Project description:In order to ensure the concentration, compliance and motivation of the participants, a short version of 12 items was extracted from the "Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire (ECR)". Even though this short English version shows equally good validity and reliability as the long version, there have been no representative norm values and psychometric characteristics available for the short version in German. Therefore, the German 12-item ECR was implemented in a representative sample of 1,127 males and 1,237 females (mean age M = 49.93; SD = 12.31) from the general public (N = 2,364). The reliability values of the German 12-item ECR in the representative sample are not as good as the long version with the 36- items version (Alpha = .54-72), and the 12-item ECR factorial structure failed to show the factorial validity. Since the EFA revealed that only half the items loaded on the expected factors, an even shorter form with six items was construed and tested psychometrically. Even though the item numbers were reduced, the reliability values of the German 6-item ECR improved and were as good as the long version with 36 items (Alpha = .73-90). Furthermore, factorial validity could be shown by CFA (CFI = .981, SRMR = .038, RMSEA = .079, TLI = .964) with scalar invariance across gender and age. In sum, the 6-item ECR is a reliable and factorial scalar attachment questionnaire. Due to its shortness, it is applicable to different research fields. However, reference data from a clinical sample are still missing.

Project description:BackgroundAttachment insecurity is a prominent risk factor for the development and course of psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders. The Experiences in Close Relationships - Revised (ECR-R) questionnaire is a widely used self-report to assess attachment related anxiety and avoidance. However, its length has the potential to restrict its use in large, multi-instrument studies. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a brief version of the ECR-R, and provide norm values for the German population.MethodsA screening version of the original ECR-R was developed through principal components analysis of datasets from several previous studies. In a representative sample of 2428 randomly selected individuals from the German population, we compared fit indices of different models by means of confirmatory factor analyses (CFA). We investigated the convergent validity of the screening version in an independent convenience sample of 557 participants. Correlations between the short and the full scale were investigated in a re-analysis of the original German ECR-R evaluation sample.ResultsCFA indicated a satisfactory model fit for an eight-item version (ECR-RD8). The ECR-RD8 demonstrated adequate reliability. The subscales correlated as expected with another self-report measure of attachment in an independent sample. Individuals with higher levels of attachment anxiety, but especially higher levels of attachment avoidance were significantly more likely to not be in a relationship, across all age groups. Correlations between the short and the full scale were high.ConclusionsThe ECR-RD8 appears to be a reliable, valid, and economic questionnaire for assessing attachment insecurity. In addition, the reported population-based norm values will help to contextualize future research findings.

Project description:Attachment theory helps us to understand patients´ health behavior. Attachment styles might explain patient differences in coping behavior, self-treatment, or patient-provider relationships. In primary care time constrains are relevant. A short instrument may facilitate screening and assessment in daily medical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate a 12-item short version of the Experience in Close Relationships-revised (ECR-R-D) to be used in primary care settings. We included 249 patients from ten general practices in central Germany into a cross-sectional study. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to evaluate the factor structure of the ECR-items. Cronbach's alpha was used to assess internal consistency. The results related to the short form of the ECR are in line with those of the German full-length version of the measure (ECR-RD 36). Internal consistencies were in an adequate range. The ECR short form can be recommended as a screening measure of attachment styles in primary care.

Project description:Background/objectivesThe General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ) was developed in the 1990s and has been widely used. Since then advances in understanding of associations between diet and disease have led to changes in dietary recommendations. This study reports the validity and reliability of an updated version of the GNKQ, bringing it into line with current nutritional advice.Methods/subjectsFollowing a review of current recommendations, the revised version of the GNKQ (GNKQ-R) was created, consisting of 88 items and four sections. Reliability and validity of the GNKQ-R were determined in four validation studies: (1) reliability was examined using an online sample (n=266), (2) construct validity was assessed with 96 Dietetics students and 89 english students using the 'known-groups' method, (3) associations between nutrition knowledge and socio-demographic characteristics were examined using the previously described samples and (4) sensitivity to change was tested by measuring GNKQ-R scores pre- and post-exposure to online nutrition information in written (n=65) and video (n=41) formats.ResultsThe reliability was >0.7 in all sections. Dietetics students scored significantly higher than english students. As predicted, GNKQ-R scores were significantly higher among females vs males, people with a degree vs without, and people with very good vs poor or good health status. They were lower in those older than 50 years vs younger adults. GNKQ-R scores were significantly greater after the nutrition interventions in both written and video formats.ConclusionsThe GNKQ-R is a valid measure of nutrition knowledge that is consistent, reliable and sensitive to change.

Project description:The Revised Hearing Handicap Inventory-Screening (RHHI-S) is a robust 10-item Patient-Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) that can quantify impacts of hearing loss (HL). Employing a cross-sectional study, the psychometric properties of a cross-culturally adapted Kurdish version of RHHI-S (RHHI-S-CK) were investigated. According to the degrees of HL, 168 enrollees (64.3% male; mean-age 63.1 ± 12.6 years) were divided into three subgroups; that is, mild (n = 56; 67.9% male; mean-age 60 ± 12.5 years), moderate (n = 64; 60.9% male; mean-age 64.6 ± 12.5), & moderately-severe (n = 48; 64.6% male; mean-age 63.1 ± 12.6). The internal cohesion among the items was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha (0.94). Confirmatory factor analysis recognised structural validity when a strong unidimensional factor was extracted. Convergent validity was verified (P-value < 0.001) via Spearman's correlation between the scale and a subjective correlator (visual analogue scale). A large effect size (0.88) from Kruskal-Wallis & Dunn-Bonferroni post-hoc tests established the discrimination between different degrees of HL. Lastly, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) proved the external reliability of the adapted version of the tool (Test-retest ICC = 0.95). RHHI-S-CK is a robust PROM that can measure the impacts of HL in adults across all age ranges. Accordingly, RHHI-S-CK augmented the clinical and academic practice of the Kurdish medical community.

Project description:ObjectiveThe current study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the revised general nutrition knowledge questionnaire (GNKQ-R) for adults.DesignThe eighty-eight-item English GNKQ-R was adapted into an eighty-six-item Arabic version. Four validation studies were conducted for internal (n 805) and external (n 106) reliability, construct validity between participants with (n 84) and without (n 88) nutrition background, convergent validity for associations between nutrition knowledge and demographic characteristics (n 750) and responsiveness to online nutrition information (n 55).SettingUnited Arab Emirates University in United Arab Emirates and Hashemite University in Jordan.ParticipantsUndergraduate students aged 18 years and above, enrolled in any programme at the two universities, were recruited.ResultsOverall, internal reliability (Cronbach's α = 0·91) and external reliability (P = 0·350; intra-class correlation coefficient = 0·84) were high. Significantly higher GNKQ-R scores of students with (66·0 (10·6)) v. without (38·0 (10·7), P < 0·001; d = 2·6) nutrition background indicated high construct validity. Significantly higher GNKQ-R scores among females v. males, older and senior students v. younger and junior students and students in health discipline v. non-health discipline reflected good convergent validity. Significant differences in GNKQ-R scores with nutrition information (time 1 = 37·8 (10·5) and time 2 = 47·7 (9·1), P < 0·001; d = 1·0) indicated high responsiveness to nutrition intervention.ConclusionsThe Arabic GNKQ-R showed high reliability and validity in the young adult Arab population. Besides the reliability of the overall questionnaire, each section demonstrated adequate reliability. Further studies are warranted to establish the generalisability and applicability of the Arabic GNKQ-R in older adults and in different middle-eastern Arab countries.

Project description:Objective:In this study we investigated whether current mood states of patients with bipolar disorder have an influence on the screening accuracy of the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ). Methods:A total of 452 patients with mood disorder (including 192 with major depressive disorder and 260 with bipolar disorder completed the Korean version of the MDQ. Patients with bipolar disorder were subdivided into three groups (bipolar depressed only, bipolar euthymic only, bipolar manic/hypomanic only) according to current mood states. The screening accuracy of the MDQ including sensitivity, specificity and area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were evaluated according to current mood states. Results:The optimal cutoff of MDQ was 5 in this study sample. Sensitivity and specificity were not significantly different according to current mood states. Significant differences in AUCs of four independent ROC curves were not found (ROC 1st curve included all bipolar patients; ROC 2nd curve included only bipolar depressed patients; ROC 3rd curve included only bipolar manic/hypomanic patients; ROC 4th curve included only bipolar euthymic patients). Conclusion:The study results showed that current mood states (either euthymic state, depressed or manic/hypomanic) did not significantly influence the screening accuracy of the MDQ suggesting that the MDQ could be a useful screening instrument for detecting bipolar disorder in clinical practice regardless of the current mood symptoms of subjects.

Project description:The COVID Stress Scales (CSS) are a new self-report instrument for multidimensional assessment of psychological stress in the context of the pandemic. The CSS have now been translated and validated in over 20 languages, but a validated German version has not yet been available. Therefore, the aim was to develop a German version of the CSS, to test its factor structure, reliability, and validity, and to compare it with international studies. In an online survey (08/2020-06/2021), N = 1774 individuals from the German general population (71.5% female; Mage = 41.2 years, SD = 14.2) completed the CSS as well as questionnaires on related constructs and psychopathology. After eight weeks, participants were asked to participate again for the purpose of calculating retest reliability (N = 806). For the German version, the 6-factor structure with good model fit (Root Mean Square Error of Approximation, RMSEA = 0.06) was confirmed, with the six subscales: Danger, Socio-Economic Consequences, Xenophobia, Contamination, Traumatic Stress, and Compulsive Checking. Internal consistencies ranged from ω = .82-.94 (except Compulsive Checking ω = .70), and retest reliability from rtt = .62-.82. Convergent and discriminant validity were confirmed for the German version. Related constructs such as health anxiety, general xenophobia, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms correlated moderately with the respective subscale and lower with the other scales. With anxiety and depression, Traumatic Stress showed the strongest correlation. Overall, there was a high degree of agreement in an international comparison. The CSS can help to identify pandemic-related psychological stress and to derive appropriate interventions.

Project description:PurposeThis study sought to identify the changes and potential association between sleep characteristics and short-term memory, and mood states among volunteers at different altitudes and times.MethodA total of 26 healthy volunteers were recruited from the PLA General Hospital, and we conducted a longitudinal prospective survey for over 1 year from November 2019 to April 2021. First, we collected demographic data, sleep parameters by overnight polysomnography (PSG), short-term memory by digit span test, and mood states by completing a questionnaire with a brief profile of mood states among participants in the plain (53 m). Then, we continuously followed them up to collect data in the 3rd month at an altitude of 1,650 m (on the 3rd month of the 1-year survey period), the 3rd month at an altitude of 4,000 m (on the 6th month of the 1-year survey period), and the 9th month at an altitude of 4,000 m (on the 12th month of the 1-year survey period). Multiple linear regression analysis was used to construct models between sleep parameters and short-term memory, and mood states.ResultsThe prevalence of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) significantly increased with rising elevation (P < 0.01). The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), the mean apnea time (MAT), the longest apnea time (LAT), and the duration of time with SaO2 < 90% (TSA90) were increased (P < 0.05), and the mean pulse oxygen saturation (MSpO2), the lowest pulse oxygen saturation (LSpO2), and heart rate were significantly decreased with increasing altitude (P < 0.05). Digit span scores were decreased with increasing altitude (P < 0.001). A negative mood was more severe and a positive mood increasingly faded with rising elevation (P < 0.001). Additionally, linear correlation analysis showed that higher AHI, LAT, and MAT were strongly associated with a greater decline in short-term memory (in the 3rd and 9th month at an altitude of 4,000 m, respectively: r s = -0.897, -0.901; r s = -0.691, -0.749; r s = -0.732, -0.794, P < 0.001), and also were strongly associated with more severe negative mood (in the 3rd month at altitudes of 1,650 m and 4,000 m, respectively: r s = 0.655, 0.715, 0.724; r s = 0.771, 0.638, 0.737, P < 0.000625). Multiple linear regression pointed out that AHI was a significant predictor of negative mood among people at different altitudes (in the 3rd month at an altitude of 1,650 m: TMD = 33.161 + 6.495*AHI; in the 3rd month at an altitude of 4,000 m: TMD = 74.247 + 1.589*AHI, P < 0.05).ConclusionSAS developed easily in high altitudes, most often in CSA (central sleep apnea, CSA). The sleep, short-term memory, and negative mood were significantly more damaged with elevation in volunteers. Sleep parameters were closely associated with short-term memory and mood states in volunteers at high altitudes; the higher the sleep parameters (AHI, LAT, and MAT) scores, the more significant the mood disorders and the more obvious impairment of short-term memory. AHI was a critical predictor of the negative mood of volunteers at different altitudes. This study provides evidence that could help with the prevention and control of sleep disorder, cognitive disorder, and negative mood among populations with high altitudes.

Project description:BackgroundPersistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a functional disorder of the nervous system and currently one of the most common types of chronic dizziness. Currently existing questionnaires do not fully assess patients' specific symptoms of PPPD. The Japanese Niigata PPPD Questionnaire (NPQ) was recently developed following consensus-based diagnosis criteria. The aim of this study was to translate it into German, evaluate its content with the help of experts and patients and, if necessary, revise the original version to allow for a comprehensive assessment of patients' PPPD-related symptoms.MethodsA 3-round expert Delphi survey and semi-structured patient interviews were conducted. 28 experts from Switzerland, Germany and Austria working in hospitals or outpatient centres were asked to complete a first questionnaire on various aspects of PPPD, on the translated, original NPQ and their own related experiences (Round one), a second questionnaire with statements regarding PPPD they could agree or disagree with using a 6-point Likert-scale (Round two), and a third survey to finally reach a consensus on statements to be integrated into the NPQ. In addition, eleven patients (mean age of 64.6±12.6 years; 6 females) were selected according to the criteria for the diagnosis of PPPD proposed by the Bárány Society and participated in a semi-structured interview asking for their opinion on the content of the original NPQ. All collected data were analysed using a descriptive evaluation and a qualitative content analysis based on verbatim transcripts.ResultsSeven new items were added to the NPQ based on expert and patient comments and ratings. Its revised version (NPQ-R) comprises 19 items divided into five subscales using a 7-point Likert-scale with two additional subscales relating to associated symptoms and symptom behaviour in PPPD. The new maximal score is 114 points compared to 72 for the NPQ.ConclusionThe NPQ-R is the first patient-reported outcome measurement for patients with PPPD in German. It should help to provide a comprehensive assessment of the intensity of PPPD in affected patients.
