waldo?" search books or searched for a T among offset Ls. We found weak evidence that EMF improves accuracy in Experiment 1. However, in the remaining experiments, EMF had no effect (Experiment 4), or even reduced accuracy (Experiments 2 and 3). We conclude that the one positive result we found is likely a Type I error and that the EMF method that we used is unlikely to improve visual search performance.

Project description:Many alternative approaches for 3D object detection using a singular camera have been studied instead of leveraging high-precision 3D LiDAR sensors incurring a prohibitive cost. Recently, we proposed a novel approach for 3D object detection by employing a ground plane model that utilizes geometric constraints named GAC3D to improve the results of the deep-based detector. GAC3D adopts an adaptive depth convolution to replace the traditional 2D convolution to deal with the divergent context of the image's feature, leading to a significant improvement in both training convergence and testing accuracy on the KITTI 3D object detection benchmark. This article presents an alternative architecture named eGAC3D that adopts a revised depth adaptive convolution with variant guidance to improve detection accuracy. Additionally, eGAC3D utilizes the pixel adaptive convolution to leverage the depth map to guide our model for detection heads instead of using an external depth estimator like other methods leading to a significant reduction of time inference. The experimental results on the KITTI benchmark show that our eGAC3D outperforms not only our previous GAC3D but also many existing monocular methods in terms of accuracy and inference time. Moreover, we deployed and optimized the proposed eGAC3D framework on an embedded platform with a low-cost GPU. To the best of the authors' knowledge, we are the first to develop a monocular 3D detection framework on embedded devices. The experimental results on Jetson Xavier NX demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve nearly real-time performance with appropriate accuracy even with the modest hardware resource.

Project description:This paper presents a system for moving object exposure, focusing on pedestrian detection, in external, unfriendly, and heterogeneous environments. The system manipulates and accurately merges information coming from subsequent video frames, making small computational efforts in each single frame. Its main characterizing feature is to combine several well-known movement detection and tracking techniques, and to orchestrate them in a smart way to obtain good results in diversified scenarios. It uses dynamically adjusted thresholds to characterize different regions of interest, and it also adopts techniques to efficiently track movements, and detect and correct false positives. Accuracy and reliability mainly depend on the overall receipt, i.e., on how the software system is designed and implemented, on how the different algorithmic phases communicate information and collaborate with each other, and on how concurrency is organized. The application is specifically designed to work with inexpensive hardware devices, such as off-the-shelf video cameras and small embedded computational units, eventually forming an intelligent urban grid. As a matter of fact, the major contribution of the paper is the presentation of a tool for real-time applications in embedded devices with finite computational (time and memory) resources. We run experimental results on several video sequences (both home-made and publicly available), showing the robustness and accuracy of the overall detection strategy. Comparisons with state-of-the-art strategies show that our application has similar tracking accuracy but much higher frame-per-second rates.

Project description:The task of parceling perceived visual motion into self- and object motion components is critical to safe and accurate visually guided navigation. In this paper, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to determine the cortical areas functionally active in this task and the pattern connectivity among them to investigate the cortical regions of interest and networks that allow subjects to detect object motion separately from induced self-motion. Subjects were presented with nine textured objects during simulated forward self-motion and were asked to identify the target object, which had an additional, independent motion component toward or away from the observer. Cortical activation was distributed among occipital, intra-parietal and fronto-parietal areas. We performed a network analysis of connectivity data derived from partial correlation and multivariate Granger causality analyses among functionally active areas. This revealed four coarsely separated network clusters: bilateral V1 and V2; visually responsive occipito-temporal areas, including bilateral LO, V3A, KO (V3B) and hMT; bilateral VIP, DIPSM and right precuneus; and a cluster of higher, primarily left hemispheric regions, including the central sulcus, post-, pre- and sub-central sulci, pre-central gyrus, and FEF. We suggest that the visually responsive networks are involved in forming the representation of the visual stimulus, while the higher, left hemisphere cluster is involved in mediating the interpretation of the stimulus for action. Our main focus was on the relationships of activations during our task among the visually responsive areas. To determine the properties of the mechanism corresponding to the visual processing networks, we compared subjects' psychophysical performance to a model of object motion detection based solely on relative motion among objects and found that it was inconsistent with observer performance. Our results support the use of scene context (e.g., eccentricity, depth) in the detection of object motion. We suggest that the cortical activation and visually responsive networks provide a potential substrate for this computation.

Project description:The ability to accurately perceive and track moving objects is crucial for many everyday activities. In this study, we use a "double-drift stimulus" to explore the processing of visual motion signals that underlie perception, pursuit, and saccade responses to a moving object. Participants were presented with peripheral moving apertures filled with noise that either drifted orthogonally to the aperture's direction or had no net motion. Participants were asked to saccade to and track these targets with their gaze as soon as they appeared and then to report their direction. In the trials with internal motion, the target disappeared at saccade onset so that the first 100 ms of the postsaccadic pursuit response was driven uniquely by peripheral information gathered before saccade onset. This provided independent measures of perceptual, pursuit, and saccadic responses to the double-drift stimulus on a trial-by-trial basis. Our analysis revealed systematic differences between saccadic responses, on one hand, and perceptual and pursuit responses, on the other. These differences are unlikely to be caused by differences in the processing of motion signals because both saccades and pursuits seem to rely on shared target position and velocity information. We conclude that our results are instead due to a difference in how the processing mechanisms underlying perception, pursuit, and saccades combine motor signals with target position. These findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying dissociation in visual processing between perception and eye movements.

Project description:Many everyday interactions with moving objects benefit from an accurate perception of their movement. Self-motion, however, complicates object motion perception because it generates a global pattern of motion on the observer's retina and radically influences an object's retinal motion. There is strong evidence that the brain compensates by suppressing the retinal motion due to self-motion, however, this requires estimates of depth relative to the object-otherwise the appropriate self-motion component to remove cannot be determined. The underlying neural mechanisms are unknown, but neurons in brain areas MT and MST may contribute given their sensitivity to motion parallax and depth through joint direction, speed, and disparity tuning. We developed a neural model to investigate whether cells in areas MT and MST with well-established neurophysiological properties can account for human object motion judgments during self-motion. We tested the model by comparing simulated object motion signals to human object motion judgments in environments with monocular, binocular, and ambiguous depth. Our simulations show how precise depth information, such as that from binocular disparity, may improve estimates of the retinal motion pattern due the self-motion through increased selectivity among units that respond to the global self-motion pattern. The enhanced self-motion estimates emerged from recurrent feedback connections in MST and allowed the model to better suppress the appropriate direction, speed, and disparity signals from the object's retinal motion, improving the accuracy of the object's movement direction represented by motion signals.

Project description:The prediction of upcoming events is of importance not only to humans and non-human primates but also to other animals that live in complex environments with lurking threats or moving prey. In this study, we examined motion tracking and anticipatory looking in dogs in two eye-tracking experiments. In Experiment 1, we presented pet dogs (N = 14) with a video depicting how two players threw a Frisbee back and forth multiple times. The horizontal movement of the Frisbee explained a substantial amount of variance of the dogs' horizontal eye movements. With increasing duration of the video, the dogs looked at the catcher before the Frisbee arrived. In Experiment 2, we showed the dogs (N = 12) the same video recording. This time, however, we froze and rewound parts of the video to examine how the dogs would react to surprising events (i.e., the Frisbee hovering in midair and reversing its direction). The Frisbee again captured the dogs' attention, particularly when the video was frozen and rewound for the first time. Additionally, the dogs looked faster at the catcher when the video moved forward compared to when it was rewound. We conclude that motion tracking and anticipatory looking paradigms provide promising tools for future cognitive research with canids.
