Hepatitis C virus (HCV; genus <i>Hepacivirus</i>) represents a major public health problem, infecting about three per cent of the human population. Because no animal reservoir carrying closely related hepaciviruses has been identified, the zoonotic origins of HCV still remain unresolved.
