Continuous-capture microwave imaging.

ABSTRACT: Light-in-flight sensing has emerged as a promising technique in image reconstruction applications at various wavelengths. We report a microwave imaging system that uses an array of transmitters and a single receiver operating in continuous transmit-receive mode. Captures take a few microseconds and the corresponding images cover a spatial range of tens of square meters with spatial resolution of 0.1 meter. The images are the result of a dot product between a reconstruction matrix and the captured signal with no prior knowledge of the scene. The reconstruction matrix uses an engineered electromagnetic field mask to create unique random time patterns at every point in the scene and correlates it with the captured signal to determine the corresponding voxel value. We report the operation of the system through simulations and experiment in a laboratory scene. We demonstrate through-wall real-time imaging, tracking, and observe second-order images from specular reflections.

Continuous batch synthesis with atmospheric-pressure microwave plasmas.

Project description:Plasmas under atmospheric pressure offer a high-temperature environment for material synthesis, but electrode ablation compromises purity. Here, we introduce an atmospheric-pressure microwave plasma (AMP) operated without electrodes to overcome the existing limitations in pure material synthesis. The distribution of the electrostatic field intensity inside a waveguide during AMP excitation was examined via electrostatic field simulations. The lateral and radial gas temperature distributions were also studied using optical emission spectroscopy. The AMP exhibited a uniform ultrahigh temperature (9,000 K), a large volume (102-104 cm3), and a response time on the millisecond level. AMP efficiently synthesized silicon nanoparticles, graphene, and graphene@Si-Fe core-shell nanoparticles within tens of milliseconds, ensuring purity and size control. We propose the "heat impulse" metric for evaluating the plasma characteristics (n a, T g, and t) in material synthesis, extended to other high-temperature plasmas. AMP is compact, cost-effective, and easy to assemble, promising for eco-friendly mass production of pure materials.

Continuous process design of the microwave chemical recycling of waste plastics using microwave-absorbing heating elements.

Project description:Conventional pyrolysis methods to chemically recycle plastic waste require significant energy input owing to inefficient energy transfer from the heat sources to plastics and the generation of excess CO2. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to develop alternative methods for the chemical recycling of waste plastics to limit global warming. In this study, the use of microwaves (MWs) as an efficient energy source for pyrolysis and chemical recycling. However, because plastic is transparent to MW energy, a method that utilizes carbon materials as MW-absorbing heating elements (MWAHEs) was developed. This method directly converted high-density polyethylene (HDPE) into light chemicals in up to 94% yield with 45% ethylene selectivity. A two-stage pyrolysis system incorporating MWAHE-assisted MW pyrolysis was also developed to produce light chemicals in 95% yield with 49% ethylene selectivity. From a chemical engineering perspective, this two-step pyrolysis system is an efficient and feasible method for producing valuable light olefins. This study also demonstrates that MWAHE assisted MW pyrolysis is effective for the chemical recycling of plastic waste. This study offers potential solutions for the environmental problems posed by plastic waste by developing efficient and scalable methods for its chemical recycling.

Electrically controlling single-spin qubits in a continuous microwave field.

Project description:Large-scale quantum computers must be built upon quantum bits that are both highly coherent and locally controllable. We demonstrate the quantum control of the electron and the nuclear spin of a single (31)P atom in silicon, using a continuous microwave magnetic field together with nanoscale electrostatic gates. The qubits are tuned into resonance with the microwave field by a local change in electric field, which induces a Stark shift of the qubit energies. This method, known as A-gate control, preserves the excellent coherence times and gate fidelities of isolated spins, and can be extended to arbitrarily many qubits without requiring multiple microwave sources.

Surface Estimation for Microwave Imaging.

Project description:Biomedical imaging and sensing applications in many scenarios demand accurate surface estimation from a sparse set of noisy measurements. These measurements may arise from a variety of sensing modalities, including laser or electromagnetic samples of an object's surface. We describe a state-of-the-art microwave imaging prototype that has sensors to acquire both microwave and laser measurements. The approach developed to translate sparse samples of the breast surface into an accurate estimate of the region of interest is detailed. To evaluate the efficacy of the method, laser and electromagnetic samples are acquired by sensors from three realistic breast models with varying sizes and shapes. A set of metrics is developed to assist with the investigation and demonstrate that the algorithm is able to accurately estimate the shape of a realistic breast phantom when only a sparse set of data are available. Moreover, the algorithm is robust to the presence of measurement noise, and is effective when applied to measurement scans of patients acquired with the prototype.

Gold film-catalysed benzannulation by microwave-assisted, continuous flow organic synthesis (MACOS).

Project description:Methodology has been developed for laying down a thin gold-on-silver film on the inner surface of glass capillaries for the purpose of catalysing benzannulation reactions. The cycloaddition precursors are flowed through these capillaries while the metal film is being heated to high temperatures using microwave irradiation. The transformation can be optimized rapidly, tolerates a wide number of functional groups, is highly regioselective, and proceeds in good to excellent conversion.

RPCA-based thermoacoustic imaging for microwave ablation monitoring.

Project description:Microwave ablation (MWA) is a potent cancer treatment tool, but its effectiveness can be hindered by the lack of visual feedback. This paper validates the feasibility of using microwave-induced thermoacoustic imaging (TAI) technique to monitor the MWA process. A feasibility analysis was conducted at the principle level and a high-performance real-time TAI system was introduced. To address the interference caused by MWA, a robust principal component analysis (RPCA)-based method for TAI was proposed. This method leverages the correlation between multiple signal frames to eliminate interference. RPCA's effectiveness in TAI was demonstrated through three sets of different experiments. Experiments demonstrated that TAI can effectively monitors the MWA process. This work represents the first application of RPCA-related matrix decomposition methods in TAI, paving the way for the application of TAI in more complex clinical scenarios. By providing rapid and accurate visual feedback, this research advances MWA technology.

Methyl glycosides via Fischer glycosylation: translation from batch microwave to continuous flow processing.

Project description:AbstractA continuous flow procedure for the synthesis of methyl glycosides (Fischer glycosylation) of various monosaccharides using a heterogenous catalyst has been developed. In-depth analysis of the isomeric composition was undertaken and high consistency with corresponding results observed under microwave heating was obtained. Even in cases where addition of water was needed to achieve homogeneity-a prerequisite for the flow experiments-no detrimental effect on the conversion was found. The scalability was demonstrated on a model case (mannose) and as part of the target-oriented synthesis of d-glycero-d-manno heptose, both performed on multigram scale.Graphical abstract

One-step synthesis of pyridines and dihydropyridines in a continuous flow microwave reactor.

Project description:The Bohlmann-Rahtz pyridine synthesis and the Hantzsch dihydropyridine synthesis can be carried out in a microwave flow reactor or using a conductive heating flow platform for the continuous processing of material. In the Bohlmann-Rahtz reaction, the use of a Brønsted acid catalyst allows Michael addition and cyclodehydration to be carried out in a single step without isolation of intermediates to give the corresponding trisubstituted pyridine as a single regioisomer in good yield. Furthermore, 3-substituted propargyl aldehydes undergo Hantzsch dihydropyridine synthesis in preference to Bohlmann-Rahtz reaction in a very high yielding process that is readily transferred to continuous flow processing.

Hygroscopic holey graphene aerogel fibers enable highly efficient moisture capture, heat allocation and microwave absorption.

Project description:Aerogel fibers have been recognized as the rising star in the fields of thermal insulation and wearable textiles. Yet, the lack of functionalization in aerogel fibers limits their applications. Herein, we report hygroscopic holey graphene aerogel fibers (LiCl@HGAFs) with integrated functionalities of highly efficient moisture capture, heat allocation, and microwave absorption. LiCl@HGAFs realize the water sorption capacity over 4.15 g g-1, due to the high surface area and high water uptake kinetics. Moreover, the sorbent can be regenerated through both photo-thermal and electro-thermal approaches. Along with the water sorption and desorption, LiCl@HGAFs experience an efficient heat transfer process, with a heat storage capacity of 6.93 kJ g-1. The coefficient of performance in the heating and cooling mode can reach 1.72 and 0.70, respectively. Notably, with the entrapped water, LiCl@HGAFs exhibit broad microwave absorption with a bandwidth of 9.69 GHz, good impedance matching, and a high attenuation constant of 585. In light of these findings, the multifunctional LiCl@HGAFs open an avenue for applications in water harvest, heat allocation, and microwave absorption. This strategy also suggests the possibility to functionalize aerogel fibers towards even broader applications.

Facile Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of 2D Imine-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Exceptional Iodine Capture.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as auspicious porous adsorbents for radioiodine capture. However, their conventional solvothermal synthesis demands multiday synthetic times and anaerobic conditions, largely hampering their practical use. To tackle these challenges, we present a facile microwave-assisted synthesis of 2D imine-linked COFs, Mw-TFB-BD-X, (X = -CH3 and -OCH3) under air within just 1 h. The resultant COFs possessed higher crystallinity, better yields, and more uniform morphology than their solvothermal counterparts. Remarkably, Mw-TFB-BD-CH3 and Mw-TFB-BD-OCH3 exhibited exceptional iodine adsorption capacities of 7.83 g g-1 and 7.05 g g-1, respectively, placing them among the best-performing COF adsorbents for static iodine vapor capture. Moreover, Mw-TFB-BD-CH3 and Mw-TFB-BD-OCH3 can be reused 5 times with no apparent loss in the adsorption capacity. The exceptionally high iodine adsorption capacities and excellent reusability of COFs were mainly attributed to their uniform spherical morphology and enhanced chemical stability due to the in-built electron-donating groups, despite their low surface areas. This work establishes a benchmark for developing advanced iodine adsorbents that combine fast kinetics, high capacity, excellent reusability, and facile rapid synthesis, a set of appealing features that remain challenging to merge in COF adsorbents so far.
