Development of a Virtual Three-Dimensional Assessment Scenario for Anatomical Education.

ABSTRACT: In anatomical education three-dimensional (3D) visualization technology allows for active and stereoscopic exploration of anatomy and can easily be adopted into medical curricula along with traditional 3D teaching methods. However, most often knowledge is still assessed with two-dimensional (2D) paper-and-pencil tests. To address the growing misalignment between learning and assessment, this viewpoint commentary highlights the development of a virtual 3D assessment scenario and perspectives from students and teachers on the use of this assessment tool: a 10-minute session of anatomical knowledge assessment with real-time interaction between assessor and examinee, both wearing a HoloLens and sharing the same stereoscopic 3D augmented reality model. Additionally, recommendations for future directions, including implementation, validation, logistic challenges, and cost-effectiveness, are provided. Continued collaboration between developers, researchers, teachers, and students is critical to advancing these processes.

Project description:BackgroundPrevious classification of renal pelvicalyceal anatomical structure may be difficult to intuitively understand and unpractical for endourological surgery. We aim to put forward a modified Takazawa anatomical classification of renal pelvicalyceal system based on three-dimensional (3D) virtual reconstruction models for endourological surgery.MethodsWe retrospectively collected data on 225 patients (320 kidneys) in total between Apr. 2017 and Dec. 2020, spatial anatomical structure of renal pelvis and calyces were modeled and corresponding morphological parameters were measured after 3D virtual reconstruction of computed tomography urography (CTU). The modified Takazawa renal pelvicalyceal anatomical classification was advanced based on the renal pelvicalyceal morphological parameters [bifurcated branches of renal pelvis, cross sectional area of renal pelvis and ureteropelvic junction (UPJ), infundibuloureteral angle (IUA), lower pole infundibular calyceal length (IL)] by 3D virtual reconstruction models, and comparison of renal pelvicalyceal system morphological parameters were performed to evaluate the differences in various classification types of renal pelvis and calyces.ResultsAnatomical structure of renal pelvis and calyces were divided into two main types (Type A and Type B) according to renal pelvic branch patterns. A single pelvis without bifurcated branch was regarded as Type A (62%) and subclassified into three subtypes: Type A1 (22%), Type A2 (27%) and Type A3 (13%), the slimline pelvis was classified as Type A1, the typical pelvis as Type A2 and the broad pelvis as Type A3. A divided pelvis with bifurcated branches was seen as Type B (38%) and subclassified into two subtypes: Type B1 (15%) with the wide and flat lower calyx branch, Type B2 (23%) with the narrow and steep lower calyx branch.ConclusionsPrevious studies have reported that the visualization and classification of renal pelvicalyceal anatomical structure by endocast, autopsy, ultrasonography and excretory urography, the modified Takazawa classification system based on 3D virtual reconstruction models enables to standardized different anatomical morphology of renal pelvicalyceal system and provide intuitive and concise information on anatomy, thus leading to the improvement in treatment modality.

Project description:The cell biology discipline constitutes a highly dynamic field whose concepts take a long time to be incorporated into the educational system, especially in developing countries. Amongst the main obstacles to the introduction of new cell biology concepts to students is their general lack of identification with most teaching methods. The introduction of elaborated figures, movies and animations to textbooks has given a tremendous contribution to the learning process and the search for novel teaching methods has been a central goal in cell biology education. Some specialized tools, however, are usually only available in advanced research centers or in institutions that are traditionally involved with the development of novel teaching/learning processes, and are far from becoming reality in the majority of life sciences schools. When combined with the known declining interest in science among young people, a critical scenario may result. This is especially important in the field of electron microscopy and associated techniques, methods that have greatly contributed to the current knowledge on the structure and function of different cell biology models but are rarely made accessible to most students. In this work, we propose a strategy to increase the engagement of students into the world of cell and structural biology by combining 3D electron microscopy techniques and 3D prototyping technology (3D printing) to generate 3D physical models that accurately and realistically reproduce a close-to-the native structure of the cell and serve as a tool for students and teachers outside the main centers. We introduce three strategies for 3D imaging, modeling and prototyping of cells and propose the establishment of a virtual platform where different digital models can be deposited by EM groups and subsequently downloaded and printed in different schools, universities, research centers and museums, thereby modernizing teaching of cell biology and increasing the accessibility to modern approaches in basic science.

Project description:ObjectivesAccess to the implant surface plays a significant role in effective mechanical biofilm removal in peri-implantitis treatment. Mechanical decontamination may also alter the surface topography of the implant, potentially increasing susceptibility to bacterial recolonization. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate a newly developed, anatomically realistic, and adaptable three-dimensional (3D)printed model with a peri-implant bone defect to evaluate the accessibility and changes of dental implant surfaces after mechanical decontamination treatment.Material and methodsA split model of an advanced peri-implant bone defect was prepared using 3D printing. The function of the model was tested by mechanical decontamination of the exposed surface of dental implants (Standard Implant Straumann AG) coated with a thin layer of colored occlusion spray. Two different instruments for mechanical decontamination were used. Following decontamination, the implants were removed from the split model and photographed. Image analysis and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to quantify the remaining occlusion spray both in terms of area and total amount, while scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry were used to analyze alteration in the implant surface morphology.ResultsThe 3D model allowed easy placement and removal of the dental implants without disturbing the implant surfaces. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of removal of the occlusion spray revealed differences in the mechanism of action and access to the implant surface between tested instruments. The model permitted surface topography analysis following the decontamination procedure.ConclusionThe developed 3D model allowed a realistic simulation of decontamination of implant surfaces with colored occlusion spray in an advanced peri-implant defect. 3D printing allows easy adaptation of the model in terms of the shape and location of the defect. The model presents a valuable tool for in vitro investigation of the accessibility and changes of the implant surface after mechanical and chemical decontamination.
