An Analysis of the Effect of ZIF-8 Addition on the Separation Properties of Polysulfone at Various Temperatures.

ABSTRACT: The transport of H2, He, CO2, O2, CH4, and N2 at three temperatures up to 65 °C was measured in dense, thick composite films formed by amorphous Polysulfone (PSf) and particles of the size-selective zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) at loadings up to 16 wt%. The morphological and structural properties of the membranes were analyzed via SEM and density measurement. The addition of ZIF-8 to PSf enhances the H2 and He permeabilities up to 480% with respect to the pure polymer, while the ideal H2/CO2 and He/CO2 selectivities of MMMs reach values up to 30-40% higher than those of pure PSf. The relative permeability and diffusivity enhancements are higher than those obtained in other polymers, such as PPO, with the same amount of filler. The Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars model is able to represent the MMM H2/CO2 separation performance for filler volume fractions below 10%.

Enhancing the Separation Performance of Glassy PPO with the Addition of a Molecular Sieve (ZIF-8): Gas Transport at Various Temperatures.

Project description:In this study, we prepared and characterized composite films formed by amorphous poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and particles of the size-selective Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework 8 (ZIF-8). The aim was to increase the permselectivity properties of pure PPO using readily available materials to enable the possibility to scale-up the technology developed in this work. The preparation protocol established allowed robust membranes with filler loadings as high as 45 wt% to be obtained. The thermal, morphological, and structural properties of the membranes were analyzed via DSC, SEM, TGA, and densitometry. The gas permeability and diffusivity of He, CO2, CH4, and N2 were measured at 35, 50, and 65 °C. The inclusion of ZIF-8 led to a remarkable increase of the gas permeability for all gases, and to a significant decrease of the activation energy of diffusion and permeation. The permeability increased up to +800% at 45 wt% of filler, reaching values of 621 Barrer for He and 449 for CO2 at 35 °C. The ideal size selectivity of the PPO membrane also increased, albeit to a lower extent, and the maximum was reached at a filler loading of 35 wt% (1.5 for He/CO2, 18 for CO2/N2, 17 for CO2/CH4, 27 for He/N2, and 24 for He/CH4). The density of the composite materials followed an additive behavior based on the pure values of PPO and ZIF-8, which indicates good adhesion between the two phases. The permeability and He/CO2 selectivity increased with temperature, which indicates that applications at higher temperatures than those inspected should be encouraged.

ZIF-95 as a filler for enhanced gas separation performance of polysulfone membrane.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are found to be promising porous crystalline materials for application in gas separation. Considering that mixed matrix membranes usually increase the gas separation performance of a polymer by increasing selectivity, permeability, or both (i.e., perm-selectivity), the zeolitic imidazole framework-95 (ZIF-95) MOF was dispersed for the first time in polysulfone (PSF) polymer to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), namely, ZIF-95/PSF. The fabricated ZIF-95/PSF membranes were examined for the separation of various gases. The characterization of solvothermally synthesized ZIF-95 was carried out using different analyses such as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), porosity measurements, etc. ZIF-95 was mixed with PSF at 8%, 16%, 24%, and 32% weight percent to form different loading MMMs. SEM analysis of membranes revealed good compatibility/adhesion between the MOF and polymer. The permeability of He, H2, O2, CO2, N2, and CH4 were measured for the pure and composite membranes. The ideal selectivity of different gas pairs were calculated and compared with reported mixed matrix membranes. The maximum increases in permeabilities were observed in 32% loaded membrane; nevertheless, these performance/permeability increases were at the expense of a slight decrease of selectivity. In the optimally loaded membrane (i.e., 24 wt% loaded membrane), the permeability of H2, O2, and CO2 increased by 80.2%, 78.0%, and 67.2%, respectively, as compared to the pure membrane. Moreover, the selectivity of H2/CH4, O2/N2, and H2/CO2 gas pairs also increased by 16%, 15%, and 8% in the 24% loaded membrane, respectively.

Zwitterionic Polysulfone Copolymer/Polysulfone Blended Ultrafiltration Membranes with Excellent Thermostability and Antifouling Properties.

Project description:Membrane fouling has been one of the most important challenges in membrane separation operations. In this study, we report a facile strategy to prepare antifouling polysulfone (PSf) UF membranes by blending amphiphilic zwitterion polysulfone-co-sulfobetaine polysulfone (PSf-co-SBPSf) copolymer. The copolymer chemical structure was characterized by 1HNMR spectroscopy. The PSf/PSf-co-SBPSf blend membranes with various zwitterionic SBPSf segment contents exhibited better surface hydrophilicity and excellent antifouling ability compared to PSf and PSf/PEG membranes. The significant increase of both porosity and water permeance indicates that the PSf-co-SBPSf has a pore-forming effect. The pure water flux and flux recovery ratio of the PSf/PSf-co-SBPSf blend membranes were both remarked to improve 286.43 L/m2h and 92.26%, while bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection remained at a high level (97.66%). More importantly, the water flux and BSA rejection see minimal variance after heat treatment, indicating excellent thermostability. Overall, the PSf/PSf-co-SBPSf blend membranes achieved a comprehensive performance of sustainable hydrophilic, high permeation flux, and remarkable antifouling ability, thus becoming a promising candidate in high-temperature separation application.

Influence of Casting Solvents on CO2/CH4 Separation Using Polysulfone Membranes.

Project description:Polysulfone membranes exhibit resistance to high temperature with low manufacturing cost and high efficiency in the separation process. The composition of gases is an important step that estimates the efficiency of separation in membranes. As membrane types are currently becoming in demand for CO2/CH4 segregation, polysulfone will be an advantageous alternative to have in further studies. Therefore, research is undertaken in this study to evaluate two solvents: chloroform (CF) and tetrahydrofuran (THF). These solvents are tested for casting polymeric membranes from polysulfone (PSF) to separate every single component from a binary gas mixture of CO2/CH4. In addition, the effect of gas pressure was conducted from 1 to 10 bar on the behavior of the permeability and selectivity. The results refer to the fact that the maximum permeability of CO2 and CH4 for THF is 62.32 and 2.06 barrer at 1 and 2 bars, respectively. Further, the maximum permeability of CF is 57.59 and 2.12 barrer at 1 and 2 bars, respectively. The outcome selectivity values are 48 and 36 for THF and CF at 1 bar, accordingly. Furthermore, the study declares that with the increase in pressure, the permeability and selectivity values drop for CF and THF. The performance for polysulfone (PSF) membrane that is manufactured with THF is superior to that of CF relative to the Robeson upper bound. Therefore, through the results, it can be deduced that the solvent during in-situ synthesis has a significant influence on the gas separation of a binary mixture of CO2/CH4.

Cross-Linked Polyimide/ZIF-8 Mixed-Matrix Membranes by In Situ Formation of ZIF-8: Effect of Cross-Linking on Their Propylene/Propane Separation.

Project description:Despite their potential for the scalable production of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), the MMMs prepared by the polymer-modification-enabled in situ metal-organic framework formation (PMMOF) process showed a considerable reduction in gas permeability as the filler loading increased. It was hypothesized that a correlation existed between the decrease in permeability and the change in the properties of the polymer, such as free volume and chain flexibility, upon in situ MOF formation. Herein, we aim to address the permeability reduction by using a cross-linked polyimide (6FDA-DAM:DABA (3:2)). It was found the degree of cross-linking affected not only the properties of the polymer, but also the in situ formation of the ZIF-8 filler particles in the cross-linked polymer. The proper degree of cross-linking resulted in suppressing C3H6 permeability reduction, suggesting a possible strategy to overcome the issue of PMMOF. The swelling of the polymer followed by chain rearrangement during the PMMOF, as well as the structural rigidity of the polymer, were found to be critical in mitigating permeability reduction.

Modified microbiology through enhanced denitrification by addition of various organic substances-temperature effect.

Project description:Worldwide, the environmental nitrate (NO3-) problem is increasingly coming into focus. These increases in NO3- concentration result mainly from agricultural inputs and are further exacerbated by decreasing and finite geogenic NO3- degradation capacity in aquifers. Thus, treatment methods are becoming more and more important. In this study, the effects of enhanced denitrification with addition of organic carbon (C) on thereby autochthonous occurring microbiology and compared at room temperature as well as 10 °C were investigated. Incubation of bacteria and fungi was carried out using natural sediments without degradation capacity and groundwater with high NO3- concentrations. Addition of the four applied substrates (acetate, glucose, ascorbic acid, and ethanol) results in major differences in microbial community. Cooling to 10 °C changes the microbiology again. Relative abundances of bacteria are strongly influenced by temperature, which is probably the explanation for different denitrification rates. Fungi are much more sensitive to the milieu change with organic C. Different fungi taxa preferentially occur at one of the two temperature approaches. Major modifications of the microbial community are mainly observed whose denitrification rates strongly depend on the temperature effect. Therefore, we assume a temperature optimum of enhanced denitrification specific to each substrate, which is influenced by the microbiology.

Effect of Graphene Oxide Synthesis Method on Properties and Performance of Polysulfone-Graphene Oxide Mixed Matrix Membranes.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) has shown great promise as a nanofiller to enhance the performance of mixed matrix composite membranes (MMMs) for water treatment applications. However, GO can be prepared by various synthesis routes, leading to different concentrations of the attached oxygen functional groups. In this research, GO produced by the Hummers', Tour, and Staudenmaier methods were characterized and embedded at various fractions into the matrix of polysulfone (PSf) and used to prepare microfiltration membranes via the phase inversion process. The effects of the GO preparation method and loading on the membrane characteristics, as well as performance for oil removal from an oil-water emulsion, are analyzed. Our results reveal that GO prepared by the Staudenmaier method has a higher concentration of the more polar carbonyl group, increasing the membrane hydrophilicity and porosity compared to GO prepared by the Hummers' and Tour methods. On the other hand, the Hummers' and Tour methods produce GO with larger sheet size, and are more effective in enhancing the mechanical properties of the PSf membrane. Finally, all MMMs exhibited improved water flux (up to 2.7 times) and oil rejection, than those for the control PSf sample, with the optimum GO loading ranged between 0.1-0.2 wt%.

Efficient Separation of Acetylene-Containing Mixtures Using ZIF-8 Membranes.

Project description:Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes show great potential in the separation of acetylene mixtures. In this work, we have prepared ZIF-8 membranes on polyamide (PA) substrates for the highly selective separation of acetylene/methane and acetylene/carbon dioxide mixtures. The C2H2/CH4 and C2H2/CO2 mixtures can be successfully separated using the ZIF-8 membranes, with separation factors of 12.1 and 1.8, respectively. Based on the results of the cross-permeation tests of C2H2/CH4, CO2/CH4, and C2H2/CO2, the separation mechanism of C2H2/CH4 in our ZIF-8 membrane can be attributed to a higher affinity for acetylene and molecular sieving effect, while C2H2/CO2 separation is related to thermodynamic factors. It is worth noting that this is the first example of MOF membranes to successfully separate C2H2 from CH4 and CO2.

Interfacial nanoarchitectonics for ZIF-8 membranes with enhanced gas separation.

Project description:Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are potentially useful in gas separation applications. Conventional methods of MOF membrane preparation require multiple steps and high-pressure conditions. In this study, a reliable one-step interfacial synthesis method under atmospheric pressure has been developed to prepare zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) membranes supported on porous α-Al2O3 disks. To obtain optimal ZIF-8 membranes, three reaction parameters were investigated, namely, reaction temperature, reaction time, and concentration of the organic linker (i.e., 2-methylimidazole). The growth of ZIF-8 membranes under various parameters was evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and the optimal synthesis conditions were determined (i.e., 80 °C for 12 h in 50 mM of 2-methylimidazole). The as-synthesized ZIF-8 membranes were then applied to CO2/N2 gas separation, which exhibited a maximum separation factor of 5.49 and CO2 gas permeance of 0.47 × 10-7 mol·m-2·s-1·Pa-1.

Physicochemical Properties of Pork Neck and Chicken Leg Meat under Various Freezing Temperatures in a Deep Freezer.

Project description:This study was conducted to investigate the effects of freezing and storage temperature (-18°C, -50°C, and -60°C) on the physicochemical properties of pork neck and chicken leg meat in home-scale deep freezers. Pork neck was cut into a thickness of 3 cm (9×9×3 cm, 150 g), individually packed in air-containing packages, and stored at different temperature (-18°C, -50°C, and -60°C) for 6 months. Chicken leg meats were prepared (10 cm long, weighing 70 g) and packed in the same manner. Frozen samples were thawed at 2°C. Physicochemical properties such as thawing loss, cooking loss, water-holding capacity, color, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were evaluated. The samples frozen by deep freezing (-60°C) was favorable with respect to thawing loss, color, and VBN. Samples frozen at -60°C had lower values of thawing loss and VBN than those frozen at -18°C for all storage periods (p<0.05). Color parameters were more similar to those of fresh meat than to those of samples frozen at -18°C for 6 months. The TBARS of all samples were below 0.3 mg malondialdehyde/kg, thereby indicating oxidative stability of lipids. Consequently, deep freezing at -60°C may be acceptable for maintaining the quality of fresh pork neck and chicken leg meat for 6 months without deterioration.
