A smart floor with 16 embedded pressure sensors was used to record 420 simulated fall events performed by 60 volunteers. Each participant performed seven fall events selected from the guidelines defined in a previous study. Raw data were grouped and well organized in CSV format. The data was collected for the development of a non-intrusive fall detection solution based on the smart floor. Project description:With the rapid development in sensing technology, data mining, and machine learning fields for human health monitoring, it became possible to enable monitoring of personal motion and vital signs in a manner that minimizes the disruption of an individual's daily routine and assist individuals with difficulties to live independently at home. A primary difficulty that researchers confront is acquiring an adequate amount of labeled data for model training and validation purposes. Therefore, activity discovery handles the problem that activity labels are not available using approaches based on sequence mining and clustering. In this paper, we introduce an unsupervised method for discovering activities from a network of motion detectors in a smart home setting. First, we present an intra-day clustering algorithm to find frequent sequential patterns within a day. As a second step, we present an inter-day clustering algorithm to find the common frequent patterns between days. Furthermore, we refine the patterns to have more compressed and defined cluster characterizations. Finally, we track the occurrences of various regular routines to monitor the functional health in an individual's patterns and lifestyle. We evaluate our methods on two public data sets captured in real-life settings from two apartments during seven-month and three-month periods.

Project description:In this data article, a robust data exploration is performed on daily Internet data traffic generated in a smart university campus for a period of twelve consecutive (12) months (January-December, 2017). For each day of the one-year study period, Internet data download traffic and Internet data upload traffic at Covenant University, Nigeria were monitored and properly logged using required application software namely: FreeRADIUS; Radius Manager Web application; and Mikrotik Hotspot Manager. A comprehensive dataset with detailed information is provided as supplementary material to this data article for easy research utility and validation. For each month, descriptive statistics of daily Internet data download traffic and daily Internet data upload traffic are presented in tables. Boxplot representations and time series plots are provided to show the trends of data download and upload traffic volume within the smart campus throughout the 12-month period. Frequency distributions of the dataset are illustrated using histograms. In addition, correlation and regression analyses are performed and the results are presented using a scatter plot. Probability Density Functions (PDFs) and Cumulative Distribution Functions (CDFs) of the dataset are also computed. Furthermore, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and multiple post-hoc tests are conducted to understand the statistical difference(s) in the Internet traffic volume, if any, across the 12-month period. The robust data exploration provided in this data article will help Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and network administrators in smart campuses to develop empirical model for optimal Quality of Service (QoS), Internet traffic forecasting, and budgeting.

Project description:BackgroundWearable activity trackers are regarded as a new opportunity to deliver health promotion interventions. Indeed, while the prediction of active behaviors is currently primarily relying on the processing of accelerometer sensor data, the emergence of smart clothes with multi-sensing capacities is offering new possibilities. Algorithms able to process data from a variety of smart devices and classify daily life activities could therefore be of particular importance to achieve a more accurate evaluation of physical behaviors. This study aims to (1) develop an activity recognition algorithm based on the processing of plantar pressure information provided by a smart-shoe prototype and (2) to determine the optimal hardware and software configurations.MethodSeventeen subjects wore a pair of smart-shoe prototypes composed of plantar pressure measurement insoles, and they performed the following nine activities: sitting, standing, walking on a flat surface, walking upstairs, walking downstairs, walking up a slope, running, cycling, and completing office work. The insole featured seven pressure sensors. For each activity, at least four minutes of plantar pressure data were collected. The plantar pressure data were cut in overlapping windows of different lengths and 167 features were extracted for each window. Data were split into training and test samples using a subject-wise assignment method. A random forest model was trained to recognize activity. The resulting activity recognition algorithms were evaluated on the test sample. A multi hold-out procedure allowed repeating the operation with 5 different assignments. The analytic conditions were modulated to test (1) different window lengths (1-60 seconds), (2) some selected sensor configurations and (3) different numbers of data features.ResultsA window length of 20 s was found to be optimum and therefore used for the rest of the analysis. Using all the sensors and all 167 features, the smart shoes predicted the activities with an average success of 89%. "Running" demonstrated the highest sensitivity (100%). "Walking up a slope" was linked with the lowest performance (63%), with the majority of the false negatives being "walking on a flat surface" and "walking upstairs." Some 2- and 3-sensor configurations were linked with an average success rate of 87%. Reducing the number of features down to 20 does not alter significantly the performance of the algorithm.ConclusionHigh-performance human behavior recognition using plantar pressure data only is possible. In the future, smart-shoe devices could contribute to the evaluation of daily physical activities. Minimalist configurations integrating only a small number of sensors and computing a reduced number of selected features could maintain a satisfying performance. Future experiments must include a more heterogeneous population.

Project description:As aging populations continue to grow, primarily in developed countries, there are increasing demands for the system that monitors the activities of elderly people while continuing to allow them to pursue their individual, healthy, and independent lifestyles. Therefore, it is required to develop the activity of daily living (ADL) sensing systems that are based on high-performance sensors and information technologies. However, most of the systems that have been proposed to date have only been investigated and/or evaluated in experimental environments. When considering the spread of such systems to typical homes inhabited by elderly people, it is clear that such sensing systems will need to meet the following five requirements: (1) be inexpensive; (2) provide robustness; (3) protect privacy; (4) be maintenance-free; and, (5) work with a simple user interface. In this paper, we propose a novel senior-friendly ADL sensing system that can fulfill these requirements. More specifically, we achieve an easy collection of ADL data from elderly people while using a proposed system that consists of a small number of inexpensive energy harvesting sensors and simple annotation buttons, without the need for privacy-invasive cameras or microphones. In order to evaluate the practicality of our proposed system, we installed it in ten typical homes with elderly residents and collected the ADL data over a two-month period. We then visualized the collected data and performed activity recognition using a long short-term memory (LSTM) model. From the collected results, we confirmed that our proposed system, which is inexpensive and non-invasive, can correctly collect resident ADL data and could recognize activities from the collected data with a high recall rate of 72.3% on average. This result shows a high potential of our proposed system for application to services for elderly people.

Project description:Toward smart building and smart home, floor as one of our most frequently interactive interfaces can be implemented with embedded sensors to extract abundant sensory information without the video-taken concerns. Yet the previously developed floor sensors are normally of small scale, high implementation cost, large power consumption, and complicated device configuration. Here we show a smart floor monitoring system through the integration of self-powered triboelectric floor mats and deep learning-based data analytics. The floor mats are fabricated with unique "identity" electrode patterns using a low-cost and highly scalable screen printing technique, enabling a parallel connection to reduce the system complexity and the deep-learning computational cost. The stepping position, activity status, and identity information can be determined according to the instant sensory data analytics. This developed smart floor technology can establish the foundation using floor as the functional interface for diverse applications in smart building/home, e.g., intelligent automation, healthcare, and security.

Project description:The dataset presented in this paper presents a dataset related to three motionless activities, including driving, watching TV, and sleeping. During these activities, the mobile device may be positioned in different locations, including the pants pockets, in a wristband, over the bedside table, on a table, inside the car, or on other furniture, for the acquisition of accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, GPS, and microphone data. The data was collected by 25 individuals (15 men and 10 women) in different environments in Covilhã and Fundão municipalities (Portugal). The dataset includes the sensors' captures related to a minimum of 2000 captures for each motionless activity, which corresponds to 2.8 h (approximately) for each one. This dataset includes 8.4 h (approximately) of captures for further analysis with data processing techniques, and machine learning methods. It will be useful for the complementary creation of a robust method for the identification of these type of activities.

Project description:In this data article, we will present the data coming from 3D Inertial Measurement Unit (3-accelerometers and 3-gyroscopes sensors) mounted on the motorcycle collected during a motorcycle's falls experiments. Developing a motorcycle's fall events detection algorithms is a very challenging task because the motorcycle falling is multi-factorial and is strongly influenced by many unknown factors. To solve this issue, one solution can be to use a data-set collected during controlled experiments, knowing that the real motorcycle falls cannot be replicated, a stuntman can be chosen to be as close to reality as possible. The experiments have been conducted based on predefined scenarios such as: fall in a curve, fall on a slippery straight road section, fall with leaning of the motorcycle ''intentional manoeuvre'' and fall in a roundabout. These scenarios have been designed based on realistic falls. Other experiments have been conducted under different extreme driving situations. These extreme manoeuvres were carried out on track by professional riders. The purpose of performing these manoeuvres was to obtain a dataset describing the limit handling behaviour.

Project description:Slow slip transients on faults can last from seconds to months and stitch together the earthquake cycle. However, no single geophysical instrument is able to observe the full range of slow slip because of bandwidth limitations. Here, we connect seismic and geodetic data from the Mexican subduction zone to explore an instrumental blind spot. We establish a calibration of the daily median amplitude of the seismically recorded low-frequency earthquakes to the daily geodetically recorded moment rate of previously established slow slip events. This calibration allows us to use the precise evolution of low-frequency earthquake activity to quantitatively measure the moment of smaller, subdaily slip events that are unresolvable by geodesy alone. The resulting inferred slow slip moments scale with duration and inter-event time like ordinary earthquakes. These new quantifications help connect slow and fast events in a broad spectrum of transient slip and suggest that slow slip events behave much like ordinary earthquakes.

Project description:This paper presents a grasping database collected from multiple human subjects for activities of daily living in unstructured environments. The main strength of this database is the use of three different sensing modalities: color images from a head-mounted action camera, distance data from a depth sensor on the dominant arm and upper body kinematic data acquired from an inertial motion capture suit. 3826 grasps were identified in the data collected during 9-hours of experiments. The grasps were grouped according to a hierarchical taxonomy into 35 different grasp types. The database contains information related to each grasp and associated sensor data acquired from the three sensor modalities. We also provide our data annotation software written in Matlab as an open-source tool. The size of the database is 172 GB. We believe this database can be used as a stepping stone to develop big data and machine learning techniques for grasping and manipulation with potential applications in rehabilitation robotics and intelligent automation.

Project description:Data-driven methods are becoming an essential part of computational mechanics due to their advantages over traditional material modeling. Deep neural networks are able to learn complex material response without the constraints of closed-form models. However, data-driven approaches do not a priori satisfy physics-based mathematical requirements such as polyconvexity, a condition needed for the existence of minimizers for boundary value problems in elasticity. In this study, we use a recent class of neural networks, neural ordinary differential equations (N-ODEs), to develop data-driven material models that automatically satisfy polyconvexity of the strain energy. We take advantage of the properties of ordinary differential equations to create monotonic functions that approximate the derivatives of the strain energy with respect to deformation invariants. The monotonicity of the derivatives guarantees the convexity of the energy. The N-ODE material model is able to capture synthetic data generated from closed-form material models, and it outperforms conventional models when tested against experimental data on skin, a highly nonlinear and anisotropic material. We also showcase the use of the N-ODE material model in finite element simulations of reconstructive surgery. The framework is general and can be used to model a large class of materials, especially biological soft tissues. We therefore expect our methodology to further enable data-driven methods in computational mechanics.
