Project description:The new curriculum of competency based medical education (CBME) implemented for phase1 medical undergraduates could not go on to completion due to the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The educational institutions therefore resorted to online teaching modalities over conventional class room teachings. Hence this study aimed to compare the academic performance of students between routine classroom teaching and online assisted teaching with assignments.94 phase 1 MBBS students admitted in the year 2019-2020 was divided into low (<50%), medium (51%-70%) and high performers (71%-100%) based on the average marks in the initial formative assessments. Academic performance of students in three types of teaching modalities namely classroom teaching (CRT), classroom teaching with assignment (CRA), and online assisted teaching (OAT) were compared using ANOVA. Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used to find the difference in marks between CRT and CRA which was calculated as gain 1 and that between OAT and CRT is gain 2. Out of 94 students, 19 were low performers, 53 were medium performers and 22 were high performers when grouped at baseline. All these groups performed significantly well with OAT compared to CRT and CRA. The overall performance of girls was found to be significantly higher. There was no significant difference between Gain 1 and Gain 2. All group of students scored high in assessments following online teaching compared to conventional classroom teaching. The gain of online teaching did not outweigh the conventional teaching methods implying that face to face lectures is still an effective teaching modality.

Project description:Universities worldwide have been conducting e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue education irrespective of faculties are familiar with e-education or not. This study assessed perception and preference for e-teaching amongst 438 faculty members. Results revealed that around half of teachers were conducting e-classes without any training, and they also had conducted examinations using online platforms. Teachers perceived e-teaching as effective during the pandemic, time-efficient, easy to share materials, unsuitable for monitoring or conducting practical classes and less effective for evaluation. More than three-fourths of the teachers preferred online teaching during the pandemic, and most preferred both physical and mixed teaching in the post-pandemic era. Their preferences were influenced by their age, teaching experience, academic discipline, current residency, training on online teaching, hours of online classes taught per week, internet connection used, types of classes and whether they had given online examinations. The major challenges in online teaching during COVID-19 were difficulty in practical work, difficulty in monitoring students and insufficient feedback. This study suggests online teaching during the pandemic and mixed teaching after the pandemic. Training faculty members on online teaching, designing e-platforms suitable for examinations and ensuring stable internet connections are also recommended for effective and smooth e-education.

Project description:With the development of the Internet and the growth of online resources, bioinformatics training for wet-lab biologists became necessary as a part of their education. This article describes a one-semester course 'Applied Bioinformatics Course' (ABC, http://abc.cbi.pku.edu.cn/) that the author has been teaching to biological graduate students at the Peking University and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences for the past 13 years. ABC is a hands-on practical course to teach students to use online bioinformatics resources to solve biological problems related to their ongoing research projects in molecular biology. With a brief introduction to the background of the course, detailed information about the teaching strategies of the course are outlined in the 'How to teach' section. The contents of the course are briefly described in the 'What to teach' section with some real examples. The author wishes to share his teaching experiences and the online teaching materials with colleagues working in bioinformatics education both in local and international universities.

Project description:Population-based studies of Staphylococcus aureus contribute to understanding the epidemiology of S. aureus infection. We enrolled surgical inpatients admitted to an African tertiary-care hospital in order to prospectively analyze the nosocomial impact of S. aureus. Data collection included an active sampling of the anterior nares and infectious foci within 48 h after admission and subsequently when clinically indicated. All S. aureus isolates were spa and agr genotyped. Possession of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) and other toxin genes was determined. We analyzed antibiotic susceptibility profiles by VITEK 2 systems and verified methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) by mecA/C PCR. Among 325 patients, 15.4% carried methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) at admission, while 3.7% carried MRSA. The incidence densities of nosocomial infections due to MSSA and MRSA were 35.4 and 6.2 infections per 10,000 patient-days, respectively. Among all 47 nosocomial infections, skin and soft-tissue (40.4%) and bones or joints' (25.5%) infections predominated. Six (12.7%) infection-related S. aureus isolates harbored PVL genes including two (4.2%) MRSA: overall, seventeen (36.2%) isolates carried pyrogenic toxin superantigens or other toxin genes. This study illustrates the considerable nosocomial impact of S. aureus in a Nigerian University hospital. Furthermore, they indicate a need for effective approaches to curtail nosocomial acquisition of multidrug-resistant S. aureus.

Project description:Recent advances in computer hardware and software, particularly the availability of machine learning libraries, allow the introduction of data-based topics such as machine learning into the Biophysical curriculum for undergraduate and/or graduate levels. However, there are many practical challenges of teaching machine learning to advanced-level students in the biophysics majors, who often do not have a rich computational background. Aiming to overcome such challenges, we present an educational study, including the design of course topics, pedagogical tools, and assessments of student learning, to develop the new methodology to incorporate the basis of machine learning in an existing Biophysical elective course, and engage students in exercises to solve problems in an interdisciplinary field. In general, we observed that students had ample curiosity to learn and apply machine learning algorithms to predict molecular properties. Notably, feedback from the students suggests that care must be taken to ensure student preparations for understanding the data-driven concepts and fundamental coding aspects required for using machine learning algorithms. This work establishes a framework for future teaching approaches that unite machine learning and any existing course in the biophysical curriculum, while also pinpointing the critical challenges that educators and students will likely face.

Project description:BackgroundLearning environment (LE) research has been given priority in higher education institutions globally because of its influence on learning processes and outcomes. Although studies reporting the perceptions of health science students about LE in Nigeria are available, none have compared the perceptions of students from different health professions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess final-year clinical students' perceptions of their LE from four programs (dentistry, medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy) and compared their LE perceptions.MethodsThis study adopted a cross-sectional study design using a mixed method approach. The quantitative survey involved all the final-year clinical students at the University of Ibadan, and they completed the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire. The qualitative aspect involved 24 consenting students in four focus group discussions.ResultsA total of 214 out of 223 copies of the DREEM questionnaire were duly completed and returned, yielding 96.0% response rate. The participants' mean age was 24 ± 2.3 years (ranged between 22 and 25 years, p = 0.001). The mean DREEM scores of the students from the four programs ranged between 119.68 ± 18.02 and 147.65 ± 15.89 out of a maximum of 200, interpreted as more positive than negative perceptions of LE. Physiotherapy students' DREEM score was significantly higher than those of medical, dental, and nursing students (p < 0.001). The DREEM scores of other students did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). Dental and medical students had similar positive perceptions. The qualitative aspect revealed that the students had positive perceptions of their teachers' knowledge base and self-acquisition of knowledge but negative perceptions of their teachers' communication skills, infrastructural facilities, lecturer-student relationships, and hostel accommodations.ConclusionAlthough the survey indicated that these clinical students had more positive than negative perceptions of their learning environment, the qualitative aspect of the study revealed many challenges that the students were confronted with. The clinical students' perception of their learning environment could be improved if the university authorities would address these challenges.

Project description:BackgroundThe reasons for the persistence of risky sexual behaviours among adolescents and young adults in sub-Saharan Africa despite the increasing knowledge about the associated risks continue to attract scholarly debates. Drawing from a cross-sectional study conducted among male and female Nigerian university students, we examined the relationship between family structure, family support and transactional sex.MethodsA pre-validated questionnaire was administered to 800 male and female students selected using stratified sampling; however, we performed the analysis on 630 participants who had ever engaged in sex. Transactional sex was operationalised as self-reporting of giving or receiving money, gifts or favour in exchange for sex. We fitted a list-wise logistic regression model to examine the relationship between family structure, family support and transactional sex while controlling for essential covariates.ResultsOf the 630 participants included in the analysis, 17.9% had given and 23.8% had received money, gift or favour in exchange for sex. Our bivariate analysis shows that individuals from polygamous families had higher odds of reporting that they have ever given (AOR: 1.89; CI: 1.05-3.39) or received (AOR: 1.85; CI: 1.85-3.19) money, gift or favour in exchange for sex; however, the relationship was not statistically significant after controlling for relevant covariates. After controlling for essential covariates, the odds of giving or receiving money, gift or favour in exchange for sex was 56% lower in individuals who received adequate family support compared to those who received no or insufficient family support.ConclusionIn conclusion, this paper lends support to the assertion that family structure and family support are protective factors against transactional sex among adolescents and young adults. Future surveys need to include a larger sample in order to explore the effect of single-parent and polygamous family on transactional sex in Nigeria where family formation is changing rapidly.

Project description:Physical distancing and inaccessibility to laboratory facilities created an opportunity to transition undergraduate research experiences to remote, digital platforms, adding another level of pedagogy to their training. Basic bioinformatics skills together with critical analysis of scientific literature are essential for addressing research questions in modern biology. The work presented here describes a fully online, collaborative research experience created to allow undergraduate students to learn those skills. The research experience was focused on the development and implementation of the Organonitrogen Biodegradation Database (ONDB, z.umn.edu/ondb). The ONDB was developed to catalog information about the cost, chemical properties, and biodegradation potential of commonly used organonitrogen compounds. A cross-institutional team of undergraduate researchers worked in collaboration with two faculty members and a postdoctoral fellow to develop the database. Students carried out extensive online literature searches and used a biodegradation prediction website to research and represent the microbial catabolism of different organonitrogen compounds. Participants employed computational tools such as R, Shiny, and flexdashboard to construct the database pages and interactive web interface for the ONDB. Worksheets and forms were created to encourage other students and researchers to gather information about organonitrogen compounds and expand the database. Student progress was evaluated through biweekly project meetings, presentations, and a final reflection. The ONDB undergraduate research experience provided a platform for students to learn bioinformatics skills while simultaneously developing a teaching and research tool for others.

Project description:IntroductionDepression affects 32% of university students and Major Depressive Episode (MDE) externalizing symptoms indicate the severity of the case. This study assessed MDE externalizing symptom prevalence and associated factors among university students, with emphasis on aspects related to the academic environment, including interpersonal relationships and study area chosen by students.MethodsA census was performed on new students in the first semester of 2017 at a university in Southern Brazil. Depressive symptom prevalence was assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The multivariate analysis of the associated factors followed a hierarchical model, using Poisson regression with backward selection.ResultsMDE externalizing symptoms were present in 20% of the university students and were more frequent among females, those with brown, black or other skin color in comparison to those with white skin color. Individuals with a family history of depression, minority sexual orientation, negative self-reported academic performance, students taking courses in the area of Linguistics, Modern Languages and Arts and students who reported strong conflicts with university teachers or colleagues also had higher prevalence of externalizing symptoms.ConclusionIt is important for education institutions to train teachers to identify and deal adequately with students who have externalizing symptoms of MDE. In addition, education institutions need to pay attention to conflicts, both between students and also between students and teachers in order to take preventive measures in these circumstances.

Project description:IntroductionTeaching is an important competency in graduate medical education (GME). Many residency programs have implemented curricula to develop residents' teaching skills and observed structured teaching experiences (OSTEs) have been used to assess these skills. There is an increasing focus on building teaching skills earlier in the medical education continuum, however, there is limited literature on assessing medical students' teaching skills. The authors developed an OSTE for medical students enrolled in a students-as-teachers course to address this gap and provide formative feedback on teaching skills.Materials and methodsOSTEs were conducted for fourth-year medical students (M4s) enrolled in a Students as Teachers Advanced Elective at a US medical school. An M4 observed a first-year medical student (M1) during a simulated encounter with a standardized patient. The M4 gave feedback and a chalk talk. A physician observer assessed the M4's teaching using the modified Stanford Faculty Development Program (SFDP) questionnaire. The M1s and M4s also completed the SFDP. The M4 completed pre- and post-OSTE self-efficacy surveys (score range 6-30) and a post-OSTE acceptability survey.ResultsAll (30/30) M4s completed the OSTE. The SFDP identified common teaching strengths and areas for growth. ANOVA tests demonstrated significant differences between the mean (SD) scores from physician assessors, M1s, and M4s [4.56 (0.63) vs. 4.87 (0.35) vs. 4.08 (0.74), p<0.001]. There was a statistically significant difference in mean (SD) self-efficacy scores pre- and post-OSTE [18.72 (3.39) vs. 23.83 (3.26), p<0.001]. All M4s (30/30) somewhat or strongly agreed with all three OSTE acceptability questions.Lessons learnedThe authors successfully conducted an OSTE in an M4 advanced elective. The OSTE was highly acceptable to participants, and M4s demonstrated improved teaching self-efficacy. Further research should explore the validity of the OSTE to measure medical students' teaching skills and the long-term impact of developing teaching skills in medical school.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40670-023-01952-3.
