Acoustic resonance and atomization for gas-liquid systems in microreactors.

ABSTRACT: It is shown that a liquid slug in gas-liquid segmented flow in microchannels can act as an acoustic resonator to disperse large amounts of small liquid droplets, commonly referred to as atomization, into the gas phase. We investigate the principles of acoustic resonance within a liquid slug through experimental analysis and numerical simulation. A mechanism of atomization in the confined channels and a hypothesis based on high-speed image analysis that links acoustic resonance within a liquid slug with the observed atomization is proposed. The observed phenomenon provides a novel source of confined micro sprays and could be an avenue, amongst others, to overcome mass transfer limitations for gas-liquid processes in flow.

Acoustic Fountains and Atomization at Liquid Surfaces Excited by Diagnostic Ultrasound.

Project description:Pulmonary capillary hemorrhage (PCH) has been found in mammalian lungs exposed to diagnostic ultrasound (DUS), although the mechanism is poorly understood. This work investigates acoustic atomization and fountains at liquid-air interfaces subjected to DUS, which has been suggested as a possible PCH damage mechanism. Primarily using a SuperSonic Imagine Aixplorer DUS machine (SuperSonic Imagine, Aix-en-Provence, France), blood and water surfaces were excited in vitro by DUS and recorded with a high-speed camera. The surface was driven by B-mode, color Doppler, pulsed Doppler, and shear wave elastography imaging modes with center frequencies from 5.0-7.2 MHz and mechanical indexes (MI) up to 1.7. Fountains and atomization were only observed for SWE, for MI as low as 1.0. A comparison of the SWE waveforms with the surface dynamics suggests that fountains and atomization were driven by push-pulses and depended on pulse duration and intensity. However, we conclude that atomization and fountaining are unlikely primary mechanisms behind all DUS-induced PCH because neither phenomenon occurred for traditional diagnostic imaging modes.

Analysis of dynamic acoustic resonance effects in a sonicated gas-liquid flow microreactor.

Project description:In this work, we characterize acoustic resonance phenomena occurring between gas bubbles in a segmented gas-liquid flow in a microchannel irradiated with a frequency around 500 kHz. A large acoustic amplitude can be reached, leading to gas-liquid interface deformation, atomization of micrometer sized droplets, and cavitation. A numerical approach combining an acoustic frequency-domain solver and a Lagrangian Surface-Evolver solver is introduced to predict the acoustic deformation of gas-liquid interfaces and the dynamic acoustic magnitude. The numerical approach and its assumptions were validated with experiments, for which a good agreement was observed. Therefore, this numerical approach allows to provide a description and an understanding of the acoustic nature of these phenomena. The acoustic pressure magnitude can reach hundreds of kPa to tens of MPa, and these values are consistent with the observation of atomization and cavitation in the experiments. Furthermore, volume of fluid simulations were performed to predict the atomization threshold, which was then related to acoustic resonance. It is found that dynamic acoustic resonance gives rise to atomization bursts at the gas bubble surface. The presented approach can be applied to more complex acoustic fields involving more complex channel geometries, vibration patterns, or two-phase flow patterns.

Multiphase Microreactors Based on Liquid-Liquid and Gas-Liquid Dispersions Stabilized by Colloidal Catalytic Particles.

Project description:Pickering emulsions, foams, bubbles, and marbles are dispersions of two immiscible liquids or of a liquid and a gas stabilized by surface-active colloidal particles. These systems can be used for engineering liquid-liquid-solid and gas-liquid-solid microreactors for multiphase reactions. They constitute original platforms for reengineering multiphase reactors towards a higher degree of sustainability. This Review provides a systematic overview on the recent progress of liquid-liquid and gas-liquid dispersions stabilized by solid particles as microreactors for engineering eco-efficient reactions, with emphasis on biobased reagents. Physicochemical driving parameters, challenges, and strategies to (de)stabilize dispersions for product recovery/catalyst recycling are discussed. Advanced concepts such as cascade and continuous flow reactions, compartmentalization of incompatible reagents, and multiscale computational methods for accelerating particle discovery are also addressed.

Ultrasonic atomization of liquids in drop-chain acoustic fountains.

Project description:When focused ultrasound waves of moderate intensity in liquid encounter an air interface, a chain of drops emerges from the liquid surface to form what is known as a drop-chain fountain. Atomization, or the emission of micro-droplets, occurs when the acoustic intensity exceeds a liquid-dependent threshold. While the cavitation-wave hypothesis, which states that atomization arises from a combination of capillary-wave instabilities and cavitation bubble oscillations, is currently the most accepted theory of atomization, more data on the roles of cavitation, capillary waves, and even heat deposition or boiling would be valuable. In this paper, we experimentally test whether bubbles are a significant mechanism of atomization in drop-chain fountains. High-speed photography was used to observe the formation and atomization of drop-chain fountains composed of water and other liquids. For a range of ultrasonic frequencies and liquid sound speeds, it was found that the drop diameters approximately equalled the ultrasonic wavelengths. When water was exchanged for other liquids, it was observed that the atomization threshold increased with shear viscosity. Upon heating water, it was found that the time to commence atomization decreased with increasing temperature. Finally, water was atomized in an overpressure chamber where it was found that atomization was significantly diminished when the static pressure was increased. These results indicate that bubbles, generated by either acoustic cavitation or boiling, contribute significantly to atomization in the drop-chain fountain.

Acoustic Atomization-Induced Pumping Based on a Vibrating Sharp-Tip Capillary.

Project description:Pumping is an essential component in many microfluidic applications. Developing simple, small-footprint, and flexible pumping methods is of great importance to achieve truly lab-on-a-chip systems. Here, we report a novel acoustic pump based on the atomization effect induced by a vibrating sharp-tip capillary. As the liquid is atomized by the vibrating capillary, negative pressure is generated to drive the movement of fluid without the need to fabricate special microstructures or use special channel materials. We studied the influence of the frequency, input power, internal diameter (ID) of the capillary tip, and liquid viscosity on the pumping flow rate. By adjusting the ID of the capillary from 30 µm to 80 µm and the power input from 1 Vpp to 5 Vpp, a flow rate range of 3 to 520 µL/min can be achieved. We also demonstrated the simultaneous operation of two pumps to generate parallel flow with a tunable flow rate ratio. Finally, the capability of performing complex pumping sequences was demonstrated by performing a bead-based ELISA in a 3D-printed microdevice.

Experimental research on surface acoustic wave microfluidic atomization for drug delivery.

Project description:This paper demonstrates that surface acoustic wave (SAW) atomization can produce suitable aerosol concentration and size distribution for efficient inhaled lung drug delivery and is a potential atomization device for asthma treatment. Using the SAW device, we present comprehensive experimental results exploring the complexity of the acoustic atomization process and the influence of input power, device frequency, and liquid flow rate on aerosol size distribution. It is hoped that these studies will explain the mechanism of SAW atomization aerosol generation and how they can be controlled. The insights from the high-speed flow visualization studies reveal that it is possible by setting the input power above 4.17 W, thus allowing atomization to occur from a relatively thin film, forming dense, monodisperse aerosols. Moreover, we found that the aerosol droplet size can be effectively changed by adjusting the input power and liquid flow rate to change the film conditions. In this work, we proposed a method to realize drug atomization by a microfluidic channel. A SU-8 flow channel was prepared on the surface of a piezoelectric substrate by photolithography technology. Combined with the silicon dioxide coating process and PDMS process closed microfluidic channel was prepared, and continuous drug atomization was provided to improve the deposition efficiency of drug atomization by microfluidic.

Transient spray combustion characteristics in a gas-liquid pintle rocket engine under acoustic excitation.

Project description:In order to investigate the acoustic oscillation characteristics of gas-liquid pintle rocket engines and elucidate the path by which spray combustion process provides energy to the combustor pressure oscillation, a LOX/GCH4 pintle engine with rectangular combustor was designed. By adding transverse velocity disturbance for the first time, the acoustic response of spray combustion process was simulated, and the effect of excitation amplitude on acoustic response was researched. Numerical results show that the adopted transverse velocity disturbance can excite the first-order transverse acoustic oscillation with same excitation frequency in the engine combustor. The acoustic response maintenance mechanism under extrinsic excitation is summarized for pintle engines. Besides, the temperature distribution inside the engine combustor tends to be uniform, and the low-frequency oscillation caused by the flame transverse swing gradually disappears. The amplitude of combustor pressure oscillation is dominated by excitement amplitude and phase difference between the pressure and heat release in combustion reaction region. In addition, the time-averaged combustor pressure can be amplified mainly by transverse velocity disturbance. The research work can provide a reference for related fire tests on the acoustic response of a subscale gas-liquid pintle engine.

Synthetic catalysts for N2 O decomposition typically contain precious metals and/or operate at elevated temperatures driving a desire for more sustainable alternatives. Here we demonstrate self-assembly of liposomal microreactors enabling catalytic reduction of N2 O to the climate neutral product N2 . Photoexcitation of graphitic N-doped carbon dots delivers electrons to encapsulated N2 O Reductase enzymes via a lipid-soluble biomolecular wire provided by the MtrCAB protein complex. Within the microreactor, electron transfer from MtrCAB to N2 O Reductase is facilitated by the general redox mediator methyl viologen. The liposomal microreactors use only earth-abundant elements to catalyze N2 O removal in ambient, aqueous conditions.

Resonance control of acoustic focusing systems through an environmental reference table and impedance spectroscopy.

Project description:Acoustic standing waves can precisely focus flowing particles or cells into tightly positioned streams for interrogation or downstream separations. The efficiency of an acoustic standing wave device is dependent upon operating at a resonance frequency. Small changes in a system's temperature and sample salinity can shift the device's resonance condition, leading to poor focusing. Practical implementation of an acoustic standing wave system requires an automated resonance control system to adjust the standing wave frequency in response to environmental changes. Here we have developed a rigorous approach for quantifying the optimal acoustic focusing frequency at any given environmental condition. We have demonstrated our approach across a wide range of temperature and salinity conditions to provide a robust characterization of how the optimal acoustic focusing resonance frequency shifts across these conditions. To generalize these results, two microfluidic bulk acoustic standing wave systems (a steel capillary and an etched silicon wafer) were examined. Models of these temperature and salinity effects suggest that it is the speed of sound within the liquid sample that dominates the resonance frequency shift. Using these results, a simple reference table can be generated to predict the optimal resonance condition as a function of temperature and salinity. Additionally, we show that there is a local impedance minimum associated with the optimal system resonance. The integration of the environmental results for coarse frequency tuning followed by a local impedance characterization for fine frequency adjustments, yields a highly accurate method of resonance control. Such an approach works across a wide range of environmental conditions, is easy to automate, and could have a significant impact across a wide range of microfluidic acoustic standing wave systems.
