Three-phase alternating current liquid metal vortex magnetohydrodynamic generator.

ABSTRACT: Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generators directly convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. However, due to production of low amplitude voltages at low fluid velocities, they are not useful for electronic devices requiring power at watt scale. This work introduces vortex MHD, capable of producing voltages on scale of volts and generating power on a scale of watts. This is achieved by using Galinstan, a highly conductive metallic fluid, which remains liquid at room temperature. The proposed device comprises an impeller and set of copper coils positioned in a ferromagnetic housing. Three-phase AC current is passed in the coils producing a rotating magnetic field. The interaction of a moving conductive fluid and rotating magnetic field governed by Faraday's law of induction serves as a mechanism of electrical current generation. The study investigates the system performance and, in particular, variation of power with respect to system parameters like fluid inlet velocity and stator current.

A Liquid-Metal Based Spiral Magnetohydrodynamic Micropump.

Project description:A liquid-metal based spiral magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) micropump is proposed in this work. The micropump was fabricated in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-glass hybrid microfluidic chip. This pump utilized two parallel liquid-metal-filled channels as electrodes to generate a parallel electrical field across the pumping channel between the two electrodes. To prevent contact and cross contamination between the liquid metal in the electrode channel and the sample fluid in the pumping channel, a PDMS gap was designed between the liquid metal and the sample fluid. To minimize the chip size, the parallel electrode and pumping channels were designed in a spiral shape. To test pumping performance, NaCl aqueous solution containing fluorescent particles (0.5 μm in diameter) was filled into the pumping channel as the working sample fluid. When a pair of identical magnets (0.4 T) was placed onto both top and bottom surfaces of the chip, the pump was able to drive the sample fluid at a flow velocity of 233.26 μm/s at 3000 V. The pump has no moving parts, and the electrodes are easily fabricated, making the pump suitable for miniaturization and integration into microfluidic systems.

Jump rope vortex in liquid metal convection.

Project description:Understanding large-scale circulations (LSCs) in turbulent convective systems is important for the study of stars, planets, and in many industrial applications. The canonical model of the LSC is quasi-planar with additional horizontal sloshing and torsional modes [Brown E, Ahlers G (2009) J Fluid Mech 638:383-400; Funfschilling D, Ahlers G (2004) Phys Rev Lett 92:194502; Xi HD et al. (2009) Phys Rev Lett 102:044503; Zhou Q et al. (2009) J Fluid Mech 630:367-390]. Using liquid gallium as the working fluid, we show, via coupled laboratory-numerical experiments in tanks with aspect ratios greater than unity ([Formula: see text]), that the LSC takes instead the form of a "jump rope vortex," a strongly 3D mode that periodically orbits around the tank following a motion much like a jump rope on a playground. Further experiments show that this jump rope flow also exists in more viscous fluids such as water, albeit with a far smaller signal. Thus, this jump rope mode is an essential component of the turbulent convection that underlies our observations of natural systems.

Remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil by asymmetrical alternating current electrochemistry.

Project description:Soil contamination by heavy metals constitutes an important environmental problem, whereas field applicability of existing remediation technologies has encountered numerous obstacles, such as long operation time, high chemical cost, large energy consumption, secondary pollution, and soil degradation. Here we report the design and demonstration of a remediation method based on a concept of asymmetrical alternating current electrochemistry that achieves high degrees of contaminant removal for different heavy metals (copper, lead, cadmium) at different initial concentrations (from 100 to 10,000 ppm), all reaching corresponding regulation levels for residential scenario after rational treatment time (from 30 min to 6 h). No excessive nutrient loss in treated soil is observed and no secondary toxic product is produced. Long-term experiment and plant assay show the high sustainability of the method and its feasibility for agricultural use.

Alternating-Magnetic-Field-Mediated Wireless Manipulations of a Liquid Metal for Therapeutic Bioengineering.

Project description:As emergent multifunctional materials, room temperature liquid metals (LMs) display many unique properties. Here we show that applying an external alternating magnetic field (AMF) to an LM induces various physical phenomena, such as exothermic behavior, controlled locomotion, electromagnetic levitation, and transformations of the LMs between different morphologies and configurations, in a non-contact manner. Additional interesting therapeutic bioengineering applications of LMs demonstrated herein include in vitro and in vivo effective cancer magnetic hyperthermia via wireless AMF, remote manipulation of a pill-shaped microdevice based on an LM/hydrogel composite, and spatiotemporal controlled release of drug molecules from the microdevice. Overall, as an innovative therapeutic bioengineering technology, this platform and the described performance traits of LMs enable the development of biocompatible smart devices with a wide range of dynamic components that can be wirelessly controlled in a manner that solves issues related to the powering of devices and biocompatibility.

Liquid phase blending of metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:The liquid and glass states of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently become of interest due to the potential for liquid-phase separations and ion transport, alongside the fundamental nature of the latter as a new, fourth category of melt-quenched glass. Here we show that the MOF liquid state can be blended with another MOF component, resulting in a domain structured MOF glass with a single, tailorable glass transition. Intra-domain connectivity and short range order is confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and pair distribution function measurements. The interfacial binding between MOF domains in the glass state is evidenced by electron tomography, and the relationship between domain size and Tg investigated. Nanoindentation experiments are also performed to place this new class of MOF materials into context with organic blends and inorganic alloys.

Coupling of Alternating Current to Transition-Metal Catalysis: Examples of Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling.

Project description:The coupling of transition-metal to photoredox catalytic cycles through single-electron transfer steps has become a powerful tool in the development of catalytic processes. In this work, we demonstrated that transition-metal catalysis can be coupled to alternating current (AC) through electron transfer steps that occur periodically at the same electrode. AC-assisted Ni-catalyzed amination, etherification, and esterification of aromatic bromides showed higher yields and selectivity compared to that observed in the control experiments with direct current. Our mechanistic studies suggested the importance of both reduction and oxidation processes in the maintenance of the AC-assisted catalytic reactions. As described in presented examples, the AC assistance should be well-suited for catalytic cycles involving reductive elimination or oxidative addition as a limiting step.

Phase Transitions of Oppositely Charged Colloidal Particles Driven by Alternating Current Electric Field.

Project description:We study systems containing oppositely charged colloidal particles under applied alternating current electric fields (AC fields) using overdamped Langevin dynamics simulations in three dimensions. We obtain jammed bands perpendicular to the field direction under intermediate frequencies and lanes parallel with the field under low frequencies. These structures also depend upon the particle charges. The pathway for generating jammed bands follows a stepwise mechanism, and intermediate bands are observed during lane formation in some systems. We investigate the component of the pressure tensors in the direction parallel to the field and observe that the jammed to lane transition occurs at a critical value for this pressure. We also find that the stable steady states appear to satisfy the principle of maximum entropy production. Our results may help to improve the understand of the underlying mechanisms for these types of dynamic phase transitions and the subsequent cooperative assemblies of colloidal particles under such non-equilibrium conditions.

Phase and Frequency-Dependent Effects of Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation on Motor Cortical Excitability.

Project description:Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can entrain ongoing brain oscillations and modulate the motor system in a frequency-dependent manner. Recent animal studies have demonstrated that the phase of a sinusoidal current also has an important role in modulation of neuronal activity. However, the phase effects of tACS on the human motor system are largely unknown. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of tACS phase and frequency on the primary motor cortex (M1) by using motor evoked potentials (MEPs) with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). First, we compared the phase effects (90°, 180°, 270° or 360°) of 10 and 20 Hz tACS on MEPs. The 20 Hz tACS significantly increased M1 excitability compared with the 10 Hz tACS at 90° phase only. Second, we studied the 90° phase effect on MEPs at different tACS frequencies (5, 10, 20 or 40 Hz). The 20 vs. 10 Hz difference was again observed, but the 90° phase in 5 and 40 Hz tACS did not influence M1 excitability. Third, the 90° phase effects of 10 and 20 Hz tACS were compared with sham stimulation. The 90° phase of 20 Hz tACS enhanced MEP amplitudes compared with sham stimulation, but there was no significant effect of 10 Hz tACS. Taken together, we assume that the differential 90° phase effects on 20 Hz and 10 Hz tACS can be attributed to the neural synchronization modulated by tACS. Our results further underline that phase and frequency are the important factors in the effects of tACS on M1 excitability.

Three archetypical classes of macromolecular regulators of protein liquid-liquid phase separation.

Project description:Membraneless organelles, corresponding to the droplet phase upon liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of protein or protein-RNA mixtures, mediate myriad cellular functions. Cells use a variety of biochemical signals such as expression level and posttranslational modification to regulate droplet formation and dissolution, but the physical basis of the regulatory mechanisms remains ill-defined and quantitative assessment of the effects is largely lacking. Our computational study predicted that the strength of attraction by droplet-forming proteins dictates whether and how macromolecular regulators promote or suppress LLPS. We experimentally tested this prediction, using the pentamers of SH3 domains and proline-rich motifs (SH35 and PRM5) as droplet-forming proteins. Determination of the changes in phase boundary and the partition coefficients in the droplet phase over a wide range of regulator concentrations yielded both a quantitative measure and a mechanistic understanding of the regulatory effects. Three archetypical classes of regulatory effects were observed. Ficoll 70 at high concentrations indirectly promoted SH35-PRM5 LLPS, by taking up volume in the bulk phase and thereby displacing SH35 and PRM5 into the droplet phase. Lysozyme had a moderate partition coefficient and suppressed LLPS by substituting weaker attraction with SH35 for the stronger SH35-PRM5 attraction in the droplet phase. By forming even stronger attraction with PRM5, heparin at low concentrations partitioned heavily into the droplet phase and promoted LLPS. These characteristics were recapitulated by computational results of patchy particle models, validating the identification of the 3 classes of macromolecular regulators as volume-exclusion promotors, weak-attraction suppressors, and strong-attraction promotors.

Enhancing the Performance of Triboelectric Generator: A Novel Approach Using Solid-Liquid Interface-Treated Foam and Metal Contacts.

Project description:This work introduces a novel approach for enhancing the performance of a triboelectric generator (TEG) by using a solid-liquid interface-treated foam (SLITF) as its active layer, combined with two metal contacts of different work functions. SLITF is made by absorbing water into a cellulose foam, which enables charges generated by friction energy during the sliding motion to be separated and transferred through the conductive path formed by the hydrogen-bonded network of water molecules. Unlike traditional TEGs, the SLITF-TEG demonstrates an impressive current density of 3.57 A/m2 and can harvest electric power up to 0.174 W/m2 with an induced voltage of approximately 0.55 V. The device generates a direct current in the external circuit, eliminating the limitations of low current density and alternating current found in traditional TEGs. By connecting six-unit cells of SLITF-TEG in series and parallel, the peak voltage and current can be increased up to 3.2 V and 12.5 mA, respectively. Furthermore, the SLITF-TEG has the potential to serve as a self-powered vibration sensor with high accuracy (R2 = 0.99). The findings demonstrate the significant potential of the SLITF-TEG approach for efficiently harvesting low-frequency mechanical energy from the natural environment, with broad implications for a range of applications.
