Enantioselective additions to oxocarbenium ions are high-value synthetic transformations but have proven challenging to achieve. In particular, the oxa-Pictet-Spengler reaction has only recently been rendered enantioselective. We report experimental and computational studies on the mechanism of this unusual transformation.
