Anisotropic Carbon Nanotube Structures with High Aspect Ratio Nanopores for Li-Ion Battery Anodes.

ABSTRACT: Technological advances in membrane technology, catalysis, and electrochemical energy storage require the fabrication of controlled pore structures at ever smaller length scales. It is therefore important to develop processes allowing for the fabrication of materials with controlled submicron porous structures. We propose a combination of colloidal lithography and chemical vapor deposition of carbon nanotubes to create continuous straight pores with diameters down to 100 nm in structures with thicknesses of more than 300 μm. These structures offer unique features, including continuous and parallel pores with aspect ratios in excess of 3000, a low pore tortuosity, good electrical conductivity, and electrochemical stability. We demonstrate that these structures can be used in Li-ion batteries by coating the carbon nanotubes with Si as an active anode material.

Spinodal Decomposition Method for Structuring Germanium-Carbon Li-Ion Battery Anodes.

Project description:To increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), high-capacity anodes which alloy with Li ions at a low voltage against Li/Li+ have been actively pursued. So far, Si has been studied the most extensively because of its high specific capacity and cost efficiency; however, Ge is an interesting alternative. While the theoretical specific capacity of Ge (1600 mAh g-1) is only half that of Si, its density is more than twice as high (Ge, 5.3 g cm-3; Si, 2.33 g cm-3), and therefore the charge stored per volume is better than that of Si. In addition, Ge has a 400 times higher ionic diffusivity and 4 orders of magnitude higher electronic conductivity compared to Si. However, similarly to Si, Ge needs to be structured in order to manage stresses induced during lithiation and many reports have achieved sufficient areal loadings to be commercially viable. In this work, spinodal decomposition is used to make secondary particles of about 2 μm in diameter that consist of a mixture of ∼30 nm Ge nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix. The secondary structure of these germanium-carbon particles allows for specific capacities of over 1100 mAh g-1 and a capacity retention of 91.8% after 100 cycles. Finally, high packing densities of ∼1.67 g cm-3 are achieved in blended electrodes by creating a bimodal size distribution with natural graphite.

Morphology engineering of silicon nanoparticles for better performance in Li-ion battery anodes.

Project description:Amorphous silicon nanoparticles were synthesized through pyrolysis of silane gas at temperatures ranging from 575 to 675 °C. According to the used temperature and silane concentration, two distinct types of particles can be obtained: at 625 °C, spherical particles with smooth surface and a low degree of aggregation, but at a higher temperature (650 °C) and lower silane concentration, particles with extremely rough surfaces and high degree of aggregation are found. This demonstrates the importance of the synthesis temperature on the morphology of silicon particles. The two types of silicon nanoparticles were subsequently used as active materials in a lithium half cell configuration, using LiPF6 in an alkylcarbonate-based electrolyte, in order to investigate the impact of the particles morphology on the cycling performances of silicon anode material. The difference in morphology of the particles resulted in different volume expansions, which impacts the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formation and, as a consequence, the lifetime of the electrode. Half-cells fabricated from spherical particles demonstrated almost 70% capacity retention for over 300 cycles, while the cells made from the rough, aggregated particles showed a sharp decrease in capacity after the 20th cycle. The cycling results underline the importance of Si particle engineering and its influence on the lifetime of Si-based materials.

Red Phosphorus Potassium-Ion Battery Anodes.

Project description:Phosphorus (P) possesses the highest theoretical specific capacity (865 mA h g-1) among all the elements for potassium-ion battery (PIB) anodes. Although Red P (RP) has intrinsic advantages over its allotropes, including low cost and nontoxicity, and simpler preparation, it is yet unknown to effectively activate it into a high-performance PIB anode. Here, high-performance RP PIB anodes are reported. Two important factors are found to facilitate RP react with K-ions reversibly: i) nanoscale RP particles are dispersed evenly in a conductive carbon matrix composed of multiwall carbon nanotubes and Ketjen black that provide an efficient electrical pathway and a tough scaffold. ii) The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectrum and the electrochemical performance perhaps show that no P-C bond formation is beneficial to allow K-ions to react with RP effectively. As a result, the RP/C electrodes deliver a reversible specific capacity of ≈750 mA h g-1 and exhibit a high-rate capability (≈300 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1). RP/C full cells using potassium manganese hexacyanoferrate as cathode show a long cycling life (680 cycles) at a current density of 1000 mA g-1, in addition, a pouch-type battery is built to demonstrate practical applications.

Rice husks as a sustainable source of nanostructured silicon for high performance Li-ion battery anodes.

Project description:The recovery of useful materials from earth-abundant substances is of strategic importance for industrial processes. Despite the fact that Si is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust, processes to form Si nanomaterials is usually complex, costly and energy-intensive. Here we show that pure Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) can be derived directly from rice husks (RHs), an abundant agricultural byproduct produced at a rate of 1.2 × 10(8) tons/year, with a conversion yield as high as 5% by mass. And owing to their small size (10-40 nm) and porous nature, these recovered SiNPs exhibits high performance as Li-ion battery anodes, with high reversible capacity (2,790 mA h g(-1), seven times greater than graphite anodes) and long cycle life (86% capacity retention over 300 cycles). Using RHs as the raw material source, overall energy-efficient, green, and large scale synthesis of low-cost and functional Si nanomaterials is possible.

A Versatile Carbon Nanotube-Based Scalable Approach for Improving Interfaces in Li-Ion Battery Electrodes.

Project description:Resistive interfaces within the electrodes limit the energy and power densities of a battery, for example, a Li-ion battery (LIB). Typically, active materials are mixed with conductive additives in organic solvents to form a slurry, which is then coated on current collectors (e.g., bare or carbon-coated Al foils) to reduce the inherent resistance of the active material. Although many approaches using nanomaterials to either replace Al foils or improve conductivity within the active materials have been previously demonstrated, the resistance at the current collector active material interface (CCAMI), a key factor for enhancing the energy and power densities, remains unaddressed. We show that carbon nanotubes (CNTs), either directly grown or spray-coated on Al foils, are highly effective in reducing the CCAMI resistance of traditional LIB cathode materials (LiFePO4 or LFP and LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 or NMC). Moreover, the CNT coatings displace the need for currently used toxic organic solvents (e.g., N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) by providing capillary channels, which improve the wetting of aqueous dispersions containing active materials. The vertically aligned CNT-coated electrodes exhibited energy densities as high as (1) ∼500 W h kg-1 at ∼170 W kg-1 for LFP and (2) ∼760 W h kg-1 at ∼570 W kg-1 for NMC. The LIBs with CCAMI-engineered electrodes withstood discharge rates as high as 600 mA g-1 for 500 cycles in the case of LFP, where commercial electrodes failed. The CNT-based CCAMI engineering approach is versatile with wide applicability to improve the performance of even textured active materials for both cathodes and anodes.

Practical Approach to Enhance Compatibility in Silicon/Graphite Composites to Enable High-Capacity Li-Ion Battery Anodes.

Project description:There is an urgent need to improve the energy density of Li-ion batteries to enable mass-market penetration of electric vehicles, grid-scale energy storage, and next-generation consumer electronics. Silicon-graphite composites are currently the most plausible anode material to overcome the capacity limit of graphite or poor cycling performance of silicon. One serious and unrecognized limitation to the use of the composite as an anode is the incompatibility of hydrophobic (natural) graphite with the hydrophilic Si, which adversely affects battery performance. Herein, we report a novel, practical approach to modify the graphite resulting in the formation of a hard carbon coating and graphene sheets that give rise to higher compatibility with Si nanoparticles in the composite. Electrochemical and battery testing of the composite (10 wt % Si) anode shows higher reversible capacity (10% at C/12 and 20% at C/2) than the composite with unmodified graphite reaching ∼600 mAh/g with 95% retention after 100 cycles. The enhanced battery performance is explained by the uniform distribution of Si nanoparticles at the modified graphite surface due to the presence of graphene conductive networks and a thin, oxygen-rich, amorphous carbon layer on the surface of graphite particles, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). This work provides a new approach to prepare graphite compatible materials that can work with hydrophilic components other than silicon for various applications other than batteries.

Yucca fern shaped CuO nanowires on Cu foam for remitting capacity fading of Li-ion battery anodes.

Project description:To remit capacity fading of lithium ion battery (LIB) anodes, freestanding yucca fern shaped CuO nanowires (NWs) on Cu foams are fabricated as anodes by combining facile and scalable anodization of copper foams followed by calcination. The porous and radial configuration of the hierarchical CuO NWs on the Cu foam substrate guarantees the remarkably improved electrochemical performance with durable cycle stability and excellent rate capability compared with CuO NWs on Cu foils. The reversible capacity remains 461.5 mAh/g after 100 repeated cycles at a current density of 100 mA/g, and a capacity of 150.6 mAh/g even at a high rate of 1000 mA/g. By examining the surface morphology of the cycled samples, possible performance fading route is proposed. The 3D CuO NWs network with a porous architecture simutaneously reduces the ion diffusion distances, promotes the electrolyte permeation and electronic conductivity. This novel strategy might open a new window to develop durable CuO based composite anodes for LIBs.

Applications of Carbon Nanotubes for Lithium Ion Battery Anodes.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have displayed great potential as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to their unique structural, mechanical, and electrical properties. The measured reversible lithium ion capacities of CNT-based anodes are considerably improved compared to the conventional graphite-based anodes. Additionally, the opened structure and enriched chirality of CNTs can help to improve the capacity and electrical transport in CNT-based LIBs. Therefore, the modification of CNTs and design of CNT structure provide strategies for improving the performance of CNT-based anodes. CNTs could also be assembled into free-standing electrodes without any binder or current collector, which will lead to increased specific energy density for the overall battery design. In this review, we discuss the mechanism of lithium ion intercalation and diffusion in CNTs, and the influence of different structures and morphologies on their performance as anode materials for LIBs.

Conformal High-Aspect-Ratio Solid Electrolyte Thin Films for Li-Ion Batteries by Atomic Layer Deposition.

Project description:Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is a state-of-the-art solid electrolyte material for thin-film microbatteries. These applications require conformal thin films on challenging 3D surface structures, and among the advanced thin-film deposition techniques, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is believed to stand out in terms of producing appreciably conformal thin films. Here we quantify the conformality (i.e., the evenness of deposition) of thin ALD-grown LiPON films using lateral high-aspect-ratio test structures. Two different lithium precursors, lithium tert-butoxide (LiOtBu) and lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (Li-HMDS), were investigated in combination with diethyl phosphoramidate as the source of oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen. The results indicate that the film growth proceeded significantly deeper into the 3D cavities for the films grown from LiOtBu, while the Li-HMDS-based films grew more evenly initially, right after the cavity entrances. These observations can be explained by differences in the precursor diffusion and reactivity. The results open possibilities for the use of LiPON as a solid electrolyte in batteries with high-surface-area electrodes. This could enable faster charging and discharging as well as the use of thin-film technology in fabricating thin-film electrodes of meaningful charge capacity.
