A covalent organic cage compound acting as a supramolecular shadow mask for the regioselective functionalization of C₆₀.

ABSTRACT: A trigonal-bipyramidal covalent organic cage compound serves as an efficient host to form stable 1 : 1-complexes with C₆₀ and C₇₀. Fullerene encapsulation has been comprehensively studied by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Exohedral functionalization of encapsulated C₆₀ via threefold Prato reaction revealed high selectivity for the symmetry-matched all-trans-3 addition pattern.

Bimodal supramolecular functionalization of carbon nanotubes triggered by covalent bond formation.

Project description:Many applications of carbon nanotubes require their chemical functionalization. Both covalent and supramolecular approaches have been extensively investigated. A less trodden path is the combination of both covalent and noncovalent chemistries, where the formation of covalent bonds triggers a particularly stable noncovalent interaction with the nanotubes. We describe a series of naphthalene diimide (NDI) bisalkene molecules that, upon mixing with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and Grubbs' catalyst, undergo two different reaction pathways. On one hand, they ring-close around the SWNTs to form rotaxane-like mechanically interlocked derivatives of SWNTs (MINTs). Alternatively, they oligomerize and then wrap around the SWNTs. The balance of MINTs to oligomer-wrapped SWNTs depends on the affinity of the NDI molecules for the SWNTs and the kinetics of the metathesis reactions, which can be controlled by varying the solvent. Thorough characterization of the products (TGA, TEM, AFM, Raman, UV-vis-NIR, PLE, XPS and UPS) confirms their structure and shows that each type of functionalization affects the electronic properties of the SWNTs differently.

Assembly of Dy60 and Dy30 cage-shaped nanoclusters.

Project description:Rapid kinetics, complex and diverse reaction intermediates, and difficult screening make the study of assembly mechanisms of high-nuclearity lanthanide clusters challenging. Here, we synthesize a double-cage dysprosium cluster [Dy60(H2L1)24(OAc)71(O)5(OH)3(H2O)27]·6H2O·6CH3OH·7CH3CN (Dy60) by using a multidentate chelate-coordinated diacylhydrazone ligand. Two Dy30 cages are included in the Dy60 structure, which are connected via an OAc- moiety. The core of Dy60 is composed of 8 triangular Dy3 and 12-fold linear Dy3 units. We further change the alkali added in the reaction system and successfully obtain a single cage-shaped cluster [Dy30(H2L1)12(OAc)36(OH)4(H2O)12]·2OH·10H2O·12CH3OH·13CH3CN (Dy30) with a perfect spherical cavity, which could be considered an intermediate in Dy60 formation. Time-dependent, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) is used to track the formation of Dy60. A possible self-assembly mechanism is proposed. We track the formation of Dy30 and the six intermediate fragments are screened.

Hydrogen-Driven Cage Unzipping of C60 into Nano-Graphenes.

Project description:Annealing of C60 in hydrogen at temperatures above the stability limit of C-H bonds in C60H x (500-550 °C) is found to result in direct collapse of the cage structure, evaporation of light hydrocarbons, and formation of solid mixture composed of larger hydrocarbons and few-layered graphene sheets. Only a minor part of this mixture is soluble; this was analyzed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization MS, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and found to be a rather complex mixture of hydrocarbon molecules composed of at least tens of different compounds. The sequence of most abundant peaks observed in MS, which corresponds to C2H2 mass difference, suggests a stepwise breakup of the fullerene cage into progressively smaller molecular fragments edge-terminated by hydrogen. A simple model of hydrogen-driven C60 unzipping is proposed to explain the observed sequence of fragmentation products. The insoluble part of the product mixture consists of large planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as evidenced by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, and some larger sheets composed of few-layered graphene, as observed by transmission electron microscopy. Hydrogen annealing of C60 thin films showed a thickness-dependent results with reaction products significantly different for the thinnest films compared to bulk powders. Hydrogen annealing of C60 films with the thickness below 10 nm was found to result in formation of nanosized islands with Raman spectra very similar to the spectra of coronene oligomers and conductivity typical for graphene.

Fullerene [60] encapsulated water-soluble supramolecular cage for prevention of oxidative stress-induced myocardial injury.

Project description:A water-soluble cube-like supramolecular cage was constructed by an engagement of six molecules through a hydrophobic effect in the water. The obtained cage could perfectly encapsulate one fullerene C60 molecule inside of the cavity and significantly improve the water-solubility of the C60 without changing the original structure. The water-soluble complex was further applied to reduce the reactive oxygen species (R.O.S.) in cardiomyocytes (FMC84) through Akt/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Furthermore, in the mouse model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, the application of C60 was found to be effective in reducing myocardial injury and improving cardiac function. It also reduced the levels of R.O.S. in myocardial tissue, inhibited myocardial apoptosis, and mitigated myocardial inflammatory responses. The present study provides a new guideline for constructing water-soluble C60 and verifies the important role of C60 in preventing oxidative stress-related cardiovascular disease injury.

Supramolecular Binding with Lectins: A New Route for Non-Covalent Functionalization of Polysaccharide Matrices.

Project description:The chemical functionalization of polysaccharides to obtain functional materials has been of great interest in the last decades. This traditional synthetic approach has drawbacks, such as changing the crystallinity of the material or altering its morphology or texture. These modifications are crucial when a biogenic matrix is exploited for its hierarchical structure. In this work, the use of lectins and carbohydrate-binding proteins as supramolecular linkers for polysaccharide functionalization is proposed. As proof of concept, a deproteinized squid pen, a hierarchically-organized β-chitin matrix, was functionalized using a dye (FITC) labeled lectin; the lectin used was the wheat germ agglutinin (WGA). It has been observed that the binding of this functionalized protein homogenously introduces a new property (fluorescence) into the β-chitin matrix without altering its crystallographic and hierarchical structure. The supramolecular functionalization of polysaccharides with protein/lectin molecules opens up new routes for the chemical modification of polysaccharides. This novel approach can be of interest in various scientific fields, overcoming the synthetic limits that have hitherto hindered the technological exploitation of polysaccharides-based materials.

Project description:A computer program was used to create random amino acid sequences based on and restricted by physical shadow masks which will be used for lithography-based synthesis of peptides. The output from this algorithm was used to create peptides that were synthesized by Sigma Aldrich, and printed onto glass slides. The arrays contained 384 peptides printed in duplicate for each of 4 different mask designs. 52 different monoclonal antibodies were incubated on these microarrays and analyzed for their propensity to bind the peptides created from each mask set. The diversity of binding served as a proxy for the 'randomness' of these peptides, and provided information about how many masks are needed to truly generate random sequence peptides.

Project description:In this paper several computer programs were used to simulate in situ synthesis of peptides using shadow masks and BOC synthesis. The peptides were designed to be random, or pseudo-random, but fulfill requirements of immunosignaturing. This file contains data from actual 330,000 peptide arrays that used the first iteration of the peptide generation algorithm. Monoclonal antibodies were bound to the microarrays and the total number of peptides that distinguished each monoclonal was measured. This provides a baseline against which to compare purely random sequences.

Au3-to-Ag3 coordinate-covalent bonding and other supramolecular interactions with covalent bonding strength.

Project description:An efficient strategy for designing charge-transfer complexes using coinage metal cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTCs) is described herein. Due to opposite quadrupolar electrostatic contributions from metal ions and ligand substituents, [Au(μ-Pz-(i-C3H7)2)]3·[Ag(μ-Tz-(n-C3F7)2)]3 (Pz = pyrazolate, Tz = triazolate) has been obtained and its structure verified by single crystal X-ray diffraction - representing the 1st crystallographically-verified stacked adduct of monovalent coinage metal CTCs. Abundant supramolecular interactions with aggregate covalent bonding strength arise from a combination of M-M' (Au → Ag), metal-π, π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding in this charge-transfer complex, according to density functional theory analyses, yielding a computed binding energy of 66 kcal mol-1 between the two trimer moieties - a large value for intermolecular interactions between adjacent d10 centres (nearly doubling the value for a recently-claimed Au(i) → Cu(i) polar-covalent bond: Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 2017, 114, E5042) - which becomes 87 kcal mol-1 with benzene stacking. Surprisingly, DFT analysis suggests that: (a) some other literature precedents should have attained a stacked product akin to the one herein, with similar or even higher binding energy; and (b) a high overall intertrimer bonding energy by inferior electrostatic assistance, underscoring genuine orbital overlap between M and M' frontier molecular orbitals in such polar-covalent M-M' bonds in this family of molecules. The Au → Ag bonding is reminiscent of classical Werner-type coordinate-covalent bonds such as H3N: → Ag in [Ag(NH3)2]+, as demonstrated herein quantitatively. Solid-state and molecular modeling illustrate electron flow from the π-basic gold trimer to the π-acidic silver trimer with augmented contributions from ligand-to-ligand' (LL'CT) and metal-to-ligand (MLCT) charge transfer.
