Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause nosocomial infections, especially in ventilated or cystic fibrosis patients. Highly pathogenic isolates express the phospholipase ExoU, an effector of the type III secretion system that acts on plasma membrane lipids, causing membrane rupture and host cell necrosis.
