Monolayer nanosheets formed by liquid exfoliation of charge-assisted hydrogen-bonded frameworks.

ABSTRACT: Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a diverse and tunable class of materials, but their potential as free-standing two-dimensional nanomaterials has yet to be explored. Here we report the self-assembly of two layered hydrogen-bonded frameworks based on strong, charge-assisted hydrogen-bonding between carboxylate and amidinium groups. Ultrasound-assisted liquid exfoliation of both materials readily produces monolayer hydrogen-bonded organic nanosheets (HONs) with micron-sized lateral dimensions. The HONs show remarkable stability and maintain their extended crystallinity and monolayer structures even after being suspended in water at 80 °C for three days. These systems also exhibit efficient fluorescence quenching of an organic dye in organic solvents, superior to the quenching ability of the bulk frameworks. We anticipate that this approach will provide a route towards a diverse new family of molecular two-dimensional materials.

Scalable high yield exfoliation for monolayer nanosheets.

Project description:Although two-dimensional (2D) materials have grown into an extended family that accommodates hundreds of members and have demonstrated promising advantages in many fields, their practical applications are still hindered by the lack of scalable high-yield production of monolayer products. Here, we show that scalable production of monolayer nanosheets can be achieved by a facile ball-milling exfoliation method with the assistance of viscous polyethyleneimine (PEI) liquid. As a demonstration, graphite is effectively exfoliated into graphene nanosheets, achieving a high monolayer percentage of 97.9% at a yield of 78.3%. The universality of this technique is also proven by successfully exfoliating other types of representative layered materials with different structures, such as carbon nitride, covalent organic framework, zeolitic imidazolate framework and hexagonal boron nitride. This scalable exfoliation technique for monolayer nanosheets could catalyze the synthesis and industrialization of 2D nanosheet materials.

Ion polarisation-assisted hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics in liquid crystalline domains.

Project description:An alkylamide-substituted (-NHCOC10H21) hydrogen-bonded dibenzo[18]crown-6 derivative (1) was prepared to stabilise the ionic channel structure in a discotic hexagonal columnar (Colh) liquid crystal. The introduction of simple M+X- salts such as Na+PF6 - and K+I- into the ionic channel of 1 enhanced the ionic conductivity of the Colh phase of the M+·(1)·X- salts, with the highest ionic conductivity reaching ∼10-6 S cm-1 for K+·(1)·I- and Na+·(1)·PF6 - at 460 K, which was approximately 5 orders of magnitude higher than that of 1. The introduction of non-ferroelectric 1 into the ferroelectric N,N',N''-tri(tetradecyl)-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxamide (3BC) elicited a ferroelectric response from the mixed Colh phase of (3BC) x (1)1-x with x = 0.9 and 0.8. The further doping of M+X- into the ferroelectric Colh phase of (3BC)0.9(1)0.1 enhanced the ferroelectric polarisation assisted by ion displacement in the half-filled ionic channel for the vacant dibenzo[18]crown-6 of (3BC)0.9[(M+)0.5·(1)·(X-)0.5]0.1.

Bismuthene nanosheets produced by ionic liquid assisted grinding exfoliation and their use for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:We report the simple synthesis of bismuthene nanosheets (BiNS) by ionic liquid assisted grinding exfoliation, followed by size selection sequential centrifugation steps for the first time. The exfoliation process results in the formation of self-assembled spherule-like superstructures with abundant edge sites, which are able to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via a two-electron pathway, with a higher efficiency than the bulk Bismuth. We rationalize the enhanced ORR activity of the BiNS to: (i) the presence of 1 dimensional topological edge states, which provide strong conduction channels for electron hopping between the bismuth layers and (ii) the more active role of edge sites in facilitating O2 adsorption and dissociation of O-O bonds compared to the basal plane. The present study provides a pathway for employing 2D topological insulators as a new class of electrocatalysts for clean energy applications.

Biomimetic chiral hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganic frameworks.

Project description:Assembly ubiquitously occurs in nature and gives birth to numerous functional biomaterials and sophisticated organisms. In this work, chiral hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganic frameworks (HOIFs) are synthesized via biomimicking the self-assembly process from amino acids to proteins. Enjoying the homohelical configurations analogous to α-helix, the HOIFs exhibit remarkable chiroptical activity including the chiral fluorescence (glum = 1.7 × 10-3) that is untouched among the previously reported hydrogen-bonded frameworks. Benefitting from the dynamic feature of hydrogen bonding, HOIFs enable enantio-discrimination of chiral aliphatic substrates with imperceivable steric discrepancy based on fluorescent change. Moreover, the disassembled HOIFs after recognition applications are capable of being facilely regenerated and self-purified via aprotic solvent-induced reassembly, leading to at least three consecutive cycles without losing the enantioselectivity. The underlying mechanism of chirality bias is decoded by the experimental isothermal titration calorimetry together with theoretic simulation.

Hydrogen-bonded frameworks for molecular structure determination.

Project description:Single crystal X-ray diffraction is arguably the most definitive method for molecular structure determination, but the inability to grow suitable single crystals can frustrate conventional X-ray diffraction analysis. We report herein an approach to molecular structure determination that relies on a versatile toolkit of guanidinium organosulfonate hydrogen-bonded host frameworks that form crystalline inclusion compounds with target molecules in a single-step crystallization, complementing the crystalline sponge method that relies on diffusion of the target into the cages of a metal-organic framework. The peculiar properties of the host frameworks enable rapid stoichiometric inclusion of a wide range of target molecules with full occupancy, typically without disorder and accompanying solvent, affording well-refined structures. Moreover, anomalous scattering by the framework sulfur atoms enables reliable assignment of absolute configuration of stereogenic centers. An ever-expanding library of organosulfonates provides a toolkit of frameworks for capturing specific target molecules for their structure determination.

Semiconductive microporous hydrogen-bonded organophosphonic acid frameworks.

Project description:Herein, we report a semiconductive, proton-conductive, microporous hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) derived from phenylphosphonic acid and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis[p-phenylphosphonic acid] porphyrin (GTUB5). The structure of GTUB5 was characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction. A narrow band gap of 1.56 eV was extracted from a UV-Vis spectrum of pure GTUB5 crystals, in excellent agreement with the 1.65 eV band gap obtained from DFT calculations. The same band gap was also measured for GTUB5 in DMSO. The proton conductivity of GTUB5 was measured to be 3.00 × 10-6 S cm-1 at 75 °C and 75% relative humidity. The surface area was estimated to be 422 m2 g-1 from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. XRD showed that GTUB5 is thermally stable under relative humidities of up to 90% at 90 °C. These findings pave the way for a new family of organic, microporous, and semiconducting materials with high surface areas and high thermal stabilities.

Surfactant assisted exfoliation of near infrared fluorescent silicate nanosheets.

Project description:Fluorophores that emit light in the near infrared (NIR) are advantageous in photonics and imaging due to minimal light scattering, absorption, phototoxicity and autofluorescence in this spectral region. The layered silicate Egyptian blue (CaCuSi4O10) emits as a bulk material bright and stable fluorescence in the NIR and is a promising NIR fluorescent material for (bio)photonics. Here, we demonstrate a surfactant-based (mild) exfoliation procedure to produce nanosheets (EB-NS) of high monodispersity, heights down to 1 nm and diameters <20 nm in large quantities. The approach combines planetary ball milling, surfactant assisted bath sonication and centrifugation steps. It avoids the impurities that are typical for the harsh conditions of tip-sonication. Several solvents and surfactants were tested and we found the highest yield for sodium dodecyl benzyl sulfate (SDBS) and water. The NIR fluorescence emission (λem ≈ 930-940 nm) is not affected by this procedure, is extremely stable and is not affected by quenchers. This enables the use of EB-NS for macroscopic patterning/barcoding of materials in the NIR. In summary, we present a simple and mild route to NIR fluorescent nanosheets that promise high potential as NIR fluorophores for optical applications.

Electron Storage in Monolayer Tungstate Nanosheets Produced via a Scalable Exfoliation Method.

Project description:Inorganic nanosheet materials with atomic thinness have been widely studied as (photo)catalytic materials due to their unique electronic states and surface structures. One scalable and reproducible method of producing monolayer nanosheets is a top-down approach based on the exfoliation of layered parent compounds using an alkylammonium solution as a surfactant. However, H2W2O7 layered tungstates dissolve in basic aqueous solutions, making them unsuitable for the exfoliation process. This work proposes a scalable method to obtain monolayer WO3 nanosheets with a very high external field responsiveness. This work shows that H2W2O7 topochemically swells in a concentrated octylamine (C8N17NH2) aqueous solution with a concentration above the solubility of octylamine in water. Water was added for exfoliation of the liquid crystalline phase into isolated W2O72- nanosheets with octylammonium (C8N17NH3+) protection. Crystalline WO3 nanosheets on the n-Si substrate obtained with calcination exhibited electron richness in the conduction band due to static electron transfer at the interface.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks for photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide.

Project description:Photocatalysis provides a sustainable and environment-friendly strategy to produce H2O2, yet the catalytic efficiency of H2O2 overall photosynthesis (O2 + 2H2O → 2H2O2) needs to be further improved, especially in the absence of additional cocatalysts, photosensitizers and sacrificial agents. Here we find that hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks can serve as photocatalysts for H2O2 overall photosynthesis under the above-mentioned conditions. Specifically, we constructed a donor-acceptor hydrogen-bonded organic framework that exhibits a high photocatalytic activity for H2O2 overall photosynthesis, with a production rate of 681.2 μmol g-1 h-1. The control experiments and theoretical calculation revealed that the hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks with donor-acceptor structures can not only accelerate the charge separation and transfer but also optimize the reaction pathways, which significantly boosts the photocatalytic efficiency in H2O2 overall photosynthesis. This work provides insights into the design and development of efficient photocatalysts for overall H2O2 photosynthesis.

Ultrasonic Exfoliation of Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Metal-Organic Frameworks To Form Nanosheets.

Project description:The modular structure of metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs) provides a convenient route to creating two-dimensional materials with readily tuneable surface properties. Here, the liquid exfoliation of two closely related layered metal-organic frameworks functionalised with either methoxy-propyl (1) or pentyl (2) pendent groups intended to bestow either hydrophilic or hydrophobic character to the resulting nanosheets is reported. Exfoliation of the two materials in a range of different solvents highlighted significant differences in their dispersion properties, as well as their molecular and nanoscopic structures. Exchange or loss of solvent was found to occur at the labile axial position of the paddle-wheel based MONs and DFT calculations indicated that intramolecular coordination by the oxygen of the methoxy-propyl pendant groups may take place. The nanoscopic dimensions of the MONs were further tuned by varying the exfoliation conditions and through "liquid cascade centrifugation". Aqueous suspensions of the nanosheets were used as sensors to detect aromatic heterocycles with clear differences in binding behaviour observed and quantified.
