Synthesis and Characterization of 1,10-Phenanthroline-mono-N-oxides.

ABSTRACT: N-oxides of N-heteroaromatic compounds find widespread applications in various fields of chemistry. Although the strictly planar aromatic structure of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) is expected to induce unique features of the corresponding N-oxides, so far the potential of these compounds has not been explored. In fact, appropriate procedure has not been reported for synthesizing these derivatives of phen. Now, we provide a straightforward method for the synthesis of a series of mono-N-oxides of 1,10-phenanthrolines. The parent compounds were oxidized by a green oxidant, peroxomonosulfate ion in acidic aqueous solution. The products were obtained in high quality and at good to excellent yields. A systematic study reveals a clear-cut correlation between the basicity of the compounds and the electronic effects of the substituents on the aromatic ring. The UV spectra of these compounds were predicted by DFT calculations at the TD-DFT/TPSSh/def2-TZVP level of theory.

Project description:In the mononuclear title compound, [Ni(C(2)H(6)O(7)P(2))(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))]·H(2)O, the Ni(II) atom (site symmetry 2) is bonded to two phosphate-based O,O'-bidentate chelate ligands and one N,N'-bidentate 1,10-phenanthroline ligand, resulting in a slightly distorted cis-NiN(2)O(4) octa-hedral geometry. In the crystal structure, pairs of complexes are linked by double hydrogen bonds, forming a one-dimensional chain-like structure. Aromatic π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid separation = 3.768 (2) Å] and further hydrogen bonds generate a two-dimensional structure. The water O atom also lies on a crystallographic twofold axis.

Synthesis and Spectroscopic Characterization of Selected Water-Soluble Ligands Based on 1,10-Phenanthroline Core.

Project description:Water-soluble ligands based on a 1,10-phenanthroline core are relatively poorly studied compounds. Developing efficient and convenient syntheses of them would result in new interesting applications because of the importance of 1,10-phenanthrolines. In this manuscript, we describe novel and practical ways to introduce a carboxyl and, for the first time, a phenol and dithiocarboxyl group under mild reaction conditions. This strategy enables highly efficient and practical synthesis of suitable organosulfur compounds with high added value, high chemoselectivity, and a broad substrate range. We present the selective conversion of a hydroxydialdehyde in the form of 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline-7,9-dicarbaldehyde into its derivative, unique hydroxydicarboxylic acid, by an oxidation procedure, giving 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline-7,9-dicarboxylic acid. A similar procedure resulted in the formation of 9-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2-carboxylic acid by oxidation of commercially available neocuproine. An alternative method of obtaining 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives possessing carboxylic acid group can be based on the hydrolysis of ester or nitrile groups; however, this synthesis leads to unexpected products. Moreover, we apply Perkin condensation to synthesize a vinyl (or styryl) analog of 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives with phenol function. This reaction also demonstrates a new, simple, and efficient strategy for converting methyl derivatives of 1,10-phenanthroline. We anticipate that the new way of converting methyl will find wide application in chemical synthesis.

Project description:The reaction of lead acetate, benzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in aqueous solution yielded the title complex, [Pb(C(7)H(5)O(2))(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))]·C(7)H(6)O(2). In the crystal, the Pb(II) ion is hexa-coordinated by two N atoms from one 1,10-phenanthroline ligand and four O atoms from two chelate benzoate anions. If the second benzoate ligand is treated as one coordination site, the overall coordination may be represented as a distorted pseudo-square pyramid. An inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond links the solvent benzoic acid mol-ecule with a metal-coordinated benzoate ligand. The shortest Pb⋯Pb distance is 3.864 (4) Å, indicating a weak metal-metal inter-action. Two complex mol-ecules related by an inversion centre form dimeric units via Pb⋯O inter-actions of 3.206 (4) Å.

Project description:In the title compound, [Mg(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)][Cr(2)O(7)]·2C(12)H(8)N(2), the cation and anion are situated on a twofold rotation axis. The Mg(II) ion is coordinated by four N atoms from two 1,10-phenanthroline ligands and two O atoms from coordinated water mol-ecules in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Inter-molecular O-H⋯N and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π-π inter-actions between the aromatic rings [shortest centroid-centroid separation = 3.527 (2) Å] link the cations, anions and 1,10-phenanthroline solvent mol-ecules into a hydrogen-bonded cluster.

Synthesis, Characterization and Photobiological Studies of Ru(II) Dyads Derived from α-Oligothiophene Derivatives of 1,10-Phenanthroline.

Project description:Three new bis(2,2'-bipyridine)-heteroleptic Ru(II) dyads incorporating thienyl groups (n = 1-3, compounds 1, 2 and 3, respectively) appended to 1,10-phenanthroline were synthesized and characterized to investigate the impact of n on the photophysical and photobiological properties within the series. All three complexes showed unstructured emission near 618 nm from a triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3 MLCT) state with a lifetime (τem ) of approximately 1 μs. Transient absorption measurements revealed an additional excited state that was nonemissive and long-lived (τTA = 43 μs for 2 and 27 μs for 3), assigned as a triplet intraligand (3 IL) state that was accessible only in 2 and 3. All three complexes were strong singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) sensitizers, with quantum yields (Φ∆ ) for 2 and 3 being the largest (74-78%), and all three were photocytotoxic to cancer cells with visible light activation in the order: 3 > 2 > 1. Cell-free DNA photodamage followed the same trend, where potency increased with decreasing 3 IL energy. Compounds 2 and 3 also showed in vitro photobiological effects with red light (625 nm), where their molar absorptivities were <100 m-1 cm-1 . These findings highlight that Ru(II) dyads derived from α-oligothiophenes directly appended to 1,10-phenanthroline-namely 2 and 3-possess low-lying 3 IL states that are highly photosensitizing, and they may therefore be of interest for photobiological applications such as photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Project description:In the title compound, C14H12N2, the N⋯N distance is 2.719 (1) Å. The N-C-C-N torsion angle [0.9 (1)°] is close to the ideal value of 0° as expected. Bond lengths and angles are consistent with those observed for [1,10]phenanthroline and coordinated 5,6 dimeth-yl[1,10]phenanthroline. In the crystal, C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into C(4) chains running parallel to the b axis. Weak π-π inter-actions between benzene and pyridine rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.5337 (7) Å] and between benzene rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.6627 (7) and 3.8391 (7)Å] also occur.

Difluoridodioxido(1,10-phenanthroline)molybdenum(VI).

Project description:The title compound, [MoF(2)O(2)(C(12)H(8)N(2))], has non-crystallographic mirror symmetry. The Mo(VI) atom shows a distorted octa-hedral environment, with the phenanthroline N atoms and the two oxide groups forming the equatorial plane and the F atoms occupying the apical positions. Weak C-H⋯O and C-H⋯F hydrogen-bonding contacts and π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.662 (1) Å] connect the complex mol-ecules into a three-dimensional supra-molecular framework.

Synthesis, Characterization and Copper Chemistry of a Non-symmetric Ligand: 2-Methyl-9-(3,5-dimethyl-N-pyrazolylmethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline.

Project description:The synthesis of an unsymmetrical phenanthroline based ligand, 2-methyl-9-(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L), and its cupric [Cu(II)] (1) and cuprous [Cu(I)] (2) complexes, are reported. The X-ray structures of each of these Cu complexes show distinct changes in coordination environments consistent with the geometrical preferences of the two oxidation states. In the solid state the Cu(II) complex (1) adopts a geometry best described as trigonal bipyramidal, while the Cu(I) complex (2) consists of a single dicationic dimer in which the ligand bridges between two copper ions, separated by 4.26 Å. The two Cu(I) coordination sites differ in 2 with one copper center complexed in a trigonal planar geometry and the other copper in a distorted tetrahedral environment; the latter coordination results from an additional CH(3)CN ligand. Complex 1 exhibits a reversible redox process at -0.34 V vs. Fc/Fc(+) in CH(3)CN, attributable to the Cu(2+)/Cu(+) couple, while the dimeric Cu(I) complex (2) is resistant to oxidation on the CV timescale. Over minutes however, complex 1 does oxidize in the presence of dioxygen to 2 in CH(3)CN.

Palladium(II) complexes of 1,10-phenanthroline: Synthesis and X-ray crystal structure determination.

Project description:Two palladium(II) complexes, [Pd(phen)(N identical withCCH(3))(2)][O(3)SCF(3)](2) (1) and [Pd(phen)(mu-OH)](2)[O(3)SCF(3)](2).2H(2)O (2) (where phen= 1,10-phenanthroline), have been crystallized following the reaction of Pd(phen)Cl(2) with silver triflate, Ag(O(3)SCF(3)), in acetonitrile and water, respectively. The structures of both complexes are based on a Pd(phen)(2+) metal core, with two acetonitrile molecules binding in a monodentate fashion in complex 1 and two hydroxo bridges holding together two cores to form a dimer in complex 2. Additionally, both complexes present a hydrogen bonded 3-D network involving the triflate anions in 1, and water and triflate anions in 2. Both complexes have been characterized by infrared and (1)H NMR spectroscopy and their crystal structures determined by X-ray crystallography.
