Rainbow Archimedean spiral emission from optical fibres.

ABSTRACT: We demonstrate a new practical approach for generating multicolour spiral-shaped beams. It makes use of a standard silica optical fibre, combined with a tilted input laser beam. The resulting breaking of the fibre axial symmetry leads to the propagation of a helical beam. The associated output far-field has a spiral shape, independently of the input laser power value. Whereas, with a high-power near-infrared femtosecond laser, a visible supercontinuum spiral emission is generated. With appropriate control of the input laser coupling conditions, the colours of the spiral spatially self-organize in a rainbow distribution. Our method is independent of the laser source wavelength and polarization. Therefore, standard optical fibres may be used for generating spiral beams in many applications, ranging from communications to optical tweezers and quantum optics.

Enhanced Broadband RF Differential Rectifier Integrated with Archimedean Spiral Antenna for Wireless Energy Harvesting Applications.

Project description:This work addresses the design and implementation of a broadband differential rectifier (DR) combined with an Archimedean spiral dipole antenna (ASDA) for wireless power harvesting at low incident power densities below 200 μ W/cm 2 . The proposed design exhibits an improved RF-DC conversion efficiency over a wide frequency range from 1.2 to 5 GHz. This frequency band is associated with several wireless communication services, for instance, ISM, WLAN, 5G, LTE, and GPS applications. The receiving planar ASDA exhibits circular polarization and has an average measured gain of 4.5 dBi from 1.2 to 5 GHz. To enable a wide operating bandwidth, the rectifier circuit is constituted by two architectures, designated A and B. Each scheme is designed to harvest power efficiently across a specific bandwidth. The optimal performance of both rectifiers are obtained using the nonlinear harmonic-balance simulations. The antenna⁻rectifier integration yields a compact rectenna with a high-efficiency performance over the intended bandwidth from 1.2 to 5 GHz for an input power of 9 dBm and terminal load resistance of 1 k Ω . The total measured RF-DC conversion efficiency is maintained above 30% across the entire frequency range with a peak value of 61% achieved at 1.2 GHz. In comparison with similar architectures, the proposed rectenna maintains a stable output efficiency despite the wide fluctuations in the input frequency and also has a minimum footprint size (58 × 55 mm 2 ).

Free-breathing half-radial dual-echo balanced steady-state free precession thoracic imaging with wobbling Archimedean spiral pole trajectories.

Project description:PurposeTo demonstrate free-breathing thoracic MRI with a minimal-TR balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) technique using wobbling Archimedean spiral pole (WASP) trajectories.MethodsPhantom and free-breathing in vivo chest imaging in healthy volunteers was performed at 1.5T with a half-radial, dual-echo, bSSFP sequence, termed bSTAR. For maximum sampling efficiency, a single analog-to-digital converter window along the full bipolar readout was used. To ensure a homogeneous coverage of the k-space over multiple breathing cycles, radial k-space sampling followed short-duration Archimedean spiral interleaves that were randomly titled by a small polar angle and rotated by a golden angle about the polar axis; depticting a wobbling Archimedean spiral pole (WASP) trajectory. In phantom and in vivo experiments, WASP trajectories were compared to spiral phyllotaxis sampling in terms of eddy currents and were used to generate in vivo thorax images at different respiratory phases.ResultsWASP trajectories provided artifact-free bSTAR imaging in both phantom and in vivo and respiratory self-gated reconstruction was successfully performed in all subjects. The amount of the acquired data allowed the reconstruction of 10 volumes at different respiratory levels with isotropic resolution of 1.77mm from a scan of 5.5minutes (using a TR of 1.32ms), and one high-resolution 1.16mm end-expiratory volume from a scan of 4.7minutes (using a TR of 1.42ms). The very short TR of bSTAR mitigated off-resonance artifacts despite the large field-of-view.ConclusionWe have demonstrated the feasibility of high-resolution free-breathing thoracic imaging with bSTAR using the wobbling Archimedean spiral pole in healthy subjects at 1.5T.

Memory effect assisted imaging through multimode optical fibres.

Project description:When light propagates through opaque material, the spatial information it holds becomes scrambled, but not necessarily lost. Two classes of techniques have emerged to recover this information: methods relying on optical memory effects, and transmission matrix (TM) approaches. Here we develop a general framework describing the nature of memory effects in structures of arbitrary geometry. We show how this framework, when combined with wavefront shaping driven by feedback from a guide-star, enables estimation of the TM of any such system. This highlights that guide-star assisted imaging is possible regardless of the type of memory effect a scatterer exhibits. We apply this concept to multimode fibres (MMFs) and identify a 'quasi-radial' memory effect. This allows the TM of an MMF to be approximated from only one end - an important step for micro-endoscopy. Our work broadens the applications of memory effects to a range of novel imaging and optical communication scenarios.

Hollow core optical fibres with comparable attenuation to silica fibres between 600 and 1100 nm.

Project description:For over 50 years, pure or doped silica glass optical fibres have been an unrivalled platform for the transmission of laser light and optical data at wavelengths from the visible to the near infra-red. Rayleigh scattering, arising from frozen-in density fluctuations in the glass, fundamentally limits the minimum attenuation of these fibres and hence restricts their application, especially at shorter wavelengths. Guiding light in hollow (air) core fibres offers a potential way to overcome this insurmountable attenuation limit set by the glass's scattering, but requires reduction of all the other loss-inducing mechanisms. Here we report hollow core fibres, of nested antiresonant design, with losses comparable or lower than achievable in solid glass fibres around technologically relevant wavelengths of 660, 850, and 1060 nm. Their lower than Rayleigh scattering loss in an air-guiding structure offers the potential for advances in quantum communications, data transmission, and laser power delivery.

High performance micro-flow cytometer based on optical fibres.

Project description:Flow cytometry is currently the gold standard for analysis of cells in the medical laboratory and biomedical research. Fuelled by the need of point-of-care diagnosis, a significant effort has been made to miniaturize and reduce cost of flow cytometers. However, despite recent advances, current microsystems remain less versatile and much slower than their large-scale counterparts. In this work, an all-silica fibre microflow cytometer is presented that measures fluorescence and scattering from particles and cells. It integrates cell transport in circular capillaries and light delivery by optical fibres. Single-stream cell focusing is performed by Elasto-inertial microfluidics to guarantee accurate and sensitive detection. The capability of this technique is extended to high flow rates (up to 800 µl/min), enabling a throughput of 2500 particles/s. The robust, portable and low-cost system described here could be the basis for a point-of-care flow cytometer with a performance comparable to commercial systems.

Surface-plasmon-coupled emission microscopy with a spiral phase plate.

Project description:The surface plasmon-coupled emission microscope provides high sensitivity for surface imaging. However, it suffers from a distorted donut-shape point-spread function (PSF). Here we report an effective yet simple method to correct for the distortion by introducing a spiral phase plate. This modification converts the donut PSF into one that is single lobed, which is preferable for imaging. The optical performance of the system is characterized and compared with previous publications. This technique provides more than twofold lateral resolution enhancement.

Ballistic and snake photon imaging for locating optical endomicroscopy fibres.

Project description:We demonstrate determination of the location of the distal-end of a fibre-optic device deep in tissue through the imaging of ballistic and snake photons using a time resolved single-photon detector array. The fibre was imaged with centimetre resolution, within clinically relevant settings and models. This technique can overcome the limitations imposed by tissue scattering in optically determining the in vivo location of fibre-optic medical instruments.

Amber rainbow ribbon effect in broadband optical metamaterials.

Project description:Using the trapped rainbow effect to slow down or even stop light has been widely studied. However, high loss and energy leakage severely limited the development of rainbow devices. Here, we observed the negative Goos-Hänchen effect in film samples across the entire visible spectrum. We also discovered an amber rainbow ribbon and an optical black hole due to perfect back reflection in optical waveguides, where little light leaks out. Not only does the amber rainbow ribbon effect show an automatic frequency selection response, as predicted by single frequency theoretical models and confirmed by experiments, it also shows spatial periodic regulation, resulting from broadband omnidirectional visible metamaterials prepared by disordered assembly systems. This broadband light trapping system could play a crucial role in the fields of optical storage and information processing when being used to construct ultra-compact modulators and other tunable devices.

An efficient method for measuring the internal parameters of optical cameras based on optical fibres.

Project description:In this work, we report an expedient auto-collimating method for self-measuring the internal parameters (IPs) of optical cameras. Several key optical components, including the thin optical fibre (TOF), reflecting prism, and receiver, are introduced into optical cameras. The TOF outgoing end and area-array image receiver are integrated onto the focal-plane assembly of optical cameras. Different wavelengths of light, which are emitted by external sources, are transmitted to the focal plane through optical fibres. Because one optical fibre can transmit different wavelengths of light, the same position on the focal plane can obtain point light sources (PLSs) with different wavelengths. Then, the optical system of the cameras spontaneously transforms the PLSs into auto-collimating lights. The auto-collimating lights are reflected by a two-plane prism, return to the camera optical system, reach the focal plane and are received by the area-array sensor. Finally, the IPs are calculated based on a mathematical model of the imaging relation between fibre light sources and images. The experiment confirms that this method is efficient and has a level of precision of dozens of micrometres for an optical camera with a short focal length and small field of view. Our method is suitable for on-orbit IP measurements for cameras without spatial or temporal limitations.

Optical antenna enhanced spontaneous emission.

Project description:Atoms and molecules are too small to act as efficient antennas for their own emission wavelengths. By providing an external optical antenna, the balance can be shifted; spontaneous emission could become faster than stimulated emission, which is handicapped by practically achievable pump intensities. In our experiments, InGaAsP nanorods emitting at ∼ 200 THz optical frequency show a spontaneous emission intensity enhancement of 35 × corresponding to a spontaneous emission rate speedup ∼ 115 ×, for antenna gap spacing, d = 40 nm. Classical antenna theory predicts ∼ 2,500 × spontaneous emission speedup at d ∼ 10 nm, proportional to 1/d(2). Unfortunately, at d < 10 nm, antenna efficiency drops below 50%, owing to optical spreading resistance, exacerbated by the anomalous skin effect (electron surface collisions). Quantum dipole oscillations in the emitter excited state produce an optical ac equivalent circuit current, I(o) = qω|x(o)|/d, feeding the antenna-enhanced spontaneous emission, where q|x(o)| is the dipole matrix element. Despite the quantum-mechanical origin of the drive current, antenna theory makes no reference to the Purcell effect nor to local density of states models. Moreover, plasmonic effects are minor at 200 THz, producing only a small shift of antenna resonance frequency.
