Efficient ethylene purification by a robust ethane-trapping porous organic cage.

ABSTRACT: The removal of ethane (C₂H₆) from its analogous ethylene (C₂H₄) is of paramount importance in the petrochemical industry, but highly challenging due to their similar physicochemical properties. The use of emerging porous organic cage (POC) materials for C₂H₆/C₂H₄ separation is still in its infancy. Here, we report the benchmark example of a truncated octahedral calix[4]resorcinarene-based POC adsorbent (CPOC-301), preferring to adsorb C₂H₆ than C₂H₄, and thus can be used as a robust absorbent to directly separate high-purity C₂H₄ from the C₂H₆/C₂H₄ mixture. Molecular modelling studies suggest the exceptional C₂H₆ selectivity is due to the suitable resorcin[4]arene cavities in CPOC-301, which form more multiple C-H···π hydrogen bonds with C₂H₆ than with C₂H₄ guests. This work provides a fresh avenue to utilize POC materials for highly selective separation of industrially important hydrocarbons.

Efficient purification of ethene by an ethane-trapping metal-organic framework.

Project description:Separating ethene (C2H4) from ethane (C2H6) is of paramount importance and difficulty. Here we show that C2H4 can be efficiently purified by trapping the inert C2H6 in a judiciously designed metal-organic framework. Under ambient conditions, passing a typical cracked gas mixture (15:1 C2H4/C2H6) through 1 litre of this C2H6 selective adsorbent directly produces 56 litres of C2H4 with 99.95%+ purity (required by the C2H4 polymerization reactor) at the outlet, with a single breakthrough operation, while other C2H6 selective materials can only produce ca. ⩽ litre, and conventional C2H4 selective adsorbents require at least four adsorption-desorption cycles to achieve the same C2H4 purity. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and computational simulation studies showed that the exceptional C2H6 selectivity arises from the proper positioning of multiple electronegative and electropositive functional groups on the ultramicroporous pore surface, which form multiple C-H···N hydrogen bonds with C2H6 instead of the more polar competitor C2H4.

Adsorptive Separation of Methylfuran and Dimethylfuran by a Robust Porous Organic Cage.

Project description:As vital raw materials in the chemical industry, 2-methylfuran (MeF) and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMeF) are commonly produced as mixtures. The selective separation of MeF and DMeF is crucial yet challenging, with significant industrial and economic implications. This study presents an energy-efficient separation technique using a robust calix[4]resorcinarene-based supramolecular porous organic cage (POC), CPOC-301, to effectively capture DMeF from an equimolar MeF/DMeF mixture within 2 h, yielding 95.3% purity. The exceptional separation efficiency stems from the superior structural stability of CPOC-301, maintaining its initial porous crystalline structure during separation. Calculations show that CPOC-301 forms more C-H···π hydrogen bonds with DMeF versus MeF, accounting for its DMeF selectivity. CPOC-301 can be easily regenerated via heat under a vacuum and reused for over five adsorption-desorption cycles without significant performance loss. This work introduces an approach to separate similar organic molecules effectively using POC materials.

Preferential Adsorption Performance of Ethane in a Robust Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Separating Ethane from Ethylene.

Project description:Development of an ethane-selective adsorbent to separate ethane from ethylene is a challenging issue with great significance for ethylene purification. The adsorptive separation technique based on physical adsorption holds a great promise to address this issue. Herein, we report a robust ethane-selective metal-organic framework, Ni(BODC)(TED), and investigate its separation performance on C2H6/C2H4. The as-synthesized Ni(BODC)(TED) exhibits excellent water vapor stability and high capacity of C2H6 molecules with an uptake of 3.36 mmol/g at 298 K and 100 kPa, higher than those of many adsorbents reported in recent years. Its C2H6/C2H4 selectivity predicted by the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) model reaches 1.79. A molecular simulation is applied to unveil the preferential adsorption mechanism of ethane. Calculation shows that five strong C-H···H interactions are formed between C2H6 and the framework of Ni(BODC)(TED), and the isosteric heat of ethane on Ni(BODC)(TED) is 27.02 kJ/mol, higher than that of ethylene, resulting in preferential adsorption of ethane. Ni(BODC)(TED) would become a promising member of the family of ethane-selective materials for the industrial separation of ethane from ethylene.

Efficient Propylene/Ethylene Separation in Highly Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Light olefins are important raw materials in the petrochemical industry for the production of many chemical products. In the past few years, remarkable progress has been made in the synthesis of light olefins (C2-C4) from methanol or syngas. The separation of light olefins by porous materials is, therefore, an intriguing research topic. In this work, single-component ethylene (C2H4) and propylene (C3H6) gas adsorption and binary C3H6/C2H4 (1:9) gas breakthrough experiments have been performed for three highly porous isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) denoted as Fe2M-L (M = Mn2+, Co2+, or Ni2+), three representative MOFs, namely ZIF-8 (also known as MAF-4), MIL-101(Cr), and HKUST-1, as well as an activated carbon (activated coconut charcoal, SUPELCO©). Single-component gas adsorption studies reveal that Fe2M-L, HKUST-1, and activated carbon show much higher C3H6 adsorption capacities than MIL-101(Cr) and ZIF-8, HKUST-1 and activated carbon have relatively high C3H6/C2H4 adsorption selectivity, and the C2H4 and C3H6 adsorption heats of Fe2Mn-L, MIL-101(Cr), and ZIF-8 are relatively low. Binary gas breakthrough experiments indicate all the adsorbents selectively adsorb C3H6 from C3H6/C2H4 mixture to produce purified C2H4, and 842, 515, 504, 271, and 181 cm3 g-1 C2H4 could be obtained for each breakthrough tests for HKUST-1, activated carbon, Fe2Mn-L, MIL-101(Cr), and ZIF-8, respectively. It is worth noting that C3H6 and C2H4 desorption dynamics of Fe2Mn-L are clearly faster than that of HKUST-1 or activated carbon, suggesting that Fe2M-L are promising adsorbents for C3H6/C2H4 separation with low energy penalty in regeneration.

Pillar-layer Zn-triazolate-dicarboxylate frameworks with a customized pore structure for efficient ethylene purification from ethylene/ethane/acetylene ternary mixtures.

Project description:The selective adsorption of C2H6 and C2H2 over C2H4 from C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 ternary mixtures for one-step C2H4 purification represents a crucial yet challenging task in industry. The pore structure of the adsorbents must be finely tailored to meet the demanding requirements for the separation considering the very similar physicochemical properties of the three gases. Herein, we report a Zn-triazolate-dicarboxylate framework, HIAM-210, featuring a novel topology which possesses one-dimensional channels decorated with adjacent uncoordinated carboxylate-O atoms. The suitable pore size and customized pore environment enable the compound to selectively capture C2H6 and C2H2 with high C2H2/C2H4 and C2H6/C2H4 selectivities of both 2.0. Breakthrough experiments show that polymer-grade C2H4 can be directly harvested from C2H2/C2H4/C2H6 (34/33/33 and 1/90/9) ternary mixtures. The underlying mechanism of the preferential adsorption was uncovered by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and DFT calculations.

Oriented Two-Dimensional Porous Organic Cage Crystals.

Project description:The formation of two-dimensional (2D) oriented porous organic cage crystals (consisting of imine-based tetrahedral molecules) on various substrates (such as silicon wafers and glass) by solution-processing is reported. Insight into the crystallinity, preferred orientation, and cage crystal growth was obtained by experimental and computational techniques. For the first time, structural defects in porous molecular materials were observed directly and the defect concentration could be correlated with crystal growth rate. These oriented crystals suggest potential for future applications, such as solution-processable molecular crystalline 2D membranes for molecular separations.

Porous Organic Cage-Based Quasi-Solid-State Electrolyte with Cavity-Induced Anion-Trapping Effect for Long-Life Lithium Metal Batteries.

Project description:Porous organic cages (POCs) with permanent porosity and excellent host-guest property hold great potentials in regulating ion transport behavior, yet their feasibility as solid-state electrolytes has never been testified in a practical battery. Herein, we design and fabricate a quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSSE) based on a POC to enable the stable operation of Li-metal batteries (LMBs). Benefiting from the ordered channels and cavity-induced anion-trapping effect of POC, the resulting POC-based QSSE exhibits a high Li+ transference number of 0.67 and a high ionic conductivity of 1.25 × 10-4 S cm-1 with a low activation energy of 0.17 eV. These allow for homogeneous Li deposition and highly reversible Li plating/stripping for over 2000 h. As a proof of concept, the LMB assembled with POC-based QSSE demonstrates extremely stable cycling performance with 85% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. Therefore, our work demonstrates the practical applicability of POC as SSEs for LMBs and could be extended to other energy-storage systems, such as Na and K batteries.

Purification of Propylene and Ethylene by a Robust Metal-Organic Framework Mediated by Host-Guest Interactions.

Project description:Industrial purification of propylene and ethylene requires cryogenic distillation and selective hydrogenation over palladium catalysts to remove propane, ethane and/or trace amounts of acetylene. Here, we report the excellent separation of equimolar mixtures of propylene/propane and ethylene/ethane, and of a 1/100 mixture of acetylene/ethylene by a highly robust microporous material, MFM-520, under dynamic conditions. In situ synchrotron single crystal X-ray diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and analysis of adsorption thermodynamic parameters reveal that a series of synergistic host-guest interactions involving hydrogen bonding and π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions underpin the cooperative binding of alkenes within the pore. Notably, the optimal pore geometry of the material enables selective accommodation of acetylene. The practical potential of this porous material has been demonstrated by fabricating mixed-matrix membranes comprising MFM-520, Matrimid and PIM-1, and these exhibit not only a high permeability for propylene (≈1984 Barrer), but also a separation factor of 7.8 for an equimolar mixture of propylene/propane at 298 K.

Three-dimensional protonic conductivity in porous organic cage solids.

Project description:Proton conduction is a fundamental process in biology and in devices such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To maximize proton conduction, three-dimensional conduction pathways are preferred over one-dimensional pathways, which prevent conduction in two dimensions. Many crystalline porous solids to date show one-dimensional proton conduction. Here we report porous molecular cages with proton conductivities (up to 10(-3) S cm(-1) at high relative humidity) that compete with extended metal-organic frameworks. The structure of the organic cage imposes a conduction pathway that is necessarily three-dimensional. The cage molecules also promote proton transfer by confining the water molecules while being sufficiently flexible to allow hydrogen bond reorganization. The proton conduction is explained at the molecular level through a combination of proton conductivity measurements, crystallography, molecular simulations and quasi-elastic neutron scattering. These results provide a starting point for high-temperature, anhydrous proton conductors through inclusion of guests other than water in the cage pores.

A Robust Porous Quinoline Cage: Transformation of a [4+6] Salicylimine Cage by Povarov Cyclization.

Project description:Porous shape-persistent organic cages have become the object of interest in recent years because they are soluble and thus processable from solution. A variety of cages can be achieved by applying dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC), but they are less chemically stable. Here the transformation of a salicylimine cage into a quinoline cage by a twelve-fold Povarov reaction as the key step is described. Besides the chemical stability of the cage over a broad pH regime, it shows a unique absorption and emission depending on acid concentration. Furthermore, thin films for the vapor detection of acids were investigated, showing color switches from pale-yellow to red, and characteristic emission profiles.
