Wave generator as an alternative for classic and innovative wave transmission path vibration mitigation techniques.

ABSTRACT: In this paper the author proposes an approach in the form of an active wave generator for ground surface vibration reduction. The idea is compared to classic and innovative vibration mitigation techniques. The solution is mainly addressed to prevent people and structures against the destructive effects of anthropogenic vibrations. The efficiency of the presented idea is verified in the paper for two types of excitation-harmonic and impact loads, for points located on the ground surface and below it. The vibration reduction effect for structures is presented in the paper in the case of a three-story building. The advantages and disadvantages of the presented solutions are summarized. Moreover, this paper presents a wide and up-to-date literature review on the vibration control of the ground surface. Classical well-known technologies in the form of ground obstacles are compared with innovative ideas such as metamaterials.

Self-Assembled Electret for Vibration-Based Power Generator.

Project description:The vibration-based electret generators (EGs) for energy harvesting have been extensively studied because they can obtain electrical energy from ambient vibrations. EGs exhibit a sandwich structure of electrodes surrounding an air gap and an electret, which is a dielectric material with a quasi-permanent electrical charge or dipole polarisation. Various charging processes have been developed because the surface charge density (σ) of the electret determines the output power of the device. However, such processes are considered to constitute a key productivity-limiting factor from the mass production viewpoint, making their simplification or elimination a highly desired objective. Herein, a model EG that does not require any charging process by utilising the spontaneous orientation polarisation of 1,3,5-tris(1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole-2-yl)benzene (TPBi) is demonstrated. The surface potential (Vsp) of an evaporated TPBi film has reached 30.2 V at a film thickness of 500 nm without using a charging process. The estimated σ of 1.7 mC m-2 is comparable with that obtained using a conventional polymer-based electret after charging. Furthermore, Vsp is considerably stable in environmental conditions; thus, TPBi can be considered to be "self-assembled" electret (SAE). Application of SAE leads to developing an EG without requiring the charging process.

Constructing origami power generator from one piece of electret thin film and application in AI-enabled transmission line vibration monitoring.

Project description:One of the crucial issues for applying electret/triboelectric power generators in the Internet of Things (IoT) is to take full advantage of specific high voltage signals and enable self-powered sensing. Therefore, inspired by Miura-origami, we present an innovative origami power generator (OPG) constructed from only one piece of electret thin film. The Miura-origami architecture realizes a generator with excellent deformability and stretchability and makes it unnecessary for any auxiliary support structure during the compress-release cycle. Various parameters of the generator are intensively investigated, including the excitation accelerations, excitation displacements, numbers of power generation units and deformation degree of the device. When stimulated with 5.0 g acceleration at 15 Hz frequency, the generator with 8 generation units can obtain an instantaneous peak-to-peak voltage and a remarkable optimum peak power of 328 V and 2152 μW at 50 MΩ, respectively. In addition, the regulable shape and multiple generation modes of the device greatly improve its applicability in various vibration energy collection requirements. Based on the above results, a hexagonal electret generator integrated with six-phase OPGs is developed as a "Buoy on Sky," after which the signal waveforms generated from internal power generators are recognized with 92% accuracy through a neural network algorithm that identifies the vibration conditions of transmission lines. This work demonstrates that a fusion of origami art and energy conversion techniques can achieve a multifunctional generator design satisfying the requirements for IoT applications.

Bio-inspired heterogeneous composites for broadband vibration mitigation.

Project description:Structural biological materials have developed heterogeneous and hierarchical architectures that are responsible for the outstanding performance to provide protection against environmental threats including static and dynamic loading. Inspired by this observation, this research aims to develop new material and structural concepts for broadband vibration mitigation. The proposed composite materials possess a two-layered heterogeneous architecture where both layers consist of high-volume platelet-shape reinforcements and low-volume matrix, similar to the well-known "brick and mortar" microstructure of biological composites. Using finite element method, we numerically demonstrated that broadband wave attenuation zones can be achieved by tailoring the geometric features of the heterogeneous architecture. We reveal that the resulting broadband attenuation zones are gained by directly superimposing the attenuation zones in each constituent layer. This mechanism is further confirmed by the investigation into the phonon dispersion relation of each layer. Importantly, the broadband wave attenuation capability will be maintained when the mineral platelet orientation is locally manipulated, yet a contrast between the mineral platelet concentrations of the two constituent layers is essential. The findings of this work will provide new opportunities to design heterogeneous composites for broadband vibration mitigation and impact resistance under mechanically challenging environmental conditions.

Vibration mitigation efficiency of an inclined, curved, open trench.

Project description:The vibration screening efficiency of a curved, inclined, open trench is investigated in this paper. An elastic, transversely isotropic half-space with hysteretic damping, acted upon by a harmonic vertical excitation, is assumed. Equations of motion with absorbing boundary conditions are presented and numerically integrated using FlexPDE software, based on the finite element method. The barrier efficiency is analysed in terms of the reduction of the vertical and horizontal components of the ground surface vibration. The results are presented for trenches with different geometric features based on the non-dimensional amplitude reduction factor. The trench inclination angle, the shape of the trench surface and the distance between the source of vibration and an obstacle are investigated as factors that can improve the trench reduction ability. It is demonstrated that a better attenuation of vibration is achieved with the proposed inclined trench than with its vertical counterpart. Moreover, the vibration mitigation effect is more significant in the case of a more horizontally located trench than for its vertical counterpart (even up to 5 times smaller displacement amplitudes for the vertical displacement component). Additionally, assuming the same trench depth, the vibration reduction effect is better in the case of a smaller number of rings used. The vibration attenuation efficiency is more visible if the trench is located closer to the vibration source.

An actin-based wave generator organizes cell motility.

Project description:Although many of the regulators of actin assembly are known, we do not understand how these components act together to organize cell shape and movement. To address this question, we analyzed the spatial dynamics of a key actin regulator--the Scar/WAVE complex--which plays an important role in regulating cell shape in both metazoans and plants. We have recently discovered that the Hem-1/Nap1 component of the Scar/WAVE complex localizes to propagating waves that appear to organize the leading edge of a motile immune cell, the human neutrophil. Actin is both an output and input to the Scar/WAVE complex: the complex stimulates actin assembly, and actin polymer is also required to remove the complex from the membrane. These reciprocal interactions appear to generate propagated waves of actin nucleation that exhibit many of the properties of morphogenesis in motile cells, such as the ability of cells to flow around barriers and the intricate spatial organization of protrusion at the leading edge. We propose that cell motility results from the collective behavior of multiple self-organizing waves.

Innovative techniques to discover novel antimalarials.

Project description:Malaria a global pandemic has engulfed nearly 0.63 million people globally. It is high time that a cure for malaria is required to stop its ever increasing menace. Our commentary discusses the advent and contribution of genetic algorithm (GA) in the drug discovery efforts towards developing cure for malaria. GAs are computational models of Darwinian evolution, ideally capture and mimic the principles of genetic variation and natural selection to evolve good solutions through multiple iterations on the space of all possible candidate solutions, called the search space, to a given optimization problem. Herein we will discuss the applications, advantages, disadvantages and future directions of GA with respect to malaria.

Optimization of segmented thermoelectric generator using Taguchi and ANOVA techniques.

Project description:Recent studies have demonstrated that segmented thermoelectric generators (TEGs) can operate over large thermal gradient and thus provide better performance (reported efficiency up to 11%) as compared to traditional TEGs, comprising of single thermoelectric (TE) material. However, segmented TEGs are still in early stages of development due to the inherent complexity in their design optimization and manufacturability. In this study, we demonstrate physics based numerical techniques along with Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Taguchi optimization method for optimizing the performance of segmented TEGs. We have considered comprehensive set of design parameters, such as geometrical dimensions of p-n legs, height of segmentation, hot-side temperature, and load resistance, in order to optimize output power and efficiency of segmented TEGs. Using the state-of-the-art TE material properties and appropriate statistical tools, we provide near-optimum TEG configuration with only 25 experiments as compared to 3125 experiments needed by the conventional optimization methods. The effect of environmental factors on the optimization of segmented TEGs is also studied. Taguchi results are validated against the results obtained using traditional full factorial optimization technique and a TEG configuration for simultaneous optimization of power and efficiency is obtained.

Intelligent Device for Harvesting the Vibration Energy of the Automobile Exhaust with a Piezoelectric Generator.

Project description:With increasing consumption of energy and increasing environmental pollution, research on capturing the vibration energy lost during transportation and vehicle driving is growing rapidly. There is a large amount of vibration energy in the automobile exhaust system that can be recycled. This paper proposes a self-powered intelligent device (SPID) using a piezoelectric energy generator. The SPID includes a piezoelectric generator and sensor unit, and the generator is installed at the end of the automobile exhaust system. The generator adopts a parallel structure of four piezoelectric power generation units, and the sensing unit comprises light-emitting diode warning lights or low-power sensors. A simulated excitation experiment verifies the working state and peak power of the piezoelectric generator unit, which can achieve 23.4 μW peak power. The self-power supply and signal monitoring functions of the intelligent device are verified in experiments conducted for driving light-emitting diode lights and low-power sensors. The device is expected to play a crucial role in the field of intelligent driving and automobile intelligence.

Alternative COVID-19 mitigation measures in school classrooms: analysis using an agent-based model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

Project description:The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has impacted children's education, with schools required to implement infection control measures that have led to periods of absence and classroom closures. We developed an agent-based epidemiological model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in a school classroom that allows us to quantify projected infection patterns within primary school classrooms, and related uncertainties. Our approach is based on a contact model constructed using random networks, informed by structured expert judgement. The effectiveness of mitigation strategies in suppressing infection outbreaks and limiting pupil absence are considered. COVID-19 infections in primary schools in England in autumn 2020 were re-examined and the model was then used to estimate infection levels in autumn 2021, as the Delta variant was emerging and it was thought likely that school transmission would play a major role in an incipient new wave of the epidemic. Our results were in good agreement with available data. These findings indicate that testing-based surveillance is more effective than bubble quarantine, both for reducing transmission and avoiding pupil absence, even accounting for insensitivity of self-administered tests. Bubble quarantine entails large numbers of absences, with only modest impact on classroom infections. However, maintaining reduced contact rates within the classroom can have a major benefit for managing COVID-19 in school settings.
