Effect of the Chloro-Substitution on Electrochemical and Optical Properties of New Carbazole Dyes.

ABSTRACT: Carbazole derivatives are the structural key of many biologically active substances, including naturally occurring and synthetic ones. Three novel (E)-2-(2-(4-9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzylidene)hydrazinyl)triazole dyes were synthesized with different numbers of chlorine substituents attached at different locations. The presented research has shown the influence of the number and position of attachment of chlorine substituents on electrochemical, optical, nonlinear, and biological properties. The study also included the analysis of the use of the presented derivatives as potential fluorescent probes for in vivo and in vitro tests. Quantum-chemical calculations complement the conducted experiments.

Influence of Fluorine Substitution on the Optical, Thermal, Electrochemical and Structural Properties of Carbazole-Benzothiadiazole Dicarboxylic Imide Alternate Copolymers.

Project description:In this work four novel donor-acceptor copolymers, PCDTBTDI-DMO, PCDTBTDI-8, P2F-CDTBTDI-DMO and P2F-CDTBTDI-8, were designed and synthesised via Suzuki polymerisation. The first two copolymers consist of 2,7-carbazole flanked by thienyl moieties as the electron donor unit and benzothiadiazole dicarboxylic imide (BTDI) as electron acceptor units. In the structures of P2F-CDTBTDI-DMO and P2F-CDTBTDI-8 copolymers, two fluorine atoms were incorporated at 3,6-positions of 2,7-carbazole to investigate the impact of fluorine upon the optoelectronic, structural and thermal properties of the resulting polymers. P2F-CDTBTDI-8 possesses the highest number average molecular weight (Mn = 24,200 g mol-1) among all the polymers synthesised. PCDTBTDI-DMO and PCDTBTDI-8 show identical optical band gaps of 1.76 eV. However, the optical band gaps of fluorinated copolymers are slightly higher than non-fluorinated counterparts. All polymers have deep-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels. Changing the alkyl chain substituents on BTDI moieties from linear n-octyl to branched 3,7-dimethyloctyl groups as well as substituting the two hydrogen atoms at 3,6-positions of carbazole unit by fluorine atoms has negligible impact on the HOMO levels of the polymers. Similarly, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are almost comparable for all polymers. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) has shown that all polymers have good thermal stability and also confirmed that the fluorinated copolymers have higher thermal stability relative to those non-fluorinated analogues. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies proved that all polymers have an amorphous nature in the solid state.

Impact of the bromination of carbazole-based D-π-A organic dyes on their optical and electrochemical properties and visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Brominated dyes, 2C-n (n = 1-5), 3C-4 and 4C-4, were prepared through bromination of three carbazole-based D-π-A dyes, 2C, 3C and 4C with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS). The detailed structures of the brominated dyes were confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS). The introduction of the Br atom on the 1,8-positon of carbazole moieties led to blueshifted UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra, increased initial oxidation potentials and enlarged dihedral angles, indicating bromination enhanced non-planarity of the dye molecules. In the hydrogen production experiments, with the increase of the Br content in brominated dyes, the photocatalytic activity increased continuously (except 2C-1). The dye-sensitized Pt/TiO2, 2C-4@T, 3C-4@T and 4C-4@T, exhibited high hydrogen production efficiencies of 655.4, 877.9 and 905.6 μmol h-1 g-1, respectively, which were 4-6-fold higher than those of 2C@T, 3C@T and 4C@T. The enhanced performance of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was attributed to decreased dye aggregation resulting from the highly non-planar molecular structures of the brominated dyes.

Synthesis of novel multifunctional carbazole-based molecules and their thermal, electrochemical and optical properties.

Project description:Two novel carbazole-based compounds 7a and 7b were synthesised as potential candidates for application in organic electronics. The materials were fully characterised by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, cyclic voltammetry, and absorption and emission spectroscopy. Compounds 7a and 7b, both of which were amorphous solids, were stable up to 291 °C and 307 °C, respectively. Compounds 7a and 7b show three distinctive absorption bands: high and mid energy bands due to locally excited (LE) transitions and low energy bands due to intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transitions. In dichloromethane solutions compounds 7a and 7b gave emission maxima at 561 nm and 482 nm with quantum efficiencies of 5.4% and 97.4% ± 10%, respectively. At positive potential, compounds 7a and 7b gave two different oxidation peaks, respectively: quasi-reversible at 0.55 V and 0.71 V, and reversible at 0.84 V and 0.99 V. At negative potentials, compounds 7a and 7b only exhibited an irreversible reduction peak at -1.86 V and -1.93 V, respectively.

Synthesis and investigation on optical and electrochemical properties of 2,4-diaryl-9-chloro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroacridines.

Project description:A facile synthesis of 2,4-diaryl-9-chloro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroacridine derivatives is reported which is based on POCl3-mediated cyclodehydration followed by double Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. The absorption and fluorescence properties of the obtained products were investigated and their HOMO/LUMO energy levels were estimated by cyclic voltammetry measurements. Besides, density functional theory calculations were carried out for further exploration of their electronic properties.

Green Perylene Bisimide Dyes: Synthesis, Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties.

Project description:Three asymmetric amino-substituted perylene bisimide dyes with different n-alkyl chain lengths (n = 6, 12, or 18), 1-(N,N-dialkylamino)perylene bisimides (1a-1c), were synthesized under mild condition in high yields and were characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), HRMS (High Resolution Mass Spectrometer), UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra, as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV). These molecules show intense green color in both solution and solid state and are highly soluble in dichloromethane and even in nonpolar solvents, such as hexane. The shapes of the absorption spectra of 1a-1c in solid state and in solution were found to be virtually the same, indicating that the long alkyl chains could efficiently prevent aggregation. They exhibit a unique charge transfer emission in the near-infrared region, of which the peak wavelengths show strong solvatochromism. The dipole moments of the compounds have been estimated using the Lippert-Mataga equation, and upon excitation, they show larger dipole moment changes than that of 1-aminoperylene bisimide (2). Furthermore, all of the compounds exhibit two quasi-reversible one-electron oxidations and two quasi-reversible one-electron reductions in dichloromethane at modest potentials. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on these dyes are reported in order to rationalize their molecular structures and electronic properties.

Effect of aliovalent bismuth substitution on structure and optical properties of CsSnBr<sub>3</sub>.

Project description:Aliovalent substitution of the B component in ABX3 metal halides has often been proposed to modify the band gap and thus the photovoltaic properties, but details about the resulting structure have remained largely unknown. Here, we examine these effects in Bi-substituted CsSnBr3. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid-state 119Sn, 133Cs and 209Bi nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were carried out to infer how Bi substitution changes the structure of these compounds. The cubic perovskite structure is preserved upon Bi-substitution, but with disorder in the B site occurring at the atomic level. Bi atoms are randomly distributed as they substitute for Sn atoms with no evidence of Bi segregation. The absorption edge in the optical spectra shifts from 1.8 to 1.2 eV upon Bi-substitution, maintaining a direct band gap according to electronic structure calculations. It is shown that Bi-substitution improves resistance to degradation by inhibiting the oxidation of Sn.

Push-Pull Carbazole-Based Dyes: Synthesis, Strong Ultrafast Nonlinear Optical Response, and Effective Photoinitiation for Multiphoton Lithography.

Project description:The present work reports on the ultrafast nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of D-π-Α and D-A push-pull carbazole-based dyes and establishes a correlation between these properties and their efficiency for potential photonic and optoelectronic applications such as multiphoton lithography (MPL). The ultrafast NLO properties of the studied dyes are determined by two distinct experimental techniques, Z-scan and pump-probe optical Kerr effect (OKE), employing 246 fs laser pulses at 515 nm. The results indicate that chemical functionalization of the carbazole moiety with various strong electron-donating and/or electron-withdrawing groups, such as benzene, styrene, 4-bromostyrene, nitrobenzene, trimethyl isocyanurate, methyl, and indane-1,3-dione, can result in a controlled and significant enhancement of the NLO absorptive and refractive responses. In the context of potential applications, the efficiency of carbazole-based organic materials as photoinitiators (PIs) for MPL applications is demonstrated. The fabricated woodpile microstructure using chemically functionalized carbazole as a PI demonstrates improvements in both feature size and MPL efficiency compared to that using unfunctionalized carbazole as a PI. This is attributed to the efficient charge transfer resulting from chemical functionalization, which leads to a substantial increase (approximately 1 order of magnitude) in the values of the imaginary part of the second-order hyperpolarizability (Imγ) and the two-photon absorption cross section (σ). The achieved feature size of 280 nm is comparable to that obtained with other widely used PIs in MPL applications. Additionally, owing to the strong NLO properties of the studied functionalized carbazole, they could also be promising candidates for further applications in photonics and optoelectronics.

Theoretical Study of the Effect of π-Bridge on Optical and Electronic Properties of Carbazole-Based Sensitizers for DSSCs.

Project description:Eight novel metal-free organic sensitizers were proposed for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), theoretically calculated and studied via density functional theory with D-π-A structure. These proposals were formed to study the effect of novel π-bridges, using carbazole as the donor group and cyanoacrylic acid as the anchorage group. Through the M06/6-31G(d) level of theory, ground state geometry optimization, vibrational frequencies, the highest occupied molecular orbital, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, and their energy levels were calculated. Further, chemical reactivity parameters were obtained and analyzed, such as chemical hardness (η), electrophilicity index (ω), electroaccepting power (ω+) and electrodonating power (ω-). Free energy of electron injection (ΔGinj) and light-harvesting efficiency (LHE) also were calculated and discussed. On the other hand, absorption wavelengths, oscillator strengths, and electron transitions were calculated through time-dependent density functional theory with the M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory. In conclusion, the inclusion of thiophene groups and the Si heteroatom in the π-bridge improved charge transfer, chemical stability, and other optoelectronic properties of carbazole-based dyes.
