Reverse ADOR: reconstruction of UTL zeolite from layered IPC-1P.

ABSTRACT: The assembly-disassembly-organisation-reassembly (ADOR) process has led to the discovery of numerous zeolite structures, albeit limited to materials with decreased pore size in relation to the parent germanosilicate zeolite. This limitation stems from the rapid decrease in d-spacing upon hydrolysis (disassembly). Nevertheless, we have artificially increased the d-spacing of layered IPC-1P by intercalating organic species. Furthermore, we have reconstructed double four rings (D4R) between layers, thus transforming IPC-1P back into the parent UTL zeolite. This reconstruction has provided not only germanosilicate but also a new, high-silica UTL zeolite (Si/Ge = 481). Therefore, our "reverse ADOR" opens up new synthetic routes towards promising extra-large-pore zeolite-based materials with new chemical compositions.

Project description:The assembly-disassembly-organization-reassembly (ADOR) process has been used to disassemble a parent zeolite with the UOV structure type and then reassemble the resulting layers into a novel structure, IPC-12. The structure of the material has previously been predicted computationally and confirmed in our experiments using X-ray diffraction and atomic resolution STEM-HAADF electron microscopy. This is the first successful application of the ADOR process to a material with porous layers.

Project description:The assembly-disassembly-organisation-reassembly (ADOR) process is an important tool to access zeolite structures that are otherwise unfeasible via hydrothermal methods. In situ flow pair distribution function (PDF) analysis has been used to probe the mechanism of the disassembly and organisation steps, with the disassembly a rapid step that is often difficult to capture. Zeolite UTL was hydrolysed by 6 M hydrochloric acid, with PDF measurements used to monitor framework alterations as the reaction proceeded. The resulting disassembly mechanism shows an initial rapid removal of germanium from the germanium-rich double 4 rings (d4r), followed by silicon rearrangement and gradual silanol condensation to form IPC-2P.

ADOR zeolite with 12 × 8 × 8-ring pores derived from IWR germanosilicate.

Project description:Zeolites have been well known for decades as catalytic materials and adsorbents and are traditionally prepared using the bottom-up synthesis method. Although it was productive for more than 250 zeolite frameworks, the conventional solvothermal synthesis approach provided limited control over the structural characteristics of the formed materials. In turn, the discovery and development of the Assembly-Disassembly-Organization-Reassembly (ADOR) strategy for the regioselective manipulation of germanosilicates enabled the synthesis of previously unattainable zeolites with predefined structures. To date, the family tree of ADOR materials has included the topological branches of UTL, UOV, IWW, *CTH, and IWV zeolites. Herein, we report on the expansion of ADOR zeolites with a new branch related to the IWR topology, which is yet unattainable experimentally but theoretically predicted as highly promising adsorbents for CO2 separation applications. The optimization of not only the chemical composition but also the dimensions of the crystalline domain in the parent IWR zeolite in the Assembly step was found to be the key to the success of its ADOR transformation into previously unknown IPC-17 zeolite with an intersecting 12 × 8 × 8-ring pore system. The structure of the as-prepared IPC-17 zeolite was verified by a combination of microscopic and diffraction techniques, while the results on the epichlorohydrin ring-opening with alcohols of variable sizes proved the molecular sieving ability of IPC-17 with potential application in heterogeneous catalysis. The proposed synthesis strategy may facilitate the discovery of zeolite materials that are difficult or yet impossible to achieve using a traditional bottom-up synthesis approach.

Core-shell zeolite@aqueous miscible organic-layered double hydroxides.

Project description:We report a general method for the synthesis of core-shell hybrid materials containing a microporous zeolite core with an aqueous miscible organic-layered double hydroxide (AMO-LDH) shell using a simple in situ coprecipitation method. For example, zeolite-HY@AMO-Mg2Al-CO3-LDH contains a 150 nm hierarchical AMO-Mg2Al-CO3-LDH surface coating on zeolite-HY. It exhibits a similar BET surface area (698 m2 g-1) as the parent zeolite-HY but this surface area has been re-allocated between microspores and mesopores. We believe that surface aluminium sites act as nucleation sites for the formation of the LDH coating and so robustly links it into the zeolite lattice. We expect that this new hybrid structure with micropores dominating in the core and mesopores populating the shell will provide a desirable new hybrid structure type for adsorption or catalysis.

Mechanochemically assisted hydrolysis in the ADOR process.

Project description:The ADOR (Assembly-Disassembly-Organisation-Reassembly) process for zeolites has been shown to produce a number of previously unknown frameworks inaccessible through conventional synthesis methods. Here, we present successful mechanochemically assisted hydrolysis of germanosilicate zeolite UTL leading to ADOR products under mild conditions, low amounts of solvent and in short reaction times. The expansion of zeolite synthesis into the realm of mechanochemistry opens up feasible pathways regarding the production of these materials, especially for industrial purposes, as well as an exciting application for economical enrichment of materials with the low natural abundance NMR-active isotope of oxygen, 17O. The results from mechanochemically assisted hydrolysis differ from those seen in the traditional ADOR approach: differences that can be attributed to a change in solvent availability.

Synthesis of the RTH-type layer: the first small-pore, two dimensional layered zeolite precursor.

Project description:There are several distinct two-dimensional zeolite building layers that can condense through different stacking arrangements of the layers to form various three-dimensional framework materials. All known building layers are dense layers in that they do not contain 8-membered ring (MR) or larger pores perpendicular to the two-dimensional layers. Herein, we report a new material (CIT-10) that consists of a two-dimensional layer (termed "rth" layer) that contains an 8 MR perpendicular to the layer. Calcination of CIT-10 forms pure-silica RTH (SSZ-50). CIT-10 can be pillared to form a new framework material with a three-dimensional pore system of 8 and 10 MRs, denoted CIT-11, that can be calcined to form a new microporous material, denoted CIT-12.

Large Diaphragm Defect Reconstruction Using Reverse Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Flap.

Project description:Surgical treatment of bronchobiliary fistula (BBF) is difficult. A 47-year-old woman presented with a cough with yellow yielding sputum due to BBF. The patient had the adhesion of the liver, diaphragm, and lung. We performed liver, diaphragm, and lung resections. Patient had a large defect of diaphragm. Diaphragm reconstruction was performed using a pedicled reverse latissimus dorsi muscle flap. No flap necrosis was observed. Seven months after surgery, the patient did not present yellow yielding sputum and the BBF was not observed in the computed tomography. This surgical procedure was useful for treating the diaphragm defect both safely and easily. We believe that the reverse pedicled latissimus dorsi muscle flap is a reliable alternative for large diaphragm reconstruction after severe BBF.
