Selective and Additive-Free Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes Mediated by a DMSO-Tagged Molecular Cobalt Corrole Catalyst.

ABSTRACT: We report on the first cobalt corrole that effectively mediates the homogeneous hydrogenation of structurally diverse nitroarenes to afford the corresponding amines. The given catalyst is easily assembled prior to use from 4-tert-butylbenzaldehyde and pyrrole followed by metalation of the resulting corrole macrocycle with cobalt(II) acetate. The thus-prepared complex is self-contained in that the hydrogenation protocol is free from the requirement for adding any auxiliary reagent to elicit the catalytic activity of the applied metal complex. Moreover, a containment system is not required for the assembly of the hydrogenation reaction set-up as both the autoclave and the reaction vessels are readily charged under a regular laboratory atmosphere.

Supported Bimetallic AuPd Nanoparticles as a Catalyst for the Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes.

Project description:The solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was carried out using a supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by the modified impregnation method (MIm), as efficient catalyst >99% yield of aniline (AN) was obtained after 15 h at 90 °C, 3 bar H₂ that can be used without any further purification or separation, therefore reducing cost and energy input. Supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by MIm, was found to be active and stable even after four recycle experiments, whereas the same catalyst prepared by SIm was deactivated during the recycle experiments. The most effective catalyst was tested for the chemoselective hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) to 4-chloroaniline (CAN). The activation energy of CNB to CAN was found to be 25 kJ mol-1, while that of CNB to AN was found to be 31 kJ mol-1. Based on this, the yield of CAN was maximized (92%) by the lowering the reaction temperature to 25 °C.

Lignin Residue-Derived Carbon-Supported Nanoscale Iron Catalyst for the Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes and Aromatic Aldehydes.

Project description:Heterogeneous iron-based catalysts governing selectivity for the reduction of nitroarenes and aldehydes have received tremendous attention in the arena of catalysis, but relatively less success has been achieved. Herein, we report a green strategy for the facile synthesis of a lignin residue-derived carbon-supported magnetic iron (γ-Fe2O3/LRC-700) nanocatalyst. This active nanocatalyst exhibits excellent activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines, including pharmaceuticals (e.g., flutamide and nimesulide). Challenging and reducible functionalities such as halogens (e.g., chloro, iodo, and fluoro) and ketone, ester, and amide groups were tolerated. Moreover, biomass-derived aldehyde (e.g., furfural) and other aromatic aldehydes were also effective for the hydrogenation process, often useful in biomedical sciences and other important areas. Before and after the reaction, the γ-Fe2O3/LRC-700 nanocatalyst was thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Additionally, the γ-Fe2O3/LRC-700 nanocatalyst is stable and easily separated using an external magnet and recycled up to five cycles with no substantial drop in the activity. Eventually, sustainable and green credentials for the hydrogenation reactions of 4-nitrobenzamide to 4-aminobenzamide and benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol were assessed with the help of the CHEM21 green metrics toolkit.

An Adaptive Rhodium Catalyst to Control the Hydrogenation Network of Nitroarenes.

Project description:An adaptive catalytic system that provides control over the nitroarene hydrogenation network to prepare a wide range of aniline and hydroxylamine derivatives is presented. This system takes advantage of a delicate interplay between a rhodium(III) center and a Lewis acidic borane introduced in the secondary coordination sphere of the metal. The high chemoselectivity of the catalyst in the presence of various potentially vulnerable functional groups and its readiness to be deployed at a preparative scale illustrate its practicality. Mechanistic studies and density functional theory (DFT) methods were used to shed light on the mode of functioning of the catalyst and elucidate the origin of adaptivity. The competition for interaction with boron between a solvent molecule and a substrate was found crucial for adaptivity. When operating in THF, the reduction network stops at the hydroxylamine platform, whereas the reaction can be directed to the aniline platform in toluene.

Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes Using an Air-Stable Base-Metal Catalyst.

Project description:The reduction of nitroarenes to anilines as well as azobenzenes to hydrazobenzenes using a single base-metal catalyst is reported. The hydrogenation reactions are performed with an air-and moisture-stable manganese catalyst and proceed under relatively mild reaction conditions. The transformation tolerates a broad range of functional groups, affording aniline derivatives and hydrazobenzenes in high yields. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds via a bifunctional activation involving metal-ligand cooperative catalysis.

Defect-mediated selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes on nanostructured WS2.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are well known catalysts as both bulk and nanoscale materials. Two-dimensional (2-D) TMDs, which contain single- and few-layer nanosheets, are increasingly studied as catalytic materials because of their unique thickness-dependent properties and high surface areas. Here, colloidal 2H-WS2 nanostructures are used as a model 2-D TMD system to understand how high catalytic activity and selectivity can be achieved for useful organic transformations. Free-standing, colloidal 2H-WS2 nanostructures containing few-layer nanosheets are shown to catalyze the selective hydrogenation of a broad scope of substituted nitroarenes to their corresponding aniline derivatives in the presence of other reducible functional groups. Microscopic and computational studies reveal the important roles of sulfur vacancy-rich basal planes and tungsten-terminated edges, which are more abundant in nanostructured 2-D materials than in their bulk counterparts, in enabling the functional group selectivity. At tungsten-terminated edges and on regions of the basal planes having high concentrations of sulfur vacancies, vertical adsorption of the nitroarene is favored, thus facilitating hydrogen transfer exclusively to the nitro group due to geometric effects. At lower sulfur vacancy concentrations on the basal planes, parallel adsorption of the nitroarene is favored, and the nitro group is selectively hydrogenated due to a lower kinetic barrier. These mechanistic insights reveal how the various defect structures and configurations on 2-D TMD nanostructures facilitate functional group selectivity through distinct mechanisms that depend upon the adsorption geometry, which may have important implications for the design of new and enhanced 2-D catalytic materials across a potentially broad scope of reactions.

Ammonia borane dehydrogenation and selective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarene over a porous nickel-cobalt bimetallic catalyst.

Project description:The hydrolysis of ammonia borane is a promising strategy for hydrogen energy exploration and exploitation. The in situ produced hydrogen could be directly utilized in hydrogenation reactions. In this work, a bimetallic nickel-cobalt material with porous structure was developed through the pyrolysis of ZIF-67 incorporated with Ni ions. Through the introduction of Ni(NO3)2 as an etching agent, the ZIF-67 polyhedrons were transformed into hollow nanospheres, and further evolved into irregular nanosheets. The bimetallic NiCo phase was formed after pyrolysis in a nitrogen atmosphere at high temperature, with the decomposition and release of organic ligands as gaseous molecules under flowing nitrogen. The obtained bimetallic NiCo porous materials show superior catalytic performance towards hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane, thereby nitrobenzene with reducible functional groups can be reduced with high selectivity to the corresponding aniline.

A cobalt phosphide catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitriles.

Project description:The study of metal phosphide catalysts for organic synthesis is rare. We present, for the first time, a well-defined nano-cobalt phosphide (nano-Co2P) that can serve as a new class of catalysts for the hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines. While earth-abundant metal catalysts for nitrile hydrogenation generally suffer from air-instability (pyrophoricity), low activity and the need for harsh reaction conditions, nano-Co2P shows both air-stability and remarkably high activity for the hydrogenation of valeronitrile with an excellent turnover number exceeding 58000, which is over 20- to 500-fold greater than that of those previously reported. Moreover, nano-Co2P efficiently promotes the hydrogenation of a wide range of nitriles, which include di- and tetra-nitriles, to the corresponding primary amines even under just 1 bar of H2 pressure, far milder than the conventional reaction conditions. Detailed spectroscopic studies reveal that the high performance of nano-Co2P is attributed to its air-stable metallic nature and the increase of the d-electron density of Co near the Fermi level by the phosphidation of Co, which thus leads to the accelerated activation of both nitrile and H2. Such a phosphidation provides a promising method for the design of an advanced catalyst with high activity and stability in highly efficient and environmentally benign hydrogenations.

Facile Transfer Hydrogenation of N-Heteroarenes and Nitroarenes Using Magnetically Recoverable Pd@SPIONs Catalyst.

Project description:Catalysts with active, selective, and reusable features are desirable for sustainable development. The present investigation involved the synthesis and characterization of bear-surfaced ultrasmall Pd particles (<1 nm) loaded onto the surface of magnetic nanoparticles (8-10 nm). The amount of Pd loading onto the surface of magnetite is recorded as 2.8 wt %. The characterization process covered the utilization of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods. The Pd@Fe3O4 catalyst has shown remarkable efficacy in the hydrogenation of quinoline, resulting in the production of >99% N-ring hydrogenated (py-THQ) product. Additionally, the catalyst facilitated the conversion of nitroarenes into their corresponding aniline derivatives, where hydrogen was achieved by H2O molecules with the aid of tetrahydroxydiboron (THDB) as an equilibrium supportive at 80 °C in 1 h. The high efficiency of a transfer hydrogenation catalyst is closely related to the metal-support synergistic effect. The broader scope of functional group tolerance is evaluated. The potential mechanism underlying the hydrogenation process has been elucidated through the utilization of isotopic labeling investigations. The application of the heterocyclic compound hydrogenation reaction is extended to formulate the medicinally important tubular polymerization inhibitor drug synthesis. The investigation of the recyclability of Pd@Fe3O4 has been conducted.
