Preparation of High Molecular Weight Poly(urethane-urea)s Bearing Deactivated Diamines.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of poly(urethane-urea) (PUUs) bearing deactivated diamines within the backbone polymer chain is presented. Several deactivated diamines present interesting properties for several applications in the biomaterial field due to their attractive biocompatibility. Through an activation with Chloro-(trimethyl)silane (Cl-TMS) during the polymerization reaction, the reactivity of these diamines against diisocyanates was triggered, leading to PUUs with high performance. Indeed, through this activation protocol, the obtained molecular weights and mechanical features increased considerably respect to PUUs prepared following the standard conditions. In addition, to demonstrate the feasibility and versatility of this synthetic approach, diisocyanate with different reactivity were also addressed. The experimental work is supported by calculations of the electronic parameters of diisocyanate and diamines, using quantum mechanical methods.

End-Terminated Poly(urethane-urea) Hybrid Approach toward Nanoporous/Microfilament Morphology.

Project description:In the present work, the effect of heteroatomic hydrogen bonding on the properties of -OH/-NH-terminated soft-segment-free polymers, viz, polyurethane (P-UT), polyurea (P-UR), and their hybrid (P-UT-UR), is explored. P-UT was synthesized from phloroglucinol and P-UR was synthesized from 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine by employing hexamethylene diisocyanate as a counterpart. P-UT exhibited a spherulitic structure with varying sizes, whereas P-UR displayed a fibrillar structure characteristic as that of crystalline hard segments. The P-UT-UR hybrid exhibited a fine nanospherulitic structure with a high order of interconnectivity. Negative surface skewness values of -0.47 and -0.18 were measured (by AFM) for P-UT and P-UT-UR, respectively, which revealed that the surface is not smooth and is covered with features. Due to the increased H-bonding (-N-H···O-H) in P-UT-UR, its transparency decreased. A block copolymer hybrid of urethane-urea was synthesized, which preferred homoatomic H-bonding, whereas random urethane/urea bridges favored hetreoheteroatom H-bonding. A pentafluorophenyl end-functional hybrid (PFI-P-UT-UR) was synthesized, which displayed filaments of ∼2-3 μm length in contrast to the interconnected nanospherulitic structure observed for P-UT-UR. The self-aggregation and end folding led to the formation of a filament structure. By altering the chemical structure slightly, nano-ordered polyurethanes or their hybrids can be achieved.

Morphology, Micromechanical, and Macromechanical Properties of Novel Waterborne Poly(urethane-urea)/Silica Nanocomposites

Project description:Morphology, macro-, and micromechanical properties of novel poly(urethane-urea)/silica nanocomposites were analyzed by electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and microindentation. The studied nanocomposites were based on a poly(urethane-urea) (PUU) matrix filled by nanosilica, and were prepared from waterborne dispersions of PUU (latex) and SiO2. The loading of nano-SiO2 was varied between 0 (neat matrix) and 40 wt% in the dry nanocomposite. The prepared materials were all formally in the rubbery state at room temperature, but they displayed complex elastoviscoplastic behavior, spanning from stiffer elastomeric type to semi-glassy. Because of the employed rigid and highly uniform spherical nanofiller, the materials are of great interest for model microindentation studies. Additionally, because of the polycarbonate-type elastic chains of the PUU matrix, hydrogen bonding in the studied nanocomposites was expected to be rich and diverse, ranging from very strong to weak. In micro- and macromechanical tests, all the elasticity-related properties correlated very strongly. The relations among the properties that related to energy dissipation were complex, and were highly affected by the existence of hydrogen bonding of broadly varied strength, by the distribution patterns of the fine nanofiller, as well as by the eventual locally endured larger deformations during the tests, and the tendency of the materials to cold flow.

XPS and ToF-SIMS Characterization of New Biodegradable Poly(Peptide-Urethane-Urea) Block Copolymers.

Project description:New, linear, segmented poly(peptide-urethane-urea) (PPUU) block copolymers are synthesized and their surface compositions are characterized with angle dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ADXPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). These new PPUU block copolymers contain three types of segments. The soft segment (SS) is poly(caprolactone diol) (PCL). The hard segment is lysine diisocyanate with a hydrazine chain extender. The oligopeptide segment (OPS) contains three types of amino acids (proline, hydroxyproline, and glycine). Incorporation of the OPS into the polyurethane backbone is done to provide a synthetic polymer material with controllable biodegradation properties. As biodegradation processes normally are initiated at the interface between the biomaterial and the living tissue, it is important to characterize the surface composition of biomaterials. ADXPS and ToF-SIMS results show that the surfaces of all four polymers are enriched with the PCL SS, the most hydrophobic component of the three polymer segments.

Convenient preparation of high molecular weight poly(dimethylsiloxane) using thermally latent NHC-catalysis: a structure-activity correlation.

Project description:The polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) is investigated using several five-, six- and seven-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). The catalysts are delivered in situ from thermally susceptible CO2 adducts. It is demonstrated that the polymerization can be triggered from a latent state by mild heating, using the highly nucleophilic 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene as organocatalyst. This way, high molecular weight PDMS is prepared (up to >400 000 g/mol, 1.6 < Ð M < 2.5) in yields >95%, using low catalyst loadings (0.2-0.1 mol %). Furthermore, the results suggest that a nucleophilic, zwitterionic mechanism is in operation, in preference to purely anionic polymerization.

Preparation and Stabilization of High Molecular Weight Poly (acrylonitrile-co-2-methylenesuccinamic acid) for Carbon Fiber Precursor.

Project description:Bifunctional comonomer 2-methylenesuccinamic acid (MLA) was designed and synthesized to prepare acrylonitrile copolymer P (AN-co-MLA) using mixed solvent polymerization as a carbon fiber precursor. The effect of monomer feed ratios on the structure and stabilization were characterized by elemental analysis (EA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), proton nuclear magnetic (1H NMR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for the P (AN-co-MLA) copolymers. The results indicated that both the conversion and molecular weight of polymerization reduce gradually when the MLA content is increased in the feed and that bifunctional comonomer MLA possesses a larger reactivity ratio than acrylonitrile (AN). P (AN-co-MLA) shows improved stabilization compared to the PAN homopolymer and poly (acrylonitrile-acrylic acid-methacrylic acid) [P (AN-AA-MA)], showing features such as lower initiation temperature, smaller cyclic activation energy, wider exothermic peak, and a larger stabilization degree, which are due to the ionic cyclization reaction initiated by MLA, confirming that the as-prepared P (AN-co-MLA) is the potential precursor for high-performance carbon fiber.

Biodegradable poly(ester urethane)urea elastomers with variable amino content for subsequent functionalization with phosphorylcholine.

Project description:While surface modification is well suited for imparting biomaterials with specific functionality for favorable cell interactions, the modification of degradable polymers would be expected to provide only temporary benefit. Bulk modification by incorporating pendant reactive groups for subsequent functionalization of biodegradable polymers would provide a more enduring approach. Towards this end, a series of biodegradable poly(ester urethane)urea elastomers with variable amino content (PEUU-NH2 polymers) were developed. Carboxylated phosphorycholine was synthesized and conjugated to the PEUU-NH2 polymers for subsequent bulk functionalization to generate PEUU-PC polymers. Synthesis was verified by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The impact of amine incorporation and phosphorylcholine conjugation was shown on mechanical, thermal and degradation properties. Water absorption increased with increasing amine content, and further with PC conjugation. In wet conditions, tensile strength and initial modulus generally decreased with increasing hydrophilicity, but remained in the range of 5-30 MPa and 10-20 MPa, respectively. PC conjugation was associated with significantly reduced platelet adhesion in blood contact testing and the inhibition of rat vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation. These biodegradable PEUU-PC elastomers offer attractive properties for applications as non-thrombogenic, biodegradable coatings and for blood-contacting scaffold applications. Further, the PEUU-NH2 base polymers offer the potential to have multiple types of biofunctional groups conjugated onto the backbone to address a variety of design objectives.

Electrospun Poly(carbonate-urea-urethane)s Nonwovens with Shape-Memory Properties as a Potential Biomaterial.

Project description:Poly(carbonate-urea-urethane) (PCUU)-based scaffolds exhibit various desirable properties for tissue engineering applications. This study thus aimed to investigate the suitability of PCUU as polymers for the manufacturing of nonwoven mats by electrospinning, able to closely mimic the fibrous structure of the extracellular matrix. PCUU nonwovens of fiber diameters ranging from 0.28 ± 0.07 to 0.82 ± 0.12 μm were obtained with an average surface porosity of around 50-60%. Depending on the collector type and solution concentration, a broad range of tensile strengths (in the range of 0.3-9.6 MPa), elongation at break (90-290%), and Young's modulus (5.7-26.7 MPa) at room temperature of the nonwovens could be obtained. Furthermore, samples collected on the plate collector showed a shape-memory effect with a shape-recovery ratio (Rr) of around 99% and a shape-fixity ratio (Rf) of around 96%. Biological evaluation validated the inertness, stability, and lack of cytotoxicity of PCUU nonwovens obtained on the plate collector. The ability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and endothelial cells (HUVECs) to attach, elongate, and grow on the surface of the nonwovens suggests that the manufactured nonwovens are suitable scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.

Controllable degradation kinetics of POSS nanoparticle-integrated poly(ε-caprolactone urea)urethane elastomers for tissue engineering applications.

Project description:Biodegradable elastomers are a popular choice for tissue engineering scaffolds, particularly in mechanically challenging settings (e.g. the skin). As the optimal rate of scaffold degradation depends on the tissue type to be regenerated, next-generation scaffolds must demonstrate tuneable degradation patterns. Previous investigations mainly focussed on the integration of more or less hydrolysable components to modulate degradation rates. In this study, however, the objective was to develop and synthesize a family of novel biodegradable polyurethanes (PUs) based on a poly(ε-caprolactone urea)urethane backbone integrating polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-PCLU) with varying amounts of hard segments (24%, 28% and 33% (w/v)) in order to investigate the influence of hard segment chemistry on the degradation rate and profile. PUs lacking POSS nanoparticles served to prove the important function of POSS in maintaining the mechanical structures of the PU scaffolds before, during and after degradation. Mechanical testing of degraded samples revealed hard segment-dependent modulation of the materials' viscoelastic properties, which was attributable to (i) degradation-induced changes in the PU crystallinity and (ii) either the presence or absence of POSS. In conclusion, this study presents a facile method of controlling degradation profiles of PU scaffolds used in tissue engineering applications.

The Influence of Nanofiller Shape and Nature on the Functional Properties of Waterborne Poly(urethane-urea) Nanocomposite Films.

Project description:A series of waterborne polycarbonate-based poly(urethane-urea) nanocomposite films were prepared and characterized. An isocyanate excess of 30 mol% with respect to the hydroxyl groups was used in the procedure, omitting the chain-extension step of the acetone process in the dispersion preparation. The individual steps of the synthesis of the poly(urethane-urea) matrix were followed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The nanofillers (1 wt% in the final nanocomposite) differed in nature and shape. Starch, graphene oxide and nanocellulose were used as representatives of organic nanofillers, while halloysite, montmorillonite, nanosilica and hydroxyapatite were used as representatives of inorganic nanofillers. Moreover, the fillers differed in their shape and average particle size. The films were characterized by a set of methods to obtain the tensile, thermal and surface properties of the nanocomposites as well as the internal arrangement of the nanoparticles in the nanocomposite film. The degradation process was evaluated at 37 °C in a H2O2 + CoCl2 solution.

Spout Fluidized Bed Assisted Preparation of Poly(tannic acid)-Coated Urea Fertilizer.

Project description:Slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) have been widely used to reduce environment pollution derived from excessive nutrients. Coated fertilizers have been designed and prepared using various materials. However, development of new green coating materials and simple process is still a huge challenge. In this study, tannic acid (TA), a natural polyphenol, was used to prepare poly(tannic acid) (PTA)-coated fertilizers with urea prills as the core, and the technology of the coating process in a spout fluidized bed was developed. PTA coating could be formed rapidly by the fast oxidation of TA by an oxidation solution containing CuSO4 and H2O2. The coated urea release behavior was systematically studied in water and soil. In both water and soil, the release rate of nitrogen from coated urea is much slower than that from raw urea. Raw urea was completely dissolved within 30 min, while 27% of urea was released from coated urea. The pot experiments indicated that coated urea has a positive effect on the plant growth as well. Our results provide an effective method to prepare environment-friendly SRFs, indicating a promising application in sustainable agriculture.
