Revitalizing silver nanocrystals as a redox catalyst by modifying their surface with an isocyanide-based compound.

ABSTRACT: Silver is an excellent catalyst for oxidation reactions such as ethylene epoxidation, but it shows limited activity toward reduction reactions. Here we report a strategy to revitalize Ag nanocrystals as a redox catalyst for the production of an aromatic azo compound by modifying their surface with an isocyanide-based compound. We also leverage in situ fingerprint spectroscopy to acquire molecular insights into the reaction mechanism by probing the vibrational modes of all chemical species at the catalytic surface with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. We establish that binding of isocyanide to Ag nanocrystals makes it possible for Ag to extract the oxygen atoms from the nitro-groups of nitroaromatics and then use these atoms to oxidize isocyanide to isocyanate. Concurrently, the coupling between two adjacent deoxygenated nitroaromatic molecules leads to the formation of an aromatic azo compound.

The Role Silver Nanoparticles Plays in Silver-Based Double-Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:Lead-free double perovskites are studied as an optional replacement to lead halide perovskites in optoelectronic applications. Recently, double-perovskite materials in which two divalent lead cations are replaced with an Ag+ and a trivalent cation have been demonstrated. The presence of a reactive silver cation and observations of metallic silver nanodecorations raised concerns regarding the stability and applicability of these materials. To better understand the nucleation and crystal growth of lead-free double perovskites, we explore the origin and role that metallic silver nanoparticles (NPs) play in the Ag-based Pb-free double-perovskite nanocrystal (NC) systems such as Cs2AgInCl6, Cs2AgSbCl6, Cs2AgBiCl6, and Cs2AgBiBr6. With major focus on Cs2AgInCl6 NCs, we show evidence supporting growth of the NCs through heterogeneous nucleation on preexisting metallic silver seeds. The silver seeds nucleate prior to injection of halide through reduction of the Ag+ ion by the aminic ligand. The presence of preexisting silver NPs is supported by a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The injection of halide precursor into the reaction mixture step initiates a fast nucleation and growth of the perovskite NC on the silver seed. The change in the dielectric medium at the interface of the silver NP results in a quantifiable red shift of the LSPR peak. In addition, we demonstrate charge transfer from the perovskite to the silver NP through photoinduced electrochemical Ostwald ripening of the silver NPs via UV irradiation. The ripened perovskite-metal hybrid nanocrystal exhibits modified optical properties in the form of quenched emission and enhanced plasmonic absorption. Future development of Ag-based double-perovskite NC applications depends on the ability to control Ag+ reduction at all synthetic stages. This understanding is critical for delivering stability and functionality for silver-based lead-free perovskite nanocrystals.

Cellulose nanocrystals isolated from corn leaf: straightforward immobilization of silver nanoparticles as a reduction catalyst.

Project description:As the most abundant natural biopolymer on earth, celluloses have long-term emerged as a capable platform for diverse purposes. In the context of metal nanoparticles applied to catalysis, the alternatives to traditional catalyst supports by using biomass-derived renewable materials, likely nanocelluloses, have been paid a great effort, in spite of being less exploited. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals were isolated from corn leaf via chemical treatment involving alkalizing, bleaching and acid hydrolysis. The crystallinity of obtained cellulose was evaluated in each step, focusing on the effects of reactant concentration and reaction time. Cellulose nanocrystals were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), evidencing the presence of cellulose nanospheres (crystallinity index of 67.3% in comparison with 38.4% from untreated raw material) in the size range of 50 nm. Without using any additional surfactants or stabilizers, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) well-dispersed on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (silver content of 5.1 wt%) could be obtained by a simple chemical reduction using NaBH4 at room temperature. The catalytic activity was evaluated in the selective reductions of 4-nitrophenol towards 4-aminophenol and methyl orange towards aromatic amine derivatives in water at room temperature. The effects of catalyst amount and reaction time were also studied in both reduction processes, showing near-quantitative conversions within 5 minutes and obeying the pseudo-first-order kinetics, with the apparent kinetic rate constants of 8.9 × 10-3 s-1 (4-nitrophenol) and 13.6 × 10-3 s-1 (methyl orange). The chemical structure of the catalytic system was found to be highly stable during reaction and no metal leaching was detected in reaction medium, evidencing adaptability of cellulose nanocrystals in immobilizing noble metal nanoparticles.

The surface structure of silver-coated gold nanocrystals and its influence on shape control.

Project description:Understanding the surface structure of metal nanocrystals with specific facet indices is important due to its impact on controlling nanocrystal shape and functionality. However, this is particularly challenging for halide-adsorbed nanocrystals due to the difficulty in analysing interactions between metals and light halides (for example, chloride). Here we uncover the surface structures of chloride-adsorbed, silver-coated gold nanocrystals with {111}, {110}, {310} and {720} indexed facets by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory modelling. The silver-chloride, silver-silver and silver-gold bonding structures are markedly different between the nanocrystal surfaces, and are sensitive to their formation mechanism and facet type. A unique approach of combining the density functional theory and experimental/simulated X-ray spectroscopy further verifies the surface structure models and identifies the previously indistinguishable valence state of silver atoms on the nanocrystal surfaces. Overall, this work elucidates the thus-far unknown chloride-metal nanocrystal surface structures and sheds light onto the halide-induced growth mechanism of anisotropic nanocrystals.

Antifouling silicones based on surface-modifying additive amphiphiles.

Project description:Surface modifying additives (SMAs), which may be readily blended into silicones to improve anti-fouling behavior, must have excellent surface migration potential and must not leach into the aqueous environment. In this work, we evaluated the efficacy of a series of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based SMA amphiphiles which varied in terms of crosslinkability, siloxane tether length (m) and diblock versus triblock architectures. Specifically, crosslinkable, diblock PEO-silane amphiphiles with two oligodimethylsiloxane (ODMS) tether lengths [(EtO)3Si-(CH2)3-ODMS m -PEO8, m = 13 and 30] were compared to analogous non-crosslinkable, diblock (H-Si-ODMS m -PEO8) and triblock (PEO8-ODMS m -PEO8) SMAs. Prior to water conditioning, while all modified silicone coatings exhibited a high degree of water-driven surface restructuring, that prepared with the non-crosslinkable diblock SMA (m = 13) was the most hydrophilic. After conditioning, all modified silicone coatings were similarly hydrophilic and remained highly protein resistant, with the exception of PEO8-ODMS 30 -PEO8. Notably, despite twice the PEO content, triblock SMAs were not superior to diblock SMAs. For diblock SMAs, it was shown that water uptake and leaching were also similar whether or not the SMA was crosslinkable.

Electrospun Nanofibers Made of Silver Nanoparticles, Cellulose Nanocrystals, and Polyacrylonitrile as Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Project description:Nanofibers with excellent activities in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) were developed through electrospinning precursor suspensions consisting of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Rheology of the precursor suspensions, and morphology, thermal properties, chemical structures, and SERS sensitivity of the nanofibers were investigated. The electrospun nanofibers showed uniform diameters with a smooth surface. Hydrofluoric (HF) acid treatment of the PAN/CNC/Ag composite nanofibers (defined as p-PAN/CNC/Ag) led to rougher fiber surfaces with certain pores and increased mean fiber diameters. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the existence of AgNPs that were formed during heat and HF acid treatment processes. In addition, thermal stability of the electrospun nanofibers increased due to the incorporation of CNCs and AgNPs. The p-PAN/CNC/Ag nanofibers were used as a SERS substrate to detect p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) probe molecule. The results show that this substrate exhibited high sensitivity for the p-ATP probe detection.

Project description:Reaction of benzimidazolone derivatives, or their thio- or aza-counterparts, with an isocyanide in the presence of acetone unexpectedly gave rise to novel tricyclic benzodiazepine derivatives in good yield by means of a four-component reaction incorporating two moles of acetone. Benzimidazole starting substrates bearing an electron-withdrawing group gave rise instead to dihydroquinoxaline derivatives by means of a three-component reaction. Use of deuterated acetone instead of acetone in the reactions significantly affected yield and reactivity in the four-component reaction but not in the three-component reaction.

A Redox-Active Ionic Liquid Surface Treatment for Healing CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> Nanocrystals.

Project description:Additive engineering of lead halide perovskites has been a successful strategy for reducing a variety of deleterious defect types. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a unique group of such additives that have been used to passivate halide vacancies in both bulk lead halide perovskites and their colloidal nanocrystal analogues. Herein, we expand the types of defects that can be addressed through IL treatments in CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with a novel phosphonium tribromide IL that heals metallic lead surface defects through redox chemistry. This new type of surface treatment leads to a significant increase in PLQY and outperforms equivalent treatments with non-redox-active bromide ILs. Such redox-active ligands widen the scope of defect types that can be addressed in semiconductor nanocrystals.

Silver Nanoparticle Interactions with Surfactant-Based Household Surface Cleaners.

Project description:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are the most widely used engineered nanomaterials in consumer products, primarily due to their antimicrobial properties. This widespread usage has resulted in concerns regarding potential adverse environmental impacts and increased probability of human exposure. As the number of AgNP consumer products grows, the likelihood of interactions with other household materials increases. AgNP products have the potential to interact with household cleaning products in laundry, dishwashers, or during general use of all-purpose surface cleaners. This study has investigated the interaction between surfactant-based surface cleaning products and AgNPs of different sizes and with different capping agents. One AgNP consumer product, two laboratory-synthesized AgNPs, and ionic silver were selected for interaction with one cationic, one anionic, and one nonionic surfactant product to simulate AgNP transformations during consumer product usage before disposal and subsequent environmental release. Changes in size, morphology, and chemical composition were detected during a 60 min exposure to surfactant-based surface cleaning products using ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Generally, once AgNP suspensions were exposed to surfactant-based surface cleaning products, all the particles showed an initial aggregation, likely due to disruption of their capping agents. Over the 60 min exposure, cleaning agent-1 (cationic) showed more significant particle aggregates than cleaning agent-2 (anionic) and cleaning agent-3 (nonionic). In addition, UV/Vis, TEM-EDX, and DLS confirmed formation of incidental AgNPs from interaction of ionic silver with all surfactant types.
