Transfer of Westermannia difficilis Dohrn to the genus Polauchenia McAtee & Malloch (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Emesinae, Emesini).

ABSTRACT: Based on the examination of its lectotype (here designated), Westermannia difficilis Dohrn, 1860 (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Emesinae, Emesini), currently included in Dohrnemesa Wygodzinsky, 1945, is transferred to the genus Polauchenia McAtee & Malloch, 1925 with the resulting new combination: Polauchenia difficilis (Dohrn, 1860), comb. nov. An updated key to the species of Polauchenia is provided.

Karyotype diversity among predatory Reduviidae (Heteroptera).

Project description:Species of infraorder Cimicomorpha of Heteroptera exhibit holokinetic chromosomes with inverted meiosis for sex chromosomes and high variation in chromosome number. The family Reduviidae, which belongs to this infraorder, is also recognized by high variability of heterochromatic bands and chromosome location of 18S rDNA loci. We studied here five species of Reduviidae (Harpactorinae) with predator habit, which are especially interesting because individuals are found solitary and dispersed in nature. These species showed striking variation in chromosome number (including sex chromosome systems), inter-chromosomal asymmetry, different number and chromosome location of 18S rDNA loci, dissimilar location and quantity of autosomal C-heterochromatin, and different types of repetitive DNA by fluorochrome banding, probably associated with occurrence of different chromosome rearrangements. Terminal chromosome location of C-heterochromatin seems to reinforce the model of equilocal dispersion of repetitive DNA families based in the "bouquet configuration".

Project description:Quasigraptocleptesmaracristinaegen. nov., sp. nov. (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Harpactorinae, Harpactorini) is described based on male and female specimens from Brazil. Photographs and comments about the syntypes of Myocorisnigriceps Burmeister, 1835, Myocorisnugax Stål, 1872, Myocoristipuliformis Burmeister, 1838 and Xystonyttusichneumoneus (Fabricius, 1803) are presented. The intra-specific variability and sexual dimorphic characteristics among specimens of Q.maracristinaesp. nov. are recorded. General characteristics of Hiranetis Spinola, 1837, Graptocleptes Stål, 1866, Quasigraptocleptesgen. nov. and Parahiranetis Gil-Santana, 2015, which seem to be closer genera, are compared, including those of the male genitalia of some species. A key to the species of Myocoris Burmeister, 1835, and an updated key to Neotropical wasp-mimicking Harpactorini genera are provided.

Revision and Phylogenetic Analysis of the Genus Phonoctonus Stal, 1853 (Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Harpactorinae).

Project description:This paper presents a taxonomic revision and phylogenetic analysis of nine known species of the genus Phonoctonus Stål, 1853, distributed exclusively in the Afrotropical region. The revision and phylogenetic analysis were performed using morphological data. A full redescription for all species is provided, taxonomical problems are clarified, and diagnostic characters are presented and illustrated. Based on the analysis, thirteen species are recognised as valid: Phonoctonus bifasciatus stat. nov., P. caesar, P. elegans, P. fairmairei stat. nov., P. fasciatus, P. grandis, P. immitis stat. rev., P. luridus, P. lutescens, P. nigrofasciatus stat. rev., P. picta stat. nov., P. picturatus stat. rev., and P. principalis. New synonymies are proposed: Phonoctonus nigrofasciatus= P. fasciatus var. poultoni syn. nov., P. picturatus = P. fasciatus var. discalis syn. nov., and P. principalis = P. validus syn. nov. An identification key to separate the species, drawings of dorsal habitus, and distribution maps of all valid species are presented. Performed morphological phylogenetic analyses indicate monophyly of the genus Phonoctonus.

Project description:The genus Salicarus Kerzhner, 1962 is revised, with differential diagnoses and redescriptions provided for nine species. Three distinct species groups were recognized within the genus: S.nitidus group (S.cavinotum, S.genistae, S.nitidus, S.perpusillus), S.roseri group (S.concinnus, S.roseri, S.urnammu), and S.fulvicornis group (S.halimodendri, S.fulvicornis). A key to species, illustrations of dorsal habitus, male and female genitalia, and selected diagnostic structures are included. Additionally, available host information and distributional records are summarized. Phoenicocorisqiliananus Zheng, 1996 is synonymized with Salicarushalimodendri V. G. Putshkov, 1977.
