Project description:Objective During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses, especially if females and working in intensive care units or emergencies unit, were much more at risk than other health-workers categories to develop malaise and acute stress symptoms. This study aimed to examine the nurses’ post-traumatic growth and associated influencing factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A cross-sectional study using an online survey was conducted at Henan Provincial People’s Hospital to gather data from nurses. A set of questionnaires was used to measure the participants’ professional identity, organizational support, psychological resilience and post-traumatic growth. Univariate, correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to determine significant factors influencing post-traumatic growth. A theoretical framework based on the Bayesian network was constructed to understand post-traumatic growth and its associated factors comprehensively. Results In total, 1,512 nurses participated in the study, and a moderate-to-high level of post-traumatic growth was reported. After screening, the identified variables, including psychological counseling, average daily working hours, average daily sleep duration, professional identity, organizational support, and psychological resilience, were selected to build a Bayesian network model. The results of Bayesian network showed that professional identity and psychological resilience positively affected post-traumatic growth directly, which was particularly pronounced in low- and high-scoring groups. While organizational support positively affected post-traumatic growth indirectly. Conclusion Although this study identified a moderate-to-high level of nurses’ post-traumatic growth, proactive measures to improve psychological resilience fostered by professional identity and organizational support should be prioritized by hospitals and nursing managers.

Project description:ObjectiveTo study the post-traumatic growth level and influencing factors in patients with maintenance hemodialysis.MethodsA total of 179 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis from a third-level grade A hospital in Tianjin, China were investigated using Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Perceived Social Support Scale, and Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire.ResultsThe total score for the PTGI was 53.73 ± 16.45. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that social support, coping style, marital status, and family income significantly influenced the post-traumatic growth level in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. These factors explained 41.4% of the variance.ConclusionMedical staff should help patients under maintenance hemodialysis to fulfill their potentials by boosting the level of social support and to effectively cope with internal conflicts. In addition, nursing staff should provide relevant psychological health education to patients to improve their post-traumatic growth.

Project description:Vaccination against COVID-19 can prevent severe illness and reduce hospitalizations and deaths. Understanding and addressing determinants contributing to vaccine uptake among high-risk groups, such as Latinos, are pivotal in ensuring equitable vaccine distribution, promoting health equity, and fostering community engagement to bridge the gap in vaccine acceptance and ultimately enhance public health. This study aimed to examine factors influencing vaccine uptake among Latinos. We conducted a cross-sectional study using an online platform (n = 242). The survey was administered using a multimodal approach. Strategies for recruitment included community outreach, social media, and targeting community networks serving Latinos. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multivariable analysis were performed. Overall, 81.4% of respondents had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 77.0% recommending it and 70.6% believing it to be safe, 66.7% believing in its efficacy, 62.3% able to find trustful information in Spanish or Portuguese, and almost 40% who relied on health organizations as their primary resource for COVID-19 vaccine information. Factors significantly associated with vaccine uptake included higher education level (p<0.001), English level (p = 0.023), living in an urban area (p = 0.048), having insurance (p<0.001), and having a healthcare provider (p = 0.007). Furthermore, belief in vaccine safety and efficacy, trust in public health authorities, concerns about COVID-19, the ability to determine true/false vaccine information during the pandemic, and the availability of trustworthy information in Spanish/Portuguese had statistically significant associations (p<0.05) with COVID-19 vaccine uptake. COVID-19 vaccine uptake differed based on sociodemographic and other modifiable factors. Our findings emphasize the importance of implementing targeted interventions and culturally sensitive communication strategies to improve vaccination uptake among the Latino community in the United States.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study is intended to assess the prevalence of depression and anxiety in individuals who had recovered from COVID-19 and been discharged from hospital (RD hereafter) in Wuhan, China, and to explore the factors associated with these mental disorders.MethodsParticipants of this study were the RD who were infected at the beginning of the outbreak from 13 communities in Jianghan District of Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China by convenience sampling in mid-2021. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire, the Short Version of COVID-19 Stigma Scale, the Peace of Mind Scale, the Resilience Style Questionnaire, and the Perceived Social Support Questionnaire were used to collect relevant information of the participants. Descriptive analyses, Pearson correlation analysis, and logistic regression analysis were used to describe and analyze the data and to examine the factors associated with the mental health status of this population.ResultsIn total, we recruited 1601 participants from 3059 COVID-19 patients, and 1541 participants completed the questionnaire survey, with a response rate of 96.25%. Finally, 1297 participants met the inclusion and exclusion criteria in this study, of whom 28.8% and 37.9% reported mild to severe levels of anxiety and depression symptoms. Perceived better mental health status during hospitalization, higher frequency of alcohol use per week, peace of mind, higher education level, and resilience were negatively associated with anxiety, while stigma and history of psychological or emotional counseling before infection was positively associated with anxiety. More severe clinical classification of COVID-19 and stigma (AOR = 1.057, P<0.001) were both positively associated with depression, while perceived better mental health status during hospitalization (AOR = 0.564, P<0.001), higher frequency of alcohol use per week (AOR = 0.462, P = 0.004), peace of mind (AOR = 0.857, P<0.001), and social support (AOR = 0.972, P = 0.034) were negatively associated with depression.ConclusionsTailored interventions on reducing stigma, enhancing mindfulness and social support should be taken into account to alleviate anxiety and depression among RD.

Project description:BackgroundPoststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a common and debilitating complication that affects stroke survivors, impacting memory, attention, and executive function. Despite its prevalence, the factors contributing to PSCI remain unclear, with limited insights into how demographic and clinical variables influence cognitive outcomes.ObjectiveThis study investigates the incidence of cognitive impairment in patients with stroke and examines key demographic and clinical factors, such as age, gender, and education level, which contribute to cognitive decline. The aim is to provide a deeper understanding of PSCI to inform early intervention strategies for improving patient outcomes.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted on 305 patients with ischemic stroke admitted to Zhongda Hospital, Southeast University, from January 2019 to September 2022. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) within 72 hours of hospital admission. Demographic information, including age, gender, and education level, were collected. Statistical analyses were performed using chi-square tests, independent t tests, and multivariate regression to assess the relationship between cognitive function and key variables. Pearson correlation analysis explored associations among age, education, and MMSE scores.ResultsAmong the 305 patients with stroke, 16.7% (n=51) were diagnosed with cognitive impairment based on MMSE scores. The prevalence of cognitive impairment was slightly higher in males (17.6%, n=159) than females (15.8%, n=146), but this difference was not statistically significant. A strong negative correlation was found between MMSE scores and age (r=-0.32; P<.01), indicating that older patients had lower cognitive function. Education level showed a positive correlation with MMSE scores (r=0.41; P<.01), with patients with higher educational attainment demonstrating better cognitive outcomes. Cognitive function showed a marked decline in patients older than 60 years, particularly in domains such as memory, attention, and language skills.ConclusionsThis study confirms that age and education are significant factors in determining cognitive outcomes after stroke. The results align with existing literature showing that cognitive function declines with age, while higher educational attainment serves as a protective factor. The findings suggest that individuals with greater cognitive reserve, often linked to higher education, are better equipped to cope with the impact of brain injury. However, the study's reliance on MMSE may have limited its ability to detect domain-specific impairments. Future studies should consider using more sensitive cognitive tools, such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of PSCI. Cognitive impairment is prevalent among stroke survivors, with age and education level being key factors influencing outcomes. These findings underscore the importance of early detection and targeted interventions to mitigate cognitive decline. Further research with larger samples and more sensitive cognitive assessments is needed to fully understand PSCI and improve rehabilitation strategies for patients with stroke.

Project description:It is common knowledge that COVID-19 affects physiopathological changes in all systems of the human body. On the other hand, events related to the COVID-19 pandemic also have a significant impact on the social and mental sphere of human functioning. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between selected sociodemographic variables and selected subjective cognitive resources, and the positive and negative perception of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in a group of nurses working in Poland. The computer-assisted web interviewing method was conducted between 1 and 15 May 2020. Participants were requested to complete the following questionnaires: The Changes in Outlook Questionnaire (CIOQ), The Impact Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), The Safety Experience Questionnaire (SEQ), and The Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ). Three-hundred and twenty fivenurses working all over Poland participated in the study. Their mean age was 39.18 ± 11.16 years. A higher average level was noted among the surveyed nurses in the Positive Change subscale (18.56 ± 4.04). In a multivariate model, taking into account both sociodemographic and cognitive variables, the level of perceived traumatic stress, the level of social support, a sense of security, reflection on safety and a sense of meaning and meaning in life were independent predictors of a positive perception of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those variables explained as much as 37% of the dependent variable, and the nature of the relationship was positive. While we are still a long way from understanding the full range of the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and psychosocial well-being, it is possible that in this challenging context there are many individual resources available to perceive the effects of the current pandemic positively. Therefore, they should be strengthened through the development and implementation of intervention programs to improve the mental state of nurses.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented event that further stimulated the debate on the concept of trauma. To increase knowledge about the traumatic potential of the pandemic, the main objective of this study was to identify, through a systematic literature review, the main factors associated with the adaptive outcome of post-traumatic growth caused by COVID-19. Studies were selected from the PsychInfo, Embase, and PubMed databases, and 29 articles were included at the end of the screening process. The identified factors are of different natures, including personal variables such as personality traits, coping, and cognitive strategies used to face adversity, and interpersonal variables, one of the most important of which is the level of social support. In addition, several results confirmed a relationship between post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic stress symptoms, as well as indices related to psychological well-being. Finally, the results are discussed by comparing them with those already present in the literature, as well as with some of the main explanatory models of post-traumatic growth. In this regard, some of the factors identified, such as maladaptive coping, avoidance symptoms, optimism, and low-stress tolerance, suggest the possibility that the process of post-traumatic growth may also be characterized by an illusory dimension.

Project description:This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the post-traumatic growth (PTG) level and explores its predictors among adult patients with SLE in China. From April 2020 to April 2021, 135 hospitalized adult SLE patients completed the questionnaire including sociodemographic and disease-related data, Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Self-Perceived Burden Scale (SPBS). Descriptive analysis, pearson's correlation analysis, and forward multiple line regression analysis were used for analysis by SPSS 22.0. Results showed that, the mean PTGI score was 57.52 ± 20.82. Pearson correlation analysis showed that, complicated autoimmune hemolytic anemia (r = - 0.185), CD4 +/CD8 + (r = - 0.383), acceptance-resignation (r = - 0.185), poor PSQI (r = - 0.215), and depression (r = - 0.322) were negatively associated with total PTGI score; while the relationship with lupus nephritis (r = 0.247), confrontation (r = 0.313), avoidance (r = 0.379), and SSRS (r = 0.242) were positive (all P < 0.05). The total score of PTGI and its five sub-dimensions were not correlated with anxiety and self-perceived burden. Further, CD4 +/CD8 +, confrontation of MCMQ, and SSRS could explain 30.3% of the variance in total PTGI (F = 6.646, P < 0.01). In summary, Chinese adults with SLE experience moderate levels of PTG. Clinical nurses need pay attention to the current disease status and individual characteristics of patients, as well as their mental health, to promote their growth experience, so that they can cope with the future life in a better state and coexist well with SLE.

Project description:BackgroundThe risks of misinformation on social networking sites is a global issue, especially in light of the COVID-19 infodemic. WhatsApp is being used as an important source of COVID-19-related information during the current pandemic. Unlike Facebook and Twitter, limited studies have investigated the role of WhatsApp as a source of communication, information, or misinformation during crisis situations.ObjectiveOur study aimed to evaluate the vulnerability of demographic cohorts in a developing country toward COVID-19-related misinformation shared via WhatsApp. We also aimed to identify characteristics of WhatsApp messages associated with increased credibility of misinformation.MethodsWe conducted a web-based questionnaire survey and designed a scoring system based on theories supported by the existing literature. Vulnerability (K) was measured as a ratio of the respondent's score to the maximum score. Respondents were stratified according to age and occupation, and Kmean was calculated and compared among each subgroup using single-factor analysis of variance and Hochberg GT2 tests. The questionnaire evaluated the respondents' opinion of the veracity of coronavirus-related WhatsApp messages. The responses to the false-proven messages were compared using z test between the 2 groups: coronavirus-related WhatsApp messages with an attached link and/or source and those without.ResultsWe analyzed 1137 responses from WhatsApp users in India. Users aged over 65 years had the highest vulnerability (Kmean=0.38, 95% CI 0.341-0.419) to misinformation. Respondents in the age group 19-25 years had significantly lower vulnerability (Kmean=0.31, 95% CI 0.301-0.319) than those aged over 25 years (P<.05). The vulnerability of users employed in elementary occupations was the highest (Kmean=0.38, 95% CI 0.356-0.404), and it was significantly higher than that of professionals and students (P<.05). Interestingly, the vulnerability of healthcare workers was not significantly different from that of other occupation groups (P>.05). We found that false CRWMs with an attached link and/or source were marked true 6 times more often than false CRWMs without an attached link or source (P<.001).ConclusionsOur study demonstrates that in a developing country, WhatsApp users aged over 65 years and those involved in elementary occupations were found to be the most vulnerable to false information disseminated via WhatsApp. Health care workers, who are otherwise considered as experts with regard to this global health care crisis, also shared this vulnerability to misinformation with other occupation groups. Our findings also indicated that the presence of an attached link and/or source falsely validating an incorrect message adds significant false credibility, making it appear true. These results indicate an emergent need to address and rectify the current usage patterns of WhatsApp users. This study also provides metrics that can be used by health care organizations and government authorities of developing countries to formulate guidelines to contain the spread of WhatsApp-related misinformation.

Project description:ObjectivesTo investigate how post-traumatic growth (PTG) and moral sensitivity influence service behaviour among healthcare workers (HCWs) in mainland China post-COVID-19, with a focus on the mediating role of moral sensitivity.DesignCross- sectional survey design.SettingThis study was conducted in 27 provinces across mainland China, from 16 March to 2 April 2023.Participants1,193 HCWs, including 378 physicians and 815 nurses, were selected using convenience and snowball sampling methods.MethodsThe survey included the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory-Chinese version (PTGI-C), the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire-Revised Chinese Version (MSQ-R-CV) and a service behaviour scale. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the data, focusing on the associations between PTG, moral sensitivity, and service behaviours.ResultsThe study found significant associations between PTG and moral sensitivity (r=0.49, p<0.01), with both factors positively influencing HCWs' service behaviours. Specifically, PTG had a direct effect on service behaviours (β=0.172, p<0.01) and an indirect effect through moral sensitivity (β=0.333, p<0.01), with moral sensitivity mediating 65.8% of PTG's impact on service behaviours. The model explained 56.0% of the variance in service behaviours, indicating a substantial influence of these psychological factors on professional conduct.ConclusionsThe findings highlight the significant role of PTG and moral sensitivity in shaping the service behaviours of HCWs in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study suggests that enhancing PTG and moral sensitivity through targeted interventions could improve HCWs' service delivery and resilience, emphasising the importance of incorporating psychological and ethical training into healthcare practices to prepare for future public health crises.
