SERRS Detection on Silver Nanoparticles Supported on Acid-Treated Melamine-Resin Microspheres.

ABSTRACT: Melamine-resin microspheres were synthesized at a pH of 4.0 for 20 min and used as silver nanoparticle (AgNP) carriers for surface enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) detection. An acetic acid-treatment reaction was introduced into the fabrication of the final substrate. The SERRS performance of the substrate was effectively optimized by regulating excess formaldehyde and experimental parameters, such as acidity, number of treatments and reaction temperature in the acid-treatment reaction. Based on the SERRS detection, it was declared that a trace amount of oligomers with a certain degree of polymerization is necessary for the construction of SERRS hotspots. In addition, it is important to remove excess oligomers with reference to the synthetic reaction of the polymer materials, given the special role of oligomers and the wide application of polymer materials in SERRS detection.

Optimizing Melamine Resin Microspheres with Excess Formaldehyde for the SERS Substrate.

Project description:Influence of the excess monomer within the synthetic reaction solution of melamine resin microspheres (MFMSs) on the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enhancement from Rhodamine 6G (R6G) was investigated, where the R6G was adsorbed on the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) that were loaded on the MFMSs. Surface characteristics of the MFMSs were modified by the excess monomer (i.e., the excessive melamine or formaldehyde) through its terminal overreaction, which can be simply controlled by some of the synthetic reaction conditions, thus further allowing us to optimize the assembly of the loaded AgNPs for the SERS detection. These SERS substrates incorporating the optimized MFMSs with the excess formaldehyde can also be used for tracing analyses of more environmental and food contaminants.

Flower-like Thiourea-Formaldehyde Resin Microspheres for the Adsorption of Silver Ions.

Project description:Around a quarter of annual worldwide silver consumption comes from recycling. It remains a primary target for researchers to increase the silver ion adsorption capacity of the chelate resin. Herein, a series of flower-like thiourea-formaldehyde microspheres (FTFM) possessing diameters of 15-20 μm were prepared via a one-step reaction under acidic conditions, and the effects of the monomer molar ratio and reaction time on the micro-flower morphology, specific surface area, and silver ion adsorption performance were explored. The nanoflower-like microstructure showed the maximum specific surface area 18.98 ± 0.949 m2/g, which was 55.8 times higher than that of the solid microsphere control. As a result, the maximum silver ion adsorption capacity was 7.95 ± 0.396 mmol/g, which was 10.9 times higher than that of the control. Kinetic studies showed that the equilibrium adsorption amount of FT1F4M was 12.61 ± 0.016 mmol/g, which was 11.6 times higher than that of the control. Additionally, the isotherm study of the adsorption process was performed, and the maximum adsorption capacity of FT1F4M was 18.17 ± 1.28 mmol/g, which was 13.8 times that of the control according to the Langmuir adsorption model. Its high absorption efficiency, convenient preparation strategy, and low cost recommend FTFM bright for further use in industrial applications.

In Situ Functionalization of Silver Nanoparticles by Gallic Acid as a Colorimetric Sensor for Simple Sensitive Determination of Melamine in Milk.

Project description:A simple and green colorimetric sensing assay strategy for highly efficient determination of melamine has been fabricated, which is based on the redox reaction of gallic acid with Ag+. Monodispersed Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were obtained using gallic acid as a reducing and stabilizing agent. However, the aggregate behavior of AgNPs was observed, while the melamine was present in the reaction medium. As a result, the color of the solution changed from vivid yellow to brown, and the density of the color was quantitatively correlated with the melamine concentration. The aggregation of AgNPs could be attributable to the formation of hydrogen bonds between melamine and gallic acid. The designed sensor exhibited a good detection limit of 0.099 μM (0.012 ppm), which was much lower than the safety limit in China (1.0 ppm) and EU (2.0 ppm). Additionally, the sensing assay displayed good selectivity toward melamine over other coexisting substances. Consequently, the proposed colorimetric sensor was successfully used for the determination of melamine detection in raw milk samples.

Project description:A strategy for rapid and facile detection of melamine in food and other substances is described. Unmodified gold nanoparticles enable a colorimetric signal output that is amplified through integration by precipitation formation via a chemical component specific to melamine. The sensitivity was determined to be approximately 40 ppb with a two standard deviation cutoff.

Supported Silver Nanoparticles as Catalysts for Liquid-Phase Betulin Oxidation.

Project description:Herein, it has been shown that betulin can be transformed into its biologically active oxo-derivatives (betulone, betulinic and betulonic aldehydes) by liquid-phase oxidation over supported silver catalysts under mild conditions. In order to identify the main factors determining the catalytic behavior of nanosilver catalysts in betulin oxidation, silver was deposited on various alumina supports (γ-alumina and boehmite) using deposition-precipitation with NaOH and incipient wetness impregnation methods, followed by treatment in H2 or O2. Silver catalysts and the corresponding supports were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the support nature, preparation and treatment methods predetermine not only the average Ag nanoparticles size and their distribution, but also the selectivity of betulin oxidation, and thereby, the catalytic behavior of Ag catalysts. In fact, the support nature had the most considerable effect. Betulin conversion, depending on the support, increased in the following order: Ag/boehmite < Ag/boehmite (calcined) < Ag/γ-alumina. However, in the same order, the share of side reactions catalyzed by strong Lewis acid centers of the support also increased. Poisoning of the latter by NaOH during catalysts preparation can reduce side reactions. Additionally, it was revealed that the betulin oxidation catalyzed by nanosilver catalysts is a structure-sensitive reaction.

Nanodiamond-supported silver nanoparticles as potent and safe antibacterial agents.

Project description:Since its discovery nearly a century ago, antibiotics has been one of the most effective methods in treating infectious diseases and limiting pathogen spread. However, pathogens often build up antibiotic resistance over time, leading to serious failure of the treatment. Silver nanoparticle (AgNP) is an appealing alternative, but successful treatment of the bacterial infection requires a plentiful supply of AgNP, which can negatively impact human health if people are excessively exposed to the particles. Here, we present a method to overcome this challenge by synthesizing nanodiamond-supported AgNP noncovalently conjugated with albumin molecules to achieve enhanced antibacterial activity and strengthened biocompatibility. Using Escherichia coli as a model bacterium, we found that the albumin-conjugated silver-diamond nanohybrids showed a long-term bactericidal effect after 36 days of the treatment at the AgNP concentration of 250 µg mL-1. Moreover, the toxicity of the nanohybrids to human cells (including human fibroblasts, lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells, and breast adenocarcinoma cells) is low even at the particle concentration of 500 µg mL-1. The method provides a general and practical solution to the concerns of bacterial resistance against AgNP and issues associated with the size, shape, aggregation, and toxicity of AgNP are largely resolved. Finally, we demonstrate that the nanohybrids can be readily incorporated into natural polysaccharides (such as guar gum) to form three-in-one hydrogels, showing promising applications in nanomedicine.

Synthesis of acrylic resin and methacrylic resin microspheres by suspension polymerization.

Project description:The process of suspension polymerization was utilized to create acrylate resin microspheres with mesh numbers of 140-200 μm and particle sizes of 100 μm for implementation in mesh coating technology. The copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methyl acrylate (MA) served as the primary polymer, with dibenzoyl peroxide (DBPO) functioning as the initiator, and a mixture of calcium carbonate and deionized water served as the dispersion medium. The surface morphology of the synthesized microspheres was analyzed through Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to confirm successful synthesis. The optimal reaction conditions for the synthesis of these microspheres were determined to be a dispersant dosage of 30 g of calcium carbonate with a monomer ratio of 4:1, a reaction time of 1 h, an initiator dosage of 1.2 g of BPO, and a reaction temperature of approximately 75-80 C, resulting in microspheres with a regular spherical shape and smooth surface.

Bionanotechnology: Silver Nanoparticles Supported on Bovine Bone Powder Used as Bactericide.

Project description:Bionanotechnology is a relatively new term that implies the use of some biological material or organisms in order to prepare nanosystems or nanoparticles. This work presents the preparation and bactericide application of a sustainable nanometric system (silver nanoparticles) using a waste biological support (bovine bone powder). This system was prepared by the method of metallic salt reduction, using NaBH4 as reducing agent and AgNO3 as metallic salt. Two silver contents were analyzed, 1% and 5% weight. The latter was found to be more efficient than the former. Transmission electronic microscopy shows an average size of 10.5 ± 3.3 nm and quasi-sphere morphology. The antimicrobial assay shows that a 5% weight content of silver had a bactericide effect for Escherichia coli at 46.8 min of exposure. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of silver nanoparticles supported on bovine bone powder for Escherichia coli was 7.5 µg/mL. The biocomposite exhibits a specific antibacterial kinetics constant (k) of 0.1128 min-1 and decimal reduction time (DRT) of 20.39 min for Escherichia coli. Thus, it was concluded that a biocomposite was prepared with a biodegradable, waste, and low-cost support, under mild conditions (room temperature and atmospheric pressure) and using water as solvent.

Aptamer-based SERRS sensor for thrombin detection.

Project description:We describe an aptamer-based surface enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) sensor with high sensitivity, specificity, and stability for the detection of a coagulation protein, human alpha-thrombin. The sensor achieves high sensitivity and a limit of detection of 100 pM by monitoring the SERRS signal change upon the single-step of thrombin binding to immobilized thrombin binding aptamer. The selectivity of the sensor is demonstrated by the specific discrimination of thrombin from other protein analytes. The specific recognition and binding of thrombin by the thrombin binding aptamer is essential to the mechanism of the aptamer-based sensor, as shown through measurements using negative control oligonucleotides. In addition, the sensor can detect 1 nM thrombin in the presence of complex biofluids, such as 10% fetal calf serum, demonstrating that the immobilized, 5'-capped, 3'-capped aptamer is sufficiently robust for clinical diagnostic applications. Furthermore, the proposed sensor may be implemented for multiplexed detection using different aptamer-Raman probe complexes.
