Thermo-Mechanical Behavior of Poly(ether ether ketone): Experiments and Modeling.

ABSTRACT: Observations are reported on poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) in uniaxial tensile tests, relaxation tests and creep tests with various stresses in a wide interval of temperatures ranging from room temperature to 180 °C. Constitutive equations are developed for the thermo-mechanical behavior of PEEK under uniaxial deformation. Adjustable parameters in the governing equations are found by matching the experimental data. Good agreement is demonstrated between the observations and results of numerical simulation. It is shown that the activation energies for the elastoplastic, viscoelastic and viscoelastoplastic responses adopt similar values at temperatures above the glass transition point.

Preparation of Poly(ether-ether-ketone)/Nanohydroxyapatite Composites with Improved Mechanical Performance and Biointerfacial Affinity.

Project description:Poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) displays promising potential in hard tissue repair and orthopedic surgery due to its adaptable mechanical performance, good chemical resistance, and bioinertness. However, the low biointerfacial affinity of pure PEEK implants and the decrease of mechanical strength after processing greatly limit their clinical applications. In this work, the influences on mechanical performance and biointerfacial affinity of the PEEK/nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) composites are systematically investigated. Results show that the mechanical performance of PEEK/nHA composites was improved by adjusting the nHA content. The maximum values of the tensile, compressive, bending, and impact strength of the composites were increased by approximately 16.2, 25, 54, and 21%, respectively, when compared with that of pure PEEK. Studies in vitro show that PEEK/nHA composites display good cytocompatibility and promote the biomimic formation of HA, adhesion, and proliferation of L929 cells on the surface. Studies in vivo demonstrate that, compared to the pure PEEK, PEEK/nHA composites exhibit higher biointerfacial affinity, including the adhesion and encapsulation of muscle tissues on the surface of the implants and the suppression of inflammatory reaction around the implants. Our findings could pave the way for extensive applications of PEEK/nHA composites in hard tissue repair, particularly orthopedic surgery.

Poly(ether ether ketone)-Grafted Graphene Oxide "Interconnects" Enhance Mechanical, Dynamic Mechanical, and Flame-Retardant Properties in Epoxy Laminates.

Project description:Herein, the interface of epoxy and graphene oxide (GO) is tailored through hydroxylated poly(ether ether ketone) (HPEEK). The resultant modification (HPEEK-g-GO) improved the interfacial adhesion between epoxy and carbon fiber (CF) in the laminates. This strategy resulted in improved tensile strength, modulus, and storage modulus by 8, 10, and 26%, respectively, with respect to control samples (epoxy/CF laminates). The HPEEK-g-GO was thoroughly characterized using spectroscopic techniques and was infused using vacuum-enhanced resin infusion technology into the epoxy/CF laminates. To address the challenges involved with primary agglomeration, the composite formulation was subjected to mechanical stirring coupled with bath sonication throughout the mixing process. The improved structural properties in epoxy/CF laminates were attributed to HPEEK-g-GO "interconnects", which provided the necessary reinforcement owing to better interfacial adhesion with the CF mat as inferred from the fracture surface morphology assessed using SEM. In addition, the epoxy laminates containing HPEEK-g-GO also showed flame-retardant properties along with good thermal stability. The electromagnetic interference shielding capability of the modified laminates was also evaluated in the frequency range of 12-18 GHz. It was observed that the laminates exhibited a shielding effectiveness of -50 dB. Thus, this strategy offers some promise in fabricating epoxy/CF laminates with multifunctional properties through HPEEK-g-GO "interconnects".

Study on the Overmolding Process of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Poly (Aryl Ether Ketone) (PAEK)/Poly (Ether Ether Ketone) (PEEK) Thermoplastic Composites.

Project description:This paper used poly (aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) resin with a low melting temperature to prepare laminate via the compression-molding process for continuous-carbon-fiber-reinforced composites (CCF-PAEK). Then, poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK), or a short-carbon-fiber-reinforced poly (ether ether ketone) (SCF-PEEK) with a high melting temperature, was injected to prepare the overmolding composites. The shear strength of short beams was used to characterize the interface bonding strength of composites. The results showed that the interface properties of the composite were affected by the interface temperature, which was adjusted by mold temperature. PAEK and PEEK formed a better interfacial bonding at higher interface temperatures. The shear strength of the SCF-PEEK/CCF-PAEK short beam was 77 MPa when the mold temperature was 220 °C and 85 MPa when the mold temperature was raised to 260 °C. The melting temperature did not significantly affect the shear strength of SCF-PEEK/CCF-PAEK short beams. For the melting temperature increasing from 380 °C to 420 °C, the shear strength of the SCF-PEEK/CCF-PAEK short beam ranged from 83 MPa to 87 MPa. The microstructure and failure morphology of the composite was observed using an optical microscope. A molecular dynamics model was established to simulate the adhesion of PAEK and PEEK at different mold temperatures. The interfacial bonding energy and diffusion coefficient agreed with the experimental results.

Grafting Polymer Brushes by ATRP from Functionalized Poly(ether ether ketone) Microparticles.

Project description:Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with excellent mechanical and chemical properties. PEEK exhibits a high degree of resistance to thermal, chemical, and bio-degradation. PEEK is used as biomaterial in the field of orthopaedic and dental implants; however, due to its intrinsic hydrophobicity and inert surface, PEEK does not effectively support bone growth. Therefore, new methods to modify PEEK's surface to improve osseointegration are key to next generation polymer implant materials. Unfortunately, PEEK is a challenging material to both modify and subsequently characterize thus stymieing efforts to improve PEEK osseointegration. In this manuscript, we demonstrate how surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) can be used to modify novel PEEK microparticles (PMP). The hard core-soft shell microparticles were synthesized and characterized by DLS, ATR-IR, XPS and TEM, indicating the grafted materials increased solubility and stability in a range of solvents. The discovered surface grafted PMP can be used as compatibilizers for the polymer-tissue interface.

Formulation of a covalently bonded hydroxyapatite and poly(ether ether ketone) composite.

Project description:Spinal fusion devices can be fabricated from composites based on combining hydroxyapatite and poly(ether ether ketone) phases. These implants serve as load-bearing scaffolds for the formation of new bone tissue between adjacent vertebrae. In this work, we report a novel approach to covalently bond hydroxyapatite and poly(ether ether ketone) to produce a novel composite formulation with enhanced interfacial adhesion between phases. Compared to non-linked composites (HA_PEEK), covalently linked composites (HA_L_PEEK), loaded with 1.25 vol% hydroxyapatite, possessed a greater mean flexural strength (170 ± 5.4 vs 171.7 ± 14.8 MPa (mean ± SD)) and modulus (4.8 ± 0.2 vs 5.0 ± 0.3 GPa (mean ± SD)). Although the mechanical properties were not found to be significantly different (p > 0.05), PEEK_L_HA contained substantially larger hydroxyapatite inclusions (100-1000 µm) compared to HA_PEEK (50-200 µm), due to the inherently agglomerative nature of the covalently bonded hydroxyapatite and poly(ether ether ketone) additive. Larger inclusions would expectedly weaken the HA_L_PEEK composite; however, there is no significant difference between the flexural modulus of poly(ether ether ketone) with respect to HA_L_PEEK (p = 0.13). In addition, the flexural modulus of HA_PEEK is significantly lower compared to poly(ether ether ketone) (p = 0.03). Ultimately, covalent linking reduces hydroxyapatite particulate de-bonding from the polymeric matrix and inhibits micro-crack development, culminating in enhanced transfer of stiffness between hydroxyapatite and poly(ether ether ketone) under loading.

Novel poly(arylene ether ketone)/poly(ethylene glycol)-grafted poly(arylene ether ketone) composite microporous polymer electrolyte for electrical double-layer capacitors with efficient ionic transport.

Project description:Polymer electrolytes have attracted considerable research interest due to their advantages of shape control, excellent safety, and flexibility. However, the limited use of traditional polymer electrolytes in electric double-layer capacitors due to their unsatisfactory ionic conductivities and poor mechanical properties makes them difficult to operate for long periods of time in large-scale energy storage. Therefore, we fabricated a high-performance microporous electrolyte based on poly(arylene ether ketone) (PAEK)/poly(ethylene glycol)-grafted poly(arylene ether ketone) (PAEK-g-PEG) using a certain amount of carboxylated chitosan with a high electrolyte uptake rate of 322 wt% and a high ionic conductivity of 2 × 10-2 S cm-1 at room temperature. A symmetric solid-state supercapacitor that uses activated carbon as electrodes and a composite microporous polymer film as the electrolyte shows a high specific capacitance of 134.38 F g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1, while liquid electrolytes demonstrate a specific capacitance of 126.92 F g-1. Energy density of the solid-state supercapacitor was 15.82% higher than that of the liquid supercapacitor at a current density of 5 A g-1. In addition, the solid-state supercapacitor exhibited excellent cycling stability of over 5000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1. Furthermore, solid-state supercapacitors display lower self-discharge behavior with an open-circuit potential drop of only 36% within 70 000 s, which is significantly better than that of conventional supercapacitors (52% @ 70 000 s), at a charging current density of 1 mA cm-2. The satisfactory results indicated that the PAEK/PAEK-g-PEG composite microporous polymer film demonstrates high potential as an electrolyte material in practical applications of solid-state and portable energy storage devices.

Multiscale Porous Poly (Ether-Ether-Ketone) Structures Manufactured by Powder Bed Fusion Process.

Project description:The aim of the study is to create a multiscale highly porous poly (ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) structure while maintaining mechanical performance; the distribution of pores being generated by the manufacturing process combined with a porogen leaching operation. Salt at 70 wt% concentration was used as a porogen in a dry blend with PEEK powder sintered in the powder bed fusion process. The printed porous PEEK structures were examined and evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, microcomputed tomography, and mechanical testing. The PEEK structures incorporating 70 wt% salt achieved 79-86% porosity, a compressive yield strength of 4.1 MPa, and a yield strain of ∼60%. Due to the salt leaching process, the PEEK porous frameworks were fabricated without the need to drastically reduce the process parameters (defined by the energy density [ED]), hence maintaining the structural integrity and good mechanical performance. The compression results highlighted that the performance is influenced by the printing orientation, level of the PEEK particle coalescence (controlled here by the ED), pore/cell wall thickness, and subsequently, the overall porosity framework. The porous printed PEEK structures could find potential uses in a wide range of applications from tissue engineering, filtration and separation to catalysts, drug release, and gas storage.

Robust sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) nanochannels for high-performance osmotic energy conversion.

Project description:The membrane-based reverse electrodialysis (RED) technique has a fundamental role in harvesting clean and sustainable osmotic energy existing in the salinity gradient. However, the current designs of membranes cannot cope with the high output power density and robustness. Here, we construct a sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) nanochannel membrane with numerous nanochannels for a membrane-based osmotic power generator. The parallel nanochannels with high space charges show excellent cation-selectivity, which could further be improved by adjusting the length and charge density of nanochannels. Based on numerical simulation, the system with space charge shows better conductivity and selectivity than those of a surface-charged nanochannel. The output power density of our proposed membrane-based device reaches up to 5.8 W/m2 by mixing artificial seawater and river water. Additionally, the SPEEK membranes exhibit good mechanical properties, endowing the possibility of creating a high-endurance scale-up membrane-based generator system. We believe that this work provides useful insights into material design and fluid transport for the power generator in osmotic energy conversion.

Thermoelectric Properties of N-Type Poly (Ether Ether Ketone)/Carbon Nanofiber Melt-Processed Composites.

Project description:The thermoelectric properties, at temperatures from 30 °C to 100 °C, of melt-processed poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites prepared with 10 wt.% of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are discussed in this work. At 30 °C, the PEEK/CNF composites show an electrical conductivity (σ) of ~27 S m-1 and a Seebeck coefficient (S) of -3.4 μV K-1, which means that their majority charge carriers are electrons. The origin of this negative Seebeck is deduced because of the impurities present in the as-received CNFs, which may cause sharply varying and localized states at approximately 0.086 eV above the Fermi energy level (EF) of CNFs. Moreover, the lower S, in absolute value, found in PEEK/CNF composites, when compared with the S of as-received CNFs (-5.3 μV K-1), is attributed to a slight electron withdrawing from the external layers of CNFs by the PEEK matrix. At temperatures from 30 °C to 100 °C, the σ (T) of PEEK/CNF composites, in contrast to the σ (T) of as-received CNFs, shows a negative temperature effect, understood through the 3D variable-range hopping (VRH) model, as a thermally activated hopping mechanism across a random network of potential wells. Moreover, their nonlinear S (T) follows the same behavior reported before for polypropylene composites melt-processed with similar CNFs at the same interval of temperatures.

The Shape Memory Properties and Actuation Performances of 4D Printing Poly (Ether-Ether-Ketone).

Project description:Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) have gradually emerged in the mechanism and biomedical fields and facilitate the upgrading of industrial mechanisms and the breakthrough of technical bottlenecks. However, most of the SMPs are infeasible in harsh environments, such as aerospace, due to the low glass transition temperature. There are still some works that remain in creating truly portable or non-contacting actuators that can match the performances and functions of traditional metal structures. Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) with a high glass transition temperature of 143 °C is endowed with outstanding high-temperature resistance and radiation-resistant properties and shape memory behavior. Thus, we explore the shape-memory properties and actuation performances of high-temperature PEEK in bending behaviors. The shape-recovery ratio, actuation speed and force under different programming conditions and structure parameters are summarized to complete the actuation capacities. Meanwhile, a metallic ball transported by shape-memory PEEK and deployed drag sail with thermo-responsive composite joints were shown to verify the potential in aerospace.
