Deep-red circularly polarised luminescent C₇₀ derivatives.

ABSTRACT: Optically active fullerenes, including C₆₀ and C₇₀ derivatives carrying organic substituents, are used in a range of applications because of their unique spectroscopic, catalytic, and chiral recognition properties. However, their inherent photoexcited chirality is yet to be elucidated because of their very poor fluorescence quantum yield (Φ_f). We synthesised a new chiral C₇₀ derivative, X70A, with 20% yield, by reacting bis-borylated xanthene with C₇₀ in a one-step double addition reaction, followed by a successful optical resolution. The isolation of two separate X70A enantiomers was confirmed by mirror-image circular dichroism spectroscopy in the range of 300-750 nm. In toluene, the enantiomeric pair of X70A clearly revealed mirror-image circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) spectra with a high |g_lum| value of 7.0 × 10^-3 at 690 nm. The first fullerene-based deep-red CPL of X70A should provide a new guideline for the design of chiral nanocarbon materials.

500-Fold Amplification of Small Molecule Circularly Polarised Luminescence through Circularly Polarised FRET.

Project description:Strongly dissymmetric circularly polarised (CP) luminescence from small organic molecules could transform a range of technologies, such as display devices. However, highly dissymmetric emission is usually not possible with small organic molecules, which typically give dissymmetric factors of photoluminescence (gPL ) less than 10-2 . Here we describe an almost 103 -fold chiroptical amplification of a π-extended superhelicene when embedded in an achiral conjugated polymer matrix. This combination increases the |gPL | of the superhelicene from approximately 3×10-4 in solution to 0.15 in a blend film in the solid-state. We propose that the amplification arises not simply through a chiral environment effect, but instead due to electrodynamic coupling between the electric and magnetic transition dipoles of the polymer donor and superhelicene acceptor, and subsequent CP Förster resonance energy transfer. We show that this amplification effect holds across several achiral polymer hosts and thus represents a simple and versatile approach to enhance the g-factors of small organic molecules.

Circularly polarized luminescent systems fabricated by Troger's base derivatives through two different strategies.

Project description:The Tröger's base derivative rac-TBPP was synthesized and separated into two enantiomers R 2N -TBPP and S 2N -TBPP by chiral column chromatography. These compounds show a strong circularly polarized luminescence with g lum values of +0.0021, and -0.0025, respectively. The second way to fabricate the rac-TBPP-based CPL-active material is to co-gel the fluorescent rac-TBPP with a chiral ᴅ-glutamic acid gelator DGG by co-assembly strategy. At the molar ratio of rac-TBPP/DGG = 1:80, the g lum value of the co-gel was about three times higher than the g lum values of R 2N -TBPP and S 2N -TBPP enantiomers. Interestingly, the CPL handedness of the rac-TBPP/DGG co-gel could be adjusted effectively by changing their stoichiometric ratios.

Best practices in the measurement of circularly polarised photodetectors.

Project description:Circularly polarised light will revolutionise emerging technologies, including encrypted light-based communications, quantum computing, bioimaging and multi-channel data processing. In order to make use of these remarkable opportunities, high performance photodetectors that can accurately differentiate between left- and right-handed circularly polarised light are desperately needed. Whilst this potential has resulted in considerable research interest in chiral materials and circularly polarised photodetecting devices, their translation into real-world technologies is limited by non-standardised reporting and testing protocols. This mini-review provides an accessible introduction into the working principles of circularly polarised photodetectors and a comprehensive overview of the performance metrics of state-of-the-art devices. We propose a rigorous device characterisation procedure that will allow for standardised evaluation of novel devices, which we hope will accelerate research and investment in this area.

Circularly polarised phosphorescent photoluminescence and electroluminescence of iridium complexes.

Project description:Nearly all the neutral iridium complexes widely used as dopants in PhOLEDs are racemic mixtures; however, this study observed that these complexes can be separated into stable optically active Λ and ∆ isomers and that their chirality is an intrinsic property. The circularly polarised phosphorescent photoluminescence (CPPPL) signals of Λ/Δ isomers are perfect mirror images with opposite polarisation and equal intensity exhibiting a "handedness" for the polarisation. For the first time, we applied the Λ/Δ iridium isomers as emitters in OLEDs, and the circularly polarised phosphorescent electroluminescence (CPPEL) spectra reveal completely positive or negative broad peaks consistent with the CPPPL spectra. The results demonstrate that the Λ/Δ isomers have potential application for 3D OLEDs because they can exhibit high efficiency and luminance, and 3D display technology based on circularly polarised light is the most comfortable for the eyes.

Solid-state AIEnh-circularly polarised luminescence of chiral perylene diimide fluorophores.

Project description:Solid-state organic fluorescent materials are important for the development of electroluminescent sensing devices. Herein, we report that N,N'-bis((R)-1-phenylethyl)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide [(R,R)-BPP] and its antipode [(S,S)-BPP], which contain extended π-electrons through planar perylenes, emit solid-state aggregation-induced-enhanced (AIEnh) circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in inorganic (KBr) pellets and organic-polymer-film (PMMA- and myo-IPU-film) states; this CPL is difficult to observe in solution. These chiral perylene fluorophores emit AIEnh-CPL with high dissymmetry factors (g CPL) (up to 2.4 × 10-3) and high quantum yields (Φ F, up to 0.43) in the three solid matrices.

Circularly polarised luminescence in an RNA-based homochiral, self-repairing, coordination polymer hydrogel.

Project description:The aqueous equimolar reaction of Ag(i) ions with the thionucleoside enantiomer (-)6-thioguanosine, ((-)6tGH), yields a one-dimensional coordination polymer {Ag(-)tG} n , the self-assembly of which generates left-handed helical chains. The resulting helicity induces an enhanced chiro-optical response compared to the parent ligand. DFT calculations indicate that this enhancement is due to delocalisation of the excited state along the helical chains, with 7 units being required to converge the calculated CD spectra. At concentrations ≥15 mmol l-1 reactions form a sample-spanning hydrogel which shows self-repair capabilities with instantaneous recovery in which the dynamic reversibility of the coordination chains appears to play a role. The resulting gel exhibits circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) with a large dissymmetry factor of -0.07 ± 0.01 at 735 nm, a phenomenon not previously observed for this class of coordination polymer.

Chiral probes for α1-AGP reporting by species-specific induced circularly polarised luminescence.

Project description:Luminescence spectroscopy has been used to monitor the selective and reversible binding of pH sensitive, macrocyclic lanthanide complexes, [LnL1], to the serum protein α1-AGP, whose concentration can vary significantly in response to inflammatory processes. On binding α1-AGP, a very strong induced circularly-polarised europium luminescence signal was observed that was of opposite sign for human and bovine variants of α1-AGP - reflecting the differences in the chiral environment of their drug-binding pockets. A mixture of [EuL1] and [TbL1] complexes allowed the ratiometric monitoring of α1-AGP levels in serum. Moreover, competitive displacement of [EuL1] from the protein by certain prescription drugs could be monitored, allowing the determination of drug binding constants. Reversible binding of the sulphonamide arm as a function of pH, led to a change of the coordination environment around the lanthanide ion, from twisted square antiprism (TSAP) to a square antiprismatic geometry (SAP), signalled by emission spectral changes and verified by detailed computations and the fitting of NMR pseudocontact shift data in the sulphonamide bound TSAP structure for the Dy and Eu examples. Such analyses allowed a full definition of the magnetic susceptibility tensor for [DyL1].

Inter- and intramolecular excimer circularly polarised luminescence of planar chiral paracyclophane-pyrene luminophores.

Project description:Two types of planar chiral [2,2]paracyclophane-pyrene luminophores (1 and 2) with different binding positions of the fluorescent pyrene units were synthesised. (R)/(S)-1 with 1-pyrene units exhibited green intermolecular excimer circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) at 530 nm in the KBr-pellet, but exhibited no CPL signal in dilute CHCl3 solution. In contrast, (R)/(S)-2 with 2-pyrene units exhibited a blue intramolecular excimer CPL at 450 nm in CHCl3 solution. This is the first example of using the binding position of pyrene and the external environment to tune the type (inter- or intramolecular) and chiroptical sign of excimer CPL.

Project description:Molecular and macromolecular chiral π-conjugated diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-helicene derivatives were prepared and their chiroptical properties examined experimentally and theoretically. Exciton coupling leads to red and near-infrared circularly polarized absorption and luminescence arising from the achiral DPP units in the helical environment, highlighting an interesting synergy between the chiral helicene and the organic dye.

Scale effect of circularly polarized luminescent signal of matter.

Project description:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is an important part in the research of modern luminescent materials and photoelectric devices. Usually, chiral molecules or chiral structures are the key factors to induce CPL spontaneous emission. In this study, a scale-effect model based on scalar theory was proposed to better understand the CPL signal of luminescent materials. Besides chiral structures being able to induce CPL, achiral ordered structures can also have a significant influence on CPL signals. These achiral structures are mainly reflected in the particle scale in micro-order or macro-order, i.e. the CPL signal measured under most conditions depends on the scale of the ordered medium, and does not reflect the inherent chirality of the excited state of the luminescent molecule. This kind of influence is difficult to be eliminated by simple and universal strategies in macro-measurement. At the same time, it is found that the measurement entropy of CPL detection may be the key factor to determine the isotropy and anisotropy of the CPL signal. This discovery would bring new opportunities to the research of chiral luminescent materials. This strategy can also greatly reduce the development difficulty of CPL materials and show high application potential in biomedical, photoelectric information and other fields.
