Nanofiltration membrane for bio-separation: Process-oriented materials innovation.

ABSTRACT: Nanofiltration (NF) with advantages of high efficiency and low-cost has attracted increasing attentions in bio-separation. However, the large-scale application is limited by the inferior molecular selectivity, low chemical stability and serious membrane fouling. Many efforts, thus, have been devoted in NF materials design for specific applications to enhance the separation efficiency of bio-products and increase membrane life-time, as well as reduce the operating cost. This review summarized the recent progress of NF applications in bio-separation, discussed various demands for NF membrane in the bio-products purification and corresponding material innovations, finally proposed several practical suggestions for future research, which provided directions and guidance toward further product development and process industrialization.

γ-Valerolactone as Bio-Based Solvent for Nanofiltration Membrane Preparation.

Project description:γ-Valerolactone (GVL) was selected as a renewable green solvent to prepare membranes via the process of phase inversion. Water and ethanol were screened as sustainable non-solvents to prepare membranes for nanofiltration (NF). Scanning electron microscopy was applied to check the membrane morphology, while aqueous rose Bengal (RB) and magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) feed solutions were used to screen performance. Cellulose acetate (CA), polyimide (PI), cellulose triacetate (CTA), polyethersulfone (PES) and polysulfone (PSU) membranes were fine-tuned as materials for preparation of NF-membranes, either by selecting a suitable non-solvent for phase inversion or by increasing the polymer concentration in the casting solution. The best membranes were prepared with CTA in GVL using water as non-solvent: with increasing CTA concentration (10 wt% to 17.5 wt%) in the casting solution, permeance decreased from 15.9 to 5.5 L/m2·h·bar while RB rejection remained higher than 94%. The polymer solubilities in GVL were rationalized using Hansen solubility parameters, while membrane performances and morphologies were linked to viscosity measurements and cloudpoint determination of the casting solutions to better understand the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the phase inversion process.

Positively charged nanofiltration membrane synthesis, transport models, and lanthanides separation.

Project description:The design and understanding of rejection mechanisms for both positively and negatively charged nanofiltration (NF) membranes are needed for the development of highly selective separation of multivalent ions. In this study, positively charged nanofiltration membranes were created via an addition of commercially available polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) by conventional interfacial polymerization technique. Demonstration of real increase in surface zeta potential, along with other characterization methods, confirmed the addition of weak basic functional groups from PAH. Both positively and negatively charged NF membranes were tested for evaluating their potential as a technology for the recovery or separation of lanthanide cations (neodymium and lanthanum chloride as model salts) from aqueous sources. Particularly, the NF membranes with added PAH performed high and stable lanthanides retentions, with values around 99.3% in mixtures with high ionic strength (100 mM, equivalent to ~6,000 ppm), 99.3% rejection at 85% water recovery (and high Na+/La3+ selectivity, with 0% Na+ rejection starting at 65% recovery), and both constant lanthanum rejection and permeate flux at even pH 2.7. Donnan steric pore model with dielectric exclusion elucidated the transport mechanism of lanthanides and sodium, proving the potential of high selective separation at low permeate fluxes using positively charged NF membranes.

Removal of Enantiomeric Ibuprofen in a Nanofiltration Membrane Process.

Project description:A study of the behavior of R- and S-enantiomers of ibuprofen (R-IBU and S-IBU) in aqueous solution by nanofiltration (NF) membranes revealed that up to 23% of the pharmaceutical was adsorbed onto the stainless steel equipment of a flat-sheet experimental unit. Mass balances disclosed that IBU's S-enantiomer was primarily responsible for the adsorption onto the equipment. Additional IBU adsorption was also experienced on the NF membrane coupons, verified by increased contact angle measurements on the surfaces. The IBU-equipment adsorptive relationship with and without the membrane coupon were best described by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. At a feed water pH of 4.0 units and racemic µg/L IBU concentrations, NF removal ranged from 34.5% to 49.5%. The rejection of S-IBU was consistently greater than the R-enantiomer. Adsorption onto the surfaces influenced NF rejection by 18.9% to 27.3%. The removal of IBU displayed a direct relationship with an increase in feed water pH. Conversely, the adsorption of IBU exhibited an indirect relationship with an increase in feed water pH.

A Case Study on Recycling Industrial Wastewater with Nanofiltration Membrane Separation Technology.

Project description:As pressure on water resources intensifies and stringent regulations for groundwater and surface water are enacted, wastewater recycling has emerged as a key research objective for many enterprises. In this study, based on the actual wastewater discharged from Eternal Electronic (Suzhou, China) Co., Ltd., the performance differences in different membrane materials in treating this wastewater were analyzed and compared. The NF90 membrane was ultimately selected as the most suitable choice for treating this wastewater with optimal operating conditions of 150 psi, 25 °C, and 1 L/min, respectively. All the indices of wastewater treatment can satisfy the standard of circulating cooling water. In addition, this work is closely combined with the practical applications by using an HCl solution (pH = 3-4) to clean the fouled membranes, thus effectively solving the membrane fouling in the treatment process. This approach not only satisfies the environmental management requirements of enterprises but also provides valuable insights for similar wastewater treatment projects.

Interfacial Polymerization on Polyethersulfone Ultrafiltration Membrane to Prepare Nanofiltration Layers for Dye Separation.

Project description:Nanofiltration membranes are of great significance to the treatment of dye wastewater. Interfacial polymerization is a widely used method to fabricate nanofiltration membranes. In this study, the interaction of tannic acid-assisted polyethylene polyamine (PEPA) with terephthalaldehyde (TPAL) was performed on PES ultrafiltration membranes using novel nitrogen-rich amine monomers and relatively less reactive aldehyde-based monomers. A new nanofiltration membrane ((T-P-T)/PES) was prepared by interfacial polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the elemental composition, bonding state, and surface morphology of the membrane surface. The effects of the PEPA deposition time, TPAL concentration, interfacial reaction time, and curing time on the nanofiltration layer were investigated. The modified membrane, prepared under optimal conditions, showed strong dye separation ability. The permeation of the modified membrane could reach 68.68 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, and the rejection of various dyes was above 99%. In addition, the (T-P-T)/PES membrane showed good stability during long-term dye separation.

Optimization of Nanofiltration Hollow Fiber Membrane Fabrication Process Based on Response Surface Method.

Project description:Layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technology has become a new research hotspot in the fabrication of nanofiltration membranes in recent years. However, there is a lack of a systematic approach for the assessment of influencing factors during the membrane fabrication process. In this study, the process optimization of LBL deposition was performed by a two-step statistical method. The multiple linear regression was performed on the results of single-factor experiments to determine the major influencing factors on membrane performance, including the concentration of Poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), glutaraldehyde, and the NaCl concentration in PAH solution. The Box-Behnken response surface method was then used to analyze the interactions between the selected factors, while their correlation with the membrane performance was obtained by polynomial fitting. The R2 value of the regression models (0.97 and 0.94) was in good agreement with the adjusted R2 value (0.93 and 0.86), indicating that the quadratic response models were adequate enough to predict the membrane performance. The optimal process parameters were finally determined through dual-response surface analysis to achieve both high membrane permeability of 14.3 LMH·MPa-1 and MgSO4 rejection rate of 90.22%.

Polyamide nanofiltration membrane with highly uniform sub-nanometre pores for sub-1 A precision separation.

Project description:Separating molecules or ions with sub-Angstrom scale precision is important but technically challenging. Achieving such a precise separation using membranes requires Angstrom scale pores with a high level of pore size uniformity. Herein, we demonstrate that precise solute-solute separation can be achieved using polyamide membranes formed via surfactant-assembly regulated interfacial polymerization (SARIP). The dynamic, self-assembled network of surfactants facilitates faster and more homogeneous diffusion of amine monomers across the water/hexane interface during interfacial polymerization, thereby forming a polyamide active layer with more uniform sub-nanometre pores compared to those formed via conventional interfacial polymerization. The polyamide membrane formed by SARIP exhibits highly size-dependent sieving of solutes, yielding a step-wise transition from low rejection to near-perfect rejection over a solute size range smaller than half Angstrom. SARIP represents an approach for the scalable fabrication of ultra-selective membranes with uniform nanopores for precise separation of ions and small solutes.

Carbon nanotube supported oriented metal organic framework membrane for effective ethylene/ethane separation.

Project description:Zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) is effective for C3H6/C3H8 separation because of the "sieving effect" of a six-membered (6-M) window. Here, we demonstrate that ZIF-8 is a versatile material that could effectively separate C2H4 from C2H6 via its 4-M window along the <100> direction. We established a facile and environmentally friendly carbon nanotube (CNT)-induced oriented membrane (CNT-OM) approach to fabricate a {100}-oriented ZIF-8 membrane (100-M). In this approach, 2-methyimidazole was anchored onto the CNT surface followed by 3-hour in situ growth in aqueous solution at room temperature. The obtained 100-M, whose 4-M window is aligned along the transport pathway, showed ~3 times higher C2H4/C2H6 selectivity than a randomly oriented membrane. Thus, this work demonstrates that the membrane orientation plays an important role in tuning selectivity toward different gas pairs. Furthermore, 100-M exhibited excellent mechanical stability that could sustain the separation performance after bending at a curvature of ~109 m-1.

Process-Oriented Review of Bacterial Quorum Quenching for Membrane Biofouling Mitigation in Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs).

Project description:Quorum Quenching (QQ) has been developed over the last few years to overcome practical issues related to membrane biofouling, which is currently the major difficulty thwarting the extensive development of membrane bioreactors (MBRs). QQ is the disruption of Quorum Sensing (QS), cell-to-cell communication enabling the bacteria to harmonize their behavior. The production of biofilm, which is recognized as a major part of the biocake formed on a membrane surface, and which leads to biofouling, has been found to be one of the bacterial behaviors controlled by QS. Since the enzymatic disruption of QS was reported to be efficient as a membrane biofouling mitigation technique in MBRs, the application of QQ to lab-scale MBRs has been the subject of much research using different approaches under different operating conditions. This paper gives an overview of the effectiveness of QQ in mitigating membrane biofouling in MBRs. It is based on the results of previous studies, using two microbial strains, Rhodococcus sp. BH4 and Pseudomonas sp. 1A1. The effect of bacterial QQ on the physical phenomena of the MBR process is analyzed, adopting an original multi-scale approach. Finally, the potential influence of the MBR operating conditions on QQ effectiveness is discussed.

Process Optimization of Para-xylene Crystallization Separation Process via Morphology Approach, Multi-dimensional Population Balance Equation, and Equation-Oriented Models.

Project description:An activity coefficient-based model was proposed to predict pertinent saturated concentrations in organic solid-liquid equilibrium, and the binary parameters of xylene mixtures were experimentally obtained. Also, a novel monocular 3D reconstruction technique was developed to measure crystal size and applied to derive the kinetics of nucleation and growth of para-xylene crystals. Subsequently, a multi-dimensional population balance equation was used to predict the particle size distribution in the crystallizer and an algorithm was designed to simulate and optimize the economic benefit of the crystallization separation process. Consequently, it became possible to predict the optimal coolant flowrate and inlet temperature, as well as the feed flowrate for a crystallization process with given operating conditions and device parameters.
