An advancement in the synthesis of nano Pd@magnetic amine-Functionalized UiO-66-NH₂ catalyst for cyanation and O-arylation reactions.

ABSTRACT: The magnetic MOF-based catalytic system has been reported here to be an efficient catalyst for synthesis of benzonitriles and diarylethers of aryl halides under optimal conditions. The MOF catalyst was built based on magnetic nanoparticles and UiO-66-NH₂ which further modified with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and 5-phenyl tetrazole at the same time and the catalyst structure was confirmed by various techniques. This new modification has been applied to increase anchoring palladium into the support. Furthermore, the products' yields were obtained in good to excellent for all reactions under mild conditions which result from superior activity of the synthesized heterogeneous catalyst containing palladium. Also, the magnetic property of the MOF-based catalyst makes it easy to separate from reaction mediums and reuse in the next runs.

NH2-Modified UiO-66: Structural Characteristics and Functional Properties.

Project description:The development of new functional materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorption and catalytic applications is one of the promising trends of modern materials science. The Zr-based MOFs, specifically UiO-66, are considered as the supports for metallic catalysts for the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural platform molecule reduction into valuable products. The present work focused on the effect of NH2 modification of UiO-66 on its structure and functional properties. The samples were prepared by a solvothermal method. The structure of the obtained materials was studied by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. Basic properties were investigated by HCl and CH3COOH adsorption, and electrokinetic properties were studied by electrophoretic light scattering. UiO-66-NH2 samples with different contents of aminoterephthalate linkers were successfully prepared. A gradual decrease in the specific surface area and the fraction of micropores with a diameter of ~0.9 nm was observed with an increase in the aminoterephthalate content. A proportional increase in the total number of basic sites in UiO-66-NH2 samples was established with an increase in the aminoterephthalate content up to 75%. At the same time, a noticeable decrease in the total number of basic sites and an increase in their strength with higher aminoterephthalate content was observed.

Comparative Study of Pd-Ni Bimetallic Catalysts Supported on UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 in Selective 1,3-Butadiene Hydrogenation.

Project description:Selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene (BD) is regarded as the most promising route for removing BD from butene streams. Bimetallic Pd-Ni catalysts with changed Pd/Ni molar ratios and monometallic Pd catalysts were synthesized using two differently structured metal-organic framework supports: UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2. The effects of the structure of support and the molar ratio of Pd/Ni on the catalytic property of selective BD hydrogenation were studied. The Pd-Ni bimetallic supported catalysts, PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) and PdNi/UiO-66-NH2 (1:1), exhibited fine catalytic property at low temperature. Compared with UiO-66, UiO-66-NH2 with a certain number of alkaline sites could reduce the catalytic activity for the BD hydrogenation reaction. However, the alkaline environment of UiO-66-NH2 is helpful to improve the butene selectivity. PdNi/UiO-66-NH2 (1:1) catalyst presented better stability than PdNi/UiO-66 (1:1) under the reaction conditions, caused by the strong interaction between the -NH2 groups of UiO-66-NH2 and PdNi NPs. Moreover, the PdNi/UiO-66-NH2 (1:1) catalyst presented good reproducibility in the hydrogenation of BD. These findings afford a beneficial guidance for the design and preparation of efficient catalysts for selective BD hydrogenation.

UiO-66-NH2 based fluorescent sensing for detection of tetracyclines in milk.

Project description:In this work, a fluorescent sensor based on a zirconium-based metal organic framework was prepared for the detection of tetracyclines (TCs) in milk. The UiO-66-NH2 fluorescent sensor was synthesized by a simple microwave-assisted method with 2-aminoterephthalic acid and zirconium chloride as precursors. In the presence of target TCs, the synergistic effect of the inner filter effect (IFE) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET) was responsible for the fluorescence quenching of UiO-66-NH2, and the fluorescence sensor showed a rapid fluorescence quenching response (5 min) to target TCs. The proposed UiO-66-NH2 sensor had good sensitivity and selectivity, and under the optimal conditions possessed detection limits of 0.449, 0.431, and 0.163 μM for tetracycline (TET), oxytetracycline (OTC), and doxycycline (DOX), respectively. Besides, the UiO-66-NH2 sensor was successfully applied to the quantitative detection of TCs in milk samples with reasonable recoveries of 93.26-115.17%, and the detection results achieved from the as-fabricated fluorescence sensing assay were consistent with those of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), indicating the potential applicability of the UiO-66-NH2 sensor for detecting TCs in actual food samples.

Degradation of chemical warfare agents over cotton fabric functionalized with UiO-66-NH2.

Project description:Herein, cotton fabric was treated with an alkaline solution to increase the content of surface hydroxyl groups and then functionalized with UiO-66-NH2, a nanoporous metal-organic framework. Instrumental analysis of the thus treated fabric revealed that its surface was covered with UiO-66-NH2 crystals in a uniform manner. The ability of the functionalized fabric to degrade two chemical warfare agents (soman and sulfur mustard) was probed by testing its permeability to these two agents (swatch testing), and the excellent degradation performance was concluded to be well suited for a broad range of filtration and decontamination applications.

Mixed-Matrix Membranes Formed from Imide-Functionalized UiO-66-NH2 for Improved Interfacial Compatibility.

Project description:Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) formed by dispersing metal-organic framework (MOF) particles in polymers have attracted significant attention because these composite systems can potentially surpass the separation performance of pure polymers alone. However, performance improvements are often unrealized because of poor interfacial compatibility between the MOF and the polymer, which results in interfacial defects. From a practical perspective, strategies are needed to address these defects so that MMMs can be deployed in real-world separation processes. From a fundamental perspective, strategies are needed to reliably form defect-free MMMs so that transport models can be applied to estimate pure MOF property sets, thereby enabling the development of robust structure-property relationships. To address these interfacial challenges, we have developed a method to surface-functionalize a UiO-66-NH2 MOF with a nanoscopic shell of covalently tethered 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride-Durene oligomers. When combined with a high-molecular-weight polymer of identical chemical structure to that of the imide-functional MOF surface, defect-free MMMs with uniform particle dispersions can be formed. With this technique, both permeabilities and selectivities of select gases in the MMMs were improved at loadings ranging from 5 to 40 wt %. At a 40 wt % loading, CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 selectivity were enhanced by 48 and 15%, respectively. Additionally, pure MOF permeabilities for H2, N2, O2, CH4, and CO2 were predicted by the Maxwell model.

A thin film nanocomposite membrane with pre-immobilized UiO-66-NH2 toward enhanced nanofiltration performance.

Project description:A facile controlled interfacial polymerization strategy was proposed for the synthesis of novel thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes for enhanced nanofiltration performance. UiO-66 nanoparticles were aminated and pre-immobilized onto a polymer substrate via polydopamine (PDA) coating to achieve a continuous and defect-free polyamide dense layer. The mediation of the PDA coating could not only enhance the structural stability of TFN nanofiltration membranes, but also improve the dispersion and anchorage of UiO-66-NH2, thus closely fixing the position of UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles on the polymer substrate. Moreover, since the amino group (-NH2) further reacted with PDA via Michael addition or Schiff base reaction, the in situ mutual reaction reduced the nanoparticle losses significantly during the draining off of the monomer solution in the fabrication process, which effectively cut down the actual dosage. The results showed that the PDA interlayer could induce the tight attachment of the PA layer to the support, enhancing the structural stability of TFN membranes. Furthermore, the dosage of UiO-66-NH2 in the as-prepared TFN membranes could also be decreased to as low as 0.01 w/v%, which was nearly a 10-20-fold reduction in the required amount of UiO-66-NH2 for the synthesis. The fabricated TFN/UiO-66-NH2 membranes exhibited very high water permeance and competitive salt rejections in cross-flow nanofiltration, which shows the huge potential for the application of novel TFN membranes with controlled nanoparticle incorporation in industrial separation.

Esterification of fluorinated aromatic carboxylic acids with methanol by using UiO-66-NH2 as a heterogeneous catalyst and process optimization by the Taguchi method.

Project description:Fluorobenzoic acids (FBAs) are used as chemical tracers in enhanced oil recovery and reduction in their limit of detection is a crucial issue. GC-MS is a versatile tool to detect and quantify FBAs at very low limits of concentration, but they require esterification prior to analysis by GC-MS. The present article presents a study of the catalytic methyl esterification of fluorinated aromatic carboxylic acids (FBAs) using methanol as methyl source and UiO-66-NH2 as a heterogeneous catalyst. The reaction time was reduced to 10 hours which is a 58% reduction in time over the traditional BF3·MeOH complex as derivatizing agent. The yield of the esterification reaction was evaluated with respect to the BF3-MeOH complex and determined by GC-EI-MS. The catalytic procedure was optimized by the Taguchi model with a 99.99% fit. Good catalytic performance was observed for 23 different isomers of fluorinated aromatic acids showing a relative conversion yield of up to 169.86%, which reduced the detection limit of FBAs up to 2.60 ng mL-1.

Polyethyleneimine-Modified UiO-66-NH2(Zr) Metal-Organic Frameworks: Preparation and Enhanced CO2 Selective Adsorption.

Project description:UiO-66-NH2, a zirconium-based functional metal-organic framework (MOF), was postsynthetically modified via Schiff base reaction between aldehyde groups in glutaraldehyde and amino groups in UiO-66-NH2 and CO2-preabsorbed polyethyleneimine (PEI). The resulting PEI-modified MOFs, abbreviated as PEIC@UiO, were characterized with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis and evaluated as CO2 adsorbents. In comparison with pristine UiO-66-NH2, the PEIC@UiO adsorbents have reduced specific surface area (7-150 m2/g) but maintained the same crystal structure. Particularly, the PEIC96@UiO adsorbent exhibited significantly improved CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity (48 vs 25) and higher CO2 adsorption capacity (3.2 vs 2.7 mmol/g). The adsorbent also displayed moderate desorption energy (68 kJ/mol CO2), superior moisture endurance, and recyclability, which are very desirable for practical applications.

Towards metal-organic framework based field effect chemical sensors: UiO-66-NH2 for nerve agent detection.

Project description:We present a highly sensitive gas detection approach for the infamous 'nerve agent' group of alkyl phosphonate compounds. Signal transduction is achieved by monitoring the work function shift of metal-organic framework UiO-66-NH2 coated electrodes upon exposure to ppb-level concentrations of a target simulant. Using the Kelvin probe technique, we demonstrate the potential of electrically insulating MOFs for integration in field effect devices such as ChemFETs: a three orders of magnitude improvement over previous work function-based detection of nerve agent simulants. Moreover, the signal is fully reversible both in dry and humid conditions, down to low ppb concentrations. Comprehensive investigation of the interactions that lead towards this high sensitivity points towards a series of confined interactions between the analyte and the pore interior of UiO-66-NH2.

High Gas Permeability in Aged Superglassy Membranes with Nanosized UiO-66-NH2 /cPIM-1 Network Fillers.

Project description:Superglassy membranes synthesised by polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) suffer from physical aging and show poor gas permeance over time, especially thin membranes, due to the fast rearrangement of nonequilibrium polymer chains. Herein, we constructed a novel PIM-1 thin film nanocomposite membrane (TFN) using nanosized UiO-66-NH2 (≈10 nm)/carboxylated PIM-1 (cPIM-1) as the composite filler. Unlike conventional fillers, which interact with the polymer only via the surface, the UiO-66-NH2 /cPIM-1 forms a stable three-dimensional (3D) network intertwining with the polymer chains, being very effective to impede chain relaxation, and thus physical aging. Nanosizing of UiO-66-NH2 was achieved by regulating the nucleation kinetics using carbon quantum dots (CQD) during the synthesis. This led to increased surface area, and hence more functional groups to bond with cPIM-1 (via hydrogen bonding between -NH2 and -COOH groups), which also improved interfacial compatibility between the 3D network and polymer chains avoiding defect formation. As a result, the novel TFN showed significantly improved performance in gas separation along with reduced aging (i.e. ≈6 % loss in CO2 permeability over 63 days); the aged membranes had a CO2 permeance of 2504 GPU and ideal selectivity values of 37.2 and 23.8 for CO2 /N2 and CO2 /CH4 , respectively.
