Purely Organic Microparticles Showing Ultralong Room Temperature Phosphorescence.

ABSTRACT: Currently, organic phosphorescent particles are heavily used in sensing and imaging. Up to now, most of these particles contain poisonous and/or expensive metal complexes. Environmentally friendly systems are therefore highly desired. A purely amorphous system consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) particles with incorporated N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzidine emitter molecules is presented in this work. Single particles with sizes between 400 and 840 nm show-depending on the environment-bright fluorescence and phosphorescence. The latter is observed when oxygen is not in the proximity of the emitting dye molecules. These particles can scavenge singlet oxygen, which is produced during the photoexcitation process, by incorporating it into the polymer matrix. This renders their use to be unharmful for the surrounding matter with possible application in marking schemes for living bodies.

Ultralong UV/mechano-excited room temperature phosphorescence from purely organic cluster excitons.

Project description:Purely organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has attracted wide attention recently due to its various application potentials. However, ultralong RTP (URTP) with high efficiency is still rarely achieved. Herein, by dissolving 1,8-naphthalic anhydride in certain organic solid hosts, URTP with a lifetime of over 600 ms and overall quantum yield of over 20% is realized. Meanwhile, the URTP can also be achieved by mechanical excitation when the host is mechanoluminescent. Femtosecond transient absorption studies reveal that intersystem crossing of the host is accelerated substantially in the presence of a trace amount of 1,8-naphthalic anhydride. Accordingly, we propose that a cluster exciton spanning the host and guest forms as a transient state before the guest acts as an energy trap for the RTP state. The cluster exciton model proposed here is expected to help expand the varieties of purely organic URTP materials based on an advanced understanding of guest/host combinations.

Mechano-induced persistent room-temperature phosphorescence from purely organic molecules.

Project description:The persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of purely organic materials in the solid state has recently attracted much research interest and found promising, rapid and visual applications by the naked eye, after the removal of the excitation source. However, almost all reported organic persistent RTP processes are induced by using a UV-light irradiation source. In this report, persistent RTP with an emission lifetime as long as 0.15 s which can be induced not only by photoirradiation but also by mechanical action is presented, which merges mechano-induced luminescence and persistent RTP together. It is found that such persistent RTP is produced through intermolecular electronic coupling (IEC) of units with different excited state configurations. Interestingly, there are two different crystals with and without mechano-induced persistent RTP which can be grown from this organic material, as such a new type of mechano-luminescence (ML) is strongly dependent on their intermolecular interactions. Furthermore, the intensity of such mechano-induced persistent RTP can be increased by lowing the temperature as well, similar to that of photo-induced persistent RTP. Notably, these two crystals exhibit a ML enhancement and ML "turn on", respectively, with decreasing temperature. Therefore, such mechano-induced persistent RTP provides an example of new types of organic luminescent materials, which is a missing jigsaw piece of organic luminescence and important for both fundamental research and practical applications of both persistent RTP and ML of organic materials.

Color-tunable ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence from a multicomponent copolymer.

Project description:Functional materials displaying tunable emission and long-lived luminescence have recently emerged as a powerful tool for applications in information encryption, organic electronics and bioelectronics. Herein, we present a design strategy to achieve color-tunable ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence (UOP) in polymers through radical multicomponent cross-linked copolymerization. Our experiments reveal that by changing the excitation wavelength from 254 to 370 nm, these polymers display multicolor luminescence spanning from blue to yellow with a long-lived lifetime of 1.2 s and a maximum phosphorescence quantum yield of 37.5% under ambient conditions. Moreover, we explore the application of these polymers in multilevel information encryption based on the color-tunable UOP property. This strategy paves the way for the development of multicolor bio-labels and smart luminescent materials with long-lived emission at room temperature.

Boosting purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence performance through a host-guest strategy.

Project description:The host-guest doping system has aroused great attention due to its promising advantage in stimulating bright and persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Currently, exploration of the explicit structure-property relationship of bicomponent systems has encountered obstacles. In this work, two sets of heterocyclic isomers showing promising RTP emissions in the solid state were designed and synthesized. By encapsulating these phosphors into a robust phosphorus-containing host, several host-guest cocrystalline systems were further developed, achieving highly efficient RTP performance with a phosphorescence quantum efficiency (ϕ P) of ∼26% and lifetime (τ P) of ∼32 ms. Detailed photophysical characterization and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation were conducted to reveal the structure-property relationships in such bicomponent systems. It was verified that other than restricting the molecular configuration, the host matrix could also dilute the guest to avoid concentration quenching and provide an external heavy atom effect for the population of triplet excitons, thus boosting the RTP performance of the guest.

Controlling ultralong room temperature phosphorescence in organic compounds with sulfur oxidation state.

Project description:Sulfur oxidation state is used to tune organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of symmetric sulfur-bridged carbazole dimers. The sulfide-bridged compound exhibits a factor of 3 enhancement of the phosphorescence efficiency, compared to the sulfoxide and sulfone-bridged analogs, despite sulfone bridges being commonly used in RTP materials. In order to investigate the origin of this enhancement, temperature dependent spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations are used. The RTP lifetimes are similar due to similar crystal packing modes. Computational studies reveal that the lone pairs on the sulfur atom have a profound impact on enhancing intersystem crossing rate through orbital mixing and screening, which we hypothesize is the dominant factor responsible for increasing the phosphorescence efficiency. The ability to tune the electronic state without altering crystal packing modes allows the isolation of these effects. This work provides a new perspective on the design principles of organic phosphorescent materials, going beyond the rules established for conjugated ketone/sulfone-based organic molecules.

Two-photon-excited ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence by dual-channel triplet harvesting.

Project description:Due to inefficient molecular design strategies, two-photon-excited ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence (TPUOP) has not yet been reported in single-component materials. Herein, we present an innovative design method by dual-channel triplet harvesting to obtain the first bright TPUOP molecule with a lifetime of 0.84 s and a quantum efficiency of 16.6%. In compound o-Cz the donor and acceptor units are connected at the ortho position of benzophenone, showing intramolecular space charge transfer. Therefore, the two-photon absorption ability is improved due to the enhanced charge transfer character. Moreover, the small energy gap boosts dual-channel triplet harvesting via ultralong thermally activated delayed fluorescence and H-aggregation phosphorescence, which suppresses the long-lived triplet concentration quenching. Through two-photon absorption, a near-infrared laser (808 nm) is able to trigger the obvious ultralong emission under ambient conditions. This research work provides valuable guidance for designing near-infrared-excited ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence materials.

A Class of Organic Units Featuring Matrix-Controlled Color-Tunable Ultralong Organic Room Temperature Phosphorescence.

Project description:A novel class of organic units (N-1 and N-2) and their derivatives (PNNA-1 and PNNA-2) with excellent property of ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence (UORTP) is reported. In this work, N-1, N-2, and their derivatives function as the guests, while organic powders (PNCz, BBP, DBT) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) serve as the host matrixes. Amazingly, the color of phosphorescence can be tuned in different states or by varying the host matrixes. At 77 K, all molecules show green afterglow in the monomer state but yellow afterglow in the aggregated state because strong intermolecular interactions exist in the self-aggregate and induce a redshift of the afterglow. In particular, PNNA-1 and PNNA-2 demonstrate distinctive photoactivated green UORTP in the PMMA film owing to the generation of their cation radicals. Whereas the PNNA-1@PNCz and PNNA-2@PNCz doping powders give out yellow UORTP, showing matrix-controlled color-tunable UORTP. In PNCz, the cation radicals of PNNA-1 and PNNA-2 can stay stably and form strong intermolecular interactions with PNCz, leading to a redshift of ultralong phosphorescence.

Ultralong room temperature phosphorescence from amorphous organic materials toward confidential information encryption and decryption.

Project description:Ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (URTP) emitted from pure amorphous organic molecules is very rare. Although a few crystalline organic molecules could realize URTP with long lifetimes (>100 ms), practical applications of these crystalline organic phosphors are still challenging because the formation and maintenance of high-quality crystals are very difficult and complicated. Herein, we present a rational design for minimizing the vibrational dissipation of pure amorphous organic molecules to achieve URTP. By using this strategy, a series of URTP films with long lifetimes and high phosphorescent quantum yields (up to 0.75 s and 11.23%, respectively) were obtained from amorphous organic phosphors without visible fluorescence and phosphorescence under ambient conditions. On the basis of the unique features of URTP films, a new green screen printing technology without using any ink was developed toward confidential information encryption and decryption. This work presents a breakthrough strategy in applying amorphous organic materials for URTP.

Ultralong purely organic aqueous phosphorescence supramolecular polymer for targeted tumor cell imaging.

Project description:Purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence has attracted attention for bioimaging but can be quenched in aqueous systems. Here we report a water-soluble ultralong organic room-temperature phosphorescent supramolecular polymer by combining cucurbit[n]uril (CB[7], CB[8]) and hyaluronic acid (HA) as a tumor-targeting ligand conjugated to a 4-(4-bromophenyl)pyridin-1-ium bromide (BrBP) phosphor. The result shows that CB[7] mediated pseudorotaxane polymer CB[7]/HA-BrBP changes from small spherical aggregates to a linear array, whereas complexation with CB[8] results in biaxial pseudorotaxane polymer CB[8]/HA-BrBP which transforms to relatively large aggregates. Owing to the more stable 1:2 inclusion complex between CB[8] and BrBP and the multiple hydrogen bonds, this supramolecular polymer has ultralong purely organic RTP lifetime in water up to 4.33 ms with a quantum yield of 7.58%. Benefiting from the targeting property of HA, this supramolecular polymer is successfully applied for cancer cell targeted phosphorescence imaging of mitochondria.

The influence of the molecular packing on the room temperature phosphorescence of purely organic luminogens.

Project description:Organic luminogens with persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have attracted great attention for their wide applications in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging. However, these materials are still very scarce, partially due to the unclear mechanism and lack of designing guidelines. Herein we develop seven 10-phenyl-10H-phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide-based derivatives, reveal their different RTP properties and underlying mechanism, and exploit their potential imaging applications. Coupled with the preliminary theoretical calculations, it is found that strong π-π interactions in solid state can promote the persistent RTP. Particularly, CS-CF3 shows the unique photo-induced phosphorescence in response to the changes in molecular packing, further confirming the key influence of the molecular packing on the RTP property. Furthermore, CS-F with its long RTP lifetime could be utilized for real-time excitation-free phosphorescent imaging in living mice. Thus, our study paves the way for the development of persistent RTP materials, in both the practical applications and the inherent mechanism.
