Comparing person and people perception: Multiple group members do not increase stereotype priming.

ABSTRACT: A characteristic feature of daily life is encountering people in groups. Surprisingly, however, at least during the initial stages of processing, research has focused almost exclusively on the construal of single individuals. As such, it remains unclear whether person and people (i.e., group) perception yield comparable or divergent outcomes. Addressing this issue, here we explored a core social-cognitive topic-stereotype activation-by presenting both single and multiple facial primes in a sequential-priming task. In addition, the processes underlying task performance were probed using a drift diffusion model analysis. Based on prior work, it was hypothesised that multiple (vs. single) primes would increase stereotype-based responding. Across two experiments, a consistent pattern of results emerged. First, stereotype priming was insensitive to the number of primes that were presented and occurred only at a short prime-target stimulus onset asynchrony (i.e., 250 ms). Second, priming was underpinned by a bias towards congruent (vs. incongruent) prime-target responses. Collectively these findings advance understanding of the emergence and origin of stereotype priming during person and people perception.

Project description:PurposeDevelopmental stuttering is a fluency disorder that may be caused by neurological, genetic, or familial factors. However, a general perception that stuttering is caused by psychological problems could lead to negative attitudes toward stuttering, causing prejudice or discrimination against people who stutter (PWS). Thus, our study aimed to investigate whether certain beliefs in etiology of stuttering are related to the negative perception of stuttering.MethodsA web-based survey of 413 native Japanese adults, aged 20-69, who did not suffer from stuttering, schizophrenia, or depression, was conducted in August 2021. The participants were recruited through the Web monitor panel. Participants were divided into three uniform groups based on their response to a 27-item questionnaire about their implicit belief regarding the etiology of stuttering: belief in the biological model (stuttering-biological group), belief in the psychological model (stuttering-psychological group), and the control group (those who responded to perception of healthy adult males). Participants were also asked to respond to 25 items of semantic differential scales about perception of stuttering or healthy adult males. Responses were summarized into several factors by factor analysis, and factor scores were compared among the three groups. The stuttering-biological group had the fewest participants, comprising 80 individuals. Overall, a total of 240 participants, 80 from each group, were included in the analysis.ResultsSome pairs of stereotypes included in semantic differential scales revealed differences between the groups; PWS, irrespective of the participants of the biological or psychological group, were considered as having negative stereotyping properties such as being "tense," "anxious," or "afraid." Additionally, three concepts from the factor analysis of these 25 items were analyzed using an analysis of variance, and significant differences were found; the mean factor score of the "danger" stereotype was lower in the stuttering-biological group compared to the stuttering-psychological group.ConclusionAlthough the simplification of the biological model is not recommended, anti-stigma campaigns to educate people that stuttering is caused by multidimensional factors, not just psychological ones, could change the general public's negative perceptions of stuttering.

Project description:ObjectivesPeople interact with their work environment through being, to a greater or lesser extent, compatible with aspects of their setting. This interaction between person and environment is particularly relevant in healthcare settings where compatibility affects not only the healthcare professionals, but also potentially the patient. One way to examine this association is to investigate person-organisation (P-O) fit and person-group (P-G) fit. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesise knowledge on both P-O fit and P-G fit in healthcare to determine their association with staff outcomes. It was hypothesised that there would be a positive relationship between fit and staff outcomes, such that the experience of compatibility and 'fitting in' would be associated with better staff outcomes.DesignA systematic review was conducted based on an extensive search strategy guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analyses to identify relevant literature.Data sourcesCINAHL Complete, EMBASE, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Scopus.Eligibility criteriaArticles were included if they were empirical studies, published in peer-reviewed journals in English language, set in a healthcare context and addressed the association that staff outcomes have with P-O and/or P-G fit.Data extraction and synthesisIncluded texts were examined for study characteristics, fit constructs examined and types of staff outcomes assessed. The Quality Assessment Tool was used to assess risk of bias.ResultsTwenty-eight articles were included in the review. Of these, 96.4% (27/28) reported a significant, positive association between perception of fit and staff outcomes in healthcare contexts, such that a sense of compatibility had various positive implications for staff, including job satisfaction and retention.ConclusionAlthough the results, as with all systematic reviews, are prone to bias and definitional ambiguity, they are still informative. Generally, the evidence suggests an association between employees' perceived compatibility with the workplace or organisation and a variety of staff outcomes in healthcare settings.

Project description:Priming is a learning process that refers to behavioral changes caused by previous exposure to a similar stimulus. Motor imagery (MI), which involves the mental rehearsal of action representations in working memory without engaging in actual execution, could be a strategy for priming the motor system. This study investigates whether MI primes action execution in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Here, 17 people with MS (PwMS) and 19 healthy subjects (HS), all right-handed and good imaginers, performed as accurately and quickly as possible, with a pencil, actual or mental pointing movements between targets of small (1.0 × 1.0 cm) or large (1.5 × 1.5 cm) size. In actual trials, they completed five pointing cycles between the left and right targets, whereas in mental trials, the first 4 cycles were imagined while the fifth was actually executed. The fifth cycle was introduced to assess the MI priming effect on actual execution. All conditions, presented randomly, were performed with both dominant (i.e., right) and non-dominant arms. Analysis of the duration of the first 4 cycles in both actual and mental trials confirmed previous findings, showing isochrony in HS with both arms and significantly faster mental than actual movements (anisochrony) in PwMS (p < 0.01) [time (s); HS right: actual: 4.23 ± 0.15, mental: 4.36 ± 0.16; left: actual: 4.32 ± 0.15, mental: 4.43 ± 0.18; PwMS right: actual: 5.85 ± 0.16, mental: 5.99 ± 0.21; left: actual: 6.68 ± 0.20, mental: 5.94 ± 0.23]; anisochrony in PwMS was present when the task was performed with the non-dominant arm. Of note, temporal analysis of the fifth actual cycle showed no differences between actual and mental trials for HS with both arms, whereas in PwMS the fifth actual cycle was significantly faster after the four actual cycles for the non-dominant arm (p < 0.05) [time (s); HS right: actual: 1.03 ± 0.04, mental: 1.03 ± 0.03; left: actual: 1.08 ± 0.04, mental: 1.05 ± 0.03; PwMS right: actual: 1.48 ± 0.04, mental: 1.48 ± 0.06; left: actual: 1.66 ± 0.05, mental: 1.48 ± 0.06]. These results seem to suggest that a few mental repetitions of an action might be sufficient to exert a priming effect on the actual execution of the same action in PwMS. This would indicate further investigation of the potential use of MI as a new motor-cognitive tool for MS neurorehabilitation.
