Caffeine-Derived Noble Carbons as Ball Milling-Resistant Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Capacitors.

ABSTRACT: Energy consumption is a growing phenomenon in our society causing many negative effects such as global warming. There is a need for the development of new sustainable materials for energy storage. Carbons are materials derivable from biowaste that can rather easily store energy due to their high conductivity and surface area. However, their large-scale processing is challenging as derived materials can be rather heterogeneous and homogenization requires ball milling, a process that can damage carbons in the process of oxidation. Herein, we have prepared caffeine-derived noble nitrogen-doped carbon that withstands the ball milling process without significant oxidation. Additionally, it performs extraordinarily as a cathode material for lithium-ion capacitors, making it an attractive biowaste-derived alternative to commercial heavy metal cathodes.

Na0.76V6O15/Activated Carbon Hybrid Cathode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Capacitors.

Project description:Lithium-ion hybrid capacitors (LICs) are regarded as one of the most promising next generation energy storage devices. Commercial activated carbon materials with low cost and excellent cycling stability are widely used as cathode materials for LICs, however, their low energy density remains a significant challenge for the practical applications of LICs. Herein, Na0.76V6O15 nanobelts (NaVO) were prepared and combined with commercial activated carbon YP50D to form hybrid cathode materials. Credit to the synergism of its capacitive effect and diffusion-controlled faradaic effect, NaVO/C hybrid cathode displays both superior cyclability and enhanced capacity. LICs were assembled with the as-prepared NaVO/C hybrid cathode and artificial graphite anode which was pre-lithiated. Furthermore, 10-NaVO/C//AG LIC delivers a high energy density of 118.9 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 220.6 W kg-1 and retains 43.7 Wh kg-1 even at a high power density of 21,793.0 W kg-1. The LIC can also maintain long-term cycling stability with capacitance retention of approximately 70% after 5000 cycles at 1 A g-1. Accordingly, hybrid cathodes composed of commercial activated carbon and a small amount of high energy battery-type materials are expected to be a candidate for low-cost advanced LICs with both high energy density and power density.

MoS<sub>2</sub>/carbon composites prepared by ball-milling and pyrolysis for the high-rate and stable anode of lithium ion capacitors.

Project description:Lithium ion capacitors (LICs), bridging the advantages of batteries and electrochemical capacitors, are regarded as one of the most promising energy storage devices. Nevertheless, it is always limited by the anodes that accompany with low capacity and poor rate performance. Here, we develop a versatile and scalable method including ball-milling and pyrolysis to synthesize exfoliated MoS2 supported by N-doped carbon matrix derived from chitosan, which is encapsulated by pitch-derived carbon shells (MoS2/CP). Because the carbon matrix with high nitrogen content can improve the electron conductivity, the robust carbon shells can suppress the volume expansion during cycles, and the sufficient exfoliation of lamellar MoS2 can reduce the ions transfer paths, the MoS2/CP electrode delivers high specific capacity (530 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1), remarkable rate capability (230 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1) and superior cycle performance (73% retention after 250 cycles). Thereby, the LICs, composed of MoS2/CP as the anode and commercial activated carbon (21 KS) as the cathode, exhibit high power density of 35.81 kW kg-1 at 19.86 W h kg-1 and high energy density of 87.74 W h kg-1 at 0.253 kW kg-1.

Activated carbons derived from coconut shells as high energy density cathode material for Li-ion capacitors.

Project description:In this manuscript, a dramatic increase in the energy density of ~ 69?Wh kg?¹ and an extraordinary cycleability ~ 2000 cycles of the Li-ion hybrid electrochemical capacitors (Li-HEC) is achieved by employing tailored activated carbon (AC) of ~ 60% mesoporosity derived from coconut shells (CS). The AC is obtained by both physical and chemical hydrothermal carbonization activation process, and compared to the commercial AC powders (CAC) in terms of the supercapacitance performance in single electrode configuration vs. Li. The Li-HEC is fabricated with commercially available Li?Ti?O?? anode and the coconut shell derived AC as cathode in non-aqueous medium. The present research provides a new routine for the development of high energy density Li-HEC that employs a mesoporous carbonaceous electrode derived from bio-mass precursors.

Direct Regenerating Cathode Materials from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Recycling cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is critical to a sustainable society as it will relief valuable but scarce recourse crises and reduce environment burdens simultaneously. Different from conventional hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling methods, direct regeneration relies on non-destructive cathode-to-cathode mode, and therefore, more time and energy-saving along with an increased economic return and reduced CO2 footprint. This review retrospects the history of direct regeneration and discusses state-of-the-art development. The reported methods, including high-temperature solid-state, hydrothermal/ionothermal, molten salt thermochemistry, and electrochemical method, are comparatively introduced, targeting at illustrating their underlying regeneration mechanism and applicability. Further, representative repairing and upcycling studies on wide-applied cathodes, including LiCoO2 (LCO), ternary oxides, LiFePO4 (LFP), and LiMn2 O4 (LMO), are presented, with an emphasis on milestone cases. Despite these achievements, there remain several critical issues that shall be addressed before the commercialization of the mentioned direct regeneration methods.

Optimization of Layered Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:This review presents a survey of the literature on recent progress in lithium-ion batteries, with the active sub-micron-sized particles of the positive electrode chosen in the family of lamellar compounds LiMO₂, where M stands for a mixture of Ni, Mn, Co elements, and in the family of yLi₂MnO₃•(1 - y)LiNi½Mn½O₂ layered-layered integrated materials. The structural, physical, and chemical properties of these cathode elements are reported and discussed as a function of all the synthesis parameters, which include the choice of the precursors and of the chelating agent, and as a function of the relative concentrations of the M cations and composition y. Their electrochemical properties are also reported and discussed to determine the optimum compositions in order to obtain the best electrochemical performance while maintaining the structural integrity of the electrode lattice during cycling.

Li2ZrO3-Coated Monocrystalline LiAl0.06Mn1.94O4 Particles as Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Li2ZrO3-coated and Al-doped micro-sized monocrystalline LiMn2O4 powder is synthesized through solid-state reaction, and the electrochemical performance is investigated as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It is found that Li2ZrO3-coated LiAl0.06Mn1.94O4 delivers a discharge capacity of 110.90 mAhg-1 with 94% capacity retention after 200 cycles at room temperature and a discharge capacity of 104.4 mAhg-1 with a capacity retention of 87.8% after 100 cycles at 55 °C. Moreover, Li2ZrO3-coated LiAl0.06Mn1.94O4 could retain 87.5% of its initial capacity at 5C rate. This superior cycling and rate performance can be greatly contributed to the synergistic effect of Al-doping and Li2ZrO3-coating.

Regeneration of NCM622 from end-of-life lithium-ion battery cathode materials.

Project description:The boom of the electric vehicle industry significantly aggravates the demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), especially the ternary cathode materials, however, the majority of end-of-life (EOL) LIBs on the market are batteries utilized in customer electronics. Here, we utilized the mixed EOL LIBs from cell phones and laptops to manufacture the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) cathode material. A feasible, high efficiency (99.98% Co, 99.98% Ni, 99.99% Mn, and 99.99% Li), and ultra-fast leaching of EOL LIB cathodes was achieved. Thermodynamic calculations suggested that the coordination number, coordination species concentrations, and fractions have significant effects on the apparent activation energy and the equilibrium of the leaching reactions. The remanufactured NCM622 cathode material demonstrated a well-ordered layered hexagonal structure with a low Li+/Ni2+ mixing ratio, which facilitated reliable reversible capacity, low polarization, high rate capabilities (163.8 mA h g-1), and capacity retention ratio (94.3%).

3D Porous Oxygen-Doped and Nitrogen-Doped Graphitic Carbons Derived from Metal Azolate Frameworks as Cathode and Anode Materials for High-Performance Dual-Carbon Sodium-Ion Hybrid Capacitors.

Project description:Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) in principle can utilize the advantages of batteries and supercapacitors and satisfy the cost demand of large-scale energy storage systems, but the sluggish kinetics and low capacities of its anode and cathode are yet to be overcome. Here, a strategy is reported to realize high-performance dual-carbon SIHCs using 3D porous graphitic carbon cathode and anode materials derived from metal-azolate framework-6s (MAF-6s). First, MAF-6s, with or without urea loading, are pyrolyzed to synthesize MAF-derived carbons (MDCs). Then, cathode materials are synthesized via the controlled KOH-assisted pyrolysis of MDCs (K-MDCs). K-MDCs, 3D graphitic carbons, resulting in a record-high surface area (5214 m2 g-1 ) being ≈four-fold higher than pristine MAF-6, oxygen-doped sites for high capacity, rich mesopores affording fast ion transport, and high capacity retention over 5000 charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, 3D porous MDC anode materials are synthesized from N-containing MAF-6 and exhibited to allow cycle stability over 5000 cycles. Furthermore, dual-carbon MDC//K-MDC SIHCs with different loadings (3 to 6 mg cm-2 ) are demonstrated to achieve high energy densities exceeding those of sodium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. Additionally, it allows an ultrafast-chargeable high power density of 20000 W kg-1 and robust cycle stability overcoming those of a typical battery.

Towards a High-Power Si@graphite Anode for Lithium Ion Batteries through a Wet Ball Milling Process.

Project description:Silicon-based anodes are extensively studied as an alternative to graphite for lithium ion batteries. However, silicon particles suffer larges changes in their volume (about 280%) during cycling, which lead to particles cracking and breakage of the solid electrolyte interphase. This process induces continuous irreversible electrolyte decomposition that strongly reduces the battery life. In this research work, different silicon@graphite anodes have been prepared through a facile and scalable ball milling synthesis and have been tested in lithium batteries. The morphology and structure of the different samples have been studied using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. We show how the incorporation of an organic solvent in the synthesis procedure prevents particles agglomeration and leads to a suitable distribution of particles and intimate contact between them. Moreover, the importance of the microstructure of the obtained silicon@graphite electrodes is pointed out. The silicon@graphite anode resulted from the wet ball milling route, which presents capacity values of 850 mA h/g and excellent capacity retention at high current density (≈800 mA h/g at 5 A/g).

A Study on High-Rate Performance of Graphite Nanostructures Produced by Ball Milling as Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Graphite, with appealing features such as good stability, high electrical conductivity, and natural abundance, is still the main commercial anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The charge-discharge rate capability of graphite anodes is not significant for the development of mobile devices and electric vehicles. Therefore, the feasibility investigation of the rate capability enhancement of graphite by manipulating the structure is worthwhile and of interest. In this study, an effective ball-milling process has been set up by which graphite nanostructures with a high surface area are produced. An in-depth investigation into the effect of ball milling on graphite structure as well as electrochemical performance, particularly rate capability, is conducted. Here, we report that graphite nanoflakes with 350 m2 g-1 surface area deliver retained capacity of ~75 mAh g-1 at 10 C (1 C = 372 mA g-1). Finally, the Li+ surface-storage mechanism is recognised by associating the structural characteristics with electrochemical properties.
