Evolution and expansion of Li concentration gradient during charge-discharge cycling.

ABSTRACT: To improve the performance of Li-ion batteries (LIBs), it is essential to understand the behaviour of Li ions during charge-discharge cycling. However, the analytical techniques for observing the Li ions are limited. Here, we present the complementary use of scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography at identical locations to demonstrate that the evolution of the local Li composition and the corresponding structural changes at the atomic scale cause the capacity degradation of Li(Ni_0.80Co_0.15Mn_0.05)O₂ (NCM), an LIB cathode. Using these two techniques, we show that a Li concentration gradient evolves during cycling, and the depth of the gradient expands proportionally with the number of cycles. We further suggest that the capacity to accommodate Li ions is determined by the degree of structural disordering. Our findings provide direct evidence of the behaviour of Li ions during cycling and thus the origin of the capacity decay in LIBs.

Direct Observation of Active Material Concentration Gradients and Crystallinity Breakdown in LiFePO<sub>4</sub> Electrodes During Charge/Discharge Cycling of Lithium Batteries.

Project description:The phase changes that occur during discharge of an electrode comprised of LiFePO4, carbon, and PTFE binder have been studied in lithium half cells by using X-ray diffraction measurements in reflection geometry. Differences in the state of charge between the front and the back of LiFePO4 electrodes have been visualized. By modifying the X-ray incident angle the depth of penetration of the X-ray beam into the electrode was altered, allowing for the examination of any concentration gradients that were present within the electrode. At high rates of discharge the electrode side facing the current collector underwent limited lithium insertion while the electrode as a whole underwent greater than 50% of discharge. This behavior is consistent with depletion at high rate of the lithium content of the electrolyte contained in the electrode pores. Increases in the diffraction peak widths indicated a breakdown of crystallinity within the active material during cycling even during the relatively short duration of these experiments, which can also be linked to cycling at high rate.

Direct view on the phase evolution in individual LiFePO4 nanoparticles during Li-ion battery cycling.

Project description:Phase transitions in Li-ion electrode materials during (dis)charge are decisive for battery performance, limiting high-rate capabilities and playing a crucial role in the cycle life of Li-ion batteries. However, the difficulty to probe the phase nucleation and growth in individual grains is hindering fundamental understanding and progress. Here we use synchrotron microbeam diffraction to disclose the cycling rate-dependent phase transition mechanism within individual particles of LiFePO4, a key Li-ion electrode material. At low (dis)charge rates well-defined nanometer thin plate-shaped domains co-exist and transform much slower and concurrent as compared with the commonly assumed mosaic transformation mechanism. As the (dis)charge rate increases phase boundaries become diffuse speeding up the transformation rates of individual grains. Direct observation of the transformation of individual grains reveals that local current densities significantly differ from what has previously been assumed, giving new insights in the working of Li-ion battery electrodes and their potential improvements.

In situ AFM visualization of Li-O<sub>2</sub> battery discharge products during redox cycling in an atmospherically controlled sample cell.

Project description:The in situ observation of electrochemical reactions is challenging due to a constantly changing electrode surface under highly sensitive conditions. This study reports the development of an in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique for electrochemical systems, including the design, fabrication, and successful performance of a sealed AFM cell operating in a controlled atmosphere. Documentation of reversible physical processes on the cathode surface was performed on the example of a highly reactive lithium-oxygen battery system at different water concentrations in the solvent. The AFM data collected during the discharge-recharge cycles correlated well with the simultaneously recorded electrochemical data. We were able to capture the formation of discharge products from correlated electrical and topographical channels and measure the impact of the presence of water. The cell design permitted acquisition of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, contributing information about electrical double layers under the system's controlled environment. This characterization method can be applied to a wide range of reactive surfaces undergoing transformations under carefully controlled conditions.

Non-destructive monitoring of charge-discharge cycles on lithium ion batteries using ?Li stray-field imaging.

Project description:Magnetic resonance imaging provides a noninvasive method for in situ monitoring of electrochemical processes involved in charge/discharge cycling of batteries. Determining how the electrochemical processes become irreversible, ultimately resulting in degraded battery performance, will aid in developing new battery materials and designing better batteries. Here we introduce the use of an alternative in situ diagnostic tool to monitor the electrochemical processes. Utilizing a very large field-gradient in the fringe field of a magnet, stray-field-imaging (STRAFI) technique significantly improves the image resolution. These STRAFI images enable the real time monitoring of the electrodes at a micron level. It is demonstrated by two prototype half-cells, graphite?Li and LiFePO??Li, that the high-resolution (7)Li STRAFI profiles allow one to visualize in situ Li-ions transfer between the electrodes during charge/discharge cyclings as well as the formation and changes of irreversible microstructures of the Li components, and particularly reveal a non-uniform Li-ion distribution in the graphite.

Visualizing crystal structure evolution of electrode materials upon doping and during charge/discharge cycles in lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Here we propose a systematic approach to reliably visualize the crystal structure evolution of electrode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) during cyclic charge/discharge process. Using anodic Ta5+-doped Li2ZnTi3O8 (LZTO) spheres as an example, this protocol describes the doping state modeling by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, their crystal structure parameter determination by X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinement, and formation energy by electron density calculation. This protocol also details the in-situ XRD technique and date processing to visualize the cycling reversibility of Ta5+-doped LZTO. Charge gradient microscopy.

Project description:Here we present a simple and fast method to reliably image polarization charges using charge gradient microscopy (CGM). We collected the current from the grounded CGM probe while scanning a periodically poled lithium niobate single crystal and single-crystal LiTaO3 thin film on the Cr electrode. We observed current signals at the domains and domain walls originating from the displacement current and the relocation or removal of surface charges, which enabled us to visualize the ferroelectric domains at a scan frequency above 78 Hz over 10 μm. We envision that CGM can be used in high-speed ferroelectric domain imaging and piezoelectric energy-harvesting devices.

On the rapidity of antibiotic resistance evolution facilitated by a concentration gradient.

Project description:The rapid emergence of bacterial strains resistant to multiple antibiotics is posing a growing public health risk. The mechanisms underlying the rapid evolution of drug resistance are, however, poorly understood. The heterogeneity of the environments in which bacteria encounter antibiotic drugs could play an important role. E.g., in the highly compartmentalized human body, drug levels can vary substantially between different organs and tissues. It has been proposed that this could facilitate the selection of resistant mutants, and recent experiments support this. To study the role of spatial heterogeneity in the evolution of drug resistance, we present a quantitative model describing an environment subdivided into relatively isolated compartments with various antibiotic concentrations, in which bacteria evolve under the stochastic processes of proliferation, migration, mutation and death. Analytical and numerical results demonstrate that concentration gradients can foster a mode of adaptation that is impossible in uniform environments. It allows resistant mutants to evade competition and circumvent the slow process of fixation by invading compartments with higher drug concentrations, where less resistant strains cannot subsist. The speed of this process increases sharply with the sensitivity of the growth rate to the antibiotic concentration, which we argue to be generic. Comparable adaptation rates in uniform environments would require a high selection coefficient (s > 0.1) for each forward mutation. Similar processes can occur if the heterogeneity is more complex than just a linear gradient. The model may also be applicable to other adaptive processes involving environmental heterogeneity and range expansion.

Structure Evolution from Layered to Spinel during Synthetic Control and Cycling Process of Fe-Containing Li-Rich Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:As promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), Fe-containing Li-rich compounds of Li1+x Fe0.1Ni0.15Mn0.55O y (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3 and 1.9 ≤ y ≤ 2.05) have been successfully synthesized by calcining the spherical precursors with appropriate amounts of lithium carbonate. The structures, morphologies, and chemical states of these compounds are characterized to better understand the corresponding electrochemical performances. With an increase of lithium content, Li1+x Fe0.1Ni0.15Mn0.55O y evolves from a complex layered-spinel structure to a layered structure. The lithium content also affects the average size and adhesion of the primary particles. At 0.1 C, sample x = 0.1 shows the highest first charge/discharge specific capacities (338.7 and 254.3 mA h g-1), the highest first Coulombic efficiency (75.1%), the lowest first irreversible capacity loss (84.4 mA h g-1), the highest reversible discharge specific capacity, and good rate capability. Notably, voltage fading can be alleviated through the adjustment of structural features. Such superior electrochemical performances of sample x = 0.1 are ascribed to the hierarchical micro-/nanostructure, the harmonious existence of complex layered-spinel phase, and the low charge-transfer resistance. An integral view of structure evolution from layered to spinel during synthetic control and cycling process is provided to broaden the performance scope of Li-Fe-Ni-Mn-O cathodes for LIBs.

The effect of cooling process on the structure and charge/discharge capacities of Li-rich solid-solution layered oxide cathode materials for the Li-ion battery.

Project description:The effect of cooling process after calcination at 900 °C in the preparation of cathode materials, on the crystal structure and charging/discharging capacities of Li2MnO3-LiNi1/2Mn1/2O2-LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 Li-rich solid-solution layered oxide (LLO) cathode materials for the lithium ion battery was examined in twenty-one LLO samples having different compositions. This was achieved by applying two types of cooling processes: (i) quenching the calcinated LLO samples with liquid nitrogen (quenched cooling), and (ii) slow cooling of LLO samples in the furnace at a controlled decreasing rate of the temperature (slow cooling). The results of the comparison between discharging capacities observed with LLO samples prepared with two types of cooling processes indicated that the cooling process for LLO samples to exhibit high discharge capacity was not limited to either one. The process that can be more effective for LLO samples to exhibit the high discharge capacity depended on the composition of LLO samples. LLO samples containing Li2MnO3 of over 60% exhibited higher discharge capacity when samples were quenched with liquid nitrogen than those prepared with the slow cooling process. Among LLOs examined, the effect of quenching was maximum when the Li2MnO3 content was 60%. As the LLO composition deviated from the line of 60% Li2MnO3 in the Li[Li0.20Mn0.58Ni0.18Co0.04]O2 sample compositions, the effect of quenching became smaller and the slow cooling process was superior to the quenching process. A connection was thus made between the structural difference of LLO samples prepared with the two types of cooling processes and the cathode performance was observed.

Study on failure mechanism on rechargeable alkaline zinc-Air battery during charge/discharge cycles at different depths of discharge.

Project description:Background: Zinc-air battery (ZAB) is a promising candidate for energy storage, but the short cycle life severely restricts the wider practical applications. Up to date, no consensus on the dominant factors affecting ZABs cycle life was reached to help understanding how to prolong the ZAB's cycle life. Here, a series of replacement experiments based on the ZAB were conducted to confirm the pivotal factors that influence the cycle life at different depths of discharge (DOD). Method: The morphology and composition of the components of the battery were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical titration analyses. Result: SEM images and XRD results revealed that the failure of the zinc anode gradually deepens with the increase of DOD, while the performance degradation of the tricobalt tetroxide/Carbon Black (Co3O4/CB) air cathode depends on the operating time. The concentration of CO3 2- depends on the charge/discharge cycle time. The replacement experiments results show that the dominant factors affecting the ZAB's cycle life is the reduction of active sites on the surface of Co3O4/CB air cathode at a shallow DOD, while that is the carbonation of the electrolyte at a deep DOD. The reduction of active sites on the surface of Co3O4/CB air cathode is caused by the coverage of K2CO3 precipitated by carbonation of the electrolyte, suggesting that the carbonation of the alkaline electrolyte limits ZAB's cycle life. Conclusion: Therefore, this work not only further discloses the failure mechanism of ZAB, but also provides some feasible guidance to design a ZAB with along cycle life.
