Reflectivity relates differently to pro sociality in naive and strategic subjects.

ABSTRACT: Is pro sociality a natural impulse or the result of a self-controlled behavior? We investigate this issue in a lab in the field experiment with participants from the general adult population in Italy. We find two key results: first, that there is a positive relationship between pro sociality and strategic reasoning. Second, that reflectivity relates to lower pro sociality but only among strategic subjects, indicating that the intuitive view of pro sociality is valid only among strategic individuals. Non-strategic individuals are instead intuitively selfish. We surmise that these results emerge due to a common cognitive root between strategizing and pro sociality, namely empathy.

Project description:We study the relationship between pro-social preferences and strategic reasoning. These aspects are typically studied separately but little is known about their joint distribution. In an experiment, for each participant we elicit individual concerns toward pro-sociality-inequality aversion and efficiency-as well as the number of steps of reasoning through a guessing game. We report that self-regarding and pro-social participants exhibit similar levels of strategic reasoning, which supports the view that pro-sociality and strategic reasoning can be studied independently.

Religious pro-sociality? Experimental evidence from a sample of 766 Spaniards.

Project description:This study explores the relationship between several personal religion-related variables and social behaviour, using three paradigmatic economic games: the dictator (DG), ultimatum (UG), and trust (TG) games. A large carefully designed sample of the urban adult population in Granada (Spain) is employed (N = 766). From participants' decisions in these games we obtain measures of altruism, bargaining behaviour and sense of fairness/equality, trust, and positive reciprocity. Three dimensions of religiosity are examined: (i) religious denomination; (ii) intensity of religiosity, measured by active participation at church services; and (iii) conversion out into a different denomination than the one raised in. The major results are: (i) individuals with "no religion" made decisions closer to rational selfish behaviour in the DG and the UG compared to those who affiliate with a "standard" religious denomination; (ii) among Catholics, intensity of religiosity is the key variable that affects social behaviour insofar as religiously-active individuals are generally more pro-social than non-active ones; and (iii) the religion raised in seems to have no effect on pro-sociality, beyond the effect of the current measures of religiosity. Importantly, behaviour in the TG is not predicted by any of the religion-related variables we analyse. While the results partially support the notion of religious pro-sociality, on the other hand, they also highlight the importance of closely examining the multidimensional nature of both religiosity and pro-social behaviour.

Manipulation of Pro-Sociality and Rule-Following with Non-invasive Brain Stimulation.

Project description:Decisions are often governed by rules on adequate social behaviour. Recent research suggests that the right lateral prefrontal cortex (rLPFC) is involved in the implementation of internal fairness rules (norms), by controlling the impulse to act selfishly. A drawback of these studies is that the assumed norms and impulses have to be deduced from behaviour and that norm-following and pro-sociality are indistinguishable. Here, we directly confronted participants with a rule that demanded to make advantageous or disadvantageous monetary allocations for themselves or another person. To disentangle its functional role in rule-following and pro-sociality, we divergently manipulated the rLPFC by applying cathodal or anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Cathodal tDCS increased participants' rule-following, even of rules that demanded to lose money or hurt another person financially. In contrast, anodal tDCS led participants to specifically violate more often those rules that were at odds with what participants chose freely. Brain stimulation over the rLPFC thus did not simply increase or decrease selfishness. Instead, by disentangling rule-following and pro-sociality, our results point to a broader role of the rLPFC in integrating the costs and benefits of rules in order to align decisions with internal goals, ultimately enabling to flexibly adapt social behaviour.

Does pro-sociality or trust better predict staying home behavior during the Covid-19?

Project description:Voluntary compliance of preventive and mitigation measures due to social concerns can play a crucial role in slowing down the spread of the Covid-19. The existing economic models for disease spread however do not direct a lot of focus on the possible role of pro-social behavior and general trust in predicting preventive behaviors amid the Covid-19. Therefore, this study analyzes whether pro-sociality and general trust measured in the short run (2020 and 2019) and in the long run (2015 and 2010) predict attitudes towards the stay home behavior and the intended stay home behavior in case the government mandates it due to the Covid-19 in the Netherlands. The results suggest that these preferences positively influence attitudes towards staying home behavior. However, trust in comparison to pro-sociality is a stable and robust predictor of stay home attitudes both in the short as well as long run. On the other hand, neither trust nor pro-sociality influences the intended stay home behavior in case the government mandates the lockdown, and it is most likely due to the timing of the survey coinciding with a significant drop in the Covid-19 infections and easing out of the lockdown restrictions by the Dutch government.

Wild bees respond differently to sampling traps with vanes of different colors and light reflectivity in a livestock pasture ecosystem.

Project description:Wild bees are important pollinators and monitoring their abundance and diversity is necessary to develop conservation protocols. It is imperative to understand differences in sampling efficiency among different trap types to help guide monitoring efforts. This study used a new vane trap design to collect bees in a livestock pasture ecosystem and examined the impact of six different vane colors on wild bee sampling. We recorded 2230 bees comprising 49 species and five families. The most abundant species were Augochlorella aurata (25.8%), Lasioglossum disparile (18.3%), Lasioglossum imitatum (10.85%), Agapostemon texanus (10.8%), Melissodes vernoniae (9.9%) and Halictus ligatus (4.7%). Traps with bright blue vanes captured the greatest number and diversity of bees as compared to traps with bright yellow, dark blue, dark yellow, and purple vanes. Red vanes had the lowest captures rates of individuals and species. Different colors were associated with different bee species arrays and only nine species were found in all vane color types. Vanes with higher light reflectance properties (within 400-600 nm range) attracted the greatest number of bees. These results show that different light wavelengths and reflectivity of vane traps influence bee capture rates, and such findings can help optimize bee sampling methods in different ecosystems.

Fatigue in levodopa-naive subjects with Parkinson disease.

Project description:BackgroundFatigue is a common complaint in Parkinson disease (PD). We investigated fatigue in a cohort of previously untreated patients with early PD enrolled in the Earlier vs Later Levodopa (ELLDOPA) clinical trial.MethodsA total of 361 patients were enrolled in the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled ELLDOPA trial and assigned to receive placebo or carbidopa-levodopa 37.5/150 mg, 75/300 mg, or 150/600 mg daily for 40 weeks, followed by a 2-week medication washout period. Subjects who scored >4 on the Fatigue Severity Scale were classified as fatigued. PD severity was assessed using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Hoehn-Yahr scale, and Schwab-England Activities of Daily Living Scale. A subgroup of subjects underwent [(123)I]-beta-CIT SPECT to measure striatal dopamine transporter density.ResultsOf the 349 ELLDOPA subjects who completed fatigue measures, 128 were classified as fatigued at baseline. The fatigued group was significantly more impaired neurologically (UPDRS, all subscales and Hoehn and Yahr staging) and functionally (Schwab-England Scale) but no significant differences were observed in beta-CIT measurements between the two groups. Analysis of covariance showed a greater increase in fatigue score from baseline to the end of the 2-week washout in the placebo group (0.75 points) than in the three groups receiving levodopa (increases of 0.30 [150 mg/day], 0.36 [300 mg/day], and 0.33 [600 mg/day]; p = 0.03 for heterogeneity).ConclusionsFatigue is a frequent symptom in early, untreated, non-depressed patients with Parkinson disease (PD), affecting over 1/3 of the patients in this cohort at baseline and 50% by week 42. Fatigue was associated with the severity of PD, and progressed less in patients treated with levodopa.

Human Primary Astrocytes Differently Respond to Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Stimuli.

Project description:For a long time, astrocytes were considered a passive brain cell population. However, recently, many studies have shown that their role in the central nervous system (CNS) is more active. Previously, it was stated that there are two main functional phenotypes of astrocytes. However, nowadays, it is clear that there is rather a broad spectrum of these phenotypes. The major goal of this study was to evaluate the production of some inflammatory chemokines and neurotrophic factors by primary human astrocytes after pro- or anti-inflammatory stimulation. We observed that only astrocytes induced by inflammatory mediators TNFα/IL-1a/C1q produced CXCL10, CCL1, and CXCL13 chemokines. Unstimulated astrocytes and those cultured with anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10, or TGF-β1) did not produce these chemokines. Interestingly, astrocytes cultured in proinflammatory conditions significantly decreased the release of neurotrophic factor PDGF-A, as compared to unstimulated astrocytes. However, in response to anti-inflammatory cytokine TGF-β1, astrocytes significantly increased PDGF-A production compared to the medium alone. The production of another studied neurotrophic factor BDNF was not influenced by pro- or anti-inflammatory stimulation. The secretory response was accompanied by changes in HLA-DR, CD83, and GFAP expression. Our study confirms that astrocytes differentially respond to pro- and anti-inflammatory stimuli, especially to inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1a, and C1q, suggesting their role in leukocyte recruitment.

Anesthetic sevoflurane causes neurotoxicity differently in neonatal naive and Alzheimer disease transgenic mice.

Project description:BackgroundRecent studies have suggested that children undergoing surgery under anesthesia could be at an increased risk for the development of learning disabilities, but whether anesthetics contribute to this learning disability is unclear. Therefore, the authors set out to assess the effects of sevoflurane, the most commonly used inhalation anesthetic, on caspase activation, apoptosis, beta-amyloid protein levels, and neuroinflammation in the brain tissues of neonatal naïve and Alzheimer disease (AD) transgenic mice.MethodsSix-day-old naïve and AD transgenic (B6.Cg-Tg[amyloid precursor protein swe, PSEN1dE9]85Dbo/J) mice were treated with sevoflurane. The mice were killed at the end of the anesthesia, and the brain tissues were harvested and then subjected to Western blot, immunocytochemistry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and real-time polymerase chain reaction.ResultsHerein, the authors show for the first time that sevoflurane anesthesia induced caspase activation and apoptosis, altered amyloid precursor protein processing, and increased beta-amyloid protein levels in the brain tissues of neonatal mice. Furthermore, sevoflurane anesthesia led to a greater degree of neurotoxicity in the brain tissues of the AD transgenic mice when compared with naïve mice and increased tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels in the brain tissues of only the AD transgenic mice. Finally, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor antagonist 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate attenuated sevoflurane-induced caspase-3 activation and beta-amyloid protein accumulation in vivo.ConclusionThese results suggest that sevoflurane may induce neurotoxicity in neonatal mice. AD transgenic mice could be more vulnerable to such neurotoxicity. These findings should promote more studies to determine the potential neurotoxicity of anesthesia in animals and humans, especially in children.

Differential migratory properties of monocytes isolated from human subjects naive and non-naive to Cannabis.

Project description:This study evaluates the migratory potential of monocytes isolated from two groups of human subjects: naïve and non-naïve to Cannabis. Phytocannabinoids (pCB), the bioactive agents produced by the plant Cannabis, regulate the phenotype and function of immune cells by interacting with CB1 and CB2 receptors. It has been shown that agents influencing the phenotype of circulating monocytes influence the phenotype of macrophages and the outcome of immune responses. To date, nothing is known about the acute and long-term effects of pCB on human circulating monocytes. Healthy subjects were recruited for a single blood draw. Monocytes were isolated, fluorescently labeled and their migration quantified using a validated assay that employs near infrared fluorescence and modified Boyden chambers. CB1 and CB2 receptor mRNA expression was quantified by qPCR. Monocytes from all subjects (n = 10) responded to chemokine (c-c motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) and human serum stimuli. Acute application of pCB significantly inhibited both the basal and CCL2-stimulated migration of monocytes, but only in subjects non-naïve to Cannabis. qPCR analysis indicates that monocytes from subjects non-naïve to Cannabis express significantly more CB1 mRNA. The phenotype of monocytes isolated from subjects non-naïve to Cannabis is significantly different from monocytes isolated from subjects naïve to Cannabis. Only monocytes from subjects non-naïve to Cannabis respond to acute exposure to pCB by reducing their overall migratory capacity. Our study suggests that chronic exposure to Cannabis affects the phenotype of circulating monocytes and accordingly could influence outcome of inflammatory responses occurring in injured tissues.
