Dataset and validation of the approaches to study skills inventory for students.

ABSTRACT: There exists a vast amount of research on how students, in higher education, approach their studying and learning. Such research resulted in a multitude of questionnaires and tools to capture the way students perform in higher education institutions. One of these tools is the Approaches to Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) that was developed in the '80 s and '90 s. This inventory broadly classifies students, as approaching their study, in a deep, a strategic and/or a surface manner. Although it has gone through rigorous validation in many studies, there exist no publicly available dataset of the results of these studies and so the raw datasets cannot be re-used or integrated with other similar datasets. Here, we report and make publicly available the raw data of an 8-year longitudinal survey using this inventory in a cohort study of 1181 students from a department of a higher education institution. We validated our dataset using reliability analyses that confirmed, and compared well, with the results of previous studies.

Project description:BackgroundDiagnostic reasoning is an essential skill for optometry practice and a vital part of the curriculum for optometry trainees but there is limited understanding of how diagnostic reasoning is performed in optometry or how this skill is best developed. A validated and reliable self-reflective inventory for diagnostic reasoning in optometry, would enable trainees and registered practitioners to benchmark their diagnostic reasoning skills, identify areas of strength and areas for improvement.MethodsA 41 item self-reflective inventory, the Diagnostic Thinking Inventory, used extensively in the medical field was adapted for use in optometry and called the Diagnostic Thinking Inventory for Optometry (DTI-O). The inventory measures two subdomains of diagnostic reasoning, flexibility in thinking and structured memory. Context based changes were made to the original inventory and assessed for face and content validity by a panel of experts. The inventory was administered to two groups, experienced (qualified) optometrists and second-year optometry students to establish validity and reliability of the self-reflective tool in optometry.ResultsExploratory Factor Analysis uncovered 13 domain specific items were measuring a single construct, diagnostic reasoning. One misfitting item was removed following Rasch analysis. Two unidimensional subdomains were confirmed in the remaining 12 items: Flexibility in Thinking (χ2 = 12.98, P = 0.37) and Structured Memory (χ2 = 8.74, P = 0.72). The 'Diagnostic Thinking Inventory for Optometry Short' (DTI-OS) tool was formed from these items with the total and subdomain scores exhibiting strong internal reliability; Total score Cα = 0.92. External reliability was established by test-retest methodology (ICC 0.92, 95% CI 0.83-0.96, P < .001) and stacked Rasch analysis (one-way ANOVA, F = 0.07, P = 0.80). Qualified optometrists scored significantly higher (P < .001) than students, demonstrating construct validity.ConclusionThis study showed that the DTI-O and DTI-OS are valid and reliable self-reflective inventories to quantify diagnostic reasoning ability in optometry. With no other validated tool to measure this metacognitive skill underpinning diagnostic reasoning a self-reflective inventory could support the development of diagnostic reasoning in practitioners and guide curriculum design in optometry education.

Project description:The MUSIC® Model of Motivation is used to help instructors select strategies that can increase students' motivation and engagement in courses. The MUSIC model is comprised of five categories of strategies titled: empowerment, usefulness, success, interest, and caring. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which the MUSIC® Model of Academic Motivation Inventory (College Student version, short-form), demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties when used with students enrolled in a College of Veterinary Medicine. The inventory is comprised of five scales that correspond to the five MUSIC model components, and it measures the extent to which students perceive that: they have control in the course (empowerment); the activities in the course are useful to their future (usefulness); they can succeed in the course (success); the teaching activities and coursework are interesting (interest); and the instructor cares about students' learning and well-being (caring). The inventory has been validated for use with many different student populations, including students in different countries and of different ages (e.g., college students, middle and high school students, elementary school students). However, the inventory has not been validated for use with veterinary medicine students. We analyzed the data from 578 questionnaires that were obtained from students in six different courses at a College of Veterinary Medicine. We examined the psychometric properties of the MUSIC inventory by: (a) computing the internal consistency reliabilities for the scales; (b) calculating the fit indices and factor loadings obtained from confirmatory factor analyses; and (c) computing correlation coefficients between the inventory scales and students' self-reported effort in the course. The results provide evidence that the inventory demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties for use with veterinary medicine students. Consequently, the MUSIC Inventory can be used by researchers and instructors to assess students' motivation-related perceptions of courses.

Project description:BackgroundMedical students are faced with enormous academic demands that may influence their emotional wellbeing. The high rate of depression among medical students and its negative impact is an impetus to find explanation for the factors associated with it. Study skills that students possess might be such a factor. The current tools for the assessment of the study skills may have certain limitations, particularly for different cultural settings.ObjectivesThis study aimed to develop and validate a Study Skills Inventory (SSI), and to investigate the relationship between the students' study skills and the extent (severity) of depressive symptoms, measured using the validated tool.MethodThe first version of the SSI was developed through expert consensus. The inventory was then administered to a randomly selected group of medical students. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted for the internal validity. External validation was conducted by comparing the results of the SSI with the "Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students" (ASSIST). After validation, the correlation between the SSI total score with the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) total score was investigated using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The means of the total study skills scores for each severity category of depression were compared using ANOVA.ResultsA total of 23 items, representing five sub-scales, were included in the inventory. Based on 372 student responses (response rate of 93%), the five-factor solution explained a cumulative variance of 52% and Cronach alpha was 0.84. The SSI total score had a significant negative association with the BDI-II depression score (Pearson correlation of -.348** and P<0.0001).ConclusionThis study showed evidence for acceptable reliability and validity of the newly developed SSI. Poor study skills were found to correlate with higher depressive symptoms. This association needs confirmation in future research and could open a new door for better understanding of student depression.

Project description:This dataset contains the material volumes, masses, and intensities for a total of 45 residential building cohorts in Finland from the 1940s to the 2010s. The specific building types included are one dwelling houses and blocks of flats. The data were drawn from representative case buildings and their derivatives. The data are primarily based on construction drawings, complemented by other documents such as bills of materials. The source material was mainly obtained from the archives of the building inspection authority of the city of Vantaa, Finland. Material volumes were derived from the construction drawings either directly from annotations or, when needed, by further measurements made based on the same material. For minor lacks of information in the original documents, documents of similar buildings and literature were consulted. A total of 26 buildings were inventoried directly. For each included combination of building type, construction decade, and bearing material these were the ones with the most common façade material. In addition, 19 buildings with the second most common façade material were formed based on these to represent the 45 cohorts. Material masses, and by extension intensities, were calculated based on the recorded volumes and typical densities of construction materials used in Finland. The material volumes, masses, and intensities per material and in total are presented as three spreadsheet tables, along with a description sheet, on three corresponding hierarchical levels of aggregation: per representative building, per vertical building level (foundations, basement, first storey, etc.), and per building part (floor, exterior walls, interior walls, etc.). Furthermore, they are distinguished between the building structure and complementary building components (windows and doors). The data can be used in academic, policy related, and practical investigations of the building stock, such as in evaluating the material consumption consequences of different spatial planning strategies on various levels or estimating the materials embedded in the built environment and their potential for capitalisation in the circular economy.
