Investigating states of gas in water encapsulated between graphene layers.

ABSTRACT: Conventionally, only two states are assumed to exist in water: well-dispersed gas monomers and gas bubbles. Rarely is this paradigm explored experimentally. To close this gap, here we used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study degassed water, deionized water, and gas-supersaturated water encapsulated in graphene liquid cells. While neither degassed water nor deionized water yielded specific features, two major microscopic structures were evident in gas-supersaturated water: (1) polycrystalline nanoparticles formed of gas molecules and (2) a high density of tiny cells. Dark-field TEM imaging revealed that water molecules surrounding each cell form crystalline structures-a surprising discovery of a clathrate state in gas-supersaturated water that may help resolve several long-standing puzzles. Overall, this study suggests that water may form a matrix that actively interacts with gas molecules in complex and subtle ways.

Formation of Water Layers on Graphene Surfaces.

Project description:Although graphitic materials were thought to be hydrophobic, recent experimental results based on contact angle measurements show that the hydrophobicity of graphitic surfaces stems from airborne contamination of hydrocarbons. This leads us to question whether a pristine graphitic surface is indeed hydrophobic. To investigate the water wettability of graphitic surfaces, we use molecular dynamics simulations of water molecules on the surface of a single graphene layer at room temperature. The results indicate that a water droplet spreads over the entire surface and that a double-layer structure of water molecules forms on the surface, which means that wetting of graphitic surfaces is possible, but only by two layers of water molecules. No further water layers can cohere to the double-layer structure, but the formation of three-dimensional clusters of liquid water is confirmed. The surface of the double-layer structure acts as a hydrophobic surface. Such peculiar behavior of water molecules can be reasonably explained by the formation of hydrogen bonds: The hydrogen bonds of the interfacial water molecules form between the first two layers and also within each layer. This hydrogen-bond network is confined within the double layer, which means that no "dangling hydrogen bonds" appear on the surface of the double-layer structure. This formation of hydrogen bonds stabilizes the double-layer structure and makes its surface hydrophobic. Thus, the numerical simulations indicate that a graphene surface is perfectly wettable on the atomic scale and becomes hydrophobic once it is covered by this double layer of water molecules.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Reveal that Water Diffusion between Graphene Oxide Layers is Slow.

Project description:Membranes made of stacked layers of graphene oxide (GO) hold the tantalizing promise of revolutionizing desalination and water filtration if selective transport of molecules can be controlled. We present the findings of an integrated study that combines experiment and molecular dynamics simulation of water intercalated between GO layers. We simulated a range of hydration levels from 1 wt.% to 23.3 wt.% water. The interlayer spacing increased upon hydration from 0.8 nm to 1.1 nm. We also synthesized GO membranes that showed an increase in layer spacing from about 0.7 nm to 0.8 nm and an increase in mass of about 15% on hydration. Water diffusion through GO layers is an order of magnitude slower than that in bulk water, because of strong hydrogen bonded interactions. Most of the water molecules are bound to OH groups even at the highest hydration level. We observed large water clusters that could span graphitic regions, oxidized regions and holes that have been experimentally observed in GO. Slow interlayer diffusion can be consistent with experimentally observed water transport in GO if holes lead to a shorter path length than previously assumed and sorption serves as a key rate-limiting step.

Structures and thermodynamics of water encapsulated by graphene.

Project description:Understanding phase behaviors of nanoconfined water has driven notable research interests recently. In this work, we examine water encapsulated under a graphene cover that offers an ideal testbed to explore its molecular structures and thermodynamics. We find layered water structures for up to ~1000 trapped water molecules, which is stabilized by the spatial confinement and pressure induced by interfacial adhesion. For monolayer encapsulations, we identify representative two-dimensional crystalline lattices as well as defects therein. Free energy analysis shows that the structural orders with low entropy are compensated by high formation energies due to the pressurized confinement. There exists an order-to-disorder transition for this condensed phase at ~480-490 K, with a sharp reduction in the number of hydrogen bonds and increase in the entropy. Fast diffusion of the encapsulated water demonstrates anomalous temperature dependence, indicating the solid-to-fluid nature of this structural transition. These findings offer fundamental understandings of the encapsulated water that can be used as a pressurized cell with trapped molecular species, and provide guidance for practical applications with its presence, for example, in the design of nanodevices and nanoconfined reactive cells.

NiCo nanoalloy encapsulated in graphene layers for improving hydrogen storage properties of LiAlH4.

Project description:NiCo nanoalloy (4-6 nm) encapsulated in grapheme layers (NiCo@G) has been prepared by thermolysis of a 3D bimetallic complex CoCo[Ni(EDTA)]2·4H2O and successfully employed as a catalyst to improve the dehydrogenation performances of LiAlH4 by solid ball-milling. NiCo@G presents a superior catalytic effect on the dehydrogenation of LiAlH4. For LiAlH4 doped with 1 wt% NiCo@G (LiAlH4-1 wt% NiCo@G), the onset dehydrogenation temperature of LiAlH4 is as low as 43 °C, which is 109 °C lower than that of pristine LiAlH4. 7.3 wt% of hydrogen can be released from LiAlH4-1 wt% NiCo@G at 150 °C within 60 min. The activation energies of LiAlH4 dehydrogenation are extremely reduced by 1 wt% NiCo@G doping.

Asymmetric gas diffusion layers for improved water management in PGM-free electrodes.

Project description:Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) offer a long-term, carbon-emission free solution to the energy needs of the transportation sector. However, high cost continues to limit PEMFC commercialization. Replacing expensive platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts with PGM-free catalysts could reduce cost, but the low active site density of PGM-free catalysts necessitates the use of thick electrodes that suffer from substantial mass transport losses. In these thick PGM-free electrodes, effective water management and oxygen transport are crucial to achieve high performance. In this work, we investigate the role of anode and cathode gas diffusion layer (GDL) configurations in controlling water management. Asymmetric GDL configurations, in which the anode GDL exhibits higher permeability than the cathode GDL, showed higher performance compared to conventional symmetric configurations. Computational modeling showed that the improved performance is mainly due to improved water management, resulting in lower liquid water saturation and faster oxygen transport in the cathode.

Synthesis of a Graphene-Encapsulated Fe3C/Fe Catalyst Supported on Sporopollenin Exine Capsules and Its Use for the Reverse Water-Gas Shift Reaction.

Project description:Bioderived materials have emerged as sustainable catalyst supports for several heterogeneous reactions owing to their naturally occurring hierarchal pore size distribution, high surface area, and thermal and chemical stability. We utilize sporopollenin exine capsules (SpECs), a carbon-rich byproduct of pollen grains, composed primarily of polymerized and cross-linked lipids, to synthesize carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles via evaporative precipitation and pyrolytic treatments. The composition and morphology of the macroparticles were influenced by the precursor iron acetate concentration. Most significantly, the formation of crystalline phases (Fe3C, α-Fe, and graphite) detected via X-ray diffraction spectroscopy showed a critical dependence on iron loading. Significantly, the characteristic morphology and structure of the SpECs were largely preserved after high-temperature pyrolysis. Analysis of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, the D and G bands from Raman spectroscopy, and the relative ratio of the C=C to C-C bonding from high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that porosity, surface area, and degree of graphitization were easily tuned by varying the Fe loading. A mechanism for the formation of crystalline phases and meso-porosity during the pyrolysis process is also proposed. SpEC-Fe10% proved to be highly active and selective for the reverse water-gas shift reaction at high temperatures (>600 °C).

Dynamic graphene filters for selective gas-water-oil separation.

Project description:Selective filtration of gas, water, and liquid or gaseous oil is essential to prevent possible environmental pollution and machine/facility malfunction in oil-based industries. Novel materials and structures able to selectively and efficiently filter liquid and vapor in various types of solutions are therefore in continuous demand. Here, we investigate selective gas-water-oil filtration using three-dimensional graphene structures. The proposed approach is based on the adjustable wettability of three-dimensional graphene foams. Three such structures are developed in this study; the first allows gas, oil, and water to pass, the second blocks water only, and the third is exclusively permeable to gas. In addition, the ability of three-dimensional graphene structures with a self-assembled monolayer to selectively filter oil is demonstrated. This methodology has numerous potential practical applications as gas, water, and/or oil filtration is an essential component of many industries.

N-doped graphene layers encapsulated NiFe alloy nanoparticles derived from MOFs with superior electrochemical performance for oxygen evolution reaction.

Project description:Water splitting, an efficient approach for hydrogen production, is often hindered by unfavorable kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In order to reduce the overpotential, noble metal oxides-based electrocatalysts like RuO2 and IrO2 are usually utilized. However, due to their scarcity, the development of cost-effective non-precious OER electrocatalysts with high efficiency and good stability is urgently required. Herein, we report a facile one-step annealing of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) strategy to synthesize N-doped graphene layers encapsulated NiFe alloy nanoparticles (NiFe@C). Through tuning the nanoparticle size and calcination temperature, NiFe@C with an average size of around 16 nm obtained at 700 °C exhibits superior OER performance with an overpotential of only 281 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and high durability. The facile synthesis method and excellent electrochemical performance show great potential of NiFe@C in replacing the precious metal-based electrocatalysts in the OER.

Hydrogenated-Graphene-Encapsulated Graphene: A Versatile Material for Device Applications.

Project description:Graphene and its heterostructures exhibit interesting electronic properties and are explored for quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) and magnetism-based device applications. In present work, we propose a heterostructure of graphene encapsulated by hydrogenated-graphene, which could be a promising candidate for a variety of device applications. We have carried out DFT calculations on this system to check its feasibility to be a versatile material. We found that electronic states of multilayer pristine graphene, especially the Dirac cone, an important feature to host QSHE, can be preserved by sandwiching it by fully hydrogenated graphene. The interference of electronic states of hydrogenated graphene was insignificant with those of graphene. States of graphene were also found to be stable upon application of an electric field up to ±2.5 V/nm. For device applications, multilayer graphene or its heterostructures are required to be deposited on a substrate, which interacts with the system opening up a gap at the Dirac cone making it less suitable for QSHE applications, and hydrogenated graphene can prevent it. Magnetization in these hydrogenated-graphene-sandwiched graphene systems may be induced by creating vacancies or distortions in hydrogenated graphene, which was found to have a minimal effect on graphene's electronic states, thus providing an additional degree of manipulation. We also performed a set of calculations to explore its applicability for detecting some molecules. Our results on trilayer graphene encapsulated by hydrogenated graphene indicate that all these observations can be generalized for systems with a larger number of graphene layers, indicating that multilayer graphene sandwiched between two hydrogenated graphene is a versatile material that can be used in QSHE and sensor devices.

Zigzag gas phases on holey adsorbed layers.

Project description:We report for the first time a zigzag-shaped gas phase at a highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite/water interface. The novel shape of the gaseous domain is triggered by the holes of the underlying solid-like layers, which are composed of air molecules. Specifically, many holes were created by heating in the thin solid-like layers, which roughened them. The gas domains that formed on these layers deformed from circular to zigzag-shaped as the contact lines expanded while avoiding the holes of the underlying layers. We explained the formation and growth processes of these gas structures in terms of thin film growth, which varies with the mobility of the constituent molecules.
