Two new species of Otoba (Myristicaceae) from Colombia.

ABSTRACT: Otoba is the third largest genus of Myristicaceae in the Neotropics with 12 species, nine of them native to Colombia. Two new species from the department of Antioquia, O. scottmorii sp. nov. and O. squamosa sp. nov., are described and illustrated. Otoba scottmorii occurs in humid, lowland forests, while O. squamosa occurs in premontane forest. Previously, Otoba scottmorii was confused with O. acuminata (which here is considered restricted to Costa Rica and Panama), while O. squamosa was confused with O. gordoniifolia. The similarities and differences between these and other species are discussed.

Project description:With about 70 species Virola, is the largest genus of Myristicaceae in the Neotropics, the genus ranked in the top ten genera of abundance across Amazonia. Ten new species are proposed in this striking genus, which are described based on morphology, and are illustrated. The new species were discovered thanks to herbarium specimens collected mainly in the 1980s and 1990s when field documentations were more active. The new species come from Colombia (V.calimensis sp. nov., V.cogolloi sp. nov., V.excisa sp. nov., V.tuckerae sp. nov.), Ecuador (V.alvaroperezii sp. nov., V.bombuscaroensis sp. nov., V.calimensis, V.excisa, V.yasuniana sp. nov.), Peru (V.aguarunana sp. nov., V.cumala sp. nov., V.excisa, V.parkeri sp. nov.), and Brazil (V.excisa, V.yasuniana). Additionally, a lectotype is designated for V.macrocarpa, a name used to identify some specimens of the new species here described, and V.kwatae is reported for the first time for Brazil. We provide a comparation table between the new species and the species that is morphologically close to it, a preliminary list of species for the genus, and notes of how the new species were treated in floras, checklists, or collections that need more study and herbarium specimens.

A new tree species of Compsoneura (Myristicaceae) from the Andean forests on the Eastern Cordillera Range, Colombia.

Project description:Compsoneuracrassitepala, a new species of Myristicaceae is described, illustrated and its morphological relationships with related species are discussed. This new species is found in Andean forests between 1400 and 1900 m a.s.l., located in the mountainous area of the Magdalena River Basin, Department of Boyacá, Colombia. Compsoneuracrassitepala closely resembles Compsoneuralapidiflora in having a thick perianth in pistillate flowers. However, it differs by its leaves, which exhibit weak and partially brochidodromous venation with dendritic trichomes featuring a single axis on the underside. Additionally, it has floral characteristics such as a zig-zag pattern in the rachis direction of inflorescence and unusually thick, fleshy tepals in staminate flowers. Moreover, C.crassitepala is a remarkable species recorded at higher altitudes in Colombia, in an otherwise predominantly lowland forests genus (below 1550 m). A taxonomic key for the identification of the species of the genus is provided.

A taxonomic synopsis of Virola (Myristicaceae) in Mesoamerica, including six new species.

Project description:A taxonomic synopsis of Virola (Myristicaceae) is presented for Mesoamerica. Fourteen species are recognised, amongst them six are described and published as new, based on morphology: V. allenii D.Santam. & Aguilar, sp. nov. from Costa Rica, V. otobifolia D.Santam., sp. nov. from Panama and V. amistadensis D.Santam., sp. nov., V. chrysocarpa D.Santam. & Aguilar, sp. nov., V. fosteri D.Santam., sp. nov. and V. montana D.Santam., sp. nov. from both Costa Rica and Panama. Additionally, a lectotype is designated for V. koschnyi, accompanied by an epitype in view of the fragmentary material. Finally, we recognise V. laevigata and V. nobilis as morphologically distinct species, though these are frequently considered synonymys of V. guatemalensis and V. surinamensis, respectively. Of the fourteen accepted species, twelve of them are endemic to Mesoamerica, while the remaining two species (V. elongata and V. sebifera) extend into South America. Illustrations, species diagnoses and distribution maps for each species are provided, as is an identification key to all species.

Two new species of Pseudopimelodus Bleeker, 1858 (Siluriformes: Pseudopimelodidae) from the Magdalena Basin, Colombia.

Project description:The family Pseudopimelodidae is widely distributed in South America and includes 51 described species organized in seven genera. Only two of four species of the genus Pseudopimelodus have been recorded for the trans-Andean basins of Colombia, Pseudopimelodus bufonius and P. schultzi, whose similarity in external morphology make their identification difficult. We performed a phylogenetic analysis using a fragment of the Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit 1 gene (COI), and analyzed osteological and traditional morphometric characters to study Pseudopimelodus from the Colombian trans-Andean region. Results provided strong support for two clades phylogenetically related to Pseudopimelodus, that showed clear-cut molecular, osteological, and morphometric differences from previously described bumblebee catfishes. Based on these results, we describe two Pseudopimelodus species from the Magdalena-Cauca River Basin: P. magnus sp. nov. with 43-44 vertebrae, dorsal-fin spine with serrations on its anterior margin; lateral margin of transverse process of the fourth vertebra of the Weberian complex forming an acute angle in ventral view and P. atricaudus sp. nov. with 39 vertebrae, dorsal-fin spine smooth on its anterior margin and a dark, vertical band covering 3/4 of the caudal fin with base of rays and tip of caudal-fin lobes hyaline.

Two new species of Chlorospatha section Orientales (Araceae) from western Andes in Colombia.

Project description:Two new species of Chlorospatha (section Orientales) from the western slope of the Cordillera Occidental in the departments of Valle del Cauca and Choco (Colombia) are described here. The new species represent the first records of section Orientales for Colombia, which was previously known only from the eastern Andes in Ecuador. The two new species are similar to C. longipoda, C. hannoniae and C. boosii. Chlorospatha minima sp. nov. is differentiated by its small overall size (less than 30 cm tall), blade strongly inequilateral with smooth adaxial surface, and spadix less than 2.2 cm long. Chlorospatha silverstonei sp. nov. is differentiated by its large overall size (30-60 cm tall), 1-3 leaves per plant, and quilted adaxial blade surface.

A new species of Espeletiopsis (Millerieae, Asteraceae) from Colombia.

Project description:A new species of Espeletiopsis was found in two small páramos of Norte de Santander, Colombia. The species is named Espeletiopsis diazii honoring the contributions of Santiago Díaz-Piedrahita in recognition of his vast knowledge of the Compositae in Colombia. This is a very distinctive species, markedly different from most of the Espeletiopsis present in Colombia. The new species is closely related to Espeletiopsis caldasii and Espeletiopsis santanderensis, but differs in having (1-)4-6(-7) capitula, with very short peduncles, and capitula arranged in a compact or densely glomerate cyme. With a total distribution area of less than 75 km(2), this species is probably critically endangered or imperiled.

Telipogon diabolicus (Orchidaceae, Oncidiinae), a new species from southern Colombia.

Project description:A new species of the orchid genus Telipogon, Telipogon diabolicus, is described and illustrated. The information about its habitat is provided. The novelty resembles Telipogon tabanensis and Telipogon guacamayensis and it is characterized by the translucent flowers, the glabrous, distinctly clawed petals, the transversely elliptic lip, and the gynostemium ornamented with long setose hairs on both sides and shorter hairs at the apex.

A new species and new records of Solanum (Solanaceae) from Colombia.

Project description:We describe a new species of the Geminata clade of Solanum from Colombia and provide new distributional records for two additional Solanum species, recorded here for the first time in Colombia. Solanumbohsii J.D. Tovar, sp. nov. is morphologically similar to S.chlamydogynum Bitter from Venezuela of the Solanumsessile species group (Geminata clade). These two species can be distinguished by trichome morphology, as well as colour and density of the indumentum. In addition, we report new range expansions into Colombia for two species: S.tanysepalum S.Knapp (Geminata clade) known previously only from Venezuela and S.verecundum M.Nee (Brevantherum clade) from Ecuador and Peru.

Three new species of the genus Ripipteryx from Colombia (Orthoptera, Ripipterygidae).

Project description:Three new species of Ripipteryx Newman (Orthoptera: Tridactyloidea: Ripipterygidae) are described from Colombia; namely Ripipteryxdiegoi sp. n. (Forceps Group) and Ripipteryxguacharoensis sp. n. (Marginipennis Group) from Parque Nacional Natural Cueva de los Guacharos in Huila, and Ripipteryxgorgonaensis sp. n. (Crassicornis Group) from Parque Nacional Natural Gorgona in Cauca. Ripipteryxdiegoi sp. n. is characterized by the antennae black with white spots on flagellomeres 3-7, male subgenital plate with median ridge forming a bilobed setose process, epiproct produced laterally near its base and phallic complex with virga thickened distally and not reaching beyond the membrane. Ripipteryxguacharoensis sp. n. is characterized by the antennae thick with white spots present dorsally on flagellomeres 1-4 and 8, epiproct narrow and triangular, uncus reduced and lacking a distal hook, phallic complex with a concave ventral plate and a dorsal elevation in the middle extended to the virga, and the virga itself with two small projections basally. Ripipteryxgorgonaensis sp. n. is characterized by the epiproct with a lateral notch, antennae with a white dorsal spot on flagellomere 1 and flagellomeres 4-7 entirely white. The antennal color pattern of Ripipteryxgorgonaensis sp. n. strongly resembles that of Ripipteryxatra but differs from the latter in the absence of any significant morphological modification of the flagellomeres.
