Benzenedisulfonic Acid as an ALD/MLD Building Block for Crystalline Metal-Organic Thin Films*.

ABSTRACT: Two new atomic/molecular layer deposition processes for depositing crystalline metal-organic thin films, built from 1,4-benzenedisulfonate (BDS) as the organic linker and Cu or Li as the metal node, are reported. The processes yield in-situ crystalline but hydrated Cu-BDS and Li-BDS films; in the former case, the crystal structure is of a previously known metal-organic-framework-like structure, while in the latter case not known from previous studies. Both hydrated materials can be readily dried to obtain the crystalline unhydrated phases. The stability and the ionic conductivity of the unhydrated Li-BDS films were characterized to assess their applicability as a thin film solid polymer Li-ion conductor.

Electrochemically Active In Situ Crystalline Lithium-Organic Thin Films by ALD/MLD.

Project description:Intercalated metal-organic framework (iMOF) type electrochemically active aromatic metal carboxylates are intriguing material candidates for various energy storage devices and microelectronics. In this work, we grow in situ crystalline thin films of such materials through atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD); the remarkable benefit of this approach is the possibility to evaluate their electrochemical properties in a simple cell configuration without any additives. Five organic linkers are investigated in combination with lithium: terephthalic acid (TPA), 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC), 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (NDC), 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (BPDC), and 4,4'-azobenzenedicarboxylic acid (AZO). In particular, the electrochemical activity of Li-PDC and the crystal structure of Li-AZO are addressed here for the first time. We believe that the in situ gas-phase thin-film deposition is a crucial requirement to benefit from the iMOF-type electrode materials in, e.g., microelectronics and wearable devices.

Layered Si-Ti oxide thin films with tailored electrical and optical properties by catalytic tandem MLD-ALD.

Project description:Oxides with well-controlled optical and electrical properties are key for numerous advances in nanotechnology, including energy, catalysis, sensors, and device applications. In this study we introduce layer-by-layer deposition of silicon-titanium layered oxide (Si-Ti LO) thin films using combined MLD-ALD methodology (M/ALD). The Si-Ti LO film deposition is achieved by acid-base catalysis establishing an overall catalytic tandem M/ALD super cycle (CT-M/ALD). The catalytic nature of the process allows relatively fast deposition cycles under mild conditions compared with the typical cycle time and conditions required for ALD processes with silane precursors. The Si-Ti LO thin films exhibit tuneable refractive index and electrical conductivities. The refractive index is set by the stoichiometry of Si- to Ti-oxide phases simply by selecting the MLD to ALD proportion in the CT-M/ALD super cycle, with low and high refractive index, respectively. Thermal treatment of Si-Ti LO thin films resulted in conductive thin films with both graphitic and Magnéli oxide phases. Enhanced conductivity and reduced onset temperature for Magnéli phase formation were obtained owing to the unique Si-Ti layer structure and stoichiometry attained by the CT-M/ALD process and facilitated by breaking of Si-C bonds and Red-Ox reactions between the Si sub-oxide and TiO2 phases leading to the conductive Magnéli phase. Hence, the embedded amine silane functions not only for catalysing Si-Ti LO deposition but also to further promote subsequent transformations during thermal processing. This work demonstrates the concept of embedding a meta-stable organic motif by the MLD step to facilitate transformation of an oxide phase by taking advantage of precise layer-by-layer deposition of alternating phases enabled by M/ALD.

Damage-free Metal Electrode Transfer to Monolayer Organic Single Crystalline Thin Films.

Project description:Solution-processed organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) are an essential building block for next-generation printed electronic devices. Organic semiconductors (OSCs) that can spontaneously form a molecular assembly play a vital role in the fabrication of OTFTs. OTFT fabrication processes consist of sequential deposition of functional layers, which inherently brings significant difficulties in realizing ideal properties because underlayers are likely to be damaged by application of subsequent layers. These difficulties are particularly prominent when forming metal contact electrodes directly on an OSC surface, due to thermal damage during vacuum evaporation and the effect of solvents during subsequent photolithography. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and facile technique to transfer contact electrodes to ultrathin OSC films and form an ideal metal/OSC interface. Photolithographically defined metal electrodes are transferred and laminated using a polymeric bilayer thin film. One layer is a thick sacrificial polymer film that makes the overall film easier to handle and is water-soluble for dissolution later. The other is a thin buffer film that helps the template adhere to a substrate electrostatically. The present technique does not induce any fatal damage in the substrate OSC layers, which leads to successful fabrication of OTFTs composed of monolayer OSC films with a mobility of higher than 10 cm2 V-1 s-1, a subthreshold swing of less than 100 mV decade-1, and a low contact resistance of 175 ??cm. The reproducibility of efficient contact fabrication was confirmed by the operation of a 10 × 10 array of monolayer OTFTs. The technique developed here constitutes a key step forward not only for practical OTFT fabrication but also potentially for all existing vertically stacked organic devices, such as light-emitting diodes and solar cells.

Solution Atomic Layer Deposition of Smooth, Continuous, Crystalline Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films.

Project description:For the first time, a procedure has been established for the growth of surface-anchored metal-organic framework (SURMOF) copper(II) benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (Cu-BDC) thin films of thickness control with single molecule accuracy. For this, we exploit the novel method solution atomic layer deposition (sALD). The sALD growth rate has been determined at 4.5 Å per cycle. The compact and dense SURMOF films grown at room temperature by sALD possess a vastly superior film thickness uniformity than those deposited by conventional solution-based techniques, such as dipping and spraying while featuring clear crystallinity from 100 nm thickness. The highly controlled layer-by-layer growth mechanism of sALD proves crucial to prevent unwanted side reactions such as Ostwald ripening or detrimental island growth, ensuring continuous Cu-BDC film coverage. This successful demonstration of sALD-grown compact continuous Cu-BDC SURMOF films is a paradigm change and provides a key advancement enabling a multitude of applications that require continuous and ultrathin coatings while maintaining tight film thickness specifications, which were previously unattainable with conventional solution-based growth methods.

Organic-Component Dependent Crystal Orientation and Electrical Transport Properties in ALD/MLD Grown ZnO-Organic Superlattices.

Project description:Two series of ZnO-organic superlattice thin films are fabricated with systematically controlled frequencies of monomolecular hydroquinone (HQ) or terephthalic acid (TPA) based organic layers within the ZnO matrix using the atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) technique. The two different organic components turn the film orientation to different directions and affect the electrical transport properties differently. While the TPA layers enhance the c-axis orientation of the ZnO layers and act as electrical barriers depressing the electrical conductivity even in low concentrations, adding the HQ layers enhances the a-axis orientation and initially increases the carrier concentration, effective mass, and electrical conductivity. The work thus demonstrates the intriguing but little exploited role of the organic component in controlling the properties of the inorganic matrix in advanced layer-engineered inorganic-organic superlattices.

Crystalline organic thin films for crystalline OLEDs (II): weak epitaxy growth of phenanthroimidazole derivatives.

Project description:The ordered molecular arrangement of crystalline organic semiconductors facilitates high carrier mobility and light emission in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. It has been demonstrated that the weak epitaxy growth (WEG) process is a valuable crystallization route for fabricating crystalline thin-film OLEDs (C-OLEDs). Recently, C-OLEDs based on crystalline thin films of phenanthroimidazole derivatives have exhibited excellent luminescent properties such as high photon output at low driving voltage and high power efficiency. Achieving effective control of organic crystalline thin film growth is crucial for the development of new C-OLEDs. Herein, we report the studies on morphology structure and growth behavior of the phenanthroimidazole derivative WEG thin films. The oriented growth of WEG crystalline thin films is determined by channeling and lattice matching between the inducing layer and active layer. Large-size and continuous WEG crystalline thin films can be obtained by controlling the growth conditions.

Electrostatic Design of Polar Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films.

Project description:In recent years, optical and electronic properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have increasingly shifted into the focus of interest of the scientific community. Here, we discuss a strategy for conveniently tuning these properties through electrostatic design. More specifically, based on quantum-mechanical simulations, we suggest an approach for creating a gradient of the electrostatic potential within a MOF thin film, exploiting collective electrostatic effects. With a suitable orientation of polar apical linkers, the resulting non-centrosymmetric packing results in an energy staircase of the frontier electronic states reminiscent of the situation in a pin-photodiode. The observed one dimensional gradient of the electrostatic potential causes a closure of the global energy gap and also shifts core-level energies by an amount equaling the size of the original band gap. The realization of such assemblies could be based on so-called pillared layer MOFs fabricated in an oriented fashion on a solid substrate employing layer by layer growth techniques. In this context, the simulations provide guidelines regarding the design of the polar apical linker molecules that would allow the realization of MOF thin films with the (vast majority of the) molecular dipole moments pointing in the same direction.

Flexible ε-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Terephthalate Thin-Film Magnets through ALD/MLD.

Project description:Pliable and lightweight thin-film magnets performing at room temperature are indispensable ingredients of the next-generation flexible electronics. However, conventional inorganic magnets based on f-block metals are rigid and heavy, whereas the emerging organic/molecular magnets are inferior regarding their magnetic characteristics. Here we fuse the best features of the two worlds, by tailoring ε-Fe2O3-terephthalate superlattice thin films with inbuilt flexibility due to the thin organic layers intimately embedded within the ferrimagnetic ε-Fe2O3 matrix; these films are also sustainable as they do not contain rare heavy metals. The films are grown with sub-nanometer-scale accuracy from gaseous precursors using the atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) technique. Tensile tests confirm the expected increased flexibility with increasing organic content reaching a 3-fold decrease in critical bending radius (2.4 ± 0.3 mm) as compared to ε-Fe2O3 thin film (7.7 ± 0.3 mm). Most remarkably, these hybrid ε-Fe2O3-terephthalate films do not compromise the exceptional intrinsic magnetic characteristics of the ε-Fe2O3 phase, in particular the ultrahigh coercive force (∼2 kOe) even at room temperature.

Controlling the morphology of side chain liquid crystalline block copolymer thin films through variations in liquid crystalline content.

Project description:In this paper, we describe methods for manipulating the morphology of side-chain liquid crystalline block copolymers through variations in the liquid crystalline content. By systematically controlling the covalent attachment of side chain liquid crystals to a block copolymer (BCP) backbone, the morphology of both the liquid crystalline (LC) mesophase and the phase-segregated BCP microstructures can be precisely manipulated. Increases in LC functionalization lead to stronger preferences for the anchoring of the LC mesophase relative to the substrate and the intermaterial dividing surface. By manipulating the strength of these interactions, the arrangement and ordering of the ultrathin film block copolymer nanostructures can be controlled, yielding a range of morphologies that includes perpendicular and parallel cylinders, as well as both perpendicular and parallel lamellae. Additionally, we demonstrate the utilization of selective etching to create a nanoporous liquid crystalline polymer thin film. The unique control over the orientation and order of the self-assembled morphologies with respect to the substrate will allow for the custom design of thin films for specific nanopatterning applications without manipulation of the surface chemistry or the application of external fields.

Glutamic Acid as Repeating Building Block for Bio-Based Films.

Project description:Commercial inexpensive preparations of poly-?-glutamic acid were used to obtain films made with a polypeptide constituted by a single repeating unit. The homopolymer was characterized by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and thermogravimetry, as well as by zeta potential and Z-average measurements. Manipulatable materials were obtained by casting film-forming solutions prepared at pH values between 3.0 and 4.0 and containing extensively dialyzed samples of the commercial product. The analysis of the mechanical properties highlighted a marked extensibility and plasticity of the films obtained without plasticizer, even though the addition of low amounts of glycerol (1-4%) was able to further increase these features. The characterization of poly-?-glutamic acid molecular species, performed by membrane ultrafiltration and size-exclusion chromatography, coupled with triple-detection analysis of the obtained fractions, suggested that biopolymer chain length is responsible not only for its capacity to form film, but also for conferring to the films different features depending on the homopolymer molecular weight.
