Triggering avalanches by transverse perturbations in a rotating drum.

ABSTRACT: We study the role of small-scale perturbations in the onset of avalanches in a rotating drum in the stick-slip regime. By vibrating the system along the axis of rotation with an amplitude orders of magnitude smaller than the particles' diameter, we found that the order parameter that properly describes the system is the kinetic energy. We also show that, for high enough frequencies, the onset of the avalanche is determined by the amplitude of the oscillation, contrary to previous studies that showed that either acceleration or velocity was the governing parameter. Finally, we present a theoretical model that explains the transition between the continuous and discrete avalanche regimes as a supercritical Hopf bifurcation.

Dataset of the temperature rise during granular flows in a rotating drum.

Project description:This paper provides experimental data on the temperature rise during granular flows in a small-scale rotating drum due to heat generation. All heat is believed to be generated by conversion of some mechanical energy, through mechanisms such as friction and collisions between particles and between particles and walls. Particles of different material types were used, while multiple rotation speeds were considered, and the drum was filled with different amounts of particles. The temperature of the granular materials inside the rotating drum was monitored using a thermal camera. The temperature increases at specific times of each experiment are presented in form of tables, along with the average and standard deviation of the repetitions of each setup configuration. The data can be used as a reference to set the operating conditions of rotating drums, in addition to calibrating numerical models and validating computer simulations.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations of Aerosol Behavior in a High Speed (Heubach) Rotating Drum Dustiness Tester.

Project description:Potential exposure from hazardous dusts may be assessed by evaluating the dustiness of the powders being handled. Dustiness is the tendency of a powder to aerosolize with a given input of energy. We have previously used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to numerically investigate the flow inside the European Standard (EN15051) Rotating Drum dustiness tester during its operation. The present work extends those CFD studies to the widely used Heubach Rotating Drum. Air flow characteristics are investigated within the Abe-Kondoh-Nagano k-epsilon turbulence model; the aerosol is incorporated via a Euler-Lagrangian multiphase approach. The air flow inside these drums consists of a well-defined axial jet penetrating relatively quiescent air. The spreading of the Heubach jet results in a fraction of the jet recirculating as back-flow along the drum walls; at high rotation rates, the axial jet becomes unstable. This flow behavior qualitatively differs from the stable EN15051 flow pattern. The aerodynamic instability promotes efficient mixing within the Heubach drum, resulting in higher particle capture efficiencies for particle sizes d < 80 μm.

Transverse barrier formation by electrical triggering of a metal-to-insulator transition.

Project description:Application of an electric stimulus to a material with a metal-insulator transition can trigger a large resistance change. Resistive switching from an insulating into a metallic phase, which typically occurs by the formation of a conducting filament parallel to the current flow, is a highly active research topic. Using the magneto-optical Kerr imaging, we found that the opposite type of resistive switching, from a metal into an insulator, occurs in a reciprocal characteristic spatial pattern: the formation of an insulating barrier perpendicular to the driving current. This barrier formation leads to an unusual N-type negative differential resistance in the current-voltage characteristics. We further demonstrate that electrically inducing a transverse barrier enables a unique approach to voltage-controlled magnetism. By triggering the metal-to-insulator resistive switching in a magnetic material, local on/off control of ferromagnetism is achieved using a global voltage bias applied to the whole device.

Rotating Motion of an Oil Droplet in a Circular Channel Subjected to a Transverse Alternating Electric Field.

Project description:The transient behavior of a silicone oil droplet passing through a circular channel in which castor oil passes as a surrounding fluid is investigated in both a periodically intermittent alternating electric field and a sinusoidal alternating electric field. When a periodically intermittent electric field with a low frequency and medium strength is applied, the droplet first undergoes ellipsoidal deformation where the major axis is oriented in the direction between the electric field direction and the direction normal to the electric field and electrorotation occurs. The inclined major axis tilts away from the electric field direction and then approaches it. For the case where a sinusoidal alternating electric field with medium strength is applied, electrorotation occurs when the frequency of the alternating sinusoidal electric field is low, whereas the droplet periodically deforms between a prolate and an oblate ellipsoid at certain frequencies. When the frequency of the electric field applied is high, the droplet remains spherical or undergoes deformation to a quasi-steady prolate ellipsoid with an aspect ratio of almost unity.

Project description:The paper presents experimental data on the effect of transverse vibrations on a heat-generating fluid in a rotating horizontal cylinder. To obtain the data, an original experimental device was designed and manufactured. The data of temperature measurements in the cavity depending on the angular velocity of rotation of the cavity, frequency and amplitude of vibrations are presented. To estimate the intensity and structure of convection, the velocity fields of fluid motion relative to the cavity in cross sections are shown. The paper is related to a research article "Convection of a heat-generating fluid in a rotating cylindrical cavity subject to transverse vibrations" Vjatkin et al, 2019.

Recurrent activity in neuronal avalanches.

Project description:A new statistical analysis of large neuronal avalanches observed in mouse and rat brain tissues reveals a substantial degree of recurrent activity and cyclic patterns of activation not seen in smaller avalanches. To explain these observations, we adapted a model of structural weakening in materials. In this model, dynamical weakening of neuron firing thresholds closely replicates experimental avalanche size distributions, firing number distributions, and patterns of cyclic activity. This agreement between model and data suggests that a mechanism like dynamical weakening plays a key role in recurrent activity found in large neuronal avalanches. We expect these results to illuminate the causes and dynamics of large avalanches, like those seen in seizures.

Temporal profiles of avalanches on networks.

Project description:An avalanche or cascade occurs when one event causes one or more subsequent events, which in turn may cause further events in a chain reaction. Avalanching dynamics are studied in many disciplines, with a recent focus on average avalanche shapes, i.e., the temporal profiles of avalanches of fixed duration. At the critical point of the dynamics, the rescaled average avalanche shapes for different durations collapse onto a single universal curve. We apply Markov branching process theory to derive an equation governing the average avalanche shape for cascade dynamics on networks. Analysis of the equation at criticality demonstrates that nonsymmetric average avalanche shapes (as observed in some experiments) occur for certain combinations of dynamics and network topology. We give examples using numerical simulations of models for information spreading, neural dynamics, and behavior adoption and we propose simple experimental tests to quantify whether cascading systems are in the critical state.

Understanding cytoskeletal avalanches using mechanical stability analysis.

Project description:Eukaryotic cells are mechanically supported by a polymer network called the cytoskeleton, which consumes chemical energy to dynamically remodel its structure. Recent experiments in vivo have revealed that this remodeling occasionally happens through anomalously large displacements, reminiscent of earthquakes or avalanches. These cytoskeletal avalanches might indicate that the cytoskeleton's structural response to a changing cellular environment is highly sensitive, and they are therefore of significant biological interest. However, the physics underlying "cytoquakes" is poorly understood. Here, we use agent-based simulations of cytoskeletal self-organization to study fluctuations in the network's mechanical energy. We robustly observe non-Gaussian statistics and asymmetrically large rates of energy release compared to accumulation in a minimal cytoskeletal model. The large events of energy release are found to correlate with large, collective displacements of the cytoskeletal filaments. We also find that the changes in the localization of tension and the projections of the network motion onto the vibrational normal modes are asymmetrically distributed for energy release and accumulation. These results imply an avalanche-like process of slow energy storage punctuated by fast, large events of energy release involving a collective network rearrangement. We further show that mechanical instability precedes cytoquake occurrence through a machine-learning model that dynamically forecasts cytoquakes using the vibrational spectrum as input. Our results provide a connection between the cytoquake phenomenon and the network's mechanical energy and can help guide future investigations of the cytoskeleton's structural susceptibility.

On the temporal organization of neuronal avalanches.

Project description:Spontaneous activity of cortex in vitro and in vivo has been shown to organize as neuronal avalanches. Avalanches are cascades of neuronal activity that exhibit a power law in their size and duration distribution, typical features of balanced systems in a critical state. Recently it has been shown that the distribution of quiet times between consecutive avalanches in rat cortex slice cultures displays a non-monotonic behavior with a power law decay at short time scales. This behavior has been attributed to the slow alternation between up and down-states. Here we further characterize the avalanche process and investigate how the functional behavior of the quiet time distribution depends on the fine structure of avalanche sequences. By systematically removing smaller avalanches from the experimental time series we show that size and quiet times are correlated and highlight that avalanche occurrence exhibits the characteristic periodicity of θ and β/γ oscillations, which jointly emerge in most of the analyzed samples. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that smaller avalanches tend to be associated with faster β/γ oscillations, whereas larger ones are associated with slower θ and 1-2 Hz oscillations. In particular, large avalanches corresponding to θ cycles trigger cascades of smaller ones, which occur at β/γ frequency. This temporal structure follows closely the one of nested θ - β/γ oscillations. Finally we demonstrate that, because of the multiple time scales characterizing avalanche dynamics, the distributions of quiet times between avalanches larger than a certain size do not collapse onto a unique function when rescaled by the average occurrence rate. However, when considered separately in the up-state and in the down-state, these distributions are solely controlled by the respective average rate and two different unique function can be identified.

Avalanches and criticality in self-organized nanoscale networks.

Project description:Current efforts to achieve neuromorphic computation are focused on highly organized architectures, such as integrated circuits and regular arrays of memristors, which lack the complex interconnectivity of the brain and so are unable to exhibit brain-like dynamics. New architectures are required, both to emulate the complexity of the brain and to achieve critical dynamics and consequent maximal computational performance. We show here that electrical signals from self-organized networks of nanoparticles exhibit brain-like spatiotemporal correlations and criticality when fabricated at a percolating phase transition. Specifically, the sizes and durations of avalanches of switching events are power law distributed, and the power law exponents satisfy rigorous criteria for criticality. These signals are therefore qualitatively and quantitatively similar to those measured in the cortex. Our self-organized networks provide a low-cost platform for computational approaches that rely on spatiotemporal correlations, such as reservoir computing, and are an important step toward creating neuromorphic device architectures.
