Characterising lithium-ion electrolytes via operando Raman microspectroscopy.

ABSTRACT: Knowledge of electrolyte transport and thermodynamic properties in Li-ion and beyond Li-ion technologies is vital for their continued development and success. Here, we present a method for fully characterising electrolyte systems. By measuring the electrolyte concentration gradient over time via operando Raman microspectroscopy, in tandem with potentiostatic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the Fickian "apparent" diffusion coefficient, transference number, thermodynamic factor, ionic conductivity and resistance of charge-transfer were quantified within a single experimental setup. Using lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in tetraglyme (G4) as a model system, our study provides a visualisation of the electrolyte concentration gradient; a method for determining key electrolyte properties, and a necessary technique for correlating bulk intermolecular electrolyte structure with the described transport and thermodynamic properties.

Hollow-core optical fibre sensors for operando Raman spectroscopy investigation of Li-ion battery liquid electrolytes.

Project description:Improved analytical tools are urgently required to identify degradation and failure mechanisms in Li-ion batteries. However, understanding and ultimately avoiding these detrimental mechanisms requires continuous tracking of complex electrochemical processes in different battery components. Here, we report an operando spectroscopy method that enables monitoring the chemistry of a carbonate-based liquid electrolyte during electrochemical cycling in Li-ion batteries with a graphite anode and a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode. By embedding a hollow-core optical fibre probe inside a lab-scale pouch cell, we demonstrate the effective evolution of the liquid electrolyte species by background-free Raman spectroscopy. The analysis of the spectroscopy measurements reveals changes in the ratio of carbonate solvents and electrolyte additives as a function of the cell voltage and show the potential to track the lithium-ion solvation dynamics. The proposed operando methodology contributes to understanding better the current Li-ion battery limitations and paves the way for studies of the degradation mechanisms in different electrochemical energy storage systems.

Understanding the lithium–sulfur battery redox reactions via operando confocal Raman microscopy

Project description:The complex interplay and only partial understanding of the multi-step phase transitions and reaction kinetics of redox processes in lithium–sulfur batteries are the main stumbling blocks that hinder the advancement and broad deployment of this electrochemical energy storage system. To better understand these aspects, here we report operando confocal Raman microscopy measurements to investigate the reaction kinetics of Li–S redox processes and provide mechanistic insights into polysulfide generation/evolution and sulfur deposition. Operando visualization and quantification of the reactants and intermediates enabled the characterization of potential-dependent rates during Li–S redox and the linking of the electronic conductivity of the sulfur-based electrode and concentrations of polysulfides to the cell performance. We also report the visualization of the interfacial evolution and diffusion processes of different polysulfides that demonstrate stepwise discharge and parallel recharge mechanisms during cell operation. These results provide fundamental insights into the mechanisms and kinetics of Li–S redox reactions. The complex redox processes in lithium–sulfur batteries are not yet fully understood at the fundamental level. Here, the authors report operando confocal Raman microscopy measurements to provide mechanistic insights into polysulfide evolution and sulfur deposition during battery cycling.

Operando monitoring of thermal runaway in commercial lithium-ion cells via advanced lab-on-fiber technologies.

Project description:Operando monitoring of complex physical and chemical activities inside rechargeable lithium-ion batteries during thermal runaway is critical to understanding thermal runaway mechanisms and giving early warning of safety-related failure. However, most existing sensors cannot survive during such extremely hazardous thermal runaway processes (temperature up to 500 °C accompanied by fire and explosion). To address this, we develop a compact and multifunctional optical fiber sensor (12 mm in length and 125 µm in diameter) capable of insertion into commercial 18650 cells to continuously monitor internal temperature and pressure effects during cell thermal runaway. We observe a stable and reproducible correlation between the cell thermal runaway and the optical response. The sensor's signal shows two internal pressure peaks corresponding to safety venting and initiation of thermal runaway. Further analysis reveals that a scalable solution for predicting imminent thermal runaway is the detection of the abrupt turning range of the differential curves of cell temperature and pressure, which corresponds to an internal transformation between the cell reversible and irreversible reactions. By raising an alert even before safety venting, this new operando measurement tool can provide crucial capabilities in cell safety assessment and warning of thermal runaway.

Lithium Insertion into Graphitic Carbon Observed via Operando Kerr-Gated Raman Spectroscopy Enables High State of Charge Diagnostics.

Project description:Monitoring the precise lithium inventory of the graphitic carbon electrode within the Li-ion battery, in order to assess cell aging, has remained challenging. Herein, operando electrochemical Kerr-gated Raman spectroscopy measurements on microcrystalline graphite during complete lithium insertion and extraction are reported and compared to conventional continuous-wave Raman microscopy. Suppression of the fluorescence emission signals via use of the Kerr gate enabled the measurement of the Raman graphitic bands of highly lithiated graphite where 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1 for Li x C6. The broad graphitic band initially centered at ca. 1590 cm-1 for Li0.5C6 linearly shifted to ca. 1564 cm-1 with further lithiation to LiC6, thus offering a sensitive diagnostic tool to interrogate high states of charge of graphitic carbon-based negative electrodes.

Superconcentrated electrolytes for a high-voltage lithium-ion battery.

Project description:Finding a viable electrolyte for next-generation 5 V-class lithium-ion batteries is of primary importance. A long-standing obstacle has been metal-ion dissolution at high voltages. The LiPF6 salt in conventional electrolytes is chemically unstable, which accelerates transition metal dissolution of the electrode material, yet beneficially suppresses oxidative dissolution of the aluminium current collector; replacing LiPF6 with more stable lithium salts may diminish transition metal dissolution but unfortunately encounters severe aluminium oxidation. Here we report an electrolyte design that can solve this dilemma. By mixing a stable lithium salt LiN(SO2F)2 with dimethyl carbonate solvent at extremely high concentrations, we obtain an unusual liquid showing a three-dimensional network of anions and solvent molecules that coordinate strongly to Li(+) ions. This simple formulation of superconcentrated LiN(SO2F)2/dimethyl carbonate electrolyte inhibits the dissolution of both aluminium and transition metal at around 5 V, and realizes a high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/graphite battery that exhibits excellent cycling durability, high rate capability and enhanced safety.

Enhanced Ion Solvation and Conductivity in Lithium-Ion Electrolytes via Tailored EMC-TMS Solvent Mixtures: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

Project description:The development of stable, high-performance electrolytes is essential to addressing the safety concerns and limited lifespan caused by the thermal and chemical instability of traditional organic carbonate-based electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study examined the potential of mixed solvent systems, specifically ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) and tetramethylene sulfone (TMS), to modify ion solvation and improve ionic conductivity in LIB electrolytes. Through molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the solvation structure and transport properties of lithium ions (Li+) in these solvent environments. The inclusion of TMS altered the solvation structure, with TMS molecules preferentially coordinating with Li+ ions, displacing PF6 - anions and reducing their electrostatic interference. Our results demonstrated a synergistic interaction between EMC and TMS, where an EMC/TMS ratio of 1:2 led to a significant improvement in ionic conductivity, reaching 0.91 mS/cm, with a corresponding Li+ transference number of 0.40. These findings provide key insights into the molecular-level interaction governing electrolyte behavior, offering guidance for the design of future solvent mixtures to improve the safety and efficiency of LIBs.

Operando spectral imaging of the lithium ion battery's solid-electrolyte interphase.

Project description:The lithium-ion battery is currently the preferred power source for applications ranging from smart phones to electric vehicles. Imaging the chemical reactions governing its function as they happen, with nanoscale spatial resolution and chemical specificity, is a long-standing open problem. Here, we demonstrate operando spectrum imaging of a Li-ion battery anode over multiple charge-discharge cycles using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Using ultrathin Li-ion cells, we acquire reference EELS spectra for the various constituents of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and then apply these "chemical fingerprints" to high-resolution, real-space mapping of the corresponding physical structures. We observe the growth of Li and LiH dendrites in the SEI and fingerprint the SEI itself. High spatial- and spectral-resolution operando imaging of the air-sensitive liquid chemistries of the Li-ion cell opens a direct route to understanding the complex, dynamic mechanisms that affect battery safety, capacity, and lifetime.

Monochromatic "Photoinitibitor"-Mediated Holographic Photopolymer Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:A new polymer electrolyte based on holographic photopolymer is designed and fabricated. Ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) are introduced as the photoinert substances. Upon laser-interference-pattern illumination, photopolymerization occurs within the constructive regions which subsequently results in a phase separation between the photogenerated polymer and unreacted EC-PC, affording holographic photopolymer electrolytes (HPEs) with a pitch of ≈740 nm. Interestingly, both diffraction efficiency and ionic conductivity increase with an augmentation of the EC-PC content. With 50 wt% of EC-PC, the diffraction efficiency and ionic conductivity are ≈60% and 2.13 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 30 °C, respectively, which are 60 times and 5 orders of magnitude larger than the electrolyte without EC-PC. Notably, the HPEs afford better anisotropy and more stable electrochemical properties when incorporating N,N-dimethylacrylamide. The HPEs exhibit good toughness under bending, excellent optical transparency under ambient conditions, and astonishing capabilities of reconstructing colored images. The HPEs here open a door to design flexible and transparent electronics with good mechanical, electrical, and optical functions.

Polymer Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries Studied by NMR Techniques.

Project description:This review is devoted to different types of novel polymer electrolytes for lithium power sources developed during the last decade. In the first part, the compositions and conductivity of various polymer electrolytes are considered. The second part contains NMR applications to the ion transport mechanism. Polymer electrolytes prevail over liquid electrolytes because of their exploitation safety and wider working temperature ranges. The gel electrolytes are mainly attractive. The systems based on polyethylene oxide, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate, etc., modified by nanoparticle (TiO2, SiO2, etc.) additives and ionic liquids are considered in detail. NMR techniques such as high-resolution NMR, solid-state NMR, magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR, NMR relaxation, and pulsed-field gradient NMR applications are discussed. 1H, 7Li, and 19F NMR methods applied to polymer electrolytes are considered. Primary attention is given to the revelation of the ion transport mechanism. A nanochannel structure, compositions of ion complexes, and mobilities of cations and anions studied by NMR, quantum-chemical, and ionic conductivity methods are discussed.
