The quality of patient education materials is an important issue for health educators, clinicians, and community health workers. Project description:ObjectiveIn the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, teleneuropsychology utilization has increased. There is a need to characterize the first-hand experiences of individuals using teleneuropsychology, identify the common teleneuropsychology challenges, and devise practical strategies for mitigating/resolving these challenges.MethodSurvey data were collected from U.S. based neuropsychologists and other individuals (e.g., graduate students and research assistants) who were engaged in remote cognitive assessment with adults (n = 87). Frequency analyses were conducted to examine: how respondents used teleneuropsychology (e.g., duration of use, types of measures and devices/technology platforms used); challenges that were encountered with different technology platforms and teleneuropsychology use; and advice for navigating these challenges.ResultsMost respondents began using teleneuropsychology relatively recently in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, with home-to-home or clinic-to-home settings being the most frequently reported teleneuropsychology settings. Zoom®, Doxy.Me®, and MyChart® were the most frequently used platforms, largely due to workplace mandates and/or Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant features. Common challenges with teleneuropsychology included internet connection issues and environmental distractions in examinees' homes, and examinees having limited-to-no access to technologies requisite for teleneuropsychology. Providing clear instructions to the examinee prior to the teleneuropsychology visit was the most common advice for ensuring a successful teleneuropsychology evaluation. Similar response patterns were generally noted for those who used TeleNP for clinical or research purposes.ConclusionsThese survey results reflect common experiences and challenges with teleneuropsychology and identify priority targets for increasing its feasibility, reliability, and validity. Findings provide context for the development of formal teleneuropsychology competencies.

Project description:In recent decades, the volume of scholarly literature worldwide has increased significantly, and open-access publishing has become commonplace. These changes are even more dominant in South Korea. Comparing the periods of 1981-2000 and 2001-2020, the number of medical articles produced in Korea increased by 16.8 times on the Web of Science platform (13,223 to 222,771 papers). Before 1990, almost no open-access articles were produced in South Korea, but in the last 10 years open-access publications came to account for almost 40% of all South Korean publications on Web of Science. Along with the expansion of literature and the development of open-access publishing, predatory journals that seek profit without conducting quality assurance have appeared and undermined the academic corpus. In this rapidly changing environment, medical researchers have begun contemplating publication standards. In this article, recent trends in academic publishing are examined from international and South Korean perspectives, and the significance of open-access publishing and recent changes are discussed. Practical methods that can be used to select legitimate publishers, including open-access journals, and identify predatory journals are also discussed.

Project description:BackgroundWhile diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a common complication of diabetes, little is known about the content and readability of online patient education materials (PEM) for DFU. The recommended reading grade level for these materials is grades 6-8.ObjectiveThe aim of this paper was to evaluate the quality and readability of online PEM on DFU.MethodsA Google search was performed using 4 different search terms related to DFU. Two readability formulas were used to assess the readability of the included PEM. These included the Flesch-Kincaid grade level and the Flesch-Reading ease score. The DISCERN tool was used to determine quality and reliability.ResultsA total of 41 online PEM were included. The average Flesch-Reading ease score for all PEM was 63.43 (SD 14.21), indicating a standard difficulty level of reading. The average reading grade level was 7.85 (SD 2.38), which is higher than the recommended reading level for PEM. The mean DISCERN score was 45.66 (SD 3.34), and 27% (11/41) of the articles had DISCERN scores of less than 39, corresponding to poor or very poor quality.ConclusionsThe majority of online PEM on DFU are written above the recommended reading levels and have significant deficiencies in quality and reliability. Clinicians and patients should be aware of the shortcomings of these resources and consider the impact they may have on patients' self-management.

Project description:AimThis study identified and evaluated tested patient safety educational interventions. This study also described the content, curricular structures and teaching strategies of the educational interventions and determined the methods used for evaluating patient safety learning outcomes.DesignThe Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines directed this review.MethodsSearches for articles describing and evaluating patient safety educational interventions were conducted using four scholarly databases. Study quality was assessed using the McMaster Critical Review Form.ResultsSeven studies met the inclusion criteria. Educational interventions were either presented as stand-alone courses or as lessons embedded in an existing course. All studies employed a mixture of various teaching modalities and several evaluation methods and outcomes. Mixed results were observed in terms of the effects of educational interventions. Future researchers should continue to develop patient safety curricula and examine their effect on student competencies with stronger methodological rigour.

Project description:BackgroundNursing educators must be qualified to teach patient safety to nursing students to ensure patient safety in the clinical field. The purpose of this study was to assess nursing educators' competencies and educational needs for patient safety in hospitals and nursing schools.MethodA mixed-methods sequential explanatory design employed a survey and focus group interview with nursing educators (school clinical instructors and hospital nurse preceptors). Thirty-eight questionnaires filled out by clinical instructors from six four-year nursing universities and 106 questionnaires from nurse preceptors from three high-level general hospitals in the Seoul metropolitan area were analyzed to obtain quantitative data. Focus group interviews were conducted among six clinical instructors from one nursing school and four nurse preceptors from one high-level general hospital in Seoul.ResultsNursing educators had higher levels of attitude compared with relatively lower levels of skill and knowledge regarding patient safety. They reported educational needs of "medication" and "infection prevention" as being higher and "human factors" and "complexity of systems" as being lower. Nursing educators desired different types of education for patient safety.ConclusionIt is necessary to enhance nursing educators' patient safety skills and knowledge by developing and providing an integrated program of patient safety, with various teaching methods to meet their educational needs. The findings of this study provide the basic information needed to reform patient safety education programs appropriately to fit nursing educators' needs and their patient safety competencies in both clinical practice and academia. Furthermore, the findings have revealed the importance of effective communication between clinical and academic settings in making patient safety education seamless.

Project description:BackgroundA fundamental role of the clinician educator is to provide thoughtful assessments for resident development. A gap in the literature exists about whether the completion of assessments contributes to clinician educator burden.ObjectiveWe sought to understand the degree to which completing resident assessments contributes to clinician educator burden, the drivers behind such perception, and whether modifiable factors exist.MethodsIn October 2020, we conducted a cross-sectional study of adult hospital medicine clinician educators to explore burden associated with resident assessment. The authors developed a 10-item electronic survey (Likert type and sliding scale responses), asking about demographics, context, frequency and degree of burden, burdensome aspects of assessments, estimated time for assessments, and percentage of assessments turned in late or never. We conducted subgroup analyses for differences in responses based on sex and number of years practicing, and regression analyses for predictors of burden degree.ResultsFifty of 81 (62%) surveyed faculty responded. Two percent (1 of 50) reported no burden, while 42% (21 of 50) reported infrequent ("never," "rarely," "sometimes") and 56% (28 of 50) reported frequent ("often," "always") burden. Of those experiencing burden, 67% (33 of 49) reported slight or moderate, and 33% (16 of 49) reported significant or extreme burden. Potentially modifiable causes included assessment request boluses, lag time between resident service and assessment requests, and technology involved. Female clinician educators estimated submitting a higher percentage of late assessments than males (65% vs 41%, P=.02). Number of years practicing was inversely associated with assessment time (β=-0.28, P=.01).ConclusionsOur findings suggest that resident assessments are a source of burden among adult hospital medicine clinician educators and that several potentially modifiable factors may underlie this burden.

Project description:BackgroundThe internet has become an increasingly popular resource among sports medicine patients seeking injury-related information. Numerous organizations recommend that patient educational materials (PEMs) should not exceed sixth-grade reading level. Despite this, studies have consistently shown the reading grade level (RGL) of PEMs to be too demanding across a range of surgical specialties.PurposeTo determine the readability of online sports medicine PEMs.Study designCross-sectional study.MethodsThe readability of 363 articles pertaining to sports medicine from 5 leading North American websites was assessed using 8 readability formulas: Flesch-Kincaid Reading Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease Score, Raygor Estimate, Fry Readability Formula, Simple Measure of Gobbledygook, Coleman-Liau Index, FORCAST Readability Formula, and Gunning Fog Index. The mean RGL of each article was compared with the sixth- and eighth-grade reading level in the United States. The cumulative mean website RGL was also compared among individual websites.ResultsThe overall cumulative mean RGL was 12.2 (range, 7.0-17.7). No article (0%) was written at a sixth-grade reading level, and only 3 articles (0.8%) were written at or below the eighth-grade reading level. The overall cumulative mean RGL was significantly higher than the sixth-grade [95% CI for the difference, 6.0-6.5; P < .001] and eighth-grade (95% CI, 4.0-4.5; P < .001) reading levels. There was a significant difference among the cumulative mean RGLs of the 5 websites assessed.ConclusionSports medicine PEMs produced by leading North American specialty websites have readability scores that are above the recommended levels. Given the increasing preference of patients for online health care materials, the imperative role of health literacy in patient outcomes, and the growing body of online resources, significant work needs to be undertaken to improve the readability of these materials.

Project description:BackgroundProviding people with understandable and actionable health information can considerably promote healthy behaviors and outcomes. To this end, some valid and reliable scales assessing the patient-friendliness of health education materials, like the PEMAT-P (Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for printable materials), have been well developed in English-speaking countries. However, the English version of the PEMAT-P has not been translated and adapted into simplified Chinese and validated in mainland China.ObjectiveThis study sought to translate the PEMAT-P tool into a simplified Chinese (Mandarin) version (C-PEMAT-P, a Chinese version of the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for printable materials) and verify its validity and reliability for assessing the comprehensibility and actionability of health education resources written in simplified Chinese. As a result, the validated C-PEMAT-P could be used to guide health researchers and educators to design more comprehensible and actionable materials for more tailored and targeted health education and interventions.MethodsWe translated the PEMAT-P into simplified Chinese in the following three steps: (1) forward-translating the PEMAT-P into simplified Chinese, (2) back-translating the simplified Chinese version into English, and (3) testing translation equivalence linguistically and culturally by examining the original English version of the PEMAT-P and the back-translated English version of the tool. Any discrepancies between the original English tool and the back-translated English tool were resolved through a panel discussion among the research team of all authors to produce a revised forward-translated Chinese version (C-PEMAT-P). We then evaluated the clarity of construction and wording as well as the content relevance of the C-PEMAT-P using a 4-point ordinal scale to determine its content validity. After that, 2 native Chinese speakers (health educators) used the C-PEMAT-P to rate 15 health education handouts concerning air pollution and health to validate their reliability. We calculated the Cohen coefficient and Cronbach α to determine the interrater agreement and internal consistency of the C-PEMAT-P, respectively.ResultsWe finalized the translated Chinese tool after discussing the differences between the 2 English versions (original and back-translated) of the PEMAT-P, producing the final Chinese version of the PEMAT-P (C-PEMAT-P). The content validity index of the C-PEMAT-P version was 0.969, the Cohen coefficient for the interrater scoring agreement was 0.928, and the Cronbach α for internal consistency was .897. These values indicated the high validity and reliability of the C-PEMAT-P.ConclusionsThe C-PEMAT-P has been proven valid and reliable. It is the first Chinese scale for assessing the comprehensibility and actionability of Chinese health education materials. It can be used as an assessment tool to evaluate health education materials currently available and a guide to help health researchers and educators design more comprehensible and actionable materials for more tailored and targeted health education and interventions.

Project description:BackgroundDue to the recent spread of coronavirus disease 2019, Korean nursing colleges are increasingly using virtual patient simulation to make up for a lack of available clinical practice in medical institutions. Therefore, an instrument is required to evaluate the effects of the virtual patient learning system in South Korea.ObjectiveTo assess the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Virtual Patient Learning System Evaluation Tool (K-VPLSET).DesignThis is a methodological study.SettingsThis study was conducted via an online survey for Korean nursing students.ParticipantsThe present study included 373 participants who were 3rd and 4th year Korean nursing students.MethodsAfter translating the English version of VPLSET into Korean, a pilot test with a cognitive interview was undertaken to ensure that the meaning of original instrument and appropriateness for Korean nursing students had been retained. The content validity of the K-VPLSET was examined by a panel of six experts. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 3rd and 4th year Korean nursing students, among whom 170 were recruited for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and 203 for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). SPSS version 26.0 was used for EFA, whereas AMOS version 22.0 was used for CFA.ResultsFrom the 32 initial items, the final version of the K-VPLSET ultimately included 20 items, with a Cronbach's α of 0.89. EFA identified four factors ("Nursing Knowledge Improvement," "Clinical Competency Development," "Confidence in Nursing Performance," and "Nursing Care Plan Application") that explained 56.9% of the total variance. CFA confirmed the validity of the instrument.ConclusionsOur findings confirmed that the K-VPLSET is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing the effects of the virtual patient learning system, through which the quality of e-learning for Korea nursing students can be determined.

Project description:This paper reports evidence that an individual meeting with a study counselor at high school significantly improves the quality of choice of tertiary educational field, as self-assessed 18 months after graduation from college. To address endogeneity, we explore the variation in study counseling practices between schools as an instrumental variable (IV). Following careful scrutiny of the validity of the IV, our results indicate a significant and positive influence of study counseling on the quality of educational choice, foremost among males and those with low educated parents. The overall result is stable across a number of robustness checks.
