Lake Superior Has Lost over 90% of Its Pesticide HCH Load since 1986.

ABSTRACT: The time trend of α- and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers in Lake Superior water was followed from 1986 to 2016, the longest record for any persistent organic pollutant (POP) in Great Lakes water. Dissipation of α-HCH and γ-HCHs was first order, with halving times (t_1/2) of 5.7 and 8.5 y, respectively. Loss rates were not significantly different starting a decade later (1996-2016). Concentrations of β-HCH were followed from 1996-2016 and dissipated more slowly (t_1/2 = 16 y). In 1986, the lake contained an estimated 98.8 tonnes of α-HCH and 13.2 tonnes of γ-HCH; by 2016, only 2.7% and 7.9% of 1986 quantities remained. Halving times of both isomers in water were longer than those reported in air, and for γ-HCH, they were longer in water than those reported in lake trout. Microbial degradation was evident by enantioselective depletion of (+)α-HCH, which increased from 1996 to 2011. Volatilization was the main removal process for both isomers, followed by degradation (hydrolytic and microbial) and outflow through the St. Mary's River. Sedimentation was minor. Major uncertainties in quantifying removal processes were in the two-film model for predicting volatilization and in microbial degradation rates. The study highlights the value of long-term monitoring of chemicals in water to interpreting removal processes and trends in biota.

Project description:BackgroundFluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) and amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) are common leafy vegetables produced and consumed in southwestern Nigeria. These vegetables attract insect pests which are controlled by pesticides that may have adverse impacts on human health.ObjectivesTo determine the levels of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) pesticide residues in the two vegetables and evaluate the potential health risks associated with their consumption.MethodsThe pesticide residue levels were quantitatively and qualitatively determined using a gas chromatograph coupled with electron capture detector. Health risk assessment were performed using estimated average daily intake and hazard indices for two weight categories: children (16.7 kg) and adults (60 kg).ResultsThe results showed that delta-HCH, DDT and methoxychlor were predominantly detected in the two vegetables from both farms and markets. In amaranth, the mean concentration of methoxychlor, DDT and delta-HCH were 4.590 ± 2.774 mg/kg (dry weight (dw)), 0.757 ± 0.457 mg/kg (dw) and 0.577 ± 0.390 mg/kg (dw), respectively, while fluted pumpkin levels were 6.223 ± 2.489 mg/kg dw (methoxychlor), 0.504 ± 0.056 mg/kg dw (delta-HCH) and 0.486 ± 0.123 mg/kg dw (DDT). The levels of HCH and DDT residues were generally above the United Kingdom/European Commission maximum residue limit. The analysis of health risk estimates for non-carcinogenic risk revealed that for both vegetables, the hazard quotient for p, p' DDT and methoxychlor was >1 for both children and adults. The health risk estimates for carcinogenic risk revealed that hazard indices values were >1 for children for both vegetables and alpha-HCH had a hazard index >1 for adults for amaranth. This means the residue exceeds acceptable standard and present potential risk to consumers of these vegetables.ConclusionsThe results obtained from the present study indicate that consumption of amaranth contaminated with alpha-HCH could pose a carcinogenic risk for adult consumers. The consumption of the two vegetables could pose both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to children and adults. Project description:Distribution of pesticide residues in the environment and their transport to surface water bodies is one of the most important environmental challenges. Fate of pesticides in the complex environments, especially in aquatic phases such as lakes and rivers, is governed by the main properties of the contaminants and the environmental properties. In this study, a multimedia mass modeling approach using the Quantitative Water Air Sediment Interaction (QWASI) model was applied to explore the fate of organochlorine pesticide residues of methoxychlor, ?-HCH and endosulfan-sulfate in the lake Naivasha (Kenya). The required physicochemical data of the pesticides such as molar mass, vapor pressure, air-water partitioning coefficient (KAW), solubility, and the Henry's law constant were provided as the inputs of the model. The environment data also were collected using field measurements and taken from the literature. The sensitivity analysis of the model was applied using One At a Time (OAT) approach and calibrated using measured pesticide residues by passive sampling method. Finally, the calibrated model was used to estimate the fate and distribution of the pesticide residues in different media of the lake. The result of sensitivity analysis showed that the five most sensitive parameters were KOC, logKow, half-life of the pollutants in water, half-life of the pollutants in sediment, and KAW. The variations of outputs for the three studied pesticide residues against inputs were noticeably different. For example, the range of changes in the concentration of ?-HCH residue was between 96% to 102%, while for methoxychlor and endosulfan-sulfate it was between 65% to 125%. The results of calibration demonstrated that the model was calibrated reasonably with the R2 of 0.65 and RMSE of 16.4. It was found that methoxychlor had a mass fraction of almost 70% in water column and almost 30% of mass fraction in the sediment. In contrast, endosulfan-sulfate had highest most fraction in the water column (>99%) and just a negligible percentage in the sediment compartment. ?-HCH also had the same situation like endosulfan-sulfate (e.g., 99% and 1% in water and sediment, respectively). Finally, it was concluded that the application of QWASI in combination with passive sampling technique allowed an insight to the fate process of the studied OCPs and helped actual concentration predictions. Therefore, the results of this study can also be used to perform risk assessment and investigate the environmental exposure of pesticide residues.
