To assess the utility of autofluorescence as a noninvasive biomarker of senescence in Caenorhabditis elegans, we measured the autofluorescence of individual nematodes using spectrofluorometry. The fluorescence of each worm increased with age. Animals with lower fluorescence intensity exhibited longer life expectancy.
