Gold Leaching from an Oxide Ore Using Thiocyanate as a Lixiviant: Process Optimization and Kinetics.

ABSTRACT: Thiocyanate (SCN^-) is a promising alternative to cyanide as a lixiviant for gold extraction and is 1000 times less toxic than cyanide. In this study, the following leaching parameters were tested to optimize the gold recovery for the first time from an oxide ore using the response surface methodology: initial thiocyanate concentration (10-500 mM), initial Fe³⁺ concentration (10-500 mM), and pulp density (10-50% w/v). The maximum gold recovery (96%) was achieved with 500 mM thiocyanate, 100 mM Fe³⁺, and 50% pulp density at 25 °C and pH = 2 for 24 h. A kinetic study on the optimum leaching condition showed that it followed the shrinking core model, in which the rate-controlling mechanism was the diffusion process. These results are discussed in the context of the published literature.

Pore Evolution in Refractory Gold Ore Formed by Oxidation Roasting and the Effect on the Cyanide Leaching Process.

Project description:Refractory gold ore is usually affected by the associated carbonaceous matter through the preg-robbing effect, which is eliminated by oxidation roasting, followed by leaching, to achieve a satisfactory gold leaching efficiency. Roasting-leaching experiments, pore structure measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction are used to explore the structural evolution of pores on the surface and its effect on the leaching performance. Pores with optimal sizes were obtained by roasting at 650 °C for 2.0 h with a ventilation of 0.6 m3/h; approximately 92.55% gold could be recovered under these conditions. A porous structure observed by SEM became more compact as the temperature further increased to 850 °C. The formation of CaSiO3 and CaSO4 in pores led to pore shrinkage. The mechanism of oxidation roasting, followed by cyanide leaching, was schematically analyzed and revealed the effects of pore structural evolution and phase transformation on the leaching efficiency.

Establishing a green biodesulfurization process for iron ore concentrates in stirred tank and leaching column bioreactors using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans.

Project description:The presence of sulfur impurities in complex iron ores represents a significant challenge for the iron mining and steel-making industries as their removal often necessitates the use of hazardous chemicals and energy-intensive processes. Here, we examined the microbial and mineralogical composition of both primary and secondary iron concentrates, identifying the presence of Sulfobacillus spp. and Leptospirillum spp., while sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were absent. We also observed that these concentrates displayed up to 85% exposed pyrrhotite. These observations led us to explore the capacity of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans to remove pyrrhotite-sulfur impurities from iron concentrates. Employing stirred tank bioreactors operating at 30°C and inoculated with 5·106 (At. thiooxidans cells mL-1), we achieved 45.6% sulfur removal over 16 days. Then, we evaluated packed leaching columns operated at 30°C, where the At. thiooxidans enriched system reached 43.5% desulfurization over 60 days. Remarkably, sulfur removal increased to 80% within 21 days under potassium limitation. We then compared the At. thiooxidans-mediated desulfurization process, with and without air supply, under potassium limitation, varying the initial biomass concentration in 1-m columns. Aerated systems facilitated approximately 70% sulfur removal across the entire column with minimal iron loss. In contrast, non-aerated leaching columns achieved desulfurization levels of only 6% and 26% in the lower and middle sections of the column, respectively. Collectively, we have developed an efficient, scalable biological sulfur-removal technology for processing complex iron ores, aligning with the burgeoning demand for sustainable practices in the mining industry.

Optimization of alumina leaching from microcline using particle swarm optimization and response surface methodology.

Project description:Alumina has found wide application in technological and engineering fields. However, due to the environmental effects of the traditional Bayer process of production, there is a need for a more eco-friendly and cost-effective procedure. The optimization of alumina extraction from microcline in nitric acid (HNO3) solution is considered in this work. The optimization exercise was performed with the optimization tools of response surface methodology (RSM) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The optimum conditions predicted by RSM include 82.11 oC reaction temperature, 3.53 M HNO3 concentration, 0.023 g/mL solid/liquid (S/L) ratio, 356.14 rpm stirring speed, and 99.92 min reaction time. At these conditions, about 83.21% alumina leaching rate was predicted. PSO however predicted optimum conditions of 90oC, 4 M, 0.021 g/mL, 420 rpm, and 118 min, respectively, for the parameters above. Hence, the two techniques were viable tools for the optimization exercise.

Enhanced Kinetic Removal of Ciprofloxacin onto Metal-Organic Frameworks by Sonication, Process Optimization and Metal Leaching Study.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are currently recognized as unique platforms for environmental studies. This study evaluated the potential of nine MOFs from ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and UIO-66 families for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP), a toxic, bio-accumulative, and persistent fluoroquinolone antibiotic. ZIF-67-SO4, with a rhombic crystalline morphology and 1375 m2/g BET surface area, has the highest CIP adsorption efficiency among the studied MOFs. The mathematical sorption model predicted that the highest CIP removal (99.2%) occurs when adsorbent dose, pH, and agitation time are adjusted to 6.82, 832.4 mg/L, and 39.95 min, respectively. Further studies revealed that the CIP adsorbed onto ZIF-67-SO4 in monolayer (qmax: 2537.5 mg/g) and chemisorption controlled the rate of the process. Mass transfer kinetic coefficients improved significantly by sonication at 35 KHz in comparison with mechanical agitation. Thermodynamic parameters (minus signs of ∆G° [7.8 to 14.2], positive signs of ∆H° (58.9 KJ/mol), and ∆S° (0.23 KJ/mol·K)) demonstrated the spontaneous, endothermic, and chemical sorption of CIP. The level of cobalt leached from ZIF-67-SO4 structure varied 1.2-4.5 mg/L, depending on pH, mixing time, and agitation type. In conclusion, the excellent adsorption properties of ZIF-67-SO4 for CIP, made it an outstanding candidate for environmental protection purposes.

Kinetics and process optimization studies for the effective removal of cresyl fast violet dye using reusable nanosized mullite.

Project description:The swift rise of hazardous dye effluent from diverse sectors continues to be a severe public health problem and a top priority for environmental preservation, presenting a significant obstacle to the current conventional water treatment systems. This study aims to develop an efficient and reusable approach for removing cresyl fast violet dye using mullite nanoparticles. Some factors such as pH, nano-mullite dosage, agitation speed, time, and others that affect the removal process were studied. The mullite nanoparticles' shape, particle size, pore diameters, and crystal phase structure are characterized using many techniques such as Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Contact angle, Zeta potential, scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The optimal conditions were pH 7 and 600 rpm for 30 min at room temperature. Using statistical programs such as ANOVA and Design Expert, the dye removal parameters were modeled and optimized, where the removal percentage was about 99%. In addition, the experimental elimination process exceeded 90% after just 10 min. Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Kaganer-Raduskevich (DKR), and Temkin isotherm equations were examined to find the adsorption isotherm. The experimental data fits the pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich isotherm. Thermodynamic investigations confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The nano-mullite was employed for the removal process, and its recycling ability supports its economic benefits. It was found that the high percentage of elimination remained consistent for more than 3 cycles.

Process optimization and production kinetics for cellulase production by Trichoderma viride VKF3.

Project description:Microbial cellulases are the enzymes widely studied due to their enormous applications in biochemical industry. Among 12 fungal isolates isolated from mangrove plant debris and soil sample collected from Valanthakad Mangroves, Kerala, India, 3 of them were found to exhibit cellulolytic activity. Among them, the most potent isolate which exhibited maximum cellulolytic activity was identified as Trichoderma viride VKF3 [Gene bank accession number- JX683684.1] based on colony morphology, microscopic observation and molecular centeracterization using D1/D2 region amplification. The isolate T. viride VKF3 was found to be non-phytopathogenic against the selected plants. Neighbour joining tree depicted its least divergence rate from the root taxon HM466686.1. T. viride VKF3 was grown under dynamic carbon, nitrogen sources, pH and temperature of the medium to draw out the optimum conditions for cellulase production. Protein stability kinetics and biomass production was also studied upto 11(th) day of incubation. It was evident from the study, that dextrose and beef extract could be used as major carbon and nitrogen sources in submerged fermentation at pH 9.0 and incubation temperature of 25°C to get maximum CMCase yield. Optimum enzyme recovery period was identified between 5(th) to 9(th) days of incubation beyond which the enzyme activity was reduced. By comparing two fermentation methods, submerged fermentation was found to be the best for maximum enzyme production. But utilization of substrates like sugarcane bagasse and cassava starch waste in the SSF offers a better scope in biodegradation of solid waste contributing to solid waste management.

Leaching of Metals and Metalloids from Hydrothermal Ore Particulates and Their Effects on Marine Phytoplankton.

Project description:Seafloor massive sulfide deposits have attracted much interest as mineral resources. Therefore, the potential environmental impacts of full-scale mining should be considered. In this study, we focused on metal and metalloid contamination that could be triggered by accidental leakage and dispersion of hydrothermal ore particulates from mining vessels into surface seawater. We determined the leaching potential of metals and metalloids from four hydrothermal ores collected from the Okinawa Trough into aerobic seawater and then evaluated the toxic effects of ore leachates on a phytoplankton species, Skeletonema marinoi-dohrnii complex, which is present ubiquitously in the ocean. Large amounts of metals and metalloids were released from the ground hydrothermal ores into seawater within 5 min under aerobic conditions. The main components of leachates were Zn + Pb, As + Sb, and Zn + Cu, which were obtained from the Fe-Zn-Pb-rich and Zn-Pb-rich zero-age, Ba-rich, and Fe-rich ores, respectively. The leachates had different chemical compositions from those of the ore. The rapid release and difference in chemical compositions between the leachates and the ores indicated that substances were not directly dissolved from the sulfide-binding mineral phase but from labile phases mainly on the adsorption-desorption interface of the ores under these conditions. All ore leachates inhibited the growth of S. marinoi-dohrnii complex but with different magnitudes of toxic effects. These results indicate that the fine particulate matter of hydrothermal ores is a potential source of toxic contamination that may damage primary production in the ocean. Therefore, we insist on the necessity for the prior evaluation of toxic element leachability from mineral ores into seawater to minimize mining impacts on the surface environment.

Mathematical modeling of metal recovery from E-waste using a dark-fermentation-leaching process.

Project description:In this work, an original mathematical model for metals leaching from electronic waste in a dark fermentation process is proposed. The kinetic model consists of a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations, accounting for the main biological, chemical, and physical processes occurring in the fermentation of soluble biodegradable substrates and in the dissolution process of metals. Ad-hoc experimental activities were carried out for model calibration purposes, and all experimental data were derived from specific lab-scale tests. The calibration was achieved by varying kinetic and stoichiometric parameters to match the simulation results to experimental data. Cumulative hydrogen production, glucose, organic acids, and leached metal concentrations were obtained from analytical procedures and used for the calibration. The results confirmed the high accuracy of the model in describing biohydrogen production, organic acids accumulation, and metals leaching during the biological degradation process. Thus, the mathematical model represents a useful and reliable tool for the design of strategies for valuable metals recovery from waste or mineral materials. Moreover, further numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the interactions between the fermentation and the leaching processes and to maximize the efficiency of metals recovery due to the fermentation by-products.

A halogen-free synthesis of gold nanoparticles using gold(III) oxide.

Project description:Gold nanoparticles are one of the most used nanomaterials. They are usually synthesized by the reduction of gold(III) chloride. However, the presence of halide ions in the reaction mixture is not always welcome. In some cases, these ions have detrimental influence on the morphology and structure of resulting nanoparticles. Here, we present a simple and halogen-free procedure to prepare gold nanoparticles by reduction of gold(III) oxide in neat oleylamine. The method provides the particles with an average size below 10 nm and dispersity of tens of percent. The process of nanoparticle formation was monitored using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The structure and chemical composition of the nanoparticles was determined by SEM, XPS and EDX. We also proposed the mechanism of reduction of gold(III) oxide based on MS, IR and NMR data. Importantly, the synthetic protocol is general and applicable for the preparation of other coinage metal nanoparticles from the corresponding metal oxides. For instance, we demonstrated that the absence of halogen enables efficient alloying of metals when preparing gold-silver bimetallic nanoparticles.
