Project description:The Zimbardo time perspective inventory (ZTPI) is the most well-known and widely used measure of time perspective. However, the assessment of the psychometric properties of the ZTPI reveals several problems, and various short versions have been proposed to overcome these problems. In a large Italian sample (N = 2295; 1326 women; age range 18-74 years), the present study aimed to test a short version of the ZTPI (ZTPI-16) defined by high frequency items (i.e., "good" items), reviewing the items composition of previous alternative short versions of the scale. Beyond the assessment of the factorial structure of this new short ZTPI, we compared the ZTPI-16 to the original ZTPI (ZTPI-56) and another already validated version of the ZTPI in the Italian context, such as Zimbardo's Stanford time perspective inventory (ZTPI-22), the short version of the ZTPI (ZTPI-30), and the ZTPI-36 proposed analyzing the data from 24 countries. The results confirmed the psychometric problems of the ZTPI-56, whereas the ZTPI-16 reported adequate structural validity and reliability. Moderate-to-strong correlations between same temporal subscales in different ZTPI versions were also found. These data suggest that the review of the "good" items is a new direction in the development of ZTPI versions with good psychometric properties and comparable data among cultures.

Project description:IntroductionThe recent advances of large language models (LLMs) have opened a wide range of opportunities, but at the same time, they pose numerous challenges and questions that research needs to answer. One of the main challenges are the quality and correctness of the output of LLMs as well as the overreliance of students on the output without critically reflecting on it. This poses the question of the quality of the output of LLMs in educational tasks and what students and teachers need to consider when using LLMs for creating educational items. In this work, we focus on the quality and characteristics of conceptual items developed using ChatGPT without user-generated improvements.MethodsFor this purpose, we optimized prompts and created 30 conceptual items in kinematics, which is a standard topic in high-school level physics. The items were rated by two independent experts. Those 15 items that received the highest rating were included in a conceptual survey. The dimensions were designed to align with the ones in the most commonly used concept inventory, the Force Concept Inventory (FCI). We administered the designed items together with the FCI to 172 first-year university students. The results show that ChatGPT items have a medium difficulty and discriminatory index but they overall exhibit a slightly lower average values as the FCI. Moreover, a confirmatory factor analysis confirmed a three factor model that is closely aligned with a previously suggested expert model.Results and discussionIn this way, after careful prompt engineering, thorough analysis and selection of fully automatically generated items by ChatGPT, we were able to create concept items that had only a slightly lower quality than carefully human-generated concept items. The procedures to create and select such a high-quality set of items that is fully automatically generated require large efforts and point towards cognitive demands of teachers when using LLMs to create items. Moreover, the results demonstrate that human oversight or student interviews are necessary when creating one-dimensional assessments and distractors that are closely aligned with students' difficulties.

Project description:ObjectivesThe aim of this work is to explore the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) using network analysis in a dataset of 942 university students from the French-speaking part of Belgium.MethodsWe estimated an Ising Model for the forty items in the questionnaire and explored item interconnectedness with strength centrality. We provide in the supplementary materials the dataset used for the analyses as well as the full code to ensure the reproducibility of our results.ResultsThe NPI is presented as an overall positively connected network with items from entitlement, authority and superiority reporting the highest centrality estimates.ConclusionsNetwork analysis highlights new properties of items from the NPI. Future studies should endeavor to replicate our findings in other samples, both clinical and non-clinical.

Project description:In recent times, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been considered one of the major causes of liver disease across the world. NAFLD is defined as the deposition of triglycerides in the liver and is associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance (IR), fatty liver, hepatocyte injury, unbalanced proinflammatory cytokines, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, liver inflammation, and fibrosis are the main pathogenesis in NAFLD. Recent studies suggest that the action of intestinal microbiota through chronic inflammation, increased intestinal permeability, and energy uptake plays a vital role in NAFLD. Moreover, polycystic ovarian syndrome also causes NAFLD development through IR. Age, gender, race, ethnicity, sleep, diet, sedentary lifestyle, and genetic and epigenetic pathways are some contributing factors of NAFLD that can exacerbate the risk of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and eventually lead to death. NAFLD has various presentations, including fatigue, unexplained weight loss, bloating, upper abdominal pain, decreased appetite, headache, anxiety, poor sleep, increased thirst, palpitation, and a feeling of warmth. Some studies have shown that NAFLD with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has poor outcomes. The gold standard for NAFLD diagnosis is liver biopsy. Other diagnostic tools are imaging tests, serum biomarkers, microbiota markers, and tests for extrahepatic complications. There are no specific treatments for NAFLD. Therefore, the main concern for NAFLD is treating the comorbid conditions such as anti-diabetic agents for type 2 diabetes mellitus, statins to reduce HCC progression, antioxidants to prevent hepatocellular damage, and bariatric surgery for patients with a BMI of >40 kg/m2 and >35 kg/m2 with comorbidities. Lifestyle and dietary changes are considered preventive strategies against NAFLD advancement. Inadequate treatment of NAFLD further leads to cardiac consequences, sleep apnea, chronic kidney disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. In this systematic review, we have briefly discussed the risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical features, and numerous consequences of NAFLD. We have also reviewed various guidelines for NAFLD diagnosis along with existing therapeutic strategies for the management and prevention of the disease.

Project description:BackgroundRetained surgical items (RSI) are preventable error events. Interest in reducing RSI is increasing globally because of increasing demand for safe surgery. While research of interventions to prevent RSI have been reported, no rigorous analysis of the type and effectiveness of interventions exists. This systematic review examines (1) what types of intervention have been implemented to prevent RSI; and (2) what is the effectiveness of those interventions.MethodsWe performed a systematic review of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, Mednar, and OpenGrey databases. Two reviewers independently screened a total of 1,792 titles and abstracts, and reviewed 87 full-text articles, resulting in 17 articles in the final analysis. Study characteristics included qualitative and quantitative studies that examined the effectiveness of RSI prevention interventions for adult patients who undergo open surgery. The primary outcome was RSI and related error events.ResultsFour studies and 13 quality improvement projects described RSI interventions categorized into four groups: (1) technology-based, (2) communication-based, (3) practice- or guideline-based, (4) interventions that fell into more than one category. Following guidance in the Quality Improvement minimum quality criteria set, the quality of all studies ranged from poor to fair. Heterogeneity in the interventions used and variable study quality limit our confidence in the interventions' ability to reduce RSI.ConclusionSince technology-based interventions may not be financially feasible in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), in those settings interventions that target the social system may be more appropriate. Rigorous methods to investigate local contexts and build knowledge are needed so that interventions to prevent RSI have a greater likelihood of success.

Project description:WM164, a human melanoma line, was a gift from Dr M. Herlyn (Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, PA, USA). The cells were cultured using DMEM media supplemented with 10% serum (fetal bovine serum while growing cells and charcoal-treated serum during incubation with vitamin D compounds), 1% antibiotics and 5 g/mL insulin (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA). Cells were cultured in 75 cm2 plastic bottles (TPP–Techno Plastic Products AG, Trasadingen, Switzerland) with a filter in an incubator at 37 C with 5% CO2. CRISPR/Cas Knock out of the VDR. The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) genetic engineering method was carried out to knock out VDR expression in the WM164 cell line as described in (Cancers 2021, 13, 3111. https://doi.org/10.3390/cancers13133111). The resulting cells with the VDR gene knocked out are designated as WM164 VDR KO, and the cells transduced with an “empty” lentivirus served as a control (WM164 scramble). VDR expression was checked for scramble and VDR KO lines before experiments were performed and further every 4 months after lentivirus treatment to ensure that VDR was not expressed in the WM164 KO. Sources of Vitamin D3 Compounds: Both 1,25(OH)2D3 and 25(OH)D3 were purchased from Sigma. 1,20(OH)2D3 and 20(OH)D3 were chemically synthesized. RNA SEQ: VDR-KO or scramble WM164 cells were plated onto 100 mm2 Petri dishes and treated with 1,25(OH)2D3, 25(OH)D3, 20(OH)D3, 1,20(OH)2D3 or ethanol (control) in triplicates. Cells were incubated in 10% charcoal-treated serum for 24 h. Cells were further harvested and RNA isolated using Absolutly RNA Miniprep Kit (Stratagen) . Approximately 120 ng/ul of each sample was sent for RNAseq analysis. BGI@CHOP genomics company sequenced the samples on Illumina HiSeq TM, analyzed, and sent us the results.

Project description:BackgroundSelf-perceived temporal perspectives has been shown to vary across cultures. Although cross-cultural differences may be blurred by the globalization, accelerated pace-of-life worldwide and spread of multitasking; the way Arab individuals deal with time has its specificities. However, research in this area is scant in the Arab world. One of the main reasons for this scarcity of research is the lack of psychometrically sound and convenient-to-use measures. We aimed to examine the psychometric properties of an Arabic translation of the briefest version of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZPTI-15).MethodsA sample of community Arabic-speaking Adults from Lebanon (N = 423, 68.6% females, mean age 29.19 ± 12.54 years) were administered the Arabic ZPTI-15. The forward and backward translation method was adopted.ResultsConfirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) revealed that the five-factor model exhibited a good fit to the data. The five ZTPI-15 subscales yielded a McDonald's omega ranging from 0.43 to 0.84. Multi-group CFA ascertained the invariance of the Arabic ZTPI-15 across gender at the configural, metric, and scalar levels. Our findings support divergent validity of the scale by showing positive correlations between past negative, present fatalistic, present hedonistic dimensions, and psychological distress; as well as negative correlations between past positive, future focused dimensions, and distress.ConclusionThe Arabic ZTPI-15 is easy-to-use, valid, reliable, and will hopefully enable the conduction of future research in the field to purposively provide comprehensive insight into the time perspective patterns and correlates in Arab countries, and the broad Arabic-speaking community globally.

Project description:BackgroundFinding duplicates is an important phase of systematic review. However, no consensus regarding the methods to find duplicates has been provided. This study aims to describe a pragmatic strategy of combining auto- and hand-searching duplicates in systematic review and to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of duplicates.Methods and findingsLiteratures regarding portal vein thrombosis (PVT) and Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) were searched by the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane library databases. Duplicates included one index paper and one or more redundant papers. They were divided into type-I (duplicates among different databases) and type-II (duplicate publications in different journals/issues) duplicates. For type-I duplicates, reference items were further compared between index and redundant papers. Of 10936 papers regarding PVT, 2399 and 1307 were identified as auto- and hand-searched duplicates, respectively. The prevalence of auto- and hand-searched redundant papers was 11.0% (1201/10936) and 6.1% (665/10936), respectively. They included 3431 type-I and 275 type-II duplicates. Of 11403 papers regarding BCS, 3275 and 2064 were identified as auto- and hand-searched duplicates, respectively. The prevalence of auto- and hand-searched redundant papers was 14.4% (1640/11403) and 9.1% (1039/11403), respectively. They included 5053 type-I and 286 type-II duplicates. Most of type-I duplicates were identified by auto-searching method (69.5%, 2385/3431 in PVT literatures; 64.6%, 3263/5053 in BCS literatures). Nearly all type-II duplicates were identified by hand-searching method (94.9%, 261/275 in PVT literatures; 95.8%, 274/286 in BCS literatures). Compared with those identified by auto-searching method, type-I duplicates identified by hand-searching method had a significantly higher prevalence of wrong items (47/2385 versus 498/1046, p<0.0001 in PVT literatures; 30/3263 versus 778/1790, p<0.0001 in BCS literatures). Most of wrong items originated from EMBASE database.ConclusionGiven the inadequacy of a single strategy of auto-searching method, a combined strategy of auto- and hand-searching methods should be employed to find duplicates in systematic review.

Project description:Theory of mind (TOM), the ability to infer mental states to self and others, has been a pervasive research theme across many disciplines including developmental, educational, neuro-, and social psychology, social neuroscience and speech therapy. TOM abilities have been consistently linked to markers of social adaptation and have been shown to be affected in a broad range of clinical conditions. Despite the wealth and breadth of research dedicated to TOM, identifying appropriate assessment tools for young children remains challenging. This systematic review presents an inventory of TOM measures for children aged 0-5 years and provides details on their content and characteristics. Electronic databases (1983-2019) and 9 test publisher catalogs were systematically reviewed. In total, 220 measures, identified within 830 studies, were found to assess the understanding of seven categories of mental states and social situations: emotions, desires, intentions, percepts, knowledge, beliefs and mentalistic understanding of non-literal communication, and pertained to 39 types of TOM sub-abilities. Information on the measures' mode of presentation, number of items, scoring options, and target populations were extracted, and psychometric details are listed in summary tables. The results of the systematic review are summarized in a visual framework "Abilities in Theory of Mind Space" (ATOMS) which provides a new taxonomy of TOM sub-domains. This review highlights the remarkable variety of measures that have been created to assess TOM, but also the numerous methodological and psychometric challenges associated with developing and choosing appropriate measures, including issues related to the limited range of sub-abilities targeted, lack of standardization across studies and paucity of psychometric information provided.

Project description:IntroductionMachine learning methods in sellar region diseases present a particular challenge because of the complexity and the necessity for reproducibility. This systematic review aims to compile the current literature on sellar region diseases that utilized machine learning methods and to propose a quality assessment tool and reporting checklist for future studies.MethodsPubMed and Web of Science were searched to identify relevant studies. The quality assessment included five categories: unmet needs, reproducibility, robustness, generalizability and clinical significance.ResultsSeventeen studies were included with the diagnosis of general pituitary neoplasms, acromegaly, Cushing's disease, craniopharyngioma and growth hormone deficiency. 87.5% of the studies arbitrarily chose one or two machine learning models. One study chose ensemble models, and one study compared several models. 43.8% of studies did not provide the platform for model training, and roughly half did not offer parameters or hyperparameters. 62.5% of the studies provided a valid method to avoid over-fitting, but only five reported variations in the validation statistics. Only one study validated the algorithm in a different external database. Four studies reported how to interpret the predictors, and most studies (68.8%) suggested possible clinical applications of the developed algorithm. The workflow of a machine-learning study and the recommended reporting items were also provided based on the results.ConclusionsMachine learning methods were used to predict diagnosis and posttreatment outcomes in sellar region diseases. Though most studies had substantial unmet need and proposed possible clinical application, replicability, robustness and generalizability were major limits in current studies.
