Elastic Properties of Taurine Single Crystals Studied by Brillouin Spectroscopy.

ABSTRACT: The inelastic interaction between the incident photons and acoustic phonons in the taurine single crystal was investigated by using Brillouin spectroscopy. Three acoustic phonons propagating along the crystallographic b-axis were investigated over a temperature range of -185 to 175 °C. The temperature dependences of the sound velocity, the acoustic absorption coefficient, and the elastic constants were determined for the first time. The elastic behaviors could be explained based on normal lattice anharmonicity. No evidence for the structural phase transition was observed, consistent with previous structural studies. The birefringence in the ac-plane indirectly estimated from the split longitudinal acoustic modes was consistent with one theoretical calculation by using the extrapolation of the measured dielectric functions in the infrared range.

Structural Phase Transitions and Thermal Degradation Process of MAPbCl3 Single Crystals Studied by Raman and Brillouin Scattering

Project description:Raman spectroscopy was applied to MAPbCl3 single crystals in a wide frequency range from 10 to 3500 cm−1 over a broad temperature range from −196 °C to 200 °C including both two structural phase transitions and a thermal degradation range. Low-frequency lattice modes of MAPbCl3 were revealed for the first time, which showed discontinuous anomalies along with the change in the number of Raman modes at the transition points of −114 °C and −110 °C. Several Raman modes related to the C–N stretching and MA rocking modes in addition to the lattice modes displayed temperature dependences similar to those of MAPbBr3 in both Raman shifts and half widths, indicating that the MA cation arrangement and H–halide bond interactions behave similarly in both systems during the phase transition. The substantial increase in the half widths of nearly all Raman modes especially suggests that the dynamic disorder caused by the free rotational motions of MA cations induces significant anharmonicity in the lattice and thus, reduces the phonon lifetimes. High-temperature Raman and Brillouin scattering measurements showed that the spectral features changed drastically at ~200 °C where the thermal decomposition of MAPbCl3 into PbCl2 began. This result exhibits that combined Raman and Brillouin spectroscopic techniques can be a useful tool in monitoring temperature-induced or temporal changes in lead-based halide perovskite materials.

Acoustic Anomalies and the Critical Slowing-Down Behavior of MAPbCl<sub>3</sub> Single Crystals Studied by Brillouin Light Scattering.

Project description:Inelastic light scattering spectra of organic-inorganic halide perovskite MAPbCl3 single crystals were investigated by using Brillouin spectroscopy. Sound velocities and acoustic absorption coefficients of longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes propagating along the cubic [100] direction were determined in a wide temperature range. The sound velocities exhibited softening upon cooling in the cubic phase, which was accompanied by the increasing acoustic damping. The obtained relaxation time showed a critical slowing-down behavior, revealing the order-disorder nature of the phase transition, which is consistent with the growth of strong central peaks upon cooling toward the phase transition point. The temperature dependences of the two elastic constants C11 and C44 were obtained in the cubic phase for the first time. The comparison of C11 and C44 with those of other halide perovskites showed that C11 of MAPbCl3 is larger and C44 is slightly smaller compared to the values of MAPbBr3 and MAPbI3. It suggests that MAPbCl3 has a more compact structure (smaller lattice constant) along with stronger binding forces, causing larger C11 and bulk modulus in this compound, and that the shear rigidity is exceedingly small similar to other halide perovskites. The reported elastic constants in this study may serve as a testbed for theoretical and calculational approaches for MAPbCl3.

Precursor Phenomena of Barium Titanate Single Crystals Grown Using a Solid-State Single Crystal Growth Method Studied with Inelastic Brillouin Light Scattering and Birefringence Measurements.

Project description:The nature of precursor phenomena in the paraelectric phase of ferroelectrics is one of the main questions to be resolved from a fundamental point of view. Barium titanate (BaTiO₃) is one of the most representative perovskite-structured ferroelectrics intensively studied until now. The pretransitional behavior of BaTiO₃ single crystal grown using a solid-state crystal growth (SSCG) method was investigated for the first time and compared to previous results. There is no melting process in the SSCG method, thus the crystal grown using a SSCG method have inherent higher levels of impurity and defect concentrations, which is a good candidate for investigating the effect of crystal quality on the precursor phenomena. The acoustic, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties, as well as birefringence, of the SSCG-grown BaTiO₃ were examined over a wide temperature range. Especially, the acoustic phonon behavior was investigated in terms of Brillouin spectroscopy, which is a complementary technique to Raman spectroscopy. The obtained precursor anomalies of the SSCG-grown BaTiO₃ in the cubic phase were similar to those of other single crystals, in particular, of high-quality single crystal grown by top-seeded solution growth method. These results clearly indicate that the observed precursor phenomena are common and intrinsic effect irrespective of the crystal quality.

Correlative Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy data acquired on single cells.

Project description:The distribution of chemical species and the mechanical modulation inside a single cell or tissue are of fundamental importance to characterize their physiological activity or their pathological conditions [1-4]. Here we analyse these properties by means of label free, non invasive, spectroscopic methods. In particular, we use a recently developed micro-spectrometer, which acquires simultaneously Raman and Brillouin spectra on the same point with subcellular resolution [5]. The techniques ability to analyse the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of single cells has been tested on NIH/3T3 murine fibroblast cells grown in adhesion on silicon substrates. Here we report the data acquired from fixed cells after their oncogenic transformation. Mechanical and chemical evolution is evident by direct inspection of raw data. Sharing our experimental records can be valuable for researchers interested in the analysis of single cells by Raman and Brillouin spectroscopy in order: i) to compare data acquired by different set-ups and ii) to correctly model the fitting functions.

Network Viscoelasticity from Brillouin Spectroscopy.

Project description:Even though the physical nature of shear and longitudinal moduli are different, empirical correlations between them have been reported in several biological systems. This correlation is of fundamental interest and immense practical value in biomedicine due to the importance of the shear modulus and the possibility to map the longitudinal modulus at high-resolution with all-optical spectroscopy. We investigate the origin of such a correlation in hydrogels. We hypothesize that both moduli are influenced in the same direction by underlying physicochemical properties, which leads to the observed material-dependent correlation. Matching theoretical models with experimental data, we quantify the scenarios in which the correlation holds. For polymerized hydrogels, a correlation was found across different hydrogels through a common dependence on the effective polymer volume fraction. For hydrogels swollen to equilibrium, the correlation is valid only within a given hydrogel system, as the moduli are found to have different scalings on the swelling ratio. The observed correlation allows one to extract one modulus from another in relevant scenarios.

Dispersive coherent Brillouin scattering spectroscopy.

Project description:Frequency- and time-domain Brillouin scattering spectroscopy are powerful tools to read out the mechanical properties of complex systems in material and life sciences. Indeed, coherent acoustic phonons in the time-domain method offer superior depth resolution and a stronger signal than incoherent acoustic phonons in the frequency-domain method. However, it requires scanning of delay time between laser pulses for pumping and probing coherent acoustic phonons. Here, we present Brillouin scattering spectroscopy that spans the time and frequency domains to allow the multichannel detection of Brillouin scattering light from coherent acoustic phonons. Our technique traces the time-evolve Brillouin oscillations at the instantaneous frequency of a chromatic-dispersed laser pulse. The spectroscopic heterodyning of Brillouin scattering light in the frequency domain allows a single-frame readout of gigahertz-frequency oscillations with a spectrometer. As a proof of concept, we imaged heterogeneous thin films and biological cells over a wide bandwidth with nanometer depth resolution.

Viscoelastic properties of biopolymer hydrogels determined by Brillouin spectroscopy: A probe of tissue micromechanics.

Project description:Many problems in mechanobiology urgently require characterization of the micromechanical properties of cells and tissues. Brillouin light scattering has been proposed as an emerging optical elastography technique to meet this need. However, the information contained in the Brillouin spectrum is still a matter of debate because of fundamental problems in understanding the role of water in biomechanics and in relating the Brillouin data to low-frequency macroscopic mechanical parameters. Here, we investigate this question using gelatin as a model system in which the macroscopic physical properties can be manipulated to mimic all the relevant biological states of matter, ranging from the liquid to the gel and the glassy phase. We demonstrate that Brillouin spectroscopy is able to reveal both the elastic and viscous properties of biopolymers that are central to the structure and function of biological tissues.

Side-Chain Control of Topochemical Polymer Single Crystals with Tunable Elastic Modulus.

Project description:Topochemical polymerizations hold the promise of producing high molecular weight and stereoregular single crystalline polymers by first aligning monomers before polymerization. However, monomer modifications often alter the crystal packing and result in non-reactive polymorphs. Here, we report a systematic study on the side chain functionalization of the bis(indandione) derivative system that can be polymerized under visible light. Precisely engineered side chains help organize the monomer crystals in a one-dimensional fashion to maintain the topochemical reactivity. By optimizing the side chain length and end group of monomers, the elastic modulus of the resulting polymer single crystals can also be greatly enhanced. Lastly, using ultrasonication, insoluble polymer single crystals can be processed into free-standing and robust polymer thin films. This work provides new insights on the molecular design of topochemical reactions and paves the way for future applications of this fascinating family of materials.

High-Resolution Cryogenic Spectroscopy of Single Molecules in Nanoprinted Crystals.

Project description:We perform laser spectroscopy at liquid helium temperatures (T = 2 K) to investigate single dibenzoterrylene (DBT) molecules doped in anthracene crystals of nanoscopic height fabricated by electrohydrodynamic dripping. Using high-resolution fluorescence excitation spectroscopy, we show that zero-phonon lines of single molecules in printed nanocrystals are nearly as narrow as the Fourier-limited transitions observed for the same guest-host system in the bulk. Moreover, the spectral instabilities are comparable to or less than one line width. By recording super-resolution images of DBT molecules and varying the polarization of the excitation beam, we determine the dimensions of the printed crystals and the orientation of the crystals' axes. Electrohydrodynamic printing of organic nano- and microcrystals is of interest for a series of applications, where controlled positioning of quantum emitters with narrow optical transitions is desirable.
