New-Generation Liquid Crystal Materials for Application in Infrared Region.

ABSTRACT: This study presents 13 new organic compounds with self-assembling behavior, which can be divided into two groups. The first synthesized group includes compounds based on 4'-(trifluoromethoxy)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl-4-(trifluoromethoxy) benzoate core, and the second includes compounds based on 4-((4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)ethynyl)phenyl-4-(trifluoromethoxy) benzoate core. They differ in the number and location of the fluorine atom in the lateral position. Mesomorphic properties, phase transition enthalpies, refractive indices, birefringence, and MWIR (mid-wavelength infrared) spectral properties of the compounds were investigated, and the results were compared with currently used materials. The influence of the length of the core as well as type and position of substituents in the molecular core was analyzed. The lack of aliphatic protons in the molecular structure generated unique infrared properties.

Graphene liquid crystal retarded percolation for new high-k materials.

Project description:Graphene flakes with giant shape anisotropy are extensively used to establish connectedness electrical percolation in various heterogeneous systems. However, the percolation behaviour of graphene flakes has been recently predicted to be far more complicated than generally anticipated on the basis of excluded volume arguments. Here we confirm experimentally that graphene flakes self-assemble into nematic liquid crystals below the onset of percolation. The competition of percolation and liquid crystal transition provides a new route towards high-k materials. Indeed, near-percolated liquid-crystalline graphene-based composites display unprecedented dielectric properties with a dielectric constant improved by 260-fold increase as compared with the polymer matrix, while maintaining the loss tangent as low as 0.4. This performance is shown to depend on the structure of monodomains of graphene liquid-crystalline phases. Insights into how the liquid crystal phase transition interferes with percolation transition and thus alters the dielectric constant are discussed.

New insights into photoactivated volume generation boost surface morphing in liquid crystal coatings.

Project description:Photoactivated generation of disorder in a liquid crystal network produces free volume that leads to the controlled formation of dynamic corrugations at its surface. The liquid crystal order amplifies the deformation of copolymerized azobenzene, which takes place on molecular length scales, to a micrometre-sized macroscopic phenomenon based on changes in density. We postulate a new mechanism in which continuous oscillating dynamics of the trans-to-cis isomerization of the azobenzene overrules the net conversion, which is currently considered as the origin. This is supported by a significant local density decrease when both the trans and cis isomers are triggered simultaneously, either by dual-wavelength excitation or by the addition of a fluorescent agent converting part of the light to the cis-actuating wavelengths. This new insight provides a general guideline to boost free volume generation leading not only to larger macroscopic deformations but also to controllable and faster non-equilibrium dynamics.

Nanoscratching technique for highly oriented liquid crystal materials.

Project description:A simple, fast, and cost-effective technique to obtain highly oriented thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) phases using a simple nanoscratching method is presented. Highly aligned linear nanogrooves are fabricated by scratching substrates such as normal, indium tin oxide (ITO), curved glasses, and ITO-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film using diamond lapping films. To demonstrate the feasibility of the platform, typical thermotropic and lyotropic LC materials in the nematic phase are used to demonstrate the well-aligned domains along with the resulting scratched nanogrooves. The polarised optical microscopy (POM) images show excellent dark and bright states depending on the sample rotation, proving that the LC molecules are well aligned. The electro-optical performance of the twisted nematic (TN) mode LC display fabricated using the nanogrooves is also measured and indicates reliable results compared with that of the conventional device. Indeed, scratch-induced nanogrooves are well generated on the curved substrate and ITO-coated PET film to show versatility of our technique. Our platform can suggest a new nanofabrication way to make various electro-optical devices as well as other patterning applications.

Tunable entangled photon-pair generation in a liquid crystal.

Project description:Liquid crystals, with their ability to self-assemble, strong response to an electric field and integrability into complex systems, are key materials in light-beam manipulation1. The recently discovered ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals2,3 also have considerable second-order optical nonlinearity, making them a potential material for nonlinear optics4,5. Their use as sources of quantum light could considerably extend the boundaries of photonic quantum technologies6. However, spontaneous parametric down-conversion, the basic source of entangled photons7, heralded single photons8 and squeezed light9, has so far not been observed in liquid crystals-or in any liquids or organic materials. Here we implement spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal and demonstrate electric-field tunable broadband generation of entangled photons, with an efficiency comparable to that of the best nonlinear crystals. The emission rate and polarization state of photon pairs is markedly varied by applying a few volts or twisting the molecular orientation along the sample. A liquid-crystal source enables a special type of quasi-phase matching10, which is based on the molecular twist structure and is therefore reconfigurable for the desired spectral and polarization properties of photon pairs. Such sources promise to outperform standard nonlinear optical materials in terms of functionality, brightness and the tunability of the generated quantum state. The concepts developed here can be extended to complex topological structures, macroscopic devices and multi-pixel tunable quantum light sources.

Research of Liquid-Crystal Materials for a High-Performance FFS-TFT Display.

Project description:A novel liquid-crystal compound of more than 99.95% purity with high performance (such as a high clearing point, large dielectric anisotropy, high optical anisotropy, low viscosity, and large elastic constants) was designed and synthesized according to the fringe-field switching thin-film-transistor-liquid-crystal display requirements (FFS-TFT). Then, a mixed liquid-crystal material suitable for an FFS-TFT display was developed by mixing this compound with other reported compounds, developing a product whose quality was that of the highest level of similar foreign products and which fully met the customer's use requirements (BOE), and thus able to completely replace similar imported materials.

Thermoelectric power generation: from new materials to devices.

Project description:Thermoelectric technology offers the opportunity of direct conversion between heat and electricity, and new and exciting materials that can enable this technology to deliver higher efficiencies have been developed in recent years. This mini-review covers the most promising advances in thermoelectric materials as they pertain to their potential in being implemented in devices and modules with an emphasis on thermoelectric power generation. Classified into three groups in terms of their operating temperature, the thermoelectric materials that are most likely to be used in future devices are briefly discussed. We summarize the state-of-the-art thermoelectric modules/devices, among which nanostructured PbTe modules are particularly highlighted. At the end, key issues and the possible strategies that can help thermoelectric power generation technology move forward are considered. Multi-octave supercontinuum generation from mid-infrared filamentation in a bulk crystal.

Project description:In supercontinuum generation, various propagation effects combine to produce a dramatic spectral broadening of intense ultrashort optical pulses. With a host of applications, supercontinuum sources are often required to possess a range of properties such as spectral coverage from the ultraviolet across the visible and into the infrared, shot-to-shot repeatability, high spectral energy density and an absence of complicated pulse splitting. Here we present an all-in-one solution, the first supercontinuum in a bulk homogeneous material extending from 450 nm into the mid-infrared. The spectrum spans 3.3 octaves and carries high spectral energy density (2 pJ nm(-1)-10 nJ nm(-1)), and the generation process has high shot-to-shot reproducibility and preserves the carrier-to-envelope phase. Our method, based on filamentation of femtosecond mid-infrared pulses in the anomalous dispersion regime, allows for compact new supercontinuum sources.

Research Progress in Application of 2D Materials in Liquid-Phase Lubrication System.

Project description:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are ultra-thin crystals with layered structures that have a monolayer and multiple layers of atomic thickness. Due to excellent performance, 2D materials represented by graphene have caused great interest from researchers in various fields, such as nano-electronics, sensors, solar cells, composite materials, and so on. In recent years, when graphite was used for liquid phase lubrication, there have been many disadvantages limiting its lubrication properties, such as stable dispersion, fluidity and so on. Therefore, 2D materials have been used as high-performance liquid-phase lubricant additives, which become a perfect entry point for high-performance nano-lubricants and lubrication applications. This review describes the application of 2D materials as additives in the field of liquid-phase lubrication (such as lubricating oil and water lubrication) in terms of experimental content, lubrication performance, and lubrication mechanism. Finally, the challenges and prospects of 2D materials in the lubrication field were also proposed.

Mid-infrared photothermal heterodyne spectroscopy in a liquid crystal using a quantum cascade laser.

Project description:We report a technique to measure the mid-infrared photothermal response induced by a tunable quantum cascade laser in the neat liquid crystal 4-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB), without any intercalated dye. Heterodyne detection using a Ti:sapphire laser of the response in the solid, smectic, nematic and isotropic liquid crystal phases allows direct detection of a weak mid-infrared normal mode absorption using an inexpensive photodetector. At high pump power in the nematic phase, we observe an interesting peak splitting in the photothermal response. Tunable lasers that can access still stronger modes will facilitate photothermal heterodyne mid-infrared vibrational spectroscopy.

Chiral Luminescent Liquid Crystal with Multi-State-Reversibility: Breakthrough in Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting Materials.

Project description:Creating a security material that carries distinct information in reflective color, fluorescence, and chiroptical property will enhance anti-counterfeiting levels to deter counterfeits ranging from currencies to pharmaceuticals, but is proven extremely challenging. In this work, an advanced anti-counterfeiting material, with three-state of each mode reversibly converted into multi-mode materials including reflective color, fluorescence, and circularly polarized luminescence signal, is constructed by loading photofluorochromic spiropyran (SP) and zinc ion (Zn2+ ) into the chiral liquid crystal. Under UV irradiation, the complexes of SP and Zn2+ will be transformed into merocyanine (MC) and MC-Zn2+ , while the energy transfer occurs from MC-Zn2+ to MC. Upon heating, MC is easy to recover to SP, while the MC-Zn2+ remains unchanged. The MC and MC-Zn2+ can be transformed into the SP and Zn2+ under visible light irradiation. The three states of each mode can reversibly convert. Furthermore, the reflective color or fluorescence of each state shows different intensities under left- and right-handed circular polarized filters, enabling easy distinguishing by naked eyes. The advanced anti-counterfeiting method with multi-state of each mode for multi-mode encryption information output will provide a new concept for designing and fabricating multi-mode anti-counterfeiting materials, improving the security level for practical application.
