Single-molecule junctions of multinuclear organometallic wires: long-range carrier transport brought about by metal-metal interaction.

ABSTRACT: Here, we report multinuclear organometallic molecular wires having (2,5-diethynylthiophene)diyl-Ru(dppe)₂ repeating units. Despite the molecular dimensions of 2-4 nm the multinuclear wires show high conductance (up to 10^-2 to 10^-3 G ₀) at the single-molecule level with small attenuation factors (β) as revealed by STM-break junction measurements. The high performance can be attributed to the efficient energy alignment between the Fermi level of the metal electrodes and the HOMO levels of the multinuclear molecular wires as revealed by DFT-NEGF calculations. Electrochemical and DFT studies reveal that the strong Ru-Ru interaction through the bridging ligands raises the HOMO levels to access the Fermi level, leading to high conductance and small β values.

Resolving metal-molecule interfaces at single-molecule junctions.

Project description:Electronic and structural detail at the electrode-molecule interface have a significant influence on charge transport across molecular junctions. Despite the decisive role of the metal-molecule interface, a complete electronic and structural characterization of the interface remains a challenge. This is in no small part due to current experimental limitations. Here, we present a comprehensive approach to obtain a detailed description of the metal-molecule interface in single-molecule junctions, based on current-voltage (I-V) measurements. Contrary to conventional conductance studies, this I-V approach provides a correlated statistical description of both, the degree of electronic coupling across the metal-molecule interface, and the energy alignment between the conduction orbital and the Fermi level of the electrode. This exhaustive statistical approach was employed to study single-molecule junctions of 1,4-benzenediamine (BDA), 1,4-butanediamine (C4DA), and 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT). A single interfacial configuration was observed for both BDA and C4DA junctions, while three different interfacial arrangements were resolved for BDT. This multiplicity is due to different molecular adsorption sites on the Au surface namely on-top, hollow, and bridge. Furthermore, C4DA junctions present a fluctuating I-V curve arising from the greater conformational freedom of the saturated alkyl chain, in sharp contrast with the rigid aromatic backbone of both BDA and BDT.

Engineering Transport Orbitals in Single-Molecule Junctions.

Project description:Controlling charge transport through molecules is challenging because it requires engineering of the energy of molecular orbitals involved in the transport process. While side groups are central to maintaining solubility in many molecular materials, their role in modulating charge transport through single-molecule junctions has received less attention. Here, using two break-junction techniques and computational modeling, we investigate systematically the effect of electron-donating and -withdrawing side groups on the charge transport through single molecules. By characterizing the conductance and thermopower, we demonstrate that side groups can be used to manipulate energy levels of the transport orbitals. Furthermore, we develop a novel statistical approach to model quantum transport through molecular junctions. The proposed method does not treat the electrodes' chemical potential as a free parameter and leads to more robust prediction of electrical conductance as confirmed by our experiment. The new method is generic and can be used to predict the conductance of molecules.

Multinuclear Tin-Based Macrocyclic Organometallic Resist for EUV Photolithography.

Project description:We report a new photoresist based on a multinuclear tin-based macrocyclic complex and its performance for extreme UV (EUV) photolithography. The new photoresist has a trinuclear macrocyclic structure containing three salicylhydroxamic acid ligands and six Sn-CH3 bonds, which was confirmed by multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and FT-IR spectroscopies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. The resist exhibited good humidity, air, and thermal stabilities, while showing good photochemical reactivity. Photochemical cross-linking of the resist was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron and solid-state NMR spectroscopic analyses. EUV photolithography with the 44 nm-thick film on a silicon wafer revealed a line-edge-roughness (LER) of 1.1 nm in a 20 nm half-pitch pattern. The Z-factor, a metric that gauges the performance of photoresists by considering the tradeoff between resolution, LER, and sensitivity (RLS), was estimated to be 1.28 × 10-8 mJ·nm3, indicating its great performance compared to the EUV photoresists reported in the literature.

Understanding the charge transport properties of redox active metal-organic conjugated wires.

Project description:Layer-by-layer assembly of the dirhodium complex [Rh2(O2CCH3)4] (Rh2) with linear N,N'-bidentate ligands pyrazine (LS) or 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (LL) on a gold substrate has developed two series of redox active molecular wires, (Rh2LS) n @Au and (Rh2LL) n @Au (n = 1-6). By controlling the number of assembling cycles, the molecular wires in the two series vary systematically in length, as characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and atomic force microscopy. The current-voltage characteristics recorded by conductive probe atomic force microscopy indicate a mechanistic transition for charge transport from voltage-driven to electrical field-driven in wires with n = 4, irrespective of the nature and length of the wires. Whilst weak length dependence of electrical resistance is observed for both series, (Rh2LL) n @Au wires exhibit smaller distance attenuation factors (β) in both the tunneling (β = 0.044 Å-1) and hopping (β = 0.003 Å-1) regimes, although in (Rh2LS) n @Au the electronic coupling between the adjacent Rh2 centers is stronger. DFT calculations reveal that these wires have a π-conjugated molecular backbone established through π(Rh2)-π(L) orbital interactions, and (Rh2LL) n @Au has a smaller energy gap between the filled π*(Rh2) and the empty π*(L) orbitals. Thus, for (Rh2LL) n @Au, electron hopping across the bridge is facilitated by the decreased metal to ligand charge transfer gap, while in (Rh2LS) n @Au the hopping pathway is disfavored likely due to the increased Coulomb repulsion. On this basis, we propose that the super-exchange tunneling and the underlying incoherent hopping are the dominant charge transport mechanisms for shorter (n ≤ 4) and longer (n > 4) wires, respectively, and the Rh2L subunits in mixed-valence states alternately arranged along the wire serve as the hopping sites.

Protonation-Independent Charge Transport Across Diphenylamine Single-Molecule Junctions.

Project description:Amines are one of the most ubiquitous functional groups in molecular junctions; however, the exact regulation of the charge transport through the protonation state of an amine group in the junction backbone remains elusive. We address this question here by designing a diphenylamine molecular backbone and experimentally investigating how protonation of the central amine group affects the charge transport. Our ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy measurements demonstrate the protonation reaction of the diphenylamine compound in the presence of either trifluoroacetic acid or HCl, and we observe a consistent trend of a modestly increased conductance for diphenylamine in the presence of acid, indicating that a protonated amine group in a diphenylamine backbone slightly enhances the electron conduction. We further investigate the charge transport across diphenylamine under a series of applied tip bias voltages between -0.9 to 0.9 V in an electrochemical environment in the absence and presence of acid for determining the frontier molecular orbital alignment with the Fermi level and the coupling coefficient between the molecule and the electrodes. Our finding shows that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) is the dominating transport channel of the diphenylamine junction, and a modest conductance increase is an outcome of the HOMO resonance energy moving closer to the Fermi level upon protonation of the amine.

Understanding resonant charge transport through weakly coupled single-molecule junctions.

Project description:Off-resonant charge transport through molecular junctions has been extensively studied since the advent of single-molecule electronics and is now well understood within the framework of the non-interacting Landauer approach. Conversely, gaining a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the resonant transport regime has proven more elusive. Here, we study resonant charge transport through graphene-based zinc-porphyrin junctions. We experimentally demonstrate an inadequacy of non-interacting Landauer theory as well as the conventional single-mode Franck-Condon model. Instead, we model overall charge transport as a sequence of non-adiabatic electron transfers, with rates depending on both outer and inner-sphere vibrational interactions. We show that the transport properties of our molecular junctions are determined by a combination of electron-electron and electron-vibrational coupling, and are sensitive to interactions with the wider local environment. Furthermore, we assess the importance of nuclear tunnelling and examine the suitability of semi-classical Marcus theory as a description of charge transport in molecular devices.

Photo-induced carbocation-enhanced charge transport in single-molecule junctions.

Project description:We report the first example of photo-induced carbocation-enhanced charge transport in triphenylmethane junctions using the scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (STM-BJ) technique. The electrical conductance of the carbocation state is enhanced by up to 1.5 orders of magnitude compared to the initial state, with stability lasting for at least 7 days. Moreover, we can achieve light-induced reversible conductance switching with a high ON-OFF ratio in carbocation-based single-molecule junctions. Theoretical calculations reveal that the conductance increase is due to a significant decrease of the HOMO-LUMO gap and also the enhanced transmission close to the Fermi levels when the carbocation forms. Our findings encourage continued research toward developing optoelectronics and carbocation-based devices at the single-molecule level.

Charge Transport through Single-Molecule Junctions with σ-Delocalized Systems.

Project description:Single-molecule junctions, formed by a single molecule bridging a gap between two metal electrodes, are attracting attention as basic models of ultrasmall electronic devices. Although charge transport through π-conjugated molecules with π-delocalized system has been widely studied for a number of molecular junctions, there has been almost no research on charge transport through molecular junctions with a σ-delocalized orbital system. Compounds with hexa-selenium-substituted benzene form a σ-delocalized orbital system on the periphery of the benzene ring. In this study, we fabricated single-molecule junctions with the σ-delocalized orbital systems arising from lone-pair interactions of selenium atoms and clarified their electronic properties using the break-junction method. The single-molecule junctions with the σ-orbital systems show efficient charge transport properties and can be one of the alternatives to those with conventional π-orbital systems as minute electronic conductors.

Long-Range Hot-Carrier Transport in Topologically Connected HgTe Quantum Dots.

Project description:The utilization of hot carriers as a means to surpass the Shockley-Queasier limit represents a promising strategy for advancing highly efficient photovoltaic devices. Quantum dots, owing to their discrete energy states and limited multi-phonon cooling process, are regarded as one of the most promising materials. However, in practical implementations, the presence of numerous defects and discontinuities in colloidal quantum dot (CQD) films significantly curtails the transport distance of hot carriers. In this study, the harnessing of excess energies from hot-carriers is successfully demonstrated and a world-record carrier diffusion length of 15 µm is observed for the first time in colloidal systems, surpassing existing hot-carrier materials by more than tenfold. The observed phenomenon is attributed to the specifically designed honeycomb-like topological structures in a HgTe CQD superlattice, with its long-range periodicity confirmed by High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy(HR-TEM), Selected Area Electron Diffraction(SAED) patterns, and low-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD). In such a superlattice, nonlocal hot carrier transport is supported by three unique physical properties: the wavelength-independent responsivity, linear output characteristics and microsecond fast photoresponse. These findings underscore the potential of HgTe CQD superlattices as a feasible approach for efficient hot carrier collection, thereby paving the way for practical applications in highly sensitive photodetection and solar energy harvesting.

Charge transport through single-molecule bilayer-graphene junctions with atomic thickness.

Project description:The van der Waals interactions (vdW) between π-conjugated molecules offer new opportunities for fabricating heterojunction-based devices and investigating charge transport in heterojunctions with atomic thickness. In this work, we fabricate sandwiched single-molecule bilayer-graphene junctions via vdW interactions and characterize their electrical transport properties by employing the cross-plane break junction (XPBJ) technique. The experimental results show that the cross-plane charge transport through single-molecule junctions is determined by the size and layer number of molecular graphene in these junctions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the charge transport through molecular graphene in these molecular junctions is sensitive to the angles between the graphene flake and peripheral mesityl groups, and those rotated groups can be used to tune the electrical conductance. This study provides new insight into cross-plane charge transport in atomically thin junctions and highlights the role of through-space interactions in vdW heterojunctions at the molecular scale.
